SETTING UP A NETWORK HELP

I have been having problems with my network, so I need advice on the best way to set one up please.
I have a Mac Pro Quad and two pc's linked through a router.
x1 pc is Windows 7
x1 pc is Vista
My current network keeps dissapearing on me and I have file loss so all comments welcome
Thanks

Hi,
sorry i'm not sure what detail you will need, It's a wired speedtouch router supplied by Zen internet. This is a new router but I had the same problem with my previous router.
So basically the router is connected o the dsl line & x3 computers.
I use the mac for the design work then send the files to the vista ( the rip ) computer to print with a shared folder on the pc.
I use the windows 7 computer to do the paperwork, download attachments then transfer them over to the mac via a shared folder on the pc.
I drag files into the shared folder then try to get them on the mac but it's a 50/50 chance I can see them. the same when I save direct to rip computer sometimes it's there and somtimes it's not. No logic to it and very random, some days it works other days not at all the next it works for a couple of hours then stops working.
I'm not sure if it's anetwork problem but I have tried everything else including the replacement of the router - I taught mysef how to set the network up so thought it could be this at fault????
thanks alistair

It worked as a charm, and thanks Brisbin33 for the autostart.sh tip.
So the thing that caused my whole system not to work as it should was that I forgot to put a "&" after conky?
haha that´s kinda anoying I have been sitting and looking through like a milllion files looking for the answer
    But again, really thanks!
    /Neuwerld
that little "&" sends the conky process to the background freeing up the current process (your autostart.sh script) to finish doing what it's doing so you can move on to running openbox itself.  with this in mind, it should be obvious why keeping conky in the foreground would cause problems.
also, replacing it with (sleep 1 && conky) & means... wait a second, when that's done successfully (&&) run conky, and put all of that () to the background.  that way openbox comes up immediatly and only a second later you've got your panel and monitor.
all this after .xinitrc and before openbox

  • Need help setting up wirless network

Hi all, I am new at setting up wireless networks. I am thinking about setting up a wireless network and share out my internet connection with a neighbor. The only problem is my neighbor is 800ft away from me. There is also a line of trees in the way. I would say the tree line line is 50 from one side to the other. Would there be a way for me to get the signal through the trees to the other side by using high gain antennas pointed at each other with the signal going through the trees? If so exactly what equipment do i need on each end to accomplish this? There is another way I thought I might be able to get around this as well. Im my backyard about 300ft away is a large metal shop. From the side of the shop I can see my neighbors house with a clear view nothing in the way. How can I get the signal from my house to the shop and to my neighbors house that works well? I know that this can be done just not sure what to buy to get it down. Your thoughts and suggestions please!! Thanks, Joey

If you have access to the metal shop you might be able to set up two or three WAP54GPE's since they have a internal high gain antenna.  You would have to set them up in repeater mode from a wireless routers signal from your house that would also need a high gain antenna.  As a rule of thumb those AP's would decrease the bandwidth by half so keep that in mind.  If you have a very good fast connection then you might be able to do that.  The WAP54GPE's would have to be mounted to the outside of the external walls.  Even that distance is really pushing the limit of the wireless strength.  If you are going to attempt that I would make the neighbor buy the hardware.

  • How do I set up different network locations with different wifi?

I am having an issue setting up different network locations with different wifi profiles on each. I want to do this to enable fast switching of wireless networks. In my house I have two wireless networks, my own personal one and one that is created by using a wifi modem supplied by my company. If I use the company wifi network then I can get into all my work applications without having to enable VPN access separately. It is also faster. However, they also block many applications including sending email from my personal email account, dropbox, etc. So throughout the day I need to switch wireless networks back and forth.
I was looking for a faster way to switch and thought I would try network locations. Was able to set up a new network location without issue. However it seems that whatever wireless preferences, changes, or wifi network order I put into my "Work" location it carries over to my other location which is the standard "Automatic".
What I would like it to have my "Work" location only to be able to connect to my work wifi and my other network (Automatic) to just connect to my home wifi only. That way I can enable faster wifi switching and can even use my launcher program (Alfred) to provide shortcuts.
    Anyway to do this?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Just thought I would bump this up in the conversation. Doing a further search I came across this discussion which is similar: Connecting to a wireless network via applescript?
However, I tried to build the Automator application as discussed and cannot get it to work. Very much a novice at Applescript and Shell Script but have created customized Automator services before. All I get now is "Shell Script command encountered an error". No more detail. I copied and pasted the script as shown in the email thread. Is there any other line or command I need to place in front of it?
    Thanks again for any help

