Setting time between Arch+Windows 7

I have Windows 7 x64 and Arch x64 both off /dev/sda, I just finished a dual boot install this week and both working fine, but I can't get the time to be smooth on both. I followed this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Time
I have UTC in Arch (/etc/adjtime) and in Windows I added that registry entry from the Arch Wiki, however now the time in Windows is showing as 3 hours behind. I change it manually and of course it reverts shortly back to 3 hours behind. Wondering if anyone else has run into this, appreciate any help!

If you use the registry entry exemplified in the wiki to set Windows to UTC/GMT, you also have to disable the windows time service.  This can be done from "services" or by simply going to whatever gui time setting thing windows has and disable auto update (or whatever they call it).  Otherwise, it will tell Windows you are in UTC, but the updater will continue to update in localtime. At least this was my experience.  So it was therefore easier to simply let Arch or any other non-windows (therefore UTC) system to keep the time.
The reason it suggests using your Linux install to handle time is because of daylight savings time.  There is the reversal of an hour in the fall and very time sensitive programs might not react very predictably when time goes backwards.  Though if your area does not have DST, this does not apply to you.
I always ran into the situation for that every additional operating system installed on the machinery, that was one more time that the clock would adjust for DST.  I now solve that problem by just having Arch installed.  If there are other *NIXs on the same machine they usually respect UTC.

when I set black point using windows, the image switches between blank and full image, why?

I set black point with alt button down while I move sllider. When black
dots show, I stop and back off a bit.  That's the normal result. Normally a
white screen appears until I release the alt key. In my case, sometimes the
screen goes from white to full image. It's not all the time. I view my
power and ram use as I work and it doesn't spike when this happens.  It's
as if the alt key command is not holding.  I've used both alt keys with
    same results.

  • How to set time in Dual-boot config with Windows 8.1

    Hi,
I have been trying to workaround this problem i am having with Arch linux and Windows 8.1 time settings.
According to Installation guide on Wiki I set hardware clock to UTC and added my local time zone too.
But my Windows 8.1 uses hardware clock a local time and it is really confusing me.
I did tried to setup Windows 8.1 to use UTC (http://superuser.com/questions/494432/f … bios-clock)
but that settings is not working on my side (most Windows 8.1 users are also getting the same problem)
    Please help.

I have two laptops which are dual booted arch and Windows 8.1.  For both of those machines I set the Windows clock to be UTC instead of local using the method in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ti … in_Windows (i.e. creating the .reg file and executing it - take care that the .reg file is created correctly with the .reg extension or it won't execute).  I still allow Windows 8.1 to update its time from the network and it does not cause a problem, though the advice is to let Arch do the time synchronisation. (That may be because it is not yet summertime so I will also disable time sync in Windows before the change to summertime at the end of this month). I also followed the normal install advice for Arch and have the hardware clock in UTC, and have chrony set up to keep time in sync.  Additionally I use KDE and have my normal timezone with DST adjustments for summertime.  I have not had any problem with that way of working on either of my two machines.
I presume that if the Windows clock registry hack is done after the dual boot install it should not matter but I made that change before installing Arch.

I need to add a secondary hard drive to my time capsule. Can something that has been set up for a windows machine work without re-formatting?

In addition to Niel's comments, if you plan to use Time Machine to backup a Mac to the secondary drive.....that application needs a drive that has been specifically formattted for Mac.  That would be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
PCs can also read and write to the Mac formatted drive.

  • How do i set up my time capsule with windows

How do I set up my airport time capsule using Windows 7 home premium?

If you have the newest AC model TC.. you might be in trouble. Apple specifically state you need v6 airport utility. They do not provide v6 with windows.. only Mac and iOS. If you happen to have iphone, ipad even itouch, you can download and install the airport utility and use that.. you just cannot do the setup from windows.

seems the problem was not with Firefox itself. Rather it seemed to have been an ad-blocker program called "WebMonitor" . i began by deleting Firefox and then opened Explorer (which i seldom do) and the same thing began to happen with MSN. So i
began deleting anti-virus programs till i came to the above mentioned freeware ad blocker "WebMonitor". it is a shame because i uised to have a program that blocked all ads on a web site which was such a relief to me.

  • Time between digital inputs?

Hi, I would like to measure the time between a digital input being true.
Basically I have a prox picking put a point on a rotating shaft (to determine RPMs).
What I want to do is measure the time between consecutive input signals from the prox, divide 1 rev by the time, multiply this by 60 to get RPMs. Then compare that value to a set value ( say 300 RPM ). If it is equal or great, contine onto the rest of the program, if it is less than the set value, keep looping until it is greater than or equal to the set value.
Thanks in advance for the help!

