Setting up a proper editing station

Im sure this as been discussed at length and I have found some of my answers in previous post but I am still struggling to understand certain topics.
I have been producing and editing mostly small video projects for the past 6 years, even tough I have edited things that were later broadcasted I was the off-line editor and was mostly concerned with creative decisions. I have finally reached a point where I am ready to make a more serious investment on my editing and color correcting equipment but I lack very important knowledge in some technical areas.
I am having a really hard time understanding what the Blackmagic and Aja cards do, and what you use them for, I understand that its a signal conversion hardware, but I guess I need a for dummies explanation. Can anyone point me to a resource that will help me understand its function or will someone offer an explanation on why I need them and in which scenarios.
I am feeling pretty silly at how I cant figure this out by myself so thank you for you patience in advance.

fair enough I guess its an awful presumptuous question to ask for a resource.
I was never thinking of the need to use it with a deck, but since I was the one that chose that stupid example I accept your duhhh answer.
I was wondering why the signal that I monitor on apple color for instance isent a proper signal to monitor without having it go trough the video card, and no im not even talking or wondering about external monitors, scopes or any other things I just want to understand what the video card is doing.
I get its converting the signal but I would like to know more about how and what its doing.
Im setting up a better station for my own personal projects, im not taking peoples jobs, when I need something done that I dont understand or dont know enough about I hire professional services like Postworks for instance, but I dont understand why it is so upsetting that I would like to learn about something I dont know, im not selling a service i cant provide, I only do the creative part I know my limitations and I wouldnt want to screw anyone over my lack of technical knowledge.
Consider the question answered I will bug someone to explain me when I am paying for the service as I should have done before.

  • I Was About to Set Up Two New Edit Stations with FCPX... What Do I Do Now?

    I've cut on all kinds of nonliner software, but I've always prefered Final Cut Pro. I like using Motion aswell. I’m about to purchase two new editing systems for my TV station and I was hoping to set these work stations up with FCPX.  Right now the station uses older Avids. Unless Apple addresses these issues, I can’t go with FCPX.  I’ve used Final Cut Pro for ten years.  I’m a huge fan and I hope Apple doesn’t ignore these problems.  I can’t believe this is the end of the line for Final Cut Pro. Now I'm thinking of using CS5 Adobe Production Premium instead of FCPX.
    I cannot believe Apple really understands the ramification of what they’ve done and how it affects thousands of professional editors, production facilities, television and network creative services departments world-wide.  We have supported them and have helped them make Final Cut Pro what it is today.  I can’t believe they’ve abandoned us in order to simplify Final Cut, dumb it down for the pedestrian consumer.
    It’s like Coke scraping their original recipe and starting over with “New Coke.”  This is a massive marketing and product blunder.  Hopefully Apple will come out with Final Cut Classic, for those who need to use Final Cut professionally.

    With this release, Apple has made it very clear that there isn't enough money in the professional NLE market.  I suggest people look at the other alternatives out there.  I can relate to your anger, but the fact remains that the divorce is most likely final and its time to make money using another product.

  • What equipment do i need to set-up a home editing station?

    i have been approached by my job to do some editing for them. they are going to pay for me to take a final cut pro class (i graduated from film school in 1998 - right before the big switch was made from flat beds to AVID). Any suggestions of the kind of mac i would need, memory, loading footage, playback monitor, screen, etc?
    Thanks.

    What kind of format will you be working with?
    HD? HDV????? DV? Beta?
    I'd buy the biggest baddest mac you can afford - 2 gigs memory is fine unless you can swing 4. Fill the 4 bays with at least 500gig drives (but....)
    The rest will depend on what format you will be using.

    My Airport wireless is working for my two MacBook Pros and my daughter's iPod, but our iPad, Iphone and other iPod all say they need to set up an Airport Base Station but do not have the proper software.  I'm not sure what to do to remedy this situation.

