Setting up a global shortcut to open a new terminal window

Alright, so, here's my idea. I would like a new terminal shell to open every time I press f7. I really like this idea, but i just can't get it to work. It would have to be a global shortcut, and i've tried it via the keyboard pane in preferences, but the closest thing I can get it to change the command "new shell" to f7. not quite what I want..... any ideas/help?

Also, I've tried iTerm, but it's got a ton more stuff that I don't need. And I've looked at visor but it requries simba (or something like that) and I heard a rumor that simba wasn't going to work with lepoard.

I've thought about quicksilver, but i understand that's it's used to do much more than just that. And, I don't really want to deal with all of quicksilver. Now that might change, but I think I want to stay away from it for now.
However, butler looks good. I'll play around with it.
Also, the other application "Fast Scripts" looks decent, but it's shareware and I personally would like to get an entire program free and then donate when I feel props are due. (Just my personal thing.)

  • Opening a new terminal window always launches X11

I did an update from Tiger to Leopard yesterday and while most things are fine, I have a peculiar problem, that every time I open terminal, it automatically launches X11 (the terminal window shows xset as the running application in the title bar). Annoyingly, the focus switches to X11 when it starts, too. I can quit X11, but opening a new window or tab in terminal will launch it again.
    Sequence of events:
    1. Machine had X11 installed under Tiger.
    2. Ran the Leopard update without installing the dev tools package (so as far as I understand, a new X11 wasn't installed during the process). At this point, the problem was present
    3. Installed dev tools - problem persists.
    4. Ran update to 10.5.2.
    5. Got the x11 2.1.4 package from here (http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz/wiki/X112.1.4) and ran the installer.
But I still have the problem. (In case you're wondering, there's no startup command specified in the Terminal settings, either. It should just start up running bash). Any ideas?

Yes, thanks - sorry I misremembered where the X11 install came from originally. Anyway, what's in my .profile is the command to run fink's /sw/bin/init.sh, which was adding the old X11 directory to my PATH variable. I still don't know why exactly that was making x11 launch every time I opened a terminal window, but I do have it fixed now.
As an aside, you will probably have to uninstall Fink and install the source and build another one. Last I looked there was no binary for Leopard. If you have Tiger version of Xcode Tools, you will also have to remove that, using the supplied script and install the new, Leopard-friendly 3.0.
Also, if you were using Darwin, that too is finito.

    Barney-15E,
On the comments to the second article you posted, some people confirmed they can use the Cmd-Opt-Spacebar as a global default shortcut to open a new Finder window (not Spotlight)  — http://contented.qolc.net/articles/osx-global-shortcut-key-new-finder-window/#co mment-61887, users thesmarti and Bradley. Moreover, users CT and Avinash in this forum confirmed that too.
I know that "tapping the Finder icon in the Dock opens a Finder window if one isn't already opened", but as you say, it only does it if one Finder window isn't open. If you have one open, then you have to right click on the icon, etc. And if you have an application in fullscreen, the icon is not there and it takes a while for it to appear... Not ideal.
I guess I could solve this using Automator as you suggested, but I'm frustrated because this shortcut used to work on my Mac when I bought it and it stopped working who knows why after some months.

  • Can I open new terminal window with the same path?

    Hello.
    I use Terminal for bash-shell.
When I work at a certain directory, can i open new terminal(command + N) with the same directory?
For example, when i am in /Developer and press command+N, I want a new terminal window with /Developer path.
Thanks for reading and I'm sorry for my short english.

Command-N will open a new Terminal window in your Home (~) Directory by default.
Use the "Open Terminal Here" script for more control

  • In Mac OS 10.6, why won't the command n keyboard shortcut open a new firefox window?

Ever since Firefox 3, command n does not open up a new window. I'm on a Mac, OS 10.6

    Hello cor-el,
Yes, I do use a 2 monitor set up. And Yes!!! moving the Firefox window to the main or 1st monitor allows use of command n shortcut to open a new window. You're a genius. Thank you soo much!
Naturally, the reason I use a 2 monitor set up is to have Firefox open on the 2nd monitor for quick reference and easy access. Is there a workaround that will allow me to keep this configuration? (I know, I'm getting greedy now!)
    Many Thanks,

Open the General tab of the Safari preferences and correct the home page; the default page is this one. If it has become set to a folder on an FTP server or a local drive, that request will be sent to the Finder. (28252)

When I use the shortcut to open a new window in safari (command N) on my Macbook Pro, I get a 404 error message from Google. How do I change where 'Command N' routes to?

It's not necessary to change the Command N keystroke..
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • How do I set the desired search enging when I open a new browsing window?

When I open a new browser window, I used to get the Bing search engine option but now only the Yahoo search engin is shown. How do I reset the system to show Bing when opening a new browser window? thanks.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you've got a custom timecode field somewhere in your production and/or asset metadata group(s), right? And I'm going to further guess that this timecode field has dashes in it like this --:--:--:--, right? If so, try this: Click the arrow next to the timecode field and adjust the timecode so that it has a number (it doesn't matter what the number is as long it's not dashes - "00:00:00:00" is fine). Then Save this asset, close it and then reopen it and see if the beeping madness has vanished. Then, to make this change permanent for all of your new assets, make sure to edit the default value of any custom timecode fields to put zeros (or some other numeric default value) into them when a new asset is generated. If the asset still beeps when you open it, check the other metadata groups in your set to see if there isn't another empty timecode field lurking in the shadows.

  • Safari site shortcut always open a new tab

i made a shortcut on the desktop for a website. the problem is: if i open the shortcut, safari always create a new tab. what can i do, that it always stay on the same tab? i mean that it "update" the current site?
(the shortcut is the only website i open)

I just bypass the desktop short cut and open safari. As long as I keep the tab open, it'll open that tab, and you can then tap the refresh arrow.
I think the limits of the app are:
use the desktop shortcut and open a new tab every time (meaning if you don't want an extra one, close that tab when you're done with the site)
Use safari to pick up your browsing session where it started, but know that you're going to have to refresh the page every time.

Safari is opening using the resume feature. To disable that, quit Safari using Command+Option+Q or Hold Option when choosing the menu item Safari>Quit.

  • Firefox does not open a new tab when you click the plus sign button which is actually a shortcut for opening a new tab. You have to open a new firefox window in order to get a new tab. Please help. Thanks.

I didn't have this problem before with Firefox. My kids must have pressed something or clicked on something that's the open new tab button does not function anymore. No matter how you click it, it doesn't open a new tab. Even if you click on file, then go to new tab, it still doesn't open a new tab. You have to open a new firefox window in order to do multiple browsing.
Hope you can help resolve this problem.
    Sincerely,

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened. Checking your list of add-ons, the MyPlayCity toolbar is a version of the Ask toolbar.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
    * Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
    * Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

There are some keyboard commands (shortcuts) you can use instead of having to go to the Apple menu -
Control-Eject          This brings up the Restart-Sleep-Cancel-Shutdown window.
Command-Option-Eject          This puts the machine to sleep.
Command-Control-Eject          This closes all apps and restarts the machine.

You can check the home page setting:
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).
