Setting up a new hard drive ?

I went ahead and successfully changed my 250gb WD hard drive to a 500gb Seagate 3.5" in my imac G5, which was a second hand computer (late 2005 model, previously running Tiger 10.4.6, stable & good condition - but had no MAC OS X installation DVD)
The powerbook G4 install DVD and Leopard install DVD are not working. (This i realized later while researching that apple installation DVD are system specific - wonder how this is done)
Initially, I tried to clone (using SuperDuper) my powerbook G4 start-up partition on to a new external firewire drive and then connected it to the imac. It powers on, but did not recognize the firewire drive. "press C+ hold down" or any other button didn't work. Then I repeated the same using Apple Ipod 20gb with firewire cable. Nothing worked.
I had to beat around the bush and find out about Open Firmware, then on restarting into the firmware, it asked for a password -(didnt know that). Then proceeded to reset the PRAM which went fine after 3 restarts and voila !!
Now, my Imac powers on, recognizes Mac OS X install DVD as i press C, the display shows Apple logo for about 30 secs, (can hear DVD & empty 500gb hdd whirring in background) and then there is this new logo " ( / ) " shows up - like a No Parking symbol.
This happens with the firewired Apple Ipod (containing bootable clone of my powerbook G4)
{the imac recognizes the start-up ipod on restarting, shows Mac OS X 10.4 symbol when I press the command+option key.} After about 30 seconds, apple logo comes up, shows "busy" working in the background. Then, the new logo - like " ( / ) " No parking symbol appears.
Can anyone explain what I should do further. I contacted Apple, they said ordering the specific new Imac G5 Tiger install discs will take another 2-3 weeks. I dont want to revert to my old 250gb disk.
Kindly advice and help me to fix this thing up.
Any help is very much appreciated. Many thanks.

If it recognizes the Leopard install disc, try to go to First Aid>Disk Utility and select your drive and then Partition it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). What follows is a more comprehensive instruction from Indiana University's Knowledge Base.
+If your install disc is for Mac OS X, follow these steps:+
+1. From the Installer menu, select Open Disk Utility... . In the window that opens, on the left, click the icon for the drive you would like to initialize or partition.+
+2. To the right, click the Partition tab.+
+3. In the pop-up menu under "Volume Scheme:", choose the number of partitions to be created during the initializing process. By partitioning your drive, you divide it into multiple volumes that can hold different file and operating systems. For a basic installation of Mac OS X, just one partition is necessary.+
+4. After you've chosen the number of partitions you want, you can adjust their sizes by dragging the graphical handles that represent the partition borders.+
+5. Click each of the partitions to adjust its properties. Under "Volume Information", you may choose the format you would like to use. The default choice will be Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), depending on the version of the operating system you have, and typically it should be the one you use.+
+6. Once you've chosen your volume scheme, click the Partition button.+
+After your drive is formatted and partitioned, you may continue with other installations from your install disc. Of course, such an installation will be necessary before you can boot (start up) from your newly partitioned hard drive.+
Hope this helps,

  • How to set up a new hard drive?

I've just gotten my mom's old MacBook Pro from her after she's bought a new one (this one is 15-inch, mid-2010), and I want to swap out the 500g hard drive in it for a 750g, 7200 RPM one that I bought from Seagate. I plan on taking it to a computer repair store and just have them swap the drives, nothing else. My question is: if my new Seagate drive is completely blank, how do I install OSX on it? Just to be clear, I have a backup of my old computer with the exact same drive, which was running 10.8.2, so I do have a time machine backup ready to go. When the new hard drive is inserted, does anyone know what I can do? Could I just plug in the hard drive and time machine automatically does its thing? Do I have to install Mountain Lion on the drive in a different way first? I just wanna know what's going to happen.
    Cheers!

You have to format the drive before you do anything. And there's really no reason to take it to a computer repair shop - you can do it yourself.
Simply get an enclosure and put your 'old' drive it in. Install the 'new' hard drive into the hard drive bay. Boot from the old disk in the enclosure and use Disk Utility to format the new drive ("Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your old drive to your new internal.
A good enclosure can be found for as little as $20 - OWC has them but so should a computer shop in your area.
Quite easy to do - here's a user tip on cloning - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4122.
    Good luck,

  • Permissions set up on new hard drive

Set up a new drive on one of my other networked machines. it is a stand alone drive that has no system on it. I can access it on my LAN, and download from it, but am unable to upload any file from my machine. "Drive cannot be modified." Clicking on the Authnticate button and entering the machine's admin username password says I cannot because I do not have sufficient privilages.
    Permissions problems?
Permission settings for both drives on that machine seem to be identical.
    Very confusing.

