Setting up a 10 year old printer wirelessly or across a network.

I have a 10 year old HP g85 all-in-one printer. I am making no progress using either the USB port on my airport express, nor can I seem to connect this to a network without a HP Jetdirect 300x. Does anyone have any insight on this. I would like to relocate it to another part of my house but I am thinking I will need to get a new printer.

JOxl,
Does this printer work OK if you connect it directly to your Mac Mini? What printer driver and OS are you using - I note that the latest drivers from HP are for 10.2.4. Are you using Gutten print drivers?

I have three howm computers with three users> I need everyone to print wirelessly but can find no information as to how to set that up...

    Hi,
Based on its specs, you've got everything you need to set it ụp It has:
    Connectivity
    HP ePrint
    Yes
    Mobile printing capability
    HP ePrint, Apple AirPrint™
    Connectivity, standard
    1 USB 2.0; 1 Wireless 802.11b/g/n; 1 RJ-11 fax
    Connectivity, optional
    No
You can connect it wirelessly to your home network and install its software & drivers on each computer then all can print. It also supports ePrint and AirPrint that means you can print from mobile devices too.
The following link shows many of its manuals.

  • Printing Wirelessly on a PC Network

I am completely new to the PC Networking..
I have a Canon MF6550 and HP Laserjet 1600, both hooked up to the PC and on a network where our second PC can print wirelessly.
We now have a MacBook and would like to also print wirelessly.
I have read many many posts in the Apple Discussions and on the internet in general.. after a bunch of days of trying everything, I'm at a loss. I can't get it to work so far.
    Please help.
I tried this --> "All right only took me ten hours to find an answer to this yesterday for myself. I have the same setup different printer. First of all make sure you have the Mac on the same windows workgroup. You can find the xp's workgroup by right clicking my computer/properties/computer name tab. Once you have that and the computer's name not the computer description the computer name written down exactly then go to control panel/printers and other hardware/view installed printers. Right mouse click on the printer you are using click properties/then the share tab/select to share the printer and pick a name for it to be called over the network, I would stick to a single word and no funny symbols etc. Write this down exactly. go to your mac system preferences/network/advanced tab bottom right/WINS and then pick out a name that the other computers will see if you ever file share etc. in the top box and put in the workgroup name in the bottom box. Click OK, apply all that. Then go to system preferences/print and fax/click the plus sign to add a printer. Press the control key while clicking on more printers and choose customize toolbar. Drag the advance gear looking icon to the top bar. Now after you clicked done on the previous window click the advanced tab and under Type: select Windows. In the URL: section it should have already put smb:// You just need to fill in the blanks it should say smb://computer's name/printer's name. Mine reads smb://pornstorage/epsonr380. Select a driver to use below, unfortunately mine was pre - installed there and yours does not appear to be so maybe try one closest to your model or do as the other person said and search that website for one to use. Hopefully that should work. Good luck, and I'm not joking when I said it took me ten hours to figure this out. I'm brand new, first day with a mac so probably other ways to do this but this worked for me."
I've followed these directions before.. yet, they don't seem to work for me.
In the WINS tab, do I put in the "computer name" (which it says is "Computer Name: karens." not the Computer Name Description) for the "NetBIOS Name", or do I put in the Workgroup, which it says is "Workgroup: WORKGROUP." How would I do that?
And then when I try to add either one of the printers (neither one of the drivers show up). Its funny because when I have the printer MF6550 hooked up via USB the mac will find the driver automatically, yet when I try to add it wirelessly, it doesn't find anything and there isn't a driver that at all looks like that model listed.
So many darn bells and whistles. I want to curse the PC, but I can't, I have to work with it. Any help is appreciated.
We are using a Dell Windows XP and Mac 10.5.6. And we had someone setup the network for wireless printing for the PCs a while back, I have no idea how they did it.

The MF6550 uses Canon proprietary UFR2 page description language, which is also used on the larger office copier/mfd's which we have in our office. When the copier is connected directly to the network, you have to add the printer via More Printers > Canon IP (UFR2). Here you can enter the IP address of the printer and a queue name of LP. No option exists to manually browse for the printer model, the software queries the printer based on the IP address and selects the appropriate model. The software will then create the printer queue based on the LPD protocol.
Since you have it shared by a PC and want to use SMB, then you will not get the option to browse for the printer due to limitations of the driver software.
Therefore you need to look at using the LPD protocol, which will work with the driver software, to connect to the printer share on Windows.
The first thing you need to do is enable support for the LPD protocol for shared printers on Windows. Open Control Panel and click 'Add or Remove Programs'. Then click 'Add/Remove Windows Components' located in the left pane. The 'Windows Component Wizard' will appear. Scroll through the list and enable (tick) 'Other Network File and Print Services'. This should enable 'Print Services for UNIX'. You can click the Details button to confirm this is so. Now click the OK button at the bottom of the 'Windows Component Wizard' and wait as the new service is added. I can't remember if you will be prompted for your Windows CD, so have it handy just in case. You may also have to restart the PC in order for the service to start, so do this anyway.
Now that you have the UNIX service running on the PC, you can add the printer queue again, this time using the More Printers > Canon IP (UFR2). For the IP address field, enter the IP address of the Windows PC sharing the MF6550, and for the queue name, enter the share name for the MF6550 set in the Windows computer. With a bit of luck the MF6550 model should be found by the software and the queue should be created. If this does happen, then try a print from the Mac. If it doesn't work, then please reply.

  • How do I make my old printer wireless?

