Setting up a new Time Capsule - WAN or Ethernet quandry

Just got a new TC - I am hoping to have it host (or extend) my wireless network off a wired foundation that has a cable modem. I am struggling with which hard-wire port I can use to get it access to the internet. I try plugging the wire into the WAN port and the TC just disappears. I switch it to an Ethernet port and the Airport utility cries foul that I don't have anything in the WAN port! My Cable Modem is buried deep in the basement with a d-link WAN hub connected to it, sharing a wired network through the house. I was under the impression the TC would work (and talk to the internet) if you only hooked it to the rest of your wired network (using the Ethernet ports.) Is that not so? Does it need to be the go-between for your Cable Modem & Home wired network?

Welcome to the discussions!
Since you have a router ahead of the Time Capsule, please check to make sure that you have your TC set for Bridge Mode as follows:
Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
At the bottom of the next page the setting for Connection Sharing should be set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
In this setting, it does not really matter whether you have the ethernet cable from the router plugged into the WAN or LAN port as they all behave the same when the TC is in Bridge Mode.
You may need to restart your modem and router ahead of the TC and you should have internet.

You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

Check item #18 of Time Machine FAQ, particularly the material in #3 of the "How to" section.

  • I am unable to set up my new Time Capsule with my BT Home Hub - every time i connect the ethernet cable from Wan port to Home Hub, the internet signal drops

    Hi there -
I've just purchased a new Time Capsule, and would like to set up a small home network with my Laptop, iMac and wireless printer. I'm following the first steps, but as soon as I connect an ethernet cable between the WAN port of the TC and the ethernet port of the HH, my BT internet connection drops out and I have to restart the HH. Upon which point it drops out again. The airport utility can see my TC, and gets as far as me typing in the new network name and setting up a password, but then it can't quite get through to the next stage. All the time it's just flashing amber.
    Please help!

Setup the TC in bridge mode before you cannot it to the HH.
Simply do the setup fully in isolation. And do it by ethernet.
Setup wireless to create a wireless network.
You can use either same SSID =Wireless name as the HH .. same security same password.
Or use a different name and setup.. totally up to you.
Update the TC and then plug it into the HH by ethernet.

  • How do I set up my new Time Capsule just to back up not as a wireless?

Can anyone tell me how to use my new Time Capsule just for back up not as a wireless router?
I have an ATT Uverse for my wireless service and have not been able to get the two to work together.
I just want to plug my Time capsule in and connect it to my MacBook Pro with an ethernet an click backup.
So far my computer doesn't reconnect the Time Capsule.
    Thank you for your help

You will need to configure the Time Capsule (TC) to join the wireless network provided by the ATT Uverse router, as follows:
Either connect to the TC's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the TC, and then, using the AirPort Utility, change this setting:
AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Wireless tab > Wireless Network Name: <select the ATT Uverse network>
This configuration will allow your Mac to connect by wireless to the ATT Uverse router and perform Time Machine backups wirelessly.
If you want to only do this backups by wire, then you will need to connect the TC directly to the ATT Uverse router by Ethernet, and then, reconfigure the TC as a bridge. You can then connect the Mac to the TC by Ethernet as well for backups.

  • Setting up brand new Time Capsule and it asks for a Password????

Okay, so I'm attempting to setup my girlfriend's new Time Capsule with her brand new MacBook Pro but when I access Airport Utility and it tells me there's a problem with the Time Capsule accessing the internet, I then click to continue to troubleshoot the Time Capsule and it asks for a password. Now, the Time Capsule has never been used before and is fresh out of the box. WHy is there a password? I will say this detail:
That the brand new MacBook Pro that she recently purchased, she had all over her old data and files and settings transferred from her old MacBook. I don't know if that means that it automatically installed a password or anything, but I tried using the computer administrator password and that didn't work. ANyone have any idea what's going on?

jkwells84, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sometimes it does help to read some documentation. Like most routers, the Time Capsule has an admin password to keep others from being mischievous and changing your settings.
The default admin password is "public."

  • Problems with setting up my new Time Capsule.

    Hello.
I've searched through internet several times now and still can't find the answers...
I got an AirPort Time Capsule (3 TB) for Christmas and tried to get it to work today.
When I connected it to the modem (ethernet) and then plugged it in, on my MacBook Air (OS X, Version 10.9) I clicked on the Time Capsule link (or whatever it was called) in the WiFi bar, then did everything I was told to do (filled in the information such as the name of my WiFi, named the 'base' - I mean the Time Capsule; I don't really know how it's called in English since I'm not a native -, blah blah, and then restarted the modem... After a few minutes long wait the only thing that I've recieved was a 'Sorry, something went wrong'. - Or something similiar.) After this happened, I could no longer see the 'Time Capsule link' in the WiFi bar and had to reset the Time Capsule itself.
So here's the question... Does anyone know what to do? Any answer will be much appreciated.
    Thank you very much,
    Markéta Lišková.