    Hi Kurt,
You can set up a sharepoint on the computer with the new drive. It's complex in the NetInfo Manager but easy with this application .

  • New Hard Drive Won't Recognize My Time Machine Backup

I maxed out the space on my MacBook hard drive, so I bought a new 1TB hard drive to replace it. (I keep a TIme Machine backup of my computer on a external Passport)   I installed the new hard drive, loaded up Snow Leopard and then it did the whole "Welcome" thing and asked if I wanted to set up the new hard drive. I went through the process and it asked if I wanted to transfer information to the new hard drive.  I selected "transfer information from a Time Machine Backup" but when I hit "continue", it doesn't show my Passport, only "Macintosh HD".   It's weird.  I tried plugging the Passport into a different computer in the house, and it shows up fine.
I'm dead in the water right now.  I have a new hard drive in my laptop with OS loaded on it, but no way to transfer my data from my Time Machine Backup to it!  Any ideas why it won't show the Passport Drive?
Thanks - I'm really stuck right now.

  • How to copy iphoto library folder from Time machine to new hard drive

How do I copy my iphoto library and music library from my time capsule to my new hard drive?
I have a Macbook pro - 2.53 GHz - 4 GB memory.  I just replaced my hard drive to 500 GB and upgraded to OX 10.9.4. I created a new user account and login password for the new hard drive.  I copied my documents folder to external drive before the old hard drive failed, but I was not able to copy over my iphoto library or imusic library.  My old hard drive was regularly backed up on my time capsule (1TB).
I used migration assistant to transfer my user account to the new hard drive (1 of 3 on the time capsule).  The data transferred successfully, but at login the login name  does not match the user folder. Nor do any of my passwords allow me to login to the transferred username/account.  When I login to the account that I set up on new hard drive I can see the userfolder migrated in but the folders do not allow entry.
What can I do now at least to get my photos on the time capsule onto my current hard drive? Can I go into my time capsule like an external hard drive and simply copy over my iphoto library from the last back up of the old hard drive?

You probably tried to move a user account from your TC to your computer that was already active on the computer.. this is one of the no no's that pondini lists.
    See how to migrate. http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
There is a huge amount of info there about transferring files.. that you must not have a user account of the same name as the one you migrate.. and how to transfer files between migrated accounts.
He also has specific info on moving itunes and iphoto stuff here.
    Q15 http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
You might need to fix up permissions or reset the password for the account.
    There is details here..
How to reset admin password iMac
I have had to do that myself.. once you reset the password you will be able to login to the account.

  • Can I start new hard drive set up again?/time machine info missing!

Hi, hoping for some guidance as I think I've made a mistake with my new hard drive set up, and now my time machine hasn't transferred everything over as I've folders missing!
My hard drive packed up & a new 10.6 was installed on my Macbook Pro.  Previously running on 10.5.8 which was backed up to time machine 3 week ago.  I switched on and went through the 'set up assistant' but when asked 'Would you like to inherit (or reuse) the backup?' I think I chose 'Don't backup now'  because I thought I could do my time machine later!  I now know I have chosen the hard route!!
Then I tried the 'migrate assistant' - it took 1.5hrs - desktop has screen shots etc as before but I couldn't access thing like 'my pictures' in bridge etc. The dock has LR, PS, Bridge etc as before too.  Then I deleted the new admin set up (so I had only my old admin.)  I restarted - no change.  I then tried 'migration assistant' again but transfered only 'Other files and folders' because when all ticked there wasn't enough room (-81gb)
Now I can go into LR catalog it only has 2 folders (instead of more than 20), and in Bridge I have files & folders, but on accessing them I get 'Items could not be found. It may of been moved or renamed.'
I've looked into erase & install - but I don't have the disc. Maybe I should go back to the shop who installed 10.6?  Can I start again so I can transfer from time machine in the set up?
Any advise on how I can get my info back would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks, Heather

I have the same problem, but it is happening with various USB drives including an iphone. If I have any of these connected via a USB hub to the MacBook Pro, they mount and operate fine until I attempt to copy large files to them. Randomly, during large file transfer, the drive will suddenly disappear and I'll get the same error as if I had yanked out the USB cable without unmounting it.
    This is happening with:
    * A standard (Lacie) powered 500GB USB drive mounted normally.
    * A standard (Lacie) powered 500GB USB drive being used as a Time Machine disk (it errors/unmounts during Time Machine backups).
    * An iphone 8GB during itunes syncs, only when copying large files (like videos).
I have tried two USB hubs, one powered and one not, and both cause the same problems. If I connect any of these drives/iphone directly to the Mac then they work absolutely fine.
I first thought the (unpowered) USB hub was to blame, but when I started using the powered USB hub and saw the same problems I'm starting to wonder if OS X has a bug with regards to heavy I/O to USB devices connected through hubs...?
Davros: my tip would be to connect the drive directly to the computer (not via USB hub) and see if the problem goes away.