    This might sound like a silly question, but are you sure the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.) are still trying to connect to the same network from your own Airport router, as the MacBook Pros are? If you tap Settings on them, is the network name next to where it says Wi-Fi, the right one?
    I've got a weird feeling that either in the past couple of days, a neighbour got an Airport device and hasn't set it up yet (causing your iOS devices to try to help), or that perhaps there's an issue with your Airport router and they're noticing it and trying to help out, while for whatever reason, Airport Utility isn't opening itself on the MacBook Pros like it normally should if there's a problem.
    If you open Airport Utility on one of the MacBook Pros, does it report any problems with your Airport device, and can you view/edit the settings on it?

  • High Speed Fibre based video editing stations with Fibre RAID

    Hello. Thanks for checking my post. I hope I can find a solution here…
    So, my situation is this. There are two video editing stations (MacPro 8 Core 2.8Ghz/24GB RAM/4x1TB HD/sATA card/2-23” Cinema) in my office. Each tower has 4TB LaCie Biggest Quadra (through sATA connection).
    About 3 month ago, I started getting claims from those video editors that the file transfer speed is too slow for their work flow. Basically editors move video footages back and force between two LaCie scratch discs. They’ve tried through our office network (managed gigabit) first, but it was too slow for them. So, for an instant solution, I added sATA card on both towers. Then, I suggested them to use sATA direct connection and swap the drive as they need. However, it was almost impossible for both editors to eject/remove LaCie drive and swap out at the same time. (I didn’t think about their work flow…)
    So, they've been using gigabit network to copy files back and force. They do it at the end of the day since it takes many hours. Then, all of the sudden, we started getting very busy and amount of work has got almost doubled. Copy files through network takes all night. And when editors show up early enough morning, file copy is still going. So, we just need to find the better work flow now.
    Since then, I started researching online for solutions. I’ve actually visited a real video editing company and had a tour for hardware set up in San Francisco. I came up with, may be, two ways to resolve this, but I’m not sure. So, I would like your opinion.
    One is to use the 4GB Fibre switch, then add a new network storage device (may be 8 bay model for $5k+), which comes with Fibre connection. This was recommended by the real video editing company, but they didn’t know much about hardware manufacture. What they had was all high end models. Anyhow, in this way, two Macs and network storage will be connected through Fibre switch. If this seems to be a good solution for my case, does anyone have suggestions on brands/manufactures of Fibre switch, and also the network storage device (RAID) with Fibre connection? I’ve talked to FireWireDirect folks in TX, but they didn’t seem to be too helpful…
    Another possible solution, which is more complicated for me is to set up the new server just for the video editing macs with XSAN. After I read its description, it sure sounds like the best way for video, but…..1) its hardware requirement is high 2) Need a new server, 3) Need to buy Promise RAID? (not sure) 4) Needs Mac OS 10.5 server. So, this whole set up looks pretty challenging to me. We use 10.4 Server as our file server. So, I’ve no experience on 10.5.
    Anyhow, if any of you who are in the video industry have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much!

    Thank you very much for your info. I called CalDigit and a person told me that they 're releasing the new product within this quarter. So, I may need to wait till it comes out... As per CalDigit, there is no sharable RAID yet.
    So, I'm still curious, currently how are video editors using Network Storage Device (more than likely RAID) over the network without using SAN among several computers?
    I thought it was easy to find the RAID box with Fibre connection, but I guess not.
    Thank you again for your time. I appreciate it.

  • Set String keySet = props.keySet() not compiled, can someone explain why?

