SETTING to hear AUDIO while CAPTURING?

Hi...
(another) silly settings question.
How can I hear audio while capturing from my HDV deck?
When capturing from a DV device (a camera), the 'preview' box enabled me to monitor the audio from the tape while either screening it or when capturing it.
I don't see that 'preview' box as an option in the HDV log and caputure window.
Although I'm capturing audio from the HDV source, I can't hear it while it's loading. It's a little annoying as I'd like to be able to hear the tape as a way to decide if it's even worth capturing.
Any ideas?

Granted I don't work much with HDV-- but monitoring what is going into and out of the computer, rather than relying on the computer's built in audio seems to be the way to go. Then you know what's coming off the tape, and what's going back down to the tape.

When I capture video & audio, i cant hear the audio from my source. However, the audio is captured and embedded in the clip when i look at it after the capture.
Do i have to turn on some monitoring function of some sort maybe?
Im capturing with an Black Magic card via SDI Embedded Audio.
Maybe someone have a clue.

Hearing audio while ingesting into FCP

Hello,
Question - did some reorganizing and now I can't hear audio while I'm ingesting but audio is being ingested. Also the VU meter quits moving during the ingest. Is there is a setting that I'm missing? I can hear the audio fine when it plays in the browser or on the timeline. Thanks for your help.

Search is your friend:
In the Log and Capture window the Clip Settings tab
right hand side, lower "Audio" pane. There should be a checkbox called "Preview" , make sure it is checked.
But why put a drag on your system? Also read your manual for some setups.

Monitoring and previewing audio while capturing HDV

I have seen this discussion in the thread but there is no solution.
When capturing HDV via firewire, the audio is being previewed. This didn't used to happen. Is there a way to turn this off so that I can use other programs with sound like itunes? I can't find any way of doing this.
Any solution?

Buy another computer and use that for iTunes. Seriously.
If you start dedicating CPU cycles and RAM to listening to music while capturing, you are asking for trouble. Dropped frames, glitches, messed up files (pick one or more)
Yes, there is another way -uncheck the audio preview button.

Cannot hear audio while meters ARE showing signal

Hi,
Every once in a while (like NOW) i get to a point where FCE does not seem to be sending the audio signal to me MacBookPro's output. The sound settings of the Mac are set right. All other audio software gives a signal thru to the speakers.
In FCE I can see the audio meters moving up and down as the track is playing so there IS an audio file being read during playback.
I have no idea how I get into this kind of situation and, more important, i have NO idea how to get the sound to go through to the Mac's output again.
Can someone advise me please?

Go to View>Video Out and ensure that Canvas Playback is ticked.
If you have been capturing the firewire connection in/out overrides the Canvas Playback setting.

Cannot hear audio when capturing video.

I'm an owner of a skate shop. I doing filming frequently, and just recently got my first Mac computer. I got FCE4 for capturing and editing my footage for a video that I'm working on. Just started using it today, have no idea how to get the audio to play WHILE I'm capturing the tape. It will play in the timeline after it's done capturing, but I'd like to be able to hear it (without plugging in headphones or speakers to the camera) while I'm capturing it. A friend told me it could possibly be an easy fix... any suggestions? Is it something as easy as checking or unchecking a box????

No easy fix as Tom relates.
Does your camera have a small built in speaker?
That will work if the volume is turned up.

How to hear audio while scrubbing for cue points?

There don't appear to be any video control functions in AME in the Export Options dialog. How can I play and pause the video? How can I insert cue points if I can't hear any audio?

You do all this while still in PP.

Setting Contrast and Brightness while capturing.

I have see in JMStudio that setting the contrast and the brightness during video capture is possible. For those who don't know how to do:
     -> Open JMStudio...
     -> Capture a video source
     -> Click on the pause button
     -> Menu Player/? (the last available)
     -> A window appears with 2 buttons, this is the right one.
So. I wonder if someone as done the same work without using JMStudio components and with SWING components ...
I am only looking for a JPanel with all controls and action implemented.
If YOU are this guy. Can you copy/paste your java file in the forum.

Hearing Audio While Scrolling W/ Keys (or rather, Not Hearing)

OK so I am not an audio engineer or audio anything. I have a very simple project I told someone I'd help them with because ... how different could STP and FCP controls be?
All I want to do is hear the audio on the track as I push the forward and/or backward keys. In my old radio class that was called "rocking the reels" thereby hearing the audio/speech at the rate you can mentally process where a splice should go. Does STP really not offer this simple feature? I've looked everywhere and it seems like this is the case! This is madness!
Forward arrow key lets you leisurely go forward at your own pace, and back arrow key goes back? You can hear the audio this way? Seriously it's not available?
I take full responsibility for this dumb question but as I said - I don't "do audio." I am a videographer.
Also probably doesn't help that I'm on some old STP 1.1 version does it? But seriously, who doesn't offer a reel rocker? I mean heck, even FCP has that!

