Setting to use only middle portion of ultra wide display in order to get traditional width-to-height ratio

For the software I use most, like word processor and terminal emulator, a more
squarish display is much easier to view than the ultra-wide display I recently
purchased (somewhat by mistake). Everything has become very stretched out
lengthwise and is very difficult to read. Is there some setting in Windows8
to use only the central portion of the display in order to get the same
height-to-width ratio of older monitors? Thanks.

Meanwhile, I suggest you view the manufactre website or contact their supprt to check if there's a Display Manager to optimize your media presentation and maximize your monitor’s state such as Easy Arrange and Auto mode, usually there should be such kind
of manager for an ultra wide monitor.

Using Apple TV with an Ultra Wide Screen

Hello everyone, I have an LG EA 93, which is an Ultra Wide monitor. The resolution is 2560 x 1080. I am considering the purchse of an Apple TV, however, I am worried that it won't function as expected with my monitor. When watching movies, which are in the cinemascope aspect, they display full screen on my monitor. When connecting an Apple TV, I understand that the menu system is in 16:9, however, when I open a 21:9 movie, will it display full screen on my monitor, or will it be letter and pillar boxed? For example: when watching a 21:9 movie on Netflix, I get letter and pillarboxing, ie the movie is surrounded by 4 black bars, essentially creting a frame.
Also, the monitor has dual inputs, which can be used simultaneously. If I conect my Mac and the Apple TV at the same time, will the Apple TV be able to cope witht he reduced resolution of 1280 x 1080?

I have the above combo as well.
I configured the appleTV to always send 1920x1080 over the HDMI port to the LG ultrawide display then I switch the ratio using the ratio buton the remote between 1:1 for normal 16:9 content and select "Cinema1" if the content is ultrawide and then it fills the screen completely and looks great (you get black bars on all four sides as you described if you leave it on 1:1).
The scaling is very good and I hardly notice a drop in quality doing this. I don't think you can do 2560x1080 over HDMI versions before 2.0 or DVI, people have found ways to force it but you don't get the full 50/60Hz by doing this. If you don't trust the monitors scaling you can play the movie from a laptop with DisplayPort at 2560x1080 and use the scaling on the video application you're using - iTunes/VLC etc...
As far as I know neither the AppleTV or the UltraWide Monitor has a HDMI 2.0 port so you can't get that resolution anyway - but it really does not matter because the content is only 1920x800 so HDMI1.4 is perfectly capable of getting this content to the monitor and it's just a choice of whether you prefer the computers scaling or the monitors scaling.

How do I use only a portion of a song in my iTunes in my iPhoto slideshow?

I already tried making the song shorter in iTunes by using the start and stop options and it does indeed make the song shorter in iTunes, but when I choose the song within iPhoto, the slideshow uses the long version of the song. What do I need to do to just use like a minute of the song in the slideshow?

The settings you use to play in iTunes do not get retained in other apps. What you can do is open Garage Band, drag the song from iTunes into a GB track, then edit the song as you like. You can even adjust the fade in/out exactly to the length and duration you want. When the song is trimmed, Share to iTunes, where it will become a separate song. Select that for your slideshow, or place it in an iTunes playlist and use the playlist for your slideshow.

Use of Lenovo WD100 with Intel WIDI and Windows 7 - PIN problem

I recently bought the adapter Lenovo WD100.
It works fine when connected to my Samsung S4.
But I am unable to use it with my PC.
The PC has an Intel I7 processor, Windows 7 and the Intel WIDI 4.2 software.
When I open the window of the software WIDI 4.2, the PC find immediately the adapter WD100 but when I try to connect it asks me to enter the PIN that should appear on the TV.
Unfortunately no PIN appears on the TV.
Does anyone have any idea where to find this PIN?
Is there a way to read it in some files in your PC?

Thanks but, I had already done this. I was having THAT problem with Encore (could not even initialize before tanking) when I first installed it and that's when I updated the Roxio engine. I don't know what else there is to update or correct at this point.
There was one thing that occurred to me: When I was using XP, I had to disable Open GL in order to get Encore to stabilize. I've heard one recommendation for Encore that one must disable graphics acceleration. I would like try that here except I can't figure out how to do that in Windows 7.
I've been Googling "Windows 7 Disable Graphics Accel" and have come up with nothing useful.
Thanks for your help though and if you have any other ideas, I'm all ears.

Here are the steps for AirPlay:
Before starting Azul from your (running iOS 5.x/6.x) home screen where have have all your apps we need to turn on mirroring
On your iPhone 4S/5 or iPad 2 or 3, double-click the Home Button to view your recently-used apps.
Swipe all the way to the right to until you see the icon.
Note: If the icon does not appear, go to the "If AirPlay Mirroring is not visible or available on your mobile iOS device" section.
Tap the icon to see the list of available AirPlay devices.
Enable AirPlay Mirroring in this menu by tapping on an available Apple TV, then sliding the Mirroring slider to ON.
Now you should be seeing your iPad/iPhone on your TV.
Start up Azul now and using the settings icon on the top right corner go to the option that say "TV out" ON.
When you do that you will see an Orange screen
Now click "Done" and play the video you want to watch and it will AirPlay

I have two users, one makes some inserts in a table.
The other makes a select which visits many rows.
I have a big rollback-segment.
To ensure, both users use this rollback-segment I created a logon-trigger:

But I still get "snapshot to old" messages from the select, which contains the name off an other rollback-segment in the message.
The trigger really fires, i tested it by adding an insert-statement to a log-table.
What`s wrong ?