    I just ran into a problem with javac, this code compiles fine in jdeveloper 10.1.3 but doesn't compile with the javac task in Ant 1.6.5
    Compiling these 2 lines
    Properties props = new Properties();
    Set<String> keySet2 = props.keySet();
    results in this error.
    incompatible types
    [javac] found : java.util.Set<java.lang.Object>
    [javac] required: java.util.Set<java.lang.String>
    [javac] Set<String> keySet2 = props.keySet();
    Given the assignment context, why can't the compiler infer that the Set returns by keySet is a Set<String>?
    However, casting p to a Map before calling keySet() compiles fine.
    Properties props = new Properties();
    Set<String> keySet2 = ((Map)props).keySet();
    This is really weird. Could it be just a bug in the javac implementation that comes with Ant? I'm wondering if there's some fundamental about generics that I'm missing. Can anyone shed some light on this?
    Edited by: 982572 on Jan 17, 2013 12:25 PM

    Ah, thanks. I think that answers some of what I didn't get. The part about discarding the generic information makes sense.
    There's something else I'm not understanding.
    Consider this line of code
    Set<String> keySet2 = (Set<String>)props.keySet();
    JDeveloper 10.1.3.3. for some reason is able to compile this code (it's using jdk 1.5.0_06).
    I tried the same code in Eclipse with jdk 1.6.0_26 and it doesn't compile.
    I believe the latter is correct. Set<String> and Set<Object> aren't related so the compiler shouldn't have allowed a cast from one to the other ... but somehow the code is compiling in JDeveloper 10.1.3.3. This is really throwing me off ...
    What's also really weird is that JDeveloper can't compile this line
    Set<String> keySet2 = props.keySet();
    but to me this is pretty much identical to
    Set<String> keySet2 = (Set<String>)props.keySet(); // although it's an explicit cast
    and JDeveloper can compile this fine ...
    So anyway, if props.keySet() returns Set<Object> and at compile time the compiler doesn't allow casting to Set<String>, how would I go about putting everything in the Set<Object> returned by keySet() into a Set<String>? I know I can iterate through the Set<Object> returned and then just add each String to Set<String>.
    This would work,
    Set<? super String> keySet = props.keySet();
    but then it's not really accurate ... even though Object is the only ancestor of the String class, the <? super String> bound suggests that one can put something other than String into keySet and operate on the elements as though they are String, which is not the correct message to convey.
    I wonder why Properties doesn't extend Hashtable<String,String> ... but there's probably a reason and given that it extends Hashtable<Object, Object> instead, is there no way to assign the return value of Properties.keySet() to a Set<String> by using some Java generic notation/syntax?
    I know this would work as well, but that's just discarding the generic information in the first place
    Set<String> keySet = (Set<String>)(Set)props.keySet();
    I suppose going back to the iterator is the only way to basically copy props.keySet() into a Set<String>?

  • Editing station

    Hi guys I have a bit of a question. In work we need to setup 5 edit stations (all fcp) and I have been asked to do this. The function is to capture footage from a tv feed, edit it and export it quickly. So the question is this.
    1. How do I get all stations to share the same hard drive or caputred footage (it needs to be quick access)
    2. Can I capture footage onto FCP while editing on the same system?
    3. If money was no object what would be your setup for 5 edit stations?
    Regards

    Money better be no object, because it will be expensive.
    First you need shared storage. An XServe Raid, or Huge Systems array, some other shared fibrechannel storage. Next you will need a SAN that will allow all the machines to access that shared storage. SANmp, Meta SAN or XSAN are a few options. All the machines will not only need to have fibrechannel cards, but SAN hardware as well. At least one machine will need a capture card...but for the ability to capture and then immediately begin editing look to PictureReady! at www.pictureready.com. This is what is used when the BBC edits the Tour de France and Wimbleton highlights. You start capturing and within a few seconds you can start editing.
    What you need to do is fine a full service company that sells and sets up FCP networks. If you were in LA I could tell you were to go, but seeing as you are over the pond, I really can't.

  • I want to add a Saved Mailbox, but I do not have an Edit button for Mailboxes?  Is there a setting that causes the Edit button to display?

    The user manual says to go Mailboxes and click the Edit button to add a Mailbox, but I do not have an Edit button displayed in Mailboxes.  Is there a setting for displaying the Edit Button?  I have the latest version of iPad (Model MD328LL).  Thanks.