  • Trying to set up wireless network on PC with Airport Express

I'm helping a friend set up his network with AirPort Express. He's got a modem attached to his PC, and currently has a router that sends a wireless signal to a receiver on the PC in the other room. Now he's added a Mac, and the old router/receiver doesn't work with Mac. So he bought an Airport Express.
I've turned on the Airport, and first I connected the ethernet cable from the modem to the AirPort. Per the AirPort utility I put on the PC, it couldn't find it (got the flashing amber light). So then I took out that ethernet, and I hooked up the ethernet directly from the CPU to the AirPort. Suddenly, it was found, and it took me step by step through the set up. It asked for password info from our internet provider (??why would I have that info??), so we just hit "enter". Then it couldn't set up the network, and said to check the "manage network settings". I've tried everything. Not only can I NOT manage to create a network, but now NEITHER ethernet cable will cause any recognition in the AirPort. All I get is the blinking amber light. I'm about to throw all the computers out the window...it really should not be this difficult. I've set up networks in my own home, before, with both PC and Mac, and never had these problems. So, now, I've had to relink up the old router/receiver in order to send out this call for help. Can anyone suggest anything else to try before I use these computers for target practice?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jennifer
P.S. The main PC w/modem is on Vista with service pack 2.0...since I can't even get that one working with AirPort, I hardly think it matters what the other computers are...

I had some initial problems too. Make sure that you have the latest Airport Utility in the utilities folder. I used that to correct the problems I had when I first got Time Machine. I recommend resetting everything through there to get it working right.
Mine is not set up to run an n network because my macs are all g and b compatible. Does the airport utility see the time machine? And if so, does it have a green light in the utility?

  • A few questions about setting up a network drive

    Hello,
I have been trying setup a private server on my home network. I have a Netgear WNDR 3800 and have been trying to hook up my 2TB external drive to the router.
I have been trying to decide how I want to format the drive, and how many partitions I should use.
The reason I have a 2TB drive is because I needed a work space to create a image of a corrupt 500GB drive. The 500GB drive had my entire digital life on it, and it was almost lost. I dont want to encounter the same issue with a 2TB drive because at that point I feel like any issues would make it difficult for me to recover the data due to work space size issues. This is why I am thinking about using several partitions, but I am not sure what issues this might present.
As far as format goes; the router says it supports read/write with FAT 16/32, NTFS, EXT 2/3, and I know it works with HFS. Here are the things that I am trying to do with the drive. (in order of importance)
Use it as a Time Machine backup location for 1 possible more MBP's
As a media sever to stream downloaded movies and music to A/V reciever (Pioneer VSX-822)  and possibly other devices on the network
Act as a temporary storage location to swap files between devices or operating systems
If possible not keep media on my computer and stream it from the network drive when I am home
And, thats all I can think of right now. If there is something else useful I am missing that would need special attention in setting up a network drive let me know.
So, I have had no problems getting the drive to connect and show up on the network when I use HFS. I have also been able to get multiple partitions to show up; been able to back up to different partitions; including time machine on one partition.
So here is where I am running into problems; the router bios allows you to enable a media sever. I believe the router tries to do something with DLNA. DLNA I believe allows for a similar functions to airplay and cloud for basically all compatible non apple products. I dont care if I use DLNA, or Airplay. I just want to be able to access my music library over the network without having to have my computer open, or my iphone on me..ect.
So I was wondering if anyone could help me out, or if there are any articles I should look at that I might have missed while I have been researching.
Edit: I am sorry if this is posted in the wrong section, I figured the best people to ask about filesystem compatability and ease of use was going to be the System software section

  • I am facing wifi and mobile 2G signal issue after upgrading to IOS 6 from IOS 5 in IPhone 3GS. Please help, restoring setting even didn't helped.

I am facing wifi and mobile 2G signal issue after upgrading to IOS 6 from IOS 5 in IPhone 3GS. The mobile carrier signal as well as WIFI suddenly drops zero and are then restored automatically. Sometimes i cannot conenct to WIFI even standing infront of WIFI router. Please help, restoring setting even didn't helped.

