Setting up a mirror

During the course of (the excellent) LCA I spoke to a number of people about setting up an official mirror here in New Zealand (the one we currently have is somewhat 'under the radar').
I am now getting questions about how much bandwidth, disk space etc we would require.
Bearing in mind that the Arch community here is not a huge one (and our physical isolation means that it is unlikely that anyone from outside the country would be likely to use it), can anyone provide me with some rough and ready details about other mirrors that would inform these conversations?
Thanks.

the thing about bandwidth is that it's relative =P. The main arch mirror probably gets tons of traffic, while a new, lesser-known mirror may get very little.
in either case, it probably doesn't amount to much in the world of dedicated hosting.

    Hi Team,
I am trying to setup DB Mirroring in our setup and Need your help here!
I've 3 servers (2 (Principal and witness) of them are in one machine and 1 (Mirror) is in other machine) setup ... Firewalls are turned off on all 3 of them.... I want to set them up as Principle, mirror and witness respectively.... Before configuring the mirroring,
I backed up the database on Principal and restored it on Mirror database (Restore With No Recovery) . I did it first for the DB backup file and then the transaction log file.......
Now, when I configure mirroring on my my principle server and after choosing my respective serves are principle, mirror and witness. When I am trying to start mirroring I am receiving the below error,

  • Setting UP a Mirror Hard Drive

OK so I have a Leopard Server that has 3 hard drives, so I thought that I would set it up so that it mirror's in case of hard drive failure... But apparently I am not smart enough to do this on my own so I'm calling out for help... Could someone please dummy proof this for me... :-
    Specs.
    Mac OS 10.5.6
    Xserve G5
    2 GHz
    5 GB RAM
    It says no RAID installed
Main Server HD = 500 GB
    Backup #1 HD = 250 GB
    Backup #2 HD = 250 GB
USB External Drive = 1 TB
I'm also in the process of setting up Synchronize Pro that was just recently purchased for backing up...
    Greatly appreciate the help...

Your only mirror option is to mirror the two 250GB drives. You'll then need need to either re-install or clone your OS onto that mirror and reboot.
This can all be done via the GUI (Disk Utility.app) or the command line (diskutil), whichever you prefer.
To use the GUI, select one of the 250GB drives, then select the RAID tab.
Drag each of the 250GB drives to the RAID set list and make sure the RAID Type is set to mirror.
Once that's done you can use the restore tab to clone the boot drive to the new mirror. You can do this live, but if the server is busy you would be better off booting from the install DVD and running Disk Utility from there (avoids issues of trying to clone active files).

  • Errors setting up database mirroring

The server network address TCP://jhjkasdgjkadg.asdg.sdg.sdfg.:5022 can not be reached or does not exist.  I have SQL 2008 R2 mirroring with another SQL 2008 R2 using a sql 2005 as the witness.  Trying to get HA mirroring.  The IP is there
and reachable via telnet over the 5022 port.  This error doesn't make sense or tell me anything.

The only thing on this whole page (link) that I haven't done is where you require a domain account to manage the SQL services.  The server was setup with SQL to run locally with a local service account without being on a domain by the vendor.  We
added the server to the domain, but left the services alone since they were working.  I'll need to setup the services on both servers to run on a dedicated SQL domain account.  Do I need to use the same domain account for both servers' services?
For instance, say it is called SQLSERVICE and is a domain account.  And I was planning to use SQLSERVICES to make the connections (configure security and endpoints settings) as I was going to use to run the services on the two mirrored servers.
I have given this account full access to the database, it is a sysadmin Is there any issue with doing this?  Is that recommended or not recommended?  The account configured for accessing the witness as well, but does not need to be able to
manage any databases on the witness.
    Question regarding the services:
I know to change the account running the services, I'll need to restart these SQL services.  Are there any potential problems with changing the local service accounts to use domain service accounts?  Is there anything else I need to take into consideration
    besides restarting the services?
Is it ok that I don't use that same domain service account (SQLSERVICES) to run the services on the witness server?  I do have the permissions for the SQLSERVICES account to connect to and view the SQL servers on this node, just didn't set it to run
the services.  The witness server is completely unrelated to this project and I'm trying to make as few changes to it as possible.  I don't know if changing the service accounts will break other things that it is currently doing.

  • HT5019 how do i set display / video mirroring to be default?

I've got a TV connected to my Mac, and when I boot up, I have to manually set display mirroring.  Can this be configured as a default setting?

    There's an add-on for that.
Usually I suggest this one, but it's not yet updated for Firefox 5:

  • Setting up XServe mirrored drives using disk utility

We are getting ready to format a server and reload the OS. We currently have 4 drives (250gb) each. I want to know the best way to set the drives up so they will be redundant. Do I include the first drive, which will contain the server software? This is an older G4 XServe box with 2gb of memory. I do not have a RAID card in this server. This will be software RAID.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Scot

Depending on how much redundancy you're looking for you can do it a number of ways, but here are the basics.
    1) Boot from your installation media
    2) After you choose a language you can invoke the Disk Utility
    3) Use DU to wipe the disk and create a RAID 1 - add desired disks to the RAID*
    4) Once the RAID is finished it will appear as a single drive
    5) Quit Disk Utility and return to the Installation process and install the OS on the "Disk" which is actually the new RAID.
The set-up you want dictates the "desired disks" in step 3 above. Usually people create one mirror of the system disk so they have a disk to boot from if the primary drive fails. If the main system disk fails you simply pop out the bad drive and reboot off the mirror. You could do more than that but it really is overkill. If you really want more protection use the other disks for making back-ups so you can rollback or find accidently deleted files rather than more copies of the same disk.
    Hope that helps,
    =Tod

  • Qosmio G30-163 asks if I'd like to set HDD2 for mirroring

I've just received my new G30-163. Every time I switch it on it asked if I'd like to set up HDD2 for mirroring. I always hit cancel, but it repeates the request with every start up. As a result, my second drive does not show up and can not be used. I have tried reinstalling the whole system from the disk provided, but I still get the same request upon completion.
I really don't want to have to go through sending the computer back, so I'm hoping you can tell me how to fix it from here.