Hi -- I know there must be a solution for what I am trying to do, please help! I have an old HP 4700n Color Laserjet printer.  Here is the situation: the printer is in one room; my computer and wireless internet modem are in another room. Does a router or other networking device exist that I can connect to the printer via USB cable, that does not have to be wired to the modem in the other room? I bought a Belkin N600 Wi-Fi Dual-Band router, thinking it would allow me to do this, but unless I am misunderstanding the setup, it seems that I have to keep it connected to my modem -- which defeats the purpose. As a last resort, I will buy a long USB cable (the ethernet port on the printer doesn't work anymore, but I have tested the USB and it works) and just connect my computer directly to the printer, but I would like to avoid that, if possible. Thank you, in advance for any help that you can give me.

    Hi,
There are many router with built-in print server (thru USB port). Long USB cable won't work, it has a limit. Given you aready have a router you can buy an USB wireless print server such as one of the following device:

  • C5280 no longer prints wirelessly from Vista laptop after purchase of new Win7 PC wired to C5280

My Windows XP desktop was wired directly to the C5280 and I was able to print through my home network from the Win Vista laptop downstairs. Since I purchased a Win7 PC and replaced the Win XP one, the laptop cannot print wirelessly through the home network. What can I do to regain that functionality? Thanks.

OK, first wireless Gateway (modem/router combo) units are terrible for wireless connection. It is always, always best to use a separate modem and router in your network that YOU have control over instead of Comcast. If you have your old router it would be best to call Comcast and have that Gateway put in Bridge mode (disables the router section) and connect your own high quality router. With that said, let's try this. Set the router to a fixed wireless channel like 1, 6 or 11, never 'auto'. If you still can't connect, remove all security off the routers SSID. Now try to connect to your SSID with no security. Are you successful?

  • Can someone help me print wirelessly?

Toshiba laptop running vista 64-bit connected through DLink wireless router.
HP Officejet Pro L7780 All-in-One connected through DLink wireless router.
I can print fine using a wired connection but I want to set it up so I can print wirelessly.  When I ran the installation wizard there was a problem in that the IP Addresses of the printer and laptop were not the same.  I do not know how to fix this problem (if that even is the problem).  Can someone point me in the right direction.  I have no patience with crap like this.....**bleep** HP and Toshiba need to make this more seamless.
I don't know how to check, change, etc. the ip address on the laptop.  I do know how to check and change it on the printer.  However, when I am about to change it on the printer it tells me it will no longer be connected to the wireless network.  **bleep** am I supposed to do then?  Ridiculous.....
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

OK, let's reset the printer.  From the control panel of the printer: Setup > Network > Reset Network Defaults.
Now, from the same Network menu run the Wireless Setup Wizard.  Make sure to choose your network, not a neighbor's.
Once the printer is connected to your wireless network, make sure that you are connected to your network on your PC (again, not a neighbor's).  Run the HP software on your PC.  It should find the printer and connect.

  • Printing wirelessly from computer not working

I am trying to print wirelessly from my computer but when trying to print a word document, it does not work. In the "select printer" tab, the only options available to me are Fax (USB) and Fax (Network)...the printer is in "fax" mode and it will not allow me to print the document.
I do not have a landline and therefore do not need the fax option but it seems to have been automatically set and I do not know how to change it.
How can i set up my word/excel to print wirelessly to my HP 4620, how to take off the fax?

To remove the fax driver, just right mouse and uninstall. There should another printer that is the similarly named without the "Fax", use that printer to print.
Also, how come you have Fax (USB) and Fax (Netowrk)? Did you install the driver twice, once as usb and another network? The computer can only have that printer either as usb or network, but not both.

    Yes.

Possibly by using an Airport Express, but depends on what type of port connection the printer requires.

I have on airport express that is 5  years old, I now have a new wireless router.  I want to  use the express just for air waving iTunes.  How do I set it up?

    Hello 84wvu,
It sounds like you want to setup your Airport Express to Airplay music from iTunes.  I found an article with steps to help you get this setup:
Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network, exclusively for iTunes music
AirPort Express used exclusively for AirPlay by setting it up in Client Mode.
Choose this configuration if the computer containing your iTunes library may be out of direct range of the AirPort Express, but is within range of the Wi-Fi network.
    How to Set It Up
Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers.
From your computer, join the wireless network. Use the AirPort status menu in the menu bar on a Mac. On a Windows-based computer, hold the pointer over the wireless connection icon until you see your AirPort network name (SSID), and choose it from the list if there are multiple networks available. Enter the network password, if necessary.
Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window.
I also recommend reviewing the sections titled "Some things you should know about AirPort Express with AirPlay" and "Things to consider before you begin" in the full article:

  • Access wireless set-up program for HP 3050 printer

I'm trying to connect an HP Deskjet 3050 J610 printer to my wireless network.  It's an older model so the CD that came with it is not compatible with OS X 10.9.1, but the printer driver is already loaded in the operating system.  So I'm able to print using the USB cable but when I try to connect with my Belkin router via WPS the printer won't connect because it has a pre-assigned SSID.  I'm unable to find any configuration program on the computer that would allow me to change the SSID on the printer manually.  So far HP has been no help so I'm hoping the Apple community might have a few more answers.

Usually this is the case but this is a rather old printer.  It has no way to access a set-up program via the printer, only WPS capability.  That's why I'm wondering if there is a way to access it via the computer.  Mavericks has the driver built in but doesn't seem to have a way to access the printer set-up.