I don't think it's available exactly as you describe, but you can use the scrub tool, so that when you click/drag it scrubs the audio.
Arrow keys make sense in FCP, where you can only step at the frame level, but less so in STP, where you can edit at sample level, if you need to.

Imovie 08 vs Imovie 09 Audio in Capture?

Still on Imovie 09, budgets are tight in many places and upgrades are hard to come by.

One guy "Winston Churchill" said it was not logical to hear the audio on capture anymore.
Several responses said that it made no sense to have no audio on capture (preview).
To those others I would agree. To Churchill I would ask, why would it be illogical to hear audio while capturing your footage?
You need to hear any audio drops, static hits on mics, speakers are better (hopefully) than they are on a person's camera, many people listen for audio cues while capturing.
Why is it "simply not logical anymore" to hear audio on capture?
I love Apple, but that does not mean I would defend a bad choice in a program just because it's from a company I prefer. We need audio preview man.
As for listening to it on the camera when I am capturing back, I'll have to do that. But it sure would be nice to have it in the program itself.

'capture' isn't real-time anymore (as was in iMHD6 + tape).
you can preview/'pre-hear' the clip in the capture window.
but no need to hear anything on import - would be silly fast.-
when the whole clip is imported and converted into editable format, you can hear, keyword, select and edit it ... or, as in the linked thread, use the audio only.

You might try posting in the FCE forum, very few Express users here in the Final Cut Pro forum.
In FCP, the function—and limitations—is clearly explained in the manual. I hope Apple's FCE manual and online help system are as thorough.

Audio Only Capture with IoHD - Problem

I'm trying to do an audio only capture in FCP 6.0.1 using our IoHD as the input device. The XLR cables are live and plugged into CHs 1&2 on the IoHD. I've setup an audio only capture preset in FCP but I can't get any levels from the box and the level meters on the AJA do not register anything either. Using a capture preset I made using the Macs internal audio I was able to capture just fine but so far no joy using the IoHD. Anyone run across this problem?

I'm having a similar problem, and would appreciate advice. I'm feeding analog audio into FCP 5.1.4 through my Multibridge Pro. I too have set up an Audio Only capture preset, and finally figured out how to get the sound coming through. I've selected "Non-controllable Device" in the Device Control menu. But as soon as I click on Capture "Now" the Capture window appears AS THOUGH it is capturing, with the message "press Escape to stop" but the audio is no long audible. And when I press Escape, no clip has been created. I have to close out of the Capture tool and open it again in order to hear the audio coming in and see the VU meters moving again. What's going on? Turning off audio while shuttling through clips using keyboard buttons

Is there a way to turn off the audio while shuttling through clips when using either the J, K, and L buttons or the left and right arrow keys? I have audio skimming turned off but this only turns off the audio while skimming with the mouse, and not using the keyboard buttons above when you want to make a more precise edit.

Thank you for replying. You're correct that keyboard shorcut toggles the audio skimming on & off, but if it's off I'm still hearing audio while I shuttle through clips using the keyboard buttons J & L or using the Left & Right arrow keys. I would think that would turn off the audio for those functions too and not just skimming with the mouse.
Do you know of a solution?

How to record video or use screen capture WHILE capturing audio from Logic??

Hi,
I want to record my self playing guitar and singing using my mac book pro built in camera. I want the audio to come from Logic so I can add whatever effects I want to the vocals. When I say audio from Logic I don't mean recording in Logic and adding it in post. I want it to be on the fly.
What I used to do was use the screen capturing program Snapz Pro. I would screen capture a box around photobooth for the video, and then record while having Logic's audio in the background. It screen captures my entire computers audio. So for example if I get an aim message the bleep would show up in the recording. Or if I raise the volume or lower it the little click sound fx would be in it as well.
Capturing the audio this way let me get Logic's audio effects in my video on the fly. It worked out great....until now! :/
I just got the audio interface "Duet 2". And am using a microphone instead of my mbp's built in one. When ever I tried to record and capture my systems audio - my entire computer would crash. Snapz Pro won't work with the system audio with the interface. It works fine without it though.
I then tried to use Quicktime's new movie recording feature. I see it only gives an option for microphone and now system audio. So I got soundflower to re route the audio but that doesn't help either. This is because when you capture this way you can't hear anything while your capturing. So if I were to record a video and wanted Logics audio in it, I would have to set the output to Soundflower first. So when I record I cant hear myself which defeats the purpose.
So my final question is, how can I record video while having Logic's audio? I don't need to record with the mic, because in Logic the mic audio is going thru the system audio with everything else.
I would like to use a process more similiar to Quicktimes straight movie recording instead of doing an odd way like I used to screen capturing a box around the photobooth screen.