I dont know how you have changed this option but as far as I know the RAID mirroring can be set in the BIOS.
As far as I know Toshiba strongly discouraged changing the RAID configuration in the BIOS because selecting the wrong settings might destroy the data on your hard disk drives.
In some special circumstances, however, configuring the RAID in the BIOS is required, e.g. to prepare a fresh hard disk drive for RAID operation
But please take extra care when changing the RAID configuration to avoid accidental loss of data!
    1. Turn on your notebook and press [ESC] until a message appears: "Check system. Then press [F1] key."
    2. Press [F1] to enter the BIOS Setup.
    3. Press [PGDN] twice to move to the third BIOS page.
    4. Move the cursor to the Create State entries and change the states as required (you cannot change the Current State entries).
    5. Press [Space] to cycle through all possible RAID scenarios possible.
    6. Then move the cursor to Execute Creation.
    7. A message appears at the bottom of the screen:
"Warning: If you change RAID array, you need to install OS again."
    8. Press [Space].
    9. Another message appears at the bottom of the screen: "Are you sure? All data on the HDD(s) will be destroyed. Do you really want to do this? If "Yes", please type the key string which is written in the manual."
    10. Enter [1][2][3][4] and then [Enter].
    11. Finally press [END] to exit the BIOS Setup and [Y] to confirm any other BIOS changes.
    Note:
The RAID-1 (mirroring) stored data twice (on both HDD) so that even if there are problems with on of the HDD the other HDD can be used to recover the data.
Please read more about RAID in your user manual!!!

  • Is an EQ setting on itunes mirrored on the ipod?

    Hi,
I have been playing with the EQ settings. My preference is jazz, but that is too bright for some albums. If I change the EQ setting for an album on itunes, is that setting mirrored on the ipod when I sync? Or do all of the tracks on an ipod play at the EQ setting that has been selected on the ipod?
    Thanks

Only the preset iTunes EQ values can be transferred so that songs on the iPod play back with the setting assigned to different songs in iTunes. Custom values (e.g. one's you have made yourself) cannot.
Here's a link about the EQ and how to assign a setting in iTunes and how to make sure the iPod plays back with that setting.

  • How do I set the default external monitor setting to NOT mirror displays?

Greetings folks. I take my Lion macbook all over the place, and frequently plug into projectors to present. I NEVER mirror my display, and always use the projector and on-screen displays as separate displays, yet when you plug in a new projector to the MacBook Air (or MBP) it always defaults to "Mirror Displays" in the arrangement tab. Is there a way to change that to NEVER default to mirror displays?

I've tried that, and then created my installer, but it defaults back to having auto update checked, or in the ON position. I want it to default to being OFF so any new installs or upgrades that I send out do not turn it back on.
We manage all computers here, and do not want users doing any updates.

  • Mirrored RAID Set Questions

I initially set up a mirrored RAID set up on my system drive as a means of backing up my files. I've since decided I'd like to use Time Machine instead. When I try and break up the RAID set using Disk Utility, a lock icon appears next to the RAID set and I'm unable to "delete" the set.  My guess is that I need to reboot off a different system, but since Lion didn't come with an install disc, and since Lion doesn't set up a Recovery HD on RAID sets, how would I go about unlinking this mirrored RAID set?
Conversely, I inadvertantly unlinked a different RAID set and would like to reconnect them, but Disk Utility says it'll erase all the data on the drives before it establishes the connection.  Is there a way to reconnect a mirrored RAID set that has been disconnected?

For the first question, go back to the App Store download Lion again but before it begins the install stop the process and create a flash drive installer. See How to make a bootable Lion install disc or drive .
Remember you have to make sure the install process doesn;t proceed because once Lion is installed the installer app will be removed from your HD.
Sorry can;t help with the second question.
    regards

  • Mirrored Disk Set Raid 1 Question

    Hello,
I set up a mirrored drive on my test xserve and it seems to flow nicely. I have been thinking about doing this for my production servers like my email server and file servers. Has anyone had any bad experiences using the software raid in a production environment? If it is just there as a feature to list on the web, I will not do it. If it is a nice and solid feature, I will move forward with it.
Any opinions would be helpful to me.
    Cheers.

Virtually ALL my production servers use RAID 1 mirrors.
There's no issue with it as far as reliability is concerned. The write overhead is more than compensated for by the ability to sleep at night.

  • How to Mirror a user in CUP - Compliant User Provisioning

    Hello
We are setting up CUP GRC 5.3 SP12
I currently do not see any way in the application for the requestor to just request that they want a new hire set up like (mirror) user x. Does this functionality exist? It appears the manager of the request would have to look up employee x (the mirror) and select all of the roles that user currently has in the system, and select them while in CUP. it seems like there should be a way to mirror or pull up someones current access in SAP and select those roles with just one click. Please let me know if this is possible and how your company deals with this issue if you are currently using CUP.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Vitale,
You can do so with CUP 5.3. There is one option in CUP which helps you u select the role in that request like some user already had. When creating request, click on select role button. On next screen select type of access Model My access by option. Now you can search a user and select it. After that CUP will bring all role that this user had for the corresponding system. now u can select all, if you want to create a mirror image. Afterwards submit the request.
    Kind Regards,
    Srinivasan
