Setting Stereo Mix to default recording device on Windows 8 HP Envy Ultrabook Kills Speakers

When I try setting Stero Mix to be my default recording device, the audio playback always cuts off after about 5-10 seconds or so. When it cuts off it doesn't sound good - it sounds like my speakers fry themselves to a quick and painful death if you can imagine that sound (ok, maybe i'm exagerrating).
Sometimes I have to reboot in order to hear any audio again on this ultrabook. Other times the audio will come back on its own after some time (it may always comes back over time, but most times i'm impatient so I reboot).
Is anyone else with my config able to set Stereo Mix to be the default recordgin and still retain a workable playback device? Anything else I can try?
I have the HP Envy Ultrabook laptop with Windows 8 Pro 64 bit.
Thanks,

I have since discovered stereo mix works when the laptop is plugged in. If it's unplugged it still will not work even though the setting "continue using while on battery power" is checked in the properties. If this is by-design I suppose I can live with this.

  • Where is the registry key for the default audio device in Windows 7?

Win 7 only allows playback out of one device (ie front or back audio jack) at a time.  If you have something plugged in to both at the same time, it will only play out of the one that is set to be the default audio device.  This can be changed
in the 'Manage Audio Devices' window by selecting the the desired device from the Playback tab and clicking Set Default.  What I would like to do, as it is very annoying to have to go here every time I want to switch between my headphones and speakers,
is write a script that will change which device is the default playback device, so if I push one of my extra keys on my keyboard it will change it to speakers, and if I push a different button, it will change it to headphones (or one button that will switch
to whichever one is not the default).  I have a script currently that opens the window and simulates clicking the set default button, but it is not ideal as it has to actually open the window.  I figure if I can just change whichever registry key
is storing the default playback device, it will work a lot better.

Once again, a clear cut case for it being ABSOLUTELY WRONG for anyone but the original poster to mark a question as answered.
I've tried 3 different machines of difference pedigrees (all x64 though) and none of them have that key.

    Hello,

    My problem is that:
I have a toshiba Satellite P300-16N and I will recording the sound of a music in internet starting from my PC...
But, I don't have the "stereo mix"...
I have a "conexant high definition audio smart221" and in the menu to notch: "to post the decontaminated peripherals" but nothing... :(
    Help me please :(

Hmm maybe you should update the sound driver too
As I said in my first posting, I could enable the stereo mix on my Satellite. But there is one difference to the P300-16N; my notebook supports Realtek sound chip, your notebook supports Conexant CX20561 sound chip
Maybe this is the reasons why the stereo mix is not available.

  • No Stereo Mix in Audition 3.0 or Windows 7 - How to Fix?

I'm trying to record the stereo mix from my computer in Audition 3.0, unfortunately there is no "Stereo Mix" option in either Audition's Audio Settings or in the Windows Sound Controls.  I've tried to "Show Disabled Devices" in Windows and yet there is no "Stereo Mix" option available.  In turn, the drop-down menu in Audition's Audio Settings doesn't offer a "Stereo" option for recording, just the computer mic.  How is it possible to fix this?  Is it as simple as a plug-in for Windows, or am I missing something?
Screencap attached, any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

--->Install the driver manufacturer's audio chipset. No the windows 7 driver.

  • Cannot set my headphones as default playback device.

I own the Pavillion g6 and ever since I've gotten it, I've had audio driver problems. This is a recent one. I'm not able to set my Communication Headphones as the default device. When I try to do so, It does nothing. Nothing at all. The reason I want to is because I want audio to go through my headphones only, but if I disable speakers and headphones, volume mixer glitches out and says "No audio device is installed" I've also had other problen too, my microphone does not work correctly but the headphones do. This is annoying me so much, please help. I've already tried uninstalling / reinstalling by the way.