We are seeing more and more that auto setup is simply failing.. The problem is Apple preselects certain preferred outcomes from their point of view rather than work with what exists.
But we need some facts before we can tell you how to fix it.
What modem do you have? Type of broadband?
Most important.. is this modem also working as router?
If it is adsl the TC seems to pick that up and immediately wants to take over as router.
Whichever broadband you have.. if the existing modem is also a router, stick to the TC working in bridge mode.
Do this manually. And do it by ethernet.
    Steps as follows.
    1. Reset the TC and plug a LAN port of the TC into ethernet port of the computer.
Open your Network preferences and you should see it exactly as below.. the TC at 10.0.1.1  and the ethernet on 10.0.1.2
Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local.. this is crucial.. and not given enough emphasis in the instructions.. you cannot get the setup to work properly without it. Don't forget to change ipv6 to link-local for wireless as well.
    2. Open the airport utility and go to File / Configure Other.
    3. Type in the IP of the TC.. no password is needed until it is setup. Click OK
    4. You are now in the Manual setup area. And finally YOU can setup the TC.. CORRECTLY.
    5.
As per above.. if the modem is a router.. set the TC to bridge.
    6. Go to the Internet tab and check it is set to dhcp.. it will be by default.
    7. Go to the wireless tab and create a wireless network.
Give it a suitable name. Short .. no spaces and pure alphaunumeric.. is my recommendation.
    8. Go to the Base Station tab and give the TC a suitable name.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric, I strongly recommend.
Click update and now plug the TC into the modem.. ethernet LAN port modem to WAN port of the TC.
All will now work.. because YOU are the BOSS!
Tell us more if your modem is not a router.

  • Setting up a new Time Capsule

I just purchased my first Time Capsule and using the Airport Utility I tried to connect it to my existing network (hardwired to the DSL modem's WAN port). At first the Time Capsule had neither an internet connection nor any DNS servers (2 errors). I managed to get into my DSL modem and identify the DNS Server address so I manually updated the Time Capsule with this information so that now the Airport Utility shows only 1 error (no internet connection). I have found that if I look at the Time Capsule through the Time Capsule's wi-fi network it shows a green light on the Time Capsule but yellow on the internet. If I switch to my other existing wi-fi network the internet connection is fine, but of course I can't see the Time Capsule.....
    Help??

(hardwired to the DSL modem's WAN port).
This is wrong but I am sure it is just a typo.. but just so you know, the DSL modem wan port is the phone line. If it has a secondary WAN port (for later fibre connection for example) do not use it.
You plug ethernet LAN on Modem, to WAN on the TC. I am sure this is what you mean.
Hard reset the TC and start over.
Your modem is also a router. And the TC is in the wrong mode.
I recommend you plug into the TC by ethernet to the computer. Open the airport utility and put the TC in bridge.
Then go to the wireless tab and make sure the wireless is set to create a wireless network.. use the same name as the existing router if you like or use a different name.
Update the TC and see how it goes.

  • Setting up a new Time Capsule (TC)

    Hi,
I read through the discussions and did not see an answer for my problem.
I am using OS 10.6.8 (I can not update my computer to Lion) and Airport Utility 5.6.1.
I set up my new TC but I could not connect to the internet. I thought I followed the set up instructions. Since I could not connect to the internet, I tried to set TC up again. I am not sure what I did but now Airport Utility will not even recognize the TC. Rescan does nothing. So I pressed the reset button on the TC but nothing happens. I have done restarts on my computer and unplugged my router and the TC, but still the same result: AIrport Utility does not find it.
I set up my Extreme (which I used for internet access before I bought the TC) and it worked immediately. I then tried the TC again but Airport Utility would still  not recognize it.  I connected the Extreme to access the internet and look at the discussions and send out this SOS
I am at a loss. What can you suggest?
    Thanks

Thanks for all your help. You all pointed me in the right direction and it took a call to AppleCare to walk me through what I was doing. The "problem" was we recently upgraded to a bundled package from Cox so that the modem was used for internet and telephone. When I unplugged the modem to reset it, the battery for the telphone prevented the reset. Several calls to Cox finally got them to do a remote reset and everything worked immediately after the reset. Just like I expected when I started the process.
And all of the reading that I did in researching the whys of everything I was doing (and not doing) gave me a tip for making that initial back up fast -- using an ethernet cable rather than relying on wireless (for the initial BU).
All is well. Thank you all.

