Setting up a mail server

Ok, i'm a novice when it comes to setting up and installing a mail server, but i really want to learn because our mail service ***** and i want to be able to control it. What i really want to do is just set up a dummy account on the leopard server and maybe my account just to test. How would i go abouts doing that? In layman's terms "dumb it down" for me and explain how to set it up

See the "Mail Service Administration" Manual available here: http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/

  • How to set up a mail server with a private DNS and relay over a public mail

How to set up the mail server that we can send and pick up emails inside and outside?
Our private network has the DNS name dnsname1.private.
We have our privat DNS Server and he can forward requests to outside over our router.
Our public emails are hosted by an internet provider. This dns name is dnsname2.com and dnsname2.org.
How we have to set up our mail server that we can pick up our emails from our public dnsname2.com?
And when we write an email how we have to set up it that the dnsname is dansname2.com and not dnsname1.private?

If you want to move your mailservice to your own (internal) server, start by making sure you can recieve traffic on port TCP 25 (SMTP). Some ISPs blocks this port, especially on "non business" connections.
Can you send mail from your LAN directly to where your mail is hosted using port 25 TCP or do you have to relay via your ISP?
You have a static public IP?

You need to get the settings for your email from your email provider and enter them in Internet Accounts (System Preferences). Many of the common systems are already available, all you need is a password and an email address to set them up.

  • Setting up a mail server on a 2010 MacMini Server

    Hi,
I am having great difficulty in setting up my Mail server on my 2010 MM server.   Setup is as follows:
    1.  Domain name hosted by dyndns.org with mail forwarding setup to forward incoming mail to my mail address <[email protected]>
    2.  Outgoing mail is being sent from the server via my local ISP using their relay server
    3.  Mail Server settings in Server app shown as "Provide mail for: mail.domainname.org"
    4.  Authentication set to: "Relay outgoing mail through ISP"
    5.  dyndns.com confirm that the domain host side is set up correctly.
    6.  Local ISP confirms that local relay service is set up correctly.
Problem is Mail account cannot be activated in Apple Mail.    email setup details in my server Mail app are as follows:
         Account Type:    POP
         Email address:   [email protected]
         Full Name:         my name
         Incoming Mail Server:   mail.domainname.org
          User Name:      admin
Password:        password on the dynsdyn.com srever
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):   Local ISP providers mail relay service
Has anyone any idea where this setup is wrong?   Also, I am unable to find a server manual for OSX 10.8.4 server.  Does anyone know where I can get this?
Any help you can give is most appreciated.
    Thank in advance
    Roger

    Hi Linc,
For the email address on the server, I create the account in my Apple mail in the normal way.  I fill in the details shown on the accounts setup panel as shown in my original post above. I then click on the "Enable this account" button but it does not connect to anywhere.
For the Server setup, this is also described in points 3. and 4. above.
The result is that the server seems to be setup properly but this may not be the case, which is why I asked my questions.
Sorry I cannot be more explicit but if you are willing to ask deeper questions that might point to the problem, I would be more that delighted to supply the answers if I can.

  • How to set up my mail server

I have a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Lion Server 10.7.2 at home.  I'm trying to move away from a Windows SBS 2003 with MS Mail Exchange 2003.  Because I learned this stuff by setting up the Windows Server, I am trying to follow a similar approach with the Mac Server. (I understand I may have to re-train may brain.)  I set up the Mac Mini with a local domain. My setup is primarily for family use, so I did not see a need for registering a public domain.  (I've had the Windows setup running since 2003 and all has been fine with that setup.)  We have several desktops, and laptops around the house, so I want for everyone to be able to log in to any desktop/laptop they find and still be able to read/send e-mails under their own mail account and keep the mail folder structure they have created.  I'm trying for Mac Mail Server to receive all e-mail for all users (mail is provided by our ISP - Verizon.net; some users have more than one e-mail address), for clients to pull mail from the Mac Mail Server (via Mac Mail, or MS Outlook), the clients would send mail ) via the configured SMTP locally, and all the mail forlders to synchronize back to the Mac Mail Server for when the user logs in from another machine.  Is that possible?  If so, how?  I recall that in Windows SBS 2003 I configured a POP Connector that receives all the mail for all the users and I designated a domain user to send the mail to.  MS Exchange would take care of sychronizing the mail folders between the client connection and the mail server.  I bought the Mac Mini, a Time Capsule and an iMac to start my transition, but I'm not sure I'll be able to duplicate what I had with MS Exchange.