  • Setting up time machine/time capsule after fitting a New Hard Drive.

I have replaced my hard drive in my imac 24inch and restored the system from my time capsule. My question is now my time machine is trying to back up to my time capsule but it is already 3/4 full from the old drive in my imac. How do i best set up my time capsule with time machine after installing a new hard drive in the imac. I was hoping that i would restore the system and I would still be able to (after pointing time machine to my time capsule) access old files if needed in time machine. It has presently deleted a lot of older backups but still cannot fit it all in as it just sees a new hard drive worth of info and is attempting to back it all up on my time capsule.

    wjosten wrote:
Me, I would never use Time Machine to do this. What I'd suggest you do is get an exterior enclosure for your new drive. Then use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone your existing drive to your new drive. Once done, verify your clone is bootable & all of your data present. Then swap drives & use your old drive for Time Machine backups(after erasing it). Then get another drive & exterior enclosure to regularly clone your new drive to.
Unless he was swapping for a lower capacity HDD or to a lower capacity SSD, then the old drive would make a lousy Time Machine disk.  However, whenever I swap out a disk I do exactly what you do.  CCC to get the ol drive onto a new one.  Test by starting up to the new (but still external drive).  Then replace the internal drive.
I usually just sell the old drive on eBay.  My Time Machine backup is always 2X the size of the internal drive, which I believe is a bit above recommendations, but works for me.  The price of large external drives is almost the same as smaller internal ones.

  • Set up issues with new Hard drive

    Hi all,
I bought a new hard rive for my late 2008 aluminium macbook. I've got it booted and had issues restroing from time machine back up using the REcovery partition. Such research showed this is an issue and said I should just use migration assistant or via the usual set up when rebooting my macbook with the new hard drive in.
Unfortunately the keyboard does not seem to be responding well of at all and I get stuck part way through the set up process and cant even get to my desktop now.
Any ideas about what is happening and how to solve this???!!
    Many thanks,
    Greg

time machine backups are specific to the mac that creates them, since you had the HD replaced the time machine thinks it's a different mac therefore it won't let you "restore" the data to the mac. that is why you have to "migrate" from the time machine backup to restore it.
this is done either using migration assistant or during the setup assistant (whichever applies in this case)
if the wireless keyboard is not connecting properly, i would suggest using a USB keyboard and mouse to get the data restored and then go into settings and figure out why it's not connecting correctly.
following article tells how to migrate from time machine backup:

hope all goes well for you!

When migrating from time machine to a new hard drive, not all is transferd, only partial documents, applications , settings etc. How can I migrate the latest back-up with all the content.

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is.

  • How to set up an iMac g3 with new hard drive

I have an iMac g3 grafite se, the person before me forgot their admin password so I bought a new hard drive for it but I don't know how to re install the software I turned the iMac on and I just had a grey blank screen would really appreciate some help please I have an iMac software install disc which say Mac OS version 9.1, I have iMac applications cd, all 4 iMac software restore discs and they say Mac OS version 9.1 , 10.0.3 and a Mac OS X version 10.0.3

I have iMac applications cd, all 4 iMac software restore discs and they say Mac OS version 9.1 ,
Boot from the gray system restore disk marked "Disk 1" by inserting the disk and then restarting while holding the C key. It takes a couple of minutes to boot from a CD or DVD but, when complete, you will have access to an installer. I'd install OS9 first to see if the comptuer works.

  • How do you set Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) for new Hard Drive?

I have a new hard drive that I'm about to have installed into my iMac. The drive is a WD1001FALS (Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB). The only concern I have is that by all accounts it is a bit louder than some other drives, although everything being relative I don't know what that means to me since I've not heard it run yet.
Still, the 320GB drive currently in the iMac is absolutely inaudible and while I'll make some concessions for speed and size I'd like to minimize the amount of noise coming out of the box. I know that the drive supports Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM), however its default state is "disabled". Is there a way, either through the OS or third party software to enable this feature?