    heroesp,
    Welcome to the HP Forum.
I do not know the answer to your issue - I am answering because I want you to have something to work on while we await someone who knows what is going on -- hopefully one of our Sound Experts will jump in.  Smiling.
Now that you know that reinstalling the drivers is a dead end, you might try a Hard Reset.  No panic - this is NOT a reload of the Operating System -- it is just a device reset in case the driver instructions are tangled up in a heap.
Create a Restore Point:   Create a Restore Point – Win7  OR  Create a restore point Win8
Close all your programs and shut down the computer
Disconnect everything (little Unifier for the keyboard / external mouse can stay)
Perform the Hard Reset for your notebook model
Boot the computer and log in
Reminder:  Hard Reset is just a device Reset.  The procedure does not wipe out your files nor does it destroy your Windows setup in any way.  It just "clears the cobwebs".  Depending on the cause of the problem, this kind of "reset" can fix a variety of computer glitches.
    ============================================================================
    Now, Test everything:
Notebooks - No Sound from Speakers (Windows 8)
On that last page of the Sound settings > Communications tab >
Set When Windows detects communications activity
    Select Do Nothing
This usually does not have any effect on your kind of issue, but it won't hurt and if there is something odd going on, it can help.
    ===========================================================================
It might be noted that the reinstall of the Audio device may have had to do with the manner in which the driver was reinstalled.  See this Post from our own Expert Provost DavidPK:
David PK - Fix: No audio playback for hp pavilion m7 running Windows 7
Your details, that is the particular driver, would be different.  It is the method that is important.  You would check your Driver details in your Device Manager and then download the correct driver from your own computer's driver support pages.

  • 1820m - Using E-DSP Wave for Windows Default Recording Device?

Good Morning! I just ran into an interesting problem. My professional applications all use EMU-ASIO (1820m) and work perfectly fine. But I have this prgram called Jing, that can record short videos of your screen so you can share how-tos, and short training snippets. The problem is that it records audio from the Windows default device for sound recording. Mine is set up as "E-DSP Wave." But a mic plugged into the audio dock does not register any signal in the Windows recording hardware. I'm fairly sure there is a way to do this in PatchMix (Version 2.0) via inserts or something, but I've tried the manual and some trial/error, and can't figure it out.
Can someone give me a clue? This seems like it should be a no-brainer.
    Thanks.
    Ken

Just to add a bit of information to the above, as yet unsolved problem...Windows XP can use the E-DSP Wave just fine for playback! It's only recording that it can't seem to manage. I can select it, but as I said above, the volume control is totally greyed out, and the "test" hardware" function in the "voice recording" window won't register signal from the audio dock. One other thing, I CAN record into Adobe Audition when I select E-DSP Wave from within its audio device window! So sound IS getting into windows through that driver. I just can't figure out why XP won't recognize it.
Again, just hoping someone can give me a clue.
    Thanks.

  • DVD RW is not recognized as a recordable device in Windows 8

    Hi
I have Windows 8 installed and if I right click on my CD/DVD drive my Recording tab is missing in Properties. Basically I can read any CD/DVD but I cannot write a CD/DVD. I have 3 CD/DVD drives on my computer. It seems that I need to
change the drive type to 2 in:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives
However, in windows 8 this path is not working. Do you know where should I change the registry (regedit)? I do not find the path.
My computer is a virtual machine which is managed by vmware vsphere. On the virtual machine is installed the operating system Windows 8. In fact my computer is an Oracle Sun Ray Client which display a server-hosted virtual desktop. I have virtual CPUs and
virtual storage on my computer.  DVDWR device is external connecting through USB to virtual desktop (Sun Ray desktop).
    Any help would be appreciated.

You will want to ensure your USB DVDRW drive is properly connected to the Windows 8 VM in question.
To check this you will want to use the Vmware vSphere client to connect to your Vmware ESX/ESXi host.
Next, you will want to edit the settings for your Windows 8 virtual machine and check that you have added a USB controller and then connected the USB device to the controller. This is a manual assignment. If your DVDRW drive you wish to connect is actually
connected via SATA on the motherboard of the host then you will want to go through the same process to ensure the CD/DVD drive of the host has 'connected' and 'connect at power on' selected under settings.