Sorry, I know it is more a microsoft problem, but it happened when I tried to set up my icloud mail on my pc.

  • Setting up a mail server IMAP + SMTP with an external DNS

    Hi guys,
I'm not sure if i will be 100% clear in this message because i've got a slight pain in the head because i've been trying to get a mail server running in Tiger Server the entire evening.
So here's my problem: The server i'm administrating needs to gain a mail server. For the first time in my life i have to set one up and i'm not to happy about it. I've tried to follow everything in the manual but it isn't working at all.
This is my server situation: Domain registered by a friend points to DNS server of my ISP which creates all the Entries which all point to my server in the datacenter. On that server i need to get an IMAP + SMTP server running.
I've tried everything and I even got the IMAP part working at one time (people could send emails to a temp. account on the server) but after altering the setting so i could send email everything went wrong. No receiving or sending.
    Please help me out!
Thanks in advance and please don't tell me to read the manual because i have and it isn't working.

  • Advice for setting up a mail server.

Over the past few months I have been slowly merging away from websites that don't regard my privacy.
I've changed search engines to duck duck go,  deleted my facebook, and now I would like to get away from gmail too!
The only problem being I know nothing about hosting my own email.  I have an arch box that is on 24/7 running a diaspora pod.
What email server would work best with this (If any)?

This was by far the best tutorial I found for setting up my own personal mail server:
    http://workaround.org/ispmail/squeeze
I couldn't recommend it enough. There are a few quirks in places with the version differences but some reading around will sort you out.
It's written in a very Archlinux style and explains the concept fantastically.

  • Setting PRIMARY outgoing Mail Server

i have nine emails from my primary domain, one from a secondary domain, a gmail account and a me.com account.
i am having problems with email (cannot connect to domain name) and i am trying to verify that my outgoing server settings are correct. can someone help me here. it appears that i have to get into an /individual/ email account and at which point i have an option to select SMTP server?! this then pulls up the /first/ image which shows a primary server.
How do i change this primary account?! Do i "simply" enter all new information for each and every email account and change the primary outgoing server for each and every email address?!
How do i /set/ the primary server for an /individual/ account? Do i have to enter a new outgoing primary server for each and every email account/
Do i have to enter a USER NAME that is the same as my email account name each time i enter an outgoing server?
What is the purpose of the ON and OFF buttons for the "Other SMTP Server" accounts listed?
Do i keep the GMAIL outgoing server ON? or "on" only for the GMAIL account?
I am uber confused here and am hoping for some clarification...
    THANKS.

Well, first, you only need one copy of each server. cwmx.com is AT&T's SMTP server, and will only work when you are on cellular data; it will not work over WiFi. So start by deleting all cwmx.com servers except the first. cwmx.com should not have a user ID or password.
When you send mail the iPhone first tries to send using the primary SMTP server. If that fails or times out, it tries the secondary servers in the order listed. cwmx.com is a last resort server; most people don't need it at all; it is only needed if your ISP does not relay mail from outside of its network.
For each mail server that you interact with the Primary SMTP server should be the one for that server. The Primary server should never be cwmx.com. So for the universaljointdesign.com account the primary server should be mail.universaljointdesign.com, and you should enter your user ID and password. The secondary should be cwmx.com, and you should turn off all of the other SMTP servers for that account. Further, if mail.universaljointdesign.com does not require that you be within the site firewall when sending you don't even need cwmx.com enabled.
For the gmail account the SMTP server should be smtp.gmail.com, and that's the only one that needs to be on. You will need to enter your full gmail address as ID and your gmail password. If you have 2 factor authentication enabled for gmail you will have to generate a single use password.