The set transaction use rollback segment lasts only until you commit or rollback first time and all other transactions in that session will not be forced to that rbs anymore. Other possible solution could be that other users are accessing same tables / updating them so those sessions can't keep the read consistent image available anymore for your sessions.

Using effects on only a portion of clip

Is the best way to use an effect on only a portion of a clip to use the blade tool? the reason i ask is i am trying not to split up clips because i usually add in cross dissolve transitions at the end to all clips. I then need to find the split clips and remove the transitions.
Any comments are appreciated,

I once thought that the range tool could do that. But it does not. As far as I know therer is no option other than Blade tool. Maybe you coould turn it into compond clip after using the blade. Others may have the right solution.

If you want Bridge CS6 to open when using Photoshop CS6, you must quit Bridge CC.
Then File menu > Browse in Bridge will bring up Bridge CS6.
If Bridge CC is already open, The File > Browse in Bridge for Photoshop CS6 will use Bridge CC and Bridge CS6 will not open.

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
Is there an easier way?

It also depends on the site. For example, this Apple support site is laid out to a fixed width and always displays too narrow. It built into the third-party forum softare Apple selected.
Other site may look great in full-screen mode.

Cannot set Use only this server for iCloud mail

Each new versions of OS X add more bells and whistles and brings us closer to the fun that made me move away from Windows, 9 years ago!
So this update appears to have problems saving my setting and mail is really having problems.
I have 7 accounts and each has thier own SMTP out going mail server which I set in the Edit SMTP Server List.
For some reason my iCloud account has lost this setting and now when I try to set it Mail tells me it cannot save the setting while the Incomming mail server is empty.
But iCloud sets it's own incomming server! I cannot change the setting!
I'm very disapointed with the way the quality of OS X has dropped with each new release. I'll soon be back sitting up all night trying to keep the Mac working just like I did in the bad old days with Windows, only with less money in my pocket!

If you have more than one Mail account on more then one server, you can select the server from which you want to sent the mail. If you select "Use only this server" you can't select the smtp server on sending. thats all

You actually can as most routers come with a web interface that lets you tinker with all things with regard to set up and connection.
You have to choose though as there are other routers that would require you to plug-it in to a computer first, as they have a desktop application to make way for easier set-up.
But for everything else, it is done through a web client which is just like accessing any web site.

Not photos, just data synced with iCloud shown in Settings>iCloud. If you don't have sufficient storage to back up to iCloud, back up to your computer instead using iTunes (connect you phone to your computer, open iTunes, click on the name of your phone in iTunes, go to ths Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click Back Up Now). Also transfer your purchases to your iTunes library (connect your phone to your computer, open iTunes and go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases). If you have photo stream photos older than 30 days tha you wan to save, save these to your camera roll before backing up (tap Select, tap the photos, tap the share icon -- box with upward facing arrow, then tap Save to Camera Roll).
When setting up your new phone, when given the option choose Restore from iTunes Backup and restore the backup you made earlier.

I have problem when opening a pdf page, my mouse control is hijacked to that tab when im on other tab, i cant scroll or use the middle rollling button, i have to click at the pdf tab then my control over the mouse middle button is restored.

I think I have this problem even on earlier version. The thing is I set open link in new tab and not switch over to the opened tab. My habit is to open a pdf page in the background and let it load first. What happen is that when the pdf page finished loading ( i do not set to download it), it hijacks my middle mouse button control. When i scroll down or scroll up on my original tab, it wont scroll on the tab, but insttead it scrolls on the pdf tab. I have to click on the pdf tab, then i can use the scrolling function on other tabs back. As for when i opened several pdf tabs, it seems i have to click on the tab that just finished loading, that means several times until they all finish loading. It has been getting on my nerve lately. And all pdf trouble i search from google led to unable to open pdf, firefox hang or crash when opening a pdf and the likes.

core-el, i don't see the advantage of that or i can't figure out how i'm supposed to use it. for starters, i have to click the mouse in order to get "add bookmark here" to open, which is no different than clicking on the star in the location bar, or right-clicking on the page. there are also options in the bookmarks toolbar, but they all require clicking the mouse & holding down the right button, etc.
my goal is to use keystrokes only. typing on the keyboard, using both hands, using the space bar & my left pinky finger to tab over are all painless routines for me. as soon as i have to take my fingers off the keyboard & use the mouse, the pain begins.
as i said, in older versions of firefox, all i had to do to bookmark a page was click ctrl>d, then tab over & arrow down, when appropriate, to find the folder & add the bookmark. for me, as a touch-typist whose speed is between 60 & 80 wpm, this is lightning fast.
if i have this wrong, please correct me. i just see it as more mouse clicks that don't save me time or pain.