If you are running Vista and Win 7 OS, you’re going to have trouble enabling Stereo Mix.  I don’t know what soundcard is in your system but I got it to work with Conextant.  (Let me first say I got really lucky posting here  the same topic 2 weeks ago after literally spending countless hours Googling. Thanks again Brad.)

  • Enable Stereo Mix on L755-S5245

In order to enable the Stereo Mix feature on your Satellite L755-S5245 you must follow the these steps:
First, I strongly suggest you create a Restore Point before making any changes. Go to Control Panel - System - Create restore point.
Click on Windows Start Logo and enter Regedit on the "Search programs and files" and press ENTER. Windows will prompt you to allow the program to make changes in your computer, click YES
One the left side of the screen navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE- SYSTEM - CurrentControlSet - Control - Class -{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - 0007 - Settings - EPattributes
In Epattributes, create a new key named EPsettings
Open up EPsettings and create a key named StereoMixEnable
Click the StereoMixEnable key and create a binary value named Enable. Change the value to 1
Create a binary value named MixAssocSeq. Change the value to E0 E0
Create a binary value named MuteGainSettings. Change the value to 00 00
Follow the same steps with ControlSet001 and ControlSet002 (instead of CurrentControlSet) Example:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE- SYSTEM - ControlSet001 - Control - Class -{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - 0007 - Settings - EPattributes
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE- SYSTEM - ControlSet002 - Control - Class -{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - 0007 - Settings - EPattributes
Reboot and enable stereo mix from the recording devices box

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I have never heard of the term "S0" and "S1" for drives. Perhaps you mean sda and sdb.
Go into the BIOS, choose your equivalent of "Hard disk priority", move the drive that you want to boot first above the rest of the others, and then exit by saving the settings (usually F10). That should do the trick. Alternatively, you could open up the case and move the SATA cables around, but be careful if you use "sdx" name conventions in /etc/fstab.
    Thanks for the reply
I made up S0 and S1 for simplicity. sda and sdb makes more sense I suppose.
My BIOS does not recognize sdb in the priority menu, I'll try moving the SATA cables.

  • Stereo Mix and Audition CC

So I know there are a couple threads floating around talking about Stereo Mix and recording What You Hear issues that have been going on now for quite a while. I think my issue is slightly different. My company has recently switched from CS5 (using Soundbooth) to CC (which uses Audition). When using Soundbooth I had no problem setting up, recording and playing audio captured through Stereo mix. For some reason in Audition, this seems to be impossible. No hardware changes were made.
    Windows7
    Realtek Audio Driver: 6.0.1.6602
    Any advice?

This shouldn't be anything to do with Auditiion which simply records what the sound card (and associated software) in your computer hands it.  If your sound card offers "Stereo Mix:" (or What U Hear or any of the other names used over the years) then Audition will record it.  If Stereo Mix isn't available on your Windows audio recording panel then you're out of luck.  The problem most of us have is that, under pressure from the RIAA, Microsoft and the computer manufacturers have dropped support for this from the OS.
Were there any other system changes when you upgraded to Audition CC?  An upgrade from XP or Vista to Windows 7 for example?
If not, then it should still be there.  Go to the Recording control panel in Windows and select Stereo mix as your default source.  If you don't see it offered, right click on the white area of the control panel (i.e. away from any existing source) and put a tick next to both "show diabled devices:" and "show disconnected devices".  If Stereo mix is now shown, select it as default.
After this, in Audition, go to Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware Setup.  Select MME as the device type and Stereo mix as your Default input here too.
This should do it...but it all depends on Stereo Mix appearing on that Windows list.  If it doesn't, then there's nothing you can do about it except maybe buy something like Virtual Audio Cable--but the change wasn't in Soundbooth/Audition.  Somehow your Windows installation was altered.