If you need to measure accurately the rotation speed on a single turn, software timing may not be accurate enough, since the Window internal clock readings have lags (read "errors") of more than 10 ms (= 100 rps, about 2 rpm error), even when no other application is running. So either you count (and wait) for a given number of rotations, and calculate an average, or you use hardware timing with a counter on the DAQ card (if any)...
Otherwise, if you only need an estimate of the rotation speed, you can read the digital line and wait for 2 consecutive changes. The period can be calculated from the time stamps. See the attached vi. Wait a few seconds to observe the variations generated by Windows.

  • Set Time & Date Automatically

Hi folks, I ventured into the Time/date settings and have my time zone set to Eastern USA, and checked the set time/date automatically setting. Then I locked that window via the paclock in the lower left.
How often does Snow Leopard ping those servers? What would happen if for whatever reason the time server was not reachable?
What if the LAN I'm on has its own time service?

I found this thread while investigating a solution for the same problem on my one-month-old unibody MBP running 10.5.6. The clock on my MBP and my old G4 iMac have never been in sync because the iMac (forever stuck on Tiger) can set the time automatically using a time server and the MBP cannot.
I keep all of the System Preferences which have lock/unlock capability locked. Once I unlocked the Date & Time preferences and enabled the "automatic" option, re-locking or leaving Date & Time unlocked had no effect. If I quit System Preferences, the "Set date & time automatically" option in the Date & Time pane would be unchecked the next time I opened System Preferences and went into the Date & Time pane.
I tried the new user creation--no admin privileges--and that did not have any effect, so I deleted the non-admin user. On a whim, I created another admin user (my account is an admin). Before logging in as the new admin user, I made sure the "automatic" option was enabled and the Date & Time pane was locked. I think I quit System Preferences at this point, but I am not absolutely certain. I used fast user switching to login as the new admin user, went into the Date & Time preferences pane, and the "automatic" option was checked. I switched between the accounts a couple of times, going in and out of System Preferences in each account and the "automatic" option stayed enabled. I logged out of both accounts and the "automatic" option survived when I logged back into my usual account. The next thing I did was delete the new admin user and restart the computer. When I logged in normally, the "automatic" option was still set.
I have no idea why creating a new admin account would solve the problem and I would be really interested to know if it works for anyone else....

  • Outlook - Difference time between inbox and sent

we used Outlook 2010, and our e-mail server is hosted outside the company. Nowadays, in some computers, there is a difference between time in inbox and time in sent . for example, we sent e-mail at 10:40, the delivery report shows 10:40 but it
bearing in sent at 11:40. on the other hand, when we open mailbox from internet explorer through OWA, the inbox and sent time are correct which is 10:40. We release Microsoft fix it 51015 but still no change happened. could you please help us. we used Windows
    7or xp

    Hi,
According to my knowledge, the issue may be cause by the incorrect time or time zone settings on one of the computers. To confirm it, we can firstly verify all computers involved are set to the correct time, time zone and daylight savings time settings in
Windows Control Panel’s Date and Time applet.
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.

  • [SOLVED] Dual-boot Arch/Windows - 2 hard drives

    Hi Everyone
I've just installed Arch and I'm having a bit of a problem dual-booting between Arch and Windows XP, which are each on a seperate Hard drive.
I've done this successfully before with Mepis Linux and Windows XP, but for some reason it's not working this time.
The difference is that I've recently purchased a new computer and both Windows and Arch are on SATA drives whereas last time they were both on IDE drives.  Also I'm not sure whether or not to enable SATA AHCI mode in the BIOS (apparently it doesn't work with XP anyways), or SATA port 0-3 Native mode.  Although I've tried all possible combinations and it doesn't seem to work at all.
    Here is my menu.lst file:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux
    root   (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/0df05d3b-537c-4576-ad36-1f90a6b01ec0 ro vga=773
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
    # (1) Windows
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd1,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
When I boot into Arch from Grub it works fine,  but when I try to boot into Windows from Grub, I get this:
    rootnoverify (hd1,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
and then nothing....No error message or anything. It just hangs.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what's happening? Thanks in advance.
edit:  It seems I solved the problem by adding these lines to the menu.lst file:
    map (hd0) (hd1)
    map (hd1) (hd0)
    root (hd1,0)
I can now boot into either Arch or Windows from the Grub menu

  • How can I increase the transition time between songs on my IPOD?  I do not want a fade.

How can I increase transition time between songs on my IPOD?  I do not want a fade.

If Crossfade is OFF, the fadeout is actually part of the recording, so you won't be able to change how it fades.
If you want to make the silence (gap) between songs longer, there is only one setting I know of that relates to the gap between songs, and it is in iTunes.
Do a Get Info on a song in iTunes (File -> Get Info OR Cmd-I from keyboard) and go to the Options tab in the Info window.  There is a setting called Part of gapless album.  If that checkbox is checked, the songs are played with no gap.
I don't know of any other setting in iTunes or the iPod that makes the gap between songs longer.