I just wanted to close out this question.
I never received a clear answer but in the end I don't need to use the function. My concern was that a new WD1001FALS would be louder than the OEM 320GB HDD in my iMac to the point that I wouldn't be happy with it. Not wanting to trade speed for quiet I passed on the Green caviar and went for the Black. After living with it for several weeks I can say that it is very quiet and while I don't know if it's measurably louder than the old drive, it's not enough for me to notice (and I'm pretty picky).
So, I'm happy with the drive as-is, case closed.

  • New Hard Drive

After installing Leopard on my new hard drive (Western Digital Caviar Blue) I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything from the original hard drive that was still in the computer. It ran into some issues with 2 iTunes music files and transfer stopped. So I selected the option of continuing to set up. Not sure if I messed up there. After that was complete I trashed the files in question and ran Migration Assistant again, but it completely skipped iTunes and went onto Applications, where once again it ran into problems with Application Support Files from Adobe/InDesign Templates, etc.
Now I'm not sure what to do. The new HD is the 10.5.6 version (didn't run Software Update because I assumed Migration would automatically update everything) and of course the original HD is the 10.5.8. Should I run Software Update first on that followed by Repair Permissions then attempt to transfer everything again? Or should I start from scratch - erase and reinstall then run Migration again?
Also, with having a very large iTunes library is this the best way to transfer those files?
    Thanks!

    Hi-
Sorry, I may have been a bit obscure....
To be precise, one should boot to the OS X install disc and use Disk Utility to repair the original hard drive and permissions.
You can't repair the boot drive while started to it.
Permissions, yes, but not directory repair.
After that, restart to the usual boot drive, download and install SD!, let SD! do it's thing.
SD! will erase the target drive for the new clone, so using Disk Utility again isn't necessary.
Once SD! is done, you can open System Preferences/Startup drive, and select the new clone as Startup volume.
Restart, and check that all is as it should be (there is no reason that it shouldn't, but DO check).
Once the clone has been verified for function and content, you're all done.
A full clone of a large drive can take a while, so don't do this when you're in a rush.
Maybe start SuperDuper! and go have dinner or something......

  • I purchased mountain lion from apple but never got a disk. How do I install it on my new hard drive, old hard drive failed and is not recoverable according to Apple and Recovery Specialist?

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro with newly installed SATA HD + SSD, I can get mavericks download free but I can't recover photos, apps, files etc from time machine (1TB Time Capsule), I think I was running lion when I started backing up on it but I had updated to mavericks before the HD Failure. When I tried to transfer info from Time Capsule it says " no volumes detected" or something to that effect. I had mucho info backed up on that capsule. Any help appreciated, please spell it all out for me if you can help, I am not at all tech savvy and desperate to get up and going as I am an online student with a fast approaching deadline for course paper. Thank you in advance :)

Step 1: Buy a new Hard drive that can be installed in your MacBook Pro later, and an External enclose to place it in for now.
The MacBook Pro before 2010 can not contain the stand-alone firmware to go to the Internet and get a fresh copy of Mac OS X and install it.
You will need a working Recovery_HD, or to drop back to a 10.6 DVD (if it will Boot on your Mac).
There may be a functioning Recovery_HD on your existing Boot Drive. If you were running 10.7.4 or later and Time Machine, there may be a Recovery_HD on the Time Machine Volume.
    To check:
Hold down the Alt/Option key as you restart. This will slowly draw a gray screen and then add an Icon (over several minutes) for each potentially-bootable volume. If any Recovery_HD shows up, take it, and you will be able to get to Internet Recovery and re-download some version of Mac OS X that can be installed on a new drive.
It is generally far quicker to set up a new drive and install Mac OS X than to struggle with only the primitive tools available only on a DVD or a Recovery_HD. Once you get any version of Mac OS X running, you can get some work done and attempt to salvage first your data, then your drive (if either will be possible).
By NOT trying to Boot from and use the possibly-damaged drive, you improve your chances of being able to salvage some files off it, since blocks will not be over-written by running Mac OS X from it.

  • I have a G5 with a brand new hard drive, when I try and install the os I get a panic we are hanging error. What can I do to load the os

I Get a panic we are hanging error when trying to install the os on a new hard drive on a G5

Yes, the hard drive needs to be formatted and OS X must then be installed.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation.
It's only a lost cause when nothing else works.