  • [G50-45] stereo mix and mic

I was able to get stereo mix working on my G50-45 with conexant smartaudio HD card using instructions found here .  The issue i have is that while it picks up sound files playing on my computer it wont pick up the microphone.  If I disable stereo mix and choose mic as default recording device it works fine.   Any ideas on how to get stereo mix and mic working at same time?
Moderator comment: Subject edit. Model added.

    Hi curiousgeorge,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Try setting it up as the Stereo mix is the default Recording Device but do not disable the the MIC.
Rightclick on the Mic and select properties, go to Listen TAB, place  a check under Listen to this device and select the speaker or Headphone as default playback.
Try this and see if that works.

  • Satellite L750-170 Windows 7 Stereo Mix Not Appearing

    Hi,
I've been looking for ages on how to enable my Stereo Mix and I just can't get it up...
I've installed the latest driver for my 'Conexant SmartAudio HD', clicked the 'Show Disabled Devices' and the 'Show Disconnected Devices' and I still end up with no Stereo Mix showing. I've got Stereo Mix on my XP, Vista and my other Windows 7 PC before and I really don't know why it won't work on this.
    Please Help!!
    Thanks

    *I found a solution!*
Stereo Mix is a sound device for recording music from you computer.
It is very useful for marketing purpose.
However, it is usually missing in most Toshiba computers.
Here is how to get it back.
This solution worked for my Satellite L750.
    - Download the latest Conexant SmartAudio driver for your laptop downloadable at http://support.toshiba.com/.
    - Create a new folder (I created one on my Desktop) for the driver and extract the zipped driver files to it with WinRAR.
    - You should find a couple folders. Browse through them until you find the folder labeled W7-64/ W7-32, depending on whether you are using 32-bit or 64-bit.
There will be a .inf file inside. There should only be one file with that extension. Open it in Notepad.
    - Now search in notepad until you find this section:
    ;HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\PcBeepCtrlEnable ,Enable,1,01
    ;HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\PcBeepCtrlEnable ,EPname,1,01
    ;HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\PcBeepCtrlEnable ,DefGainSettings,1,00,07,00,07
    ;HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\PcBeepCtrlEnable ,MuteGainSettings,1,00,00
    ;HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\PcBeepCtrlEnable ,Flags,1,00
    ;HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\StereoMixEnable, Enable,1,01
    ;HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\StereoMixEnable, MixAssocSeq,1,E0,E0
    ;HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\StereoMixEnable, MuteGainSettings,1,00,00
Note the semi-colons in front of each line. Remove all the semi-colons so the 8 lines above read like this:
    HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\PcBeepCtrlEnable, Enable,1,01
    HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\PcBeepCtrlEnable, EPname,1,01
    HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\PcBeepCtrlEnable, DefGainSettings,1,00,07,00,07
    HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\PcBeepCtrlEnable, MuteGainSettings,1,00,00
    HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\PcBeepCtrlEnable, Flags,1,00
    HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\StereoMixEnable,E nable,1,01
    HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\StereoMixEnable,M ixAssocSeq,1,E0,E0
    HKR,%EPattributePath%\EpSettings\StereoMixEnable,M uteGainSettings,1,00,00
    Now cick "File" and "Save".
    - Then go to Control Panel, Sounds and Hardware, Device Manager, Sound, Video, and Game Controllers, and right click on Conexant Smart Audio HD, select Update Driver Software.
    - Then go to Browse My Computer for Software, Let Me Pick From A List, Have Disk, and navigate to the .inf file (the one you edited in Notepad) in the folder on your desktop.
    - It should tell you it is no longer digitally signed and might harm your computer. Install it anyways.
    - Now open up your Sound tray. If you go to the "Recording" tab, and make sure "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" are both checkmarked.
    - Now you should have Stereo Mix. Right click on it and select "Enable".