  • Setting Up my new Time Capsule?

I just bought a new TC to replace the Linksys wireless router that I have been using. I have fast access DSL from ATT and have been using the Linksys for my PC's. I recently purhcased an iMac and macbook air. I only have one PC left in the house. I was told that I could use the TC as a wi-fi connection for the PC. I have a DSL modem that I got from ATT that is connected to the Linksys. I just took the Ethernet cable from the modem and connected it to the TC. I then took another cable to go from the TC to the iMac. The Linksys is no longer connected. I went through the set up for the TC and when I was finished it said that I had a problem connecting to the internet. What else do I need to get the internet working.
    Brad

Is the modem in bridge? If not, connect directly to the modem and bridge it.. then go to the internet page and select type of connection pppoe.. I am assuming ATT allows that. Put in your user login and password. Finish the setup.
If ATT do not support pppoe then you should bridge the TC.. and leave the modem doing the routing. There are other options but need further info to help.. THe best way is as above.

  • Flashing Amber when trying to set up new Time Capsule

Tearing my hair out here!  Have spent all evening trying to set up my new Time Capsule but keep getting to the point where I turn on Airport Utility and it says it can't find any AirPort wireless device!  Flashing amber as well...... have reset/ unplugged/replugged / reconnected every cable variation I can think of!  NOT a techie but have usually managed to attach other Apple devices no bother. HELP!!

The amber flashing can be anything. Trivial or major.. look up the error in the airport utility.
Another question - how do I check what is on TC i.e. what has been backed up?
Also I have to get a new HD fitted so am hoping that everything is saved ready for me to take computer into repair shop!
Check the TM display.. by default unless you excluded something, everything is backed up.
But I would strongly recommend you do a disk image as well.. you can do this via disk utility or use a tool like superduper which I think is still free download.
Restoring after a disk replacement is much harder than you think.
Please study Pondini FAQ so you actually understand what TM does and can do..

There is a lot of very helpful info although it is perhaps in need of another reorganise.

  • New Time Capsule: Assign DHCP address and backup to USB disk?

    Hi all,
I am setting up a new Time Capsule and have two questions:
    - I am successfully backing up my MacBook Pro to the internal TC disk. I like loooong backup histories, so I would like to backup my iMac to a separate Time Machine disk attached to the TC via USB. I have googled and not found anyone saying it can be done. I have attached a USB disk and tried to configure TimeMachine to see it, but it is invisible. Is this even possible?
    - I want to assign a specific IP address to a Linux server (Ubuntu Jaunty) on the internal network of the Time Capsule. I can get a "random" DHCP address assigned, but I cannot get a specific one assigned. I have tried to create DHCP Reservations for the Linux box using both its MAC address as well as the DHCP client ID (preferred). No matter what, I still get the random DHCP address. On the linux box, I have made sure to set the Client ID as well as removing the old leases file. Any hints?
Thanks in advance for any help on either front!

...so I would like to backup my iMac to a separate Time Machine disk attached to the TC via USB.
That is not possible with Time Machine.
Time Machine will backup any files residing on your Mac or residing on any disk connected via USB or FireWire directly to your Mac.
Time Machine will NOT backup files residing on a network drive like the USB drive connected to a Time Capsule.
I want to assign a specific IP address to a Linux server (Ubuntu Jaunty) on the internal network of the Time Capsule.
The default settings of the Time Capsule use the addresses 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200 for DHCP clients. If you want this server to have a fixed IP address, simply configure the server to have a manual IP address in the range 10.0.1.201 to 10.0.1.254.

  • New Time Capsule unable to power

One day after setting up my new Time Capsule yesterday, it would lose power, until unplugged then plugged back in. Now it no longer powers up at all. Clearly it needs to be returned, but since I had completed my first backup, I'd rather not have my information on it anymore. Is there a good/easy way to get the data off the drive?

None.. Apple have never yet failed to clear off customers data.. so their record is excellent.. (If you store the launch codes to the ICBM silo in your backyard then maybe you should ask Apple to hand you the drive..)
You could be the first to have your info posted. It is one good reason for using encrypted backups.
Apple sell the unit as sealed.. unlike most real NAS on the market this is not accessible to the public to fix, replace or repair the hard disk. I would not be worried though.

I have a new MacBook Pro Retina, for which I am trying to set up a new Time Capsule.  The Time Capsule is attached by Ethernet cable to my modem, and I have opened Airport Utility.  The Time Capsule is continuously blinking amber, and Airport Utility says "No configured Airport base stations have been found." Has anyone else had this problem?
