Setting the DPI of a picture

I am trying to create an image and then save that to a file to be printed later.  I notice that the picture functions seem to default to a 96 DPI image.  Is there some way to increase that?  I need to add some pretty small text to the picture and it is turning out eligible.

Hi there! So I am using Lightroom 3 on a pc and I have ran into an issue when exporting images. The DPI and image size (in inches) that I am selecting during the export process. For example I just exported a collection and set the dpi to 180 and the size to 7 inches on the long edge. My exported result is 457 dpi and sized at 3200x2134 pixels.. Any ideas on why this is happening and what I can do to correct it?

The DPI setting in a digital image has no meaning at all. You need to learn how to calculate what you need in your exported image. The only measurement in a digital image that has any meaning is the number of pixels in each direction. It doesn't matter what you set that DPI to (actually it's PPI or pixels per inch). The image will have the same number of pixels regardless of the setting. If you need an image that is 5 x 7" (for example) at 200 PPI then you would want an image that measured:
    5 x 200 = 1000 pixels
    7 x 200 = 1400 pixels
So you would need an image that is 1000 x 1400 pixels to have a 5 x 7" image at 200 PPI. The reason your exported image had such a high PPI setting is because you specified the number of inches you wanted the image to be. And there were enough pixels in the image that it calculated out to be that high PPI setting.
I apologize, I don't explain this very well. But you need to learn to do the math to determine how large you really want your exported images to be.

  • How does one set the DPI when resizing images in Bridge?

I am sure I am missing something here (so excuse me if its a simple answer) but I am used to using Photo Mechanic and there you are able to set lots of variables while resizing.  I don't understand this Bridge resizing window when using Batch Processing thru Photoshop.
-There are two boxes for sizing.  If you put the same dimension in both does it just set the longest dimension to that size?
-What if I want say a 10x10 inch image at 72 DPI for web use as opposed to a 10 x10 inch image at 300 DPI for printing purposes, where does one enter that info?
    Thanks,
    Joshua

You don't "resize" anything in Bridge, nor does it set PPI, pixels per inch—and most certainly NOT "DPI" (Dots [of ink] Per Inch) which is exclusively a feature of the printer.
Bridge is just a File Browser.  It used to be called simply the Photoshop File Browser".  It doesn't open, edit, manipulate resize or even save anything.
It merely hands the file(s) over to the appropriate application, whether that be Photoshop, adobe Camera Raw, Illustrator, InDesign or even MS Word.

Again, you mean PPI in both instances there.
You enter that in whatever application you're sending the image from Bridge.

    Jayanth,
Take a look at the attached example.  Alternatively, you can search for it in NI Example Finder by going to Help>>Find Examples in LabVIEW, click on the search tab, and search for meshes.  I had difficulty reading your code, but I believe you need to position your lighting source in the optimal location to get better definition.  And the example shows how to bind a color to the object.

  • How can I set the caption text of picture controls inside an array or how can I choose which array element is assigned using the array elements caption text property.

I have 8 picture controls inside an array and I would like to set the caption text of these controls.
I have used the property node of the array and used the array elements property caption text to set the text.
The problem is however that I set the same text to all the picture controls inside the array.
My question is how to set caption text of specific elements (Picture control) that I have so far only been able to access using the array elements caption text property.

    Some more help
1 You could use the caption of the array and place it in front of the selected picture and update that using property nodes.
2 Like Norbett said if you use a cluster of pictures then their caption can be updated individually.
Here is a an example that demonstrates the above

  • How can i set the location of my pictures in photos app for mac osx?

Not every photo I import into my MacBook have all the metadata in them. iPhoto allowed for setting the location, but in Photos I cannot manage to do so. Is there another way to do it or perhaps it's coming with an update?
    Thanks
    MacBook Mid-2010
    OSX Yosemite 10.10.3
    Photos 1.0

Adding location data is not yet supported in Photos.
And we do not know, if future updates will  support this feature. It might help, if you send back feedback to Apple with a feature request. You can use this form:  Apple - Photos - Feedback
As a work-around, use third party apps to add location data before you import the photos to Photos.
You could, for example, first import to iPhoto, add the locations, batch change the titles and captions, do all the things that are not yet supported in the new Photos, then export the photos from iPhoto and import them to Photos.
Or use the free exiftool, if you like the Terminal.
    See:  http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/exiftool_pod.html#geotagging_exampl es
    To install exiftool: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/%7Ephil/exiftool/install.html
Other convenient apps are Jetphoto Studio, Geotagalog, there are many more ..
I use Jetphoto Studio, but it is not free.