  • Dns setting require for mail server 2013

    Hello Support,
I have install exchange server 2013 and working fine but right now i have some change in DNS server record and my mail services stop. what record add to start my mail services ( sent and received). till now exchange server mail box give the error mail not
connected with server. Please revered ASAP.

couple of things to notice. if you saying your exchange services stopped... this wont happen because of DNS or are you saying you exchange is not working/mail flow.
now i would suggest to quickly check the mail services. run a test for inbound and outbound at exrca.com there you will have the proper answer that what you have missed.
and at last.. for DNS.. you need MX and A record for your email server for basic functioning .. and for autodiscover couple of more. lets verify the MX and A record first and then verify the send and receive connector. to verify MX do a Nslookup as below
    >cmd
    >nsloookup   {This should resolve to your local DNS if you running this from exchange server, which is recommended and should not time out}
    >set type=mx
    > your-domain.com {This should result "A" record / FQDN of your mail server}
    > set type=A {To verify the above FQDN should point to right IP}
    > mail.your-domain.com [assuming that in MX output you got mail-your-domain.com]
    > 1.1.1.1  [IP of your email server]
if you are able to verify above then your chances are you dont have issue with DNS.
Make sure from oursite you are able to telnet t tour exchange server on port 25 and from inside you are able to resolve names from your exchange server and also have internet access.if you able to verify till this point then its the turn now to verify send
and receive connector. one easy way is exrca.com and then share the results.
to verify if your exchange is configured properly please follow this link.

  • Help Setting Up 2nd Mail Server

I am running Mac OS 10.4 server. I have several web sites running on this server but only one of the domains currently has a mail server. I use Server Admin & Workgroup Manager to administor as I am not very unix savvy.
Here is what I have done so far.
Created the domain: m2venturepartners.com in the web:sites section
Created the Web Server Alias mail.m2venturepartners.com under the Web:Site:Aliases section
Since the DNS and website is hosted elsewhere I had them create the MX record that points to mail.m2venturepartners.com and a DNS record that points mail.m2venturepartners.com to 209.233.105.38 the ip address for my server.
I created mail users with the workgroup manager enabling mail and adding the mail server: mail.m2venturepartners.com
At this point I set up a user client and successfully logged into both the imap & smtp servers. But when I send an email to a [email protected] it comes back with the following failure notice:
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at yahoo.com.

I'm lost as to what to do under the Mail section of Server Admin. Because this section was filled in when I set up my original domain (theteelfamily.com) and I can't figure out how to add additional domains.
Can someone help me get this 2nd mail server up receiving mail?
    Thanks

I am having the same sort of problems as you - and I have not been able to resolve my problems as yet. The document which was referred to earlier might be helpful, but I have not been able to get this to work, and Apple don't seem to offer any real Postfix support. I can get outgoing mail to work but incoming mail is always rejected for one reason or another (550 nu such mailbox is the usual problem).

You can install the SMTP server on your computer.
    Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove
    Windows Components >
Internet Information Services > Details . check the SMTP
    Service checkbox
Then use localhost as the mail server.

  • Setting up Leopard Mail Server to access external pop mail accounts

First I don't know if this is possible, after a few hours trying I am not really sure if I am doing this right.
I really just want to have my Leopard Mail server pull any new mail from my web hosting company mail servers that host my domain (samplename.com as an example). My domain is hosted by a web hosting company as part of my website package. I don't really want to stop having the web hosting company host my mail portion. (kinda of a backup mail server of sorts?)
My Leopard mail server is called leopardserver.local and not my domain name (samplename.com). As I am afraid if I call my Leopard server by my domain name (samplename.com) it will stop letting me access my domain name (samplename.com) from my other Macs. Also possibly adding in to pull from my secondary domain name's mail server, and a gmail.com server later.
I am trying to avoid to creating the MX records, etc. if possible. Will my idea work?

Thank you pterobyte. This process was much simpler that I thought. After searching on these forums and finding the syntax for the .fetchmailrc file, I found on a website how to change the permissions for the .fetchmailrc file. This is now working when I log in as me and start it up - I will look at making it run from root later when I have more time.
I do have a question now related to the flip side - sending mail from my server. When I send mail from my server using the webmail piece or the Mail app on the server I received this message:
    <[email protected]>;;: host smtp-server.mycableisp.com[00.00.000.000] said: 553 5.1.8
<[email protected]>;;... Domain of sender address [email protected]
does not exist (in reply to MAIL FROM command)
To fix this I put in the Reply-To a different valid account like [email protected] - this suppresses the error, but my mail is not going anywhere. The recipient does not get the message that was sent.
    1. How can I fix this so my mail flows out and gets delivered?
    2. If I change the server name to something like domainname.net, would this fix #1?
Here is the interesting part - If I create the message in Mail.app that has a From field (not webmail - which I will be using 99% of the time) everything flows through the mail server and gets delivered.
My logs are empty in the Server Admin utility.
I appreciate being able to learn more about this.