  • Count time between 2 readings from serial port... help!.

    Hi guys,
I am using my application to get the readings sent by microcontroller from serial port. It works perfectly. But i have the problem, the pic uses 16bits counter, and sometimes i measure frequency lower than 15hz (65535-->16bits). Thats why I thought to measure the time between each pulse that it recieved in serial port. So i could multiply the reading about the time which spend in arrive to serial port. I know if any pulse spend more than 15hz, i should add 65535 to this reading.
Then, the idea is count the time spent between each reading in serial port. SInce pics count and later send each turn.
I dont know if it is possible, and exist any easy way.. Can ayone help me?.
I would like to see any example of it, always it is possible.
    Regards, Fonsi.

You're not going to be able to get even close to 1 usec resolution using the built-in time functions though I don't see any of those in your attachment. The windows clock is simply not that accurate. If you need to precisely time your serial reads you might want to look at using the timed loop. You can set the period of that to 1 msec.

  • Questions about the differences between Arch and Chakra.

I'm trying to decide whether to install Arch or Chakra on my laptop. Currently, I'm running Arch on my desktop and Windows 7 on my laptop (which I plan to overwrite). My skill level with GNU/Linux is somewhat intermediate – noobs refer to me as an expert, experts refer to me as a noob. If it matters, I'm a KDE user and primarily use my computers for web browsing and python development. Anyway, I just wanted to get an objective opinion on the differences between Arch and Chakra. I have a few points that stand out to me, but I welcome any input.
    -Stability
I started my journey into GNU/Linux with Debian back in 2009 due to it's stability. I really disliked Debian's ancient software and considered moving my system to Unstable. While doing some googling about Debian Unstable, I stumbled across Arch – it was love at first sight. I've been an Arch user ever since. I love the bleeding edge software, and haven't had any major problems since I originally installed it. However, every time I run a system update I cringe a little. While Arch hasn't broken on me yet, I've read plenty of horror stories and it makes me uneasy. I understand that Chakra is a mix between a point and rolling release model. Is it any more or less stable than Arch? I know there are other distrobutions out there, but I'm in love with the Arch philosophy.
    -Security
Pretty self-explanatory, but is there any difference in security between the two?
    -AUR
As much as I love Arch, I wouldn't be able to stand it if it weren't for the massive collection of software available in the AUR. While I'm perfectly capable of compiling software myself, I prefer to use a command like tool like yaourt to manage my software. I understand that Chakra doesn't officially support the AUR and that they have their own user repository. Seeing as Chakra is still relatively new, is it lacking? Will I miss the AUR as a Chakra user?
    -Repositories
Is there much difference in the official repositories between the two distrobutions?

    avonin wrote:

    -Stability...

My take on Chakra is that it's the same as Arch with different developers.  They use pacman. They have a different and rather nice build system for their developers. They're doing a good job, but I'd hate to give up the services of Allan McRae who must work full time keeping the Archlinux core and toolchain up to date.  Chakra devs probably piggy-back off his work.
As for "semi" rolling: I don't see Chakra as having a stable core.  A stable core sounds attractive, it would be like NetBSD which has a very stable core Unix operating system with apps added via pkgsrc.  But Chakra's core and toolchain is at the same version levels as Archlinux most of the time and are no more tested and stabilized than ours. Their core packages are updated piecemeal just like ours; there is no stable core that is released as a unit (afaik). Today Chakra has gcc 4.7 / glibc 2.15 just like ours. Their kernel is a little more stable: they're using udev 181 / linux 3.2.8 while Arch is on udev 182 / linux 3.3.7.  They are more conservative in upgrading xorg and the video drivers than Arch.  For example, today they're on xorg-server 1.10.4 / intel video 2.17 while Arch is up-to-the-bleeding-edge-minute with xorg-server 1.12.1.902 and intel video 2.19.  Yeah, I would consider Chakra to be a little more "stable" than Arch mainly because of their relaxed pace in changing the kernel and the xorg stuff.
Most of the patches that I look at for Arch packages (I build my system entirely from source and try to build monthly releases for myself) are needed because we use more recent core packages like glib2/glibc/gcc than the developers of higher level stuff like qt.  Chakra is in the same situation.  We're on the front of the wave
The Chakra CCR is compatible with the Arch AUR and mainly draws from AUR (an AUR buildscript will usually work fine on a Chakra system -- they just add one or two additional info fields.)  With a little effort you could get any package installed on a Chakra system that is available on Arch.