  • In iPhoto, where do you find the dpi of your pictures?

I am trying to send some photos to a company that requires a specific dpi to make prints.
how do i find the dpi of my photos so i can size them appropriately?

    i do not understand.
I selected an image in iPhoto.
I looked to the top right menu bar and did not see an italic i in a square.
From left to right, there ia an Adobe symbol, clock, 3 dots between brackets symbol, the volume symbol, then a symbol that looks like a B covered by 3 dots (it says bluetooth when i click in it), then the wifi symbol, day, time, my name, search symbol.
I didnt understand any of the math you mention.
Could you be a little more specific?
I am trying to send images to a print company to have reproductions made but when i sent the first image, they wrote me back and said there are certain sizes they can reproduce based on the dpi of my image and what i had sent so far was not adequate. so i want to see the dpi's of my images so i know what to do about it.
    Thanks!

  • How do I increase the DPI of my pictures?

I take photos of houses (exterior and interior) - the printer is asking for 1400 DPI pictures and I dont know how or where to do that...

Find a printer who knows what they are doing
    You can not "increase" DPI.
DPI is dots per inch and is the result of a very simple mathematical calculation. Dots (pixels) divided by inches being printed. It is not a setting. What size is the printed photo? If they are 4x6 then you need a 6400x8400 photo (4*1400x6*1400)
Typically 300 dpi if fine for a print. Unless you are making very small prints or have a great professional camera 1400 is unrealistic. And probably totally unccessary

  • I've created a logo in Photoshop, when I bring in into In-Design it's not in focus. I've set the dpi to 300, I've tried saving as a photoshopPDF, .png, .jpg 7 eps file.

    Help

Most likely, it is not a problem at all. By default, InDesign shows images in low resolution on screen only. That is to prevent large images slowing everything down. It is mentioned in the Online Help: InDesign Help | Placing graphics
Set your preview display to "high resolution": InDesign Help | Placing graphics, or export to PDF and see if the image is better there.

  • Where do I change the dpi settings for creating a jpg in Bridge CS5?

I upload jpgs to an online site to be viewed in a browser. I've been using Bridge CS5 to batch process the jpgs from high quality pdfs. The settings I see when I do the settings to create the jpgs will only give me Maximum settings and the option to set it on 12 but when I open the jpg that's created in Photoshop, it's still 72. I would like to have at least a 150 dpi setting. I've searched and can't find any help online. What am I doing wrong, or isn't there any place to give me the option to change the settings to a higher dpi in Bridge? If this isn't possible, what do you suggest to make the process go faster? I'm using the Adobe CS5 programs.
Thanks in advance for any help.

"Maximum" and "12" usually refer to compression (influencing image quality and jpeg file size in bytes); and as Curt wrote, dpi is meaningless for display by and viewing in web browsers.  (It could be a different matter if you are uploading the jpeg files for someone to download from the web to print.)
What are the sequence of steps that you and your batch processing take from Bridge?
You can use call Photoshop's Image Processor from Bridge to create the jpeg files  (Tools > Photoshop > Image Processor).  In the Image Processor you can set jpeg compression, pixel dimensions if desired, also convert to sRGB (good idea for web display).  In my experience the image processor leaves unchanged whatever dpi is set in the source file; or, if none there as might be for a pdf, it will set the dpi value in your New Document Preset Print Resolution (from your Photoshop Units & Rulers preferences).

  • Qosmio X500-15F - How can I modify the DPI?

