Setting up a pop 3 account

I'm tearing my hair out here (not that theres that much left to tear out)
I have Just switched over to apple from pc
In apple mail i have setup a pop mail account its vodafone web mail but you can use it with a e mail client on my pc it was outlook express 6
I'm not having any problems with recieving e mails but with sending them
i have just spent an hour on the phone with vodafone mail & they say its all set up as it should be
outgoing mail is smtp.vodafone.net
this is the bit it wont do they say it shouldnt need a username & password to authenticate outgoing mail but if i try to send an e mail without it i get this
cannot send mail using the server
The server response was: Authentication required
if i put in my password & username as i used to on my pc i get this
cannot send mail using the server
smtp.vodafone.net
vodafone say that all is well i need to contact apple for a solution
has anyone experienced this problem & how did they resolve it
any help would be great

Hi there sorry i started this thread & been away family business
ok i connect to the internet via bt broadband the vodafone mail account is a webmail account that is offered to vodafone mobile customers you can tie it in with your voicemail on your mobile i have had this e mail address for years now if i cannot solve this problem then it really will be a big problem for me to change e mail addresses & a lot of expense to i am at the moment replying to e mails via the web mail in safari but this is very limited & time consuming as any attachments have to be 1st uploaded to the vodafone.net web service sometimes a photo can take up to 5 mins to upload that way
when i used windows i never had a problem for all the years i have been using this e mail address
there must be some setting or piece of info i am missing & its driving me mad

In Mail>Preferences>Accounts tab>Account Information tab - from the 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):' drop-down menu select 'Edit SMTP Server List...', choose the server you want to edit from those listed, click on the Advanced tab. Does that give you the option you're after?

Paul I am also haveing problem with Mac mail and ATT.net account it has work good for over a year and now it keep kicking me say my pass word is rejected. I have been through this with att and have not been able to resolve it. I tired the POP it sill saying I have a problem.

Can't set up a pop email account

I have a new iPhone 4S.
I have 3 email addresses, 2 work fine but my other can only accept mail, I can't send from it. I have deleted the account and set it up again but it's the same. I have just noticed that even though I have put my pop incoming and outgoing server addresses, it has set it up as an IMAP account and I can't seem to change it or even choose to set up a POP account so consequently I can't use it.
I synch my iPad and iPhone though iTunes [I am not using iClud or Mobile Me] and it all synchs fine onto my iPad which is showing the troublesome account as a Pop account and not an IMAP, it's only on my new phone that I cant set it as a POP account.
Can anyone help?

If you updated your existing account then try logging out of it on the iPhone by tapping on the id in Settings > iTunes & App Stores and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on the iPad.
If you created a new account then you can log out of the old account and in with the new one as above, but any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can re-download its content and download updates to its apps.

Does anyone know a workaround for setting up a POP email account using 8? Worked before I upgraded. Apple level 2 support has no idea. Thanks

Cannot set up my POP email account

I have a POP email account from my hosting service. At home I use this with Apple Mail, with the outgoing server to be my ISP. Works fine.
I have tried entering all this info on the Touch, and it spins a long time verifying pop settings" and then fails.
Sometimes I get a dialog about a bad certificate, or about trying without SSL, which i say yes to. But no luck.
My Mobile Me and Google accounts work fine.
Help!?

I cannot seem to set up a 2nd pop account on my Ipad2. No problems setting up the primary but the secondary keeps telling me that either username or password is incorrect. Both are correct. It's driving me crazy. Can someone help?

Maybe I'm not following completely, but you can configure email accounts manually, if you want. Just hold down the Option key when you click Continue on the first screen. You can then choose the type of account and set up the servers as you like.
This help page seems to think you can still use POP with Yahoo.

What settings are you using in Outlook:
Incoming Server name : ?
Port: ?
Connections Security : ?
Authentication Method: ?
What comes after the @ in your email address?

outlook is an email client
yahoo is an email provider
you can do various things you can setup your ipad to sync mails from your email client when you sync it with itunes