Update: my phone's connecting to the WiFi again. I don't know what did the trick. I did nothing since reinstalling the software. It hadn't worked then, it is now. I tried connecting to my dad's phone's hotspot( he uses a Moto G), and it worked. I then tried connecting to the WiFi at a friend's house, and when I came back home, my phone was able to connect to my WiFi! Is it of any significance that my friend's router doesn't require a password? My issue has been resolved( for now; I hope I'm not counting my chickens before they've hatched). For anyone facing a similar issue, I suggest you try everything I did:
    1. Turn your router off for a minimum of 30 seconds, turn it back on and try connecting.
    2. Click on the WiFi network you are connected to, scroll to the bottom, tap "Renew Lease".
    3. Do a soft and hard reset.
    4. Reset network settings.
    5. Back your data up, erase all content from settings menu, restore from backup.
    6. Reinstall your software( put it in recovery mode).
I am not sure which of the above worked for me. Make sure you try everything. If none of the above works, take it to a genius bar or an authorised service provider. Good luck! :)

  • How to change LACPDU timer setting on Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver

We’re installing our first Windows 2012 R2 server, and one of the network settings is different from what’s on a comparable Windows 2008 R2 server, and it's not what our network group would like to see connected to their switches.  Both servers have
2 NICs teamed using the LACP protocol and are connected to 2 different switches for high availability.  In both cases I just teamed the NICs with whatever driver was on the server.
On the 2008 R2 server (the one our network group likes), it’s an Intel driver, “Intel(R) Advanced Network Services Virtual Adapter”.  On the 2012 R2 server it’s a Microsoft driver, “Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver”.  The setting that
our network group is concerned about is the LACPDU timer setting.  Apparently it can be either “fast” or “slow”.  What they see on the switches is that on the 2008 Intel driver NICs the setting is “slow” and on the 2012 Microsoft driver NICs the
setting is “fast”.  The switches are expecting “slow”.
I spent some time searching on Microsoft.com and other places, as well as poking around on the server, but I couldn’t find that setting or how to change it on the Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver.  Does anyone know how I can change it?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
According to my knowledge, we can’t change the value of LACP timer.
    Here is a related question,
How to change LACP timer-value on Windows server 2012 Network Teaming, from short to long?

  • Unable to set my Wifi network!

I just got my my first airport extreme router last evening. I have been struggling to set it up as an extender with my existing Netgear Wi-Fi router, for which I have have had to attach it to my net gear router through ethernet cable. However, after I am able to set it up, the moment I disconnect the ethernet cable, it goes off line and the airport utility stops recognizing it.
I really do not care if I set it up as a bridge or as a new connection. The idea is to set up separate network for my Apple products and to boost the signal strength.
    Please help. Thanks.

Both of these gentlemen assured me that this was the best product.
I am sure that they meant well, but unfortunately both gentlemen were wrong in their advice.  It would have only taken them a few seconds to pull up the product information on the AirPort Express.
Would you by any chance have an idea if Airport Express would also not be able to serve the purpose?
The AirPort Express cannot do what you want.
A simple look at the product literature for the AirPort Express will confirm this for you:
Extend an existing Wi‑Fi network’s range.
If you already have a wireless network in your home and want to extend its range, AirPort Express can help. Just place it in range of your primary base station — an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express

  • Won't connect to wifi network - HELP!

    New iPod touch yesterday.
Won't connect to my wireless network.
Finds the network, but when I try to connect, it tells me 'Unable to connect to network ""'
Have tried resetting the ipod touch, and restoring it to factory settings. Have tried setting up the network again from scratch. Have tried different encryptions (WEP, WPA1, WPA2). Have tried making the network unsecured. But NOTHING has made any difference.
My Macbook pro and my iMac both still connect to the network perfectly fine.
    But not the iPod touch.
Have spoken to Apple Support, and they talked me through all the same things I had already tried, only to conclude that there was clearly 'something wrong', and I would need to send it off for repairs.
    I am not impressed.
    Any ideas, anyone???

I had the same problem. I found that it pulls up the IP address fine but the DNS needs to be manually entered. If you go into the wifi settings of the touch there is a field titled DNS, if this is blank you will not be able to connect. The easist way to find the DNS address is to have a laptop connected via the wireless connection. In the start menu select run, next to open field type the letters cmd, this should bring up a small black box, scroll down until you see the dns address, type it into the ipod exactly as it appears, periods and all. Hope this helps!

  • Routes, gateways, and networks -- Help Please

    Hi Linux gurus:
I have a problem that I know you will help me resolve...
I have two network cards in my Linux box.
    1. public network:
    10/100
    192.168.1.102
    default gw: 192.168.1.1
    netmask: 255.255.255.0
I want this one routed to my router for internet/public use
    2. private network 1000mpbs
    192.168.2.181
    default gw: none
    netmask: 255.255.255.0
I don't want this one routed at all. It is used for backups, moving files, etc and is called by individual servers using /etc/hosts.
Now problem is that I can't get out and/or in to the box. It appears as though the default gateway on this system is 192.168.2.254. I set up the network via the gui and it appeared to be working, but alas it is not. It looks like things are only talking via the 192.168.2.X network, and that is not what I want...and from the outside world, nothing at all is talking to it.