    Hello
With Qosmio X500-15F and graphic card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M
I'm using a professional software for jewelry building (Matrix 6.0 based on Rhinoceros 3D 4.0 SR9). When starting it, the software is asking me to set the DPI to normal.
How can I modify the DPI? I already tried different resolution settings. It doesn't change the problem.
    Thanks for help

DPI is how many pixels per inch of the LCD. You can't change that.
I think the software needs a specific resolution or LCD size. Try lowering the resolution to 1280x800 or try an external monitor.

  • How do I change the dpi in illustrator?

I created an image in illustrator and saved it as a jpeg. When I took it to print in the shop they told me the image had the wrong dpi (72). How can I change this so that I can print the image?
Thanks for your help in advance.

When you save the file as .jpg there is a dialog that opens that allows you
to set the resolution. 72 is the (old) standard for internet images because
older monitors worked at 72hz and pixels were scanned 1/1 at that rate.
With today's falt screen monitors, scan rate is a thing of the past so only
pixel count size is relevant fro web display. For print, simply set the dpi
to high (300) or more (custom).
Also, you'll need to discus with the print shop what formats thay like to
use best. .jpg is not often used for print, CMYK .tiff is used more often
    along with .pdf production ready.

  • [SOLVED] Openbox - setting different dpi on external monitor

    [SOLVED SUMMARY]
After the suggestion from Max, I've got two instances of openbox running on the different screens.
the xorg.conf I used for this is below.
then I used the following addition to ~/.xinitrc to start two instances and set the dpi of the laptop screen:
    DISPLAY=:0.1
    exec openbox &
    DISPLAY=:0.0
    exec xrandr --output eDP1 --dpi 192 &
    exec openbox-session
    [/SOLVED SUMMARY]
    [ORIGINAL POST BELOW]
    Hello,
I want to be able to set a different dpi for my laptop screen  (macbook pro retina 13 inch late 2013  11,1   integrated graphics (not nvidia))
and my external monitor, as the laptop screen has a pixel density more than double that of the external monitor
    if I start openbox using:
    startx
then text on the laptop is too small,  but everything on the monitor is ok. Conversely if I start openbox with
    startx -- -dpi 144
then for the most part, things scale up nicely on the laptop, but everything on the monitor is too big.
So what I have tried to do is set the the dpi with xrandr:
xrandr --output eDP1 --auto --dpi 144 --output HDMI2 --auto --rotate right --dpi 96 --right-of eDP1
xrandr outputs a configuration that looks ok, but the display doesn't change:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3760 x 1920, maximum 32767 x 32767

There seem to be a thousand ways to set up multiple screens, so it would be great to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about the best ways for me to approach this,
should I  set up seperate monitors in Xorg.conf,
or even seperate X DISPLAYs and launch multiple instances of openbox?
    thanks
    Mathew
    [EDIT]
on re-examining, while the dimensions listed by xrandr seem about right, the xrandr command isn't changing them, they seem to be  defaults

Photos now take up 700Gb whereas it was 350Gb  #@!$#@!@#!@#
    Thanks

That are all good points - but Photos is a completely new application. and it is only version 1.
Continue to use iPhoto, girraween; the next update to Photos will probably add a few more features.
iPhoto 9.6.1 is working very well with MacOS X 10.10.3.
The migration let iPhoto installed and also your iPhoto Library will still work with iPhoto.
If you did not uninstall iPhoto, it will still be there in your Applications folder.  And if you had updated to the latest version iPhoto 9.6.1 before you upgraded to MacOS X 10.10.3,  you can simply drag iPhoto back to the Dock from your Applications folder and continue to use it. Double click iPhoto and confirm, that you want to open iPhoto and not Photos.   It is not compulsory to use Photos, while it it still the first release. When you launch iPhoto, you will see a warning, that the iPhoto Library has been migrated to Photos, but simply click the "Open iPhoto" button. The library will still work with iPhoto. ()see: If Photos won't open a library that you already migrated - Apple Support
If your iPhoto version is not iPhoto 9.6.1, you need to update it.
    See this User Tip:
Usually it will work to reinstall instead of updating:
Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities
The main idea is to move the iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the AppStore, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.
Meanwhile you may want to send a feature request to Apple using the feedback form. Apple - Photos - Feedback
I hope, Apple will listen and add more features to Photos to make it usable for large Photo Libraries.