    If you go to your email account in the Mail app and look at the window where your inbox, trash folder and sent folder are - if there is an Edit button at the top of the window - tap that and then tap Add Mailbox at the bottom.
    If the Edit button is not there - you cannot create folders on the iPad. Your email account is not IMAP. Only IMAP email accounts can create folders on the iPad. Any folders that you would already have in an IMAP account would sync to the device as well.

  • How to set the field non-editable in the classical report..

    Hi..
              How to set the field non-editable in the classical report..

    Hi experts,
    For the component 'ICCMP_EMP_SRCH' there is a view 'BUPAEMPSEARCH' , which has 2 context nodes 'CUSTOMER' AND 'SEARCHEMPLOYEE' , i need to add the field 'NICKNAME' which is part of the 'CUSTOMER' context node on the search screen. Currrently all the fields on the screen screen are from the 'SEARCHEMPLOYEE' context node. when i did the configuration , the 'NICKNAME' field is greyed out . I have already generated the Getter ,Setter , GET_I, GET_M methods for the 'NICKNAME' field and the context node and controller class and context class are all active .
    on debugging the GET_I method, i see that rv_disabled = 'TRUE' and the current = collection_wrapper->get_current( ) is returning empty value .
    for this rv_disabled to be set false , the code below is not triggered since there is no value in current.
    IF current->is_property_readonly(
    'NICKNAME' ) = abap_false. "#EC NOTEXT
    rv_disabled = 'FALSE'.
    ENDIF.
    when i check for other search fields of context node 'SEARCHEMPLOYEE' , all the fields are set to rv_disabled = 'FALSE'.
    can anyone suggest how to approch this. iam i missing any binding between context nodes or any activations ?
    The field properties are set as Input field and the display checkbox is not checked.

  • Unable to set up video for editing

    I am a novice and am using the trial version of Premiere Elements 8.  I have gone through the Using Adobe Premiere Elements 8 product support quite a few times over the past several days and am not able to figure out how to set up videos for editing.
    When I am in Elements Organizer, the various files on my hard drive show on the left.  Two video files converted to MPEG show in a middle column.  I can play them by double clicking on them.  However, I am totally lost on how to set them up so that I can edit them (cutting into clips, improving lighting, etc).  Would someone please let me know either how to set up my videos for editing or let me know where there are help discussions or tutorials.
    Thanks for any help.
    Steve Gillings

    Steve,
    You are in the Elements Organizer, which more like a catalog manager and not a video editor.
    One of the ways to start editing is as mentioned by John in the post above.
    The other way is to launch Adobe Premiere Elements directly which can be done simply by clicking the desktop icon and selecting new project option
    OR you can run the AdobePremiereElements.exe from your install location.
    I see that you have installed the tryout version for Elements 8, that is last year's version, Elements 9 is already out, its better that you try the latest version. A lot of us on the forum have started using it.
    cheers.

    What IP address does the TC have and what IP does the computer have?
    We need more info as we really have no idea what your network looks like.
    Modem router, model, type of broadband?
    TC setup as bridge or router?
    Is the computer getting internet via the TC?
    Are you using wireless or ethernet?
    Have you set IPv6 correctly to local link in the computer on whichever network client is doing the connection?
    Did this work the first time for backup and has now failed? If so simply reboot the TC. It is a constant bug that the TC is lost to the network.

  • Suggestions for upgrading 3 Mac Pro FCP edit stations

    I want to upgrade our three Mac Pro (Power PC) FCP5 edit stations. Our Mac Pro G5s currently access a Xraid/Xserve/Xsan fiber network. There seems to be plenty of speculation out there that Apple is discontuing the Mac Pro line and FCP X is not compatible with our exisitng projects - which number in the hundreds. So, I might be leaning toward new high-end iMacs using FCP7 but I'm not sure how to network them and share FCP projects. Any suggestions on where to go from here are appreciated. Thanks.

    *** Fibre Channel
    Probably the most important thing that you'll be losing on an iMac is the Fibre Channel connection; however, Promise Technologies has their SANLink - Fibre Channel adapter using Thunderbolt Technology (I don't know if it's actually shipping yet),
    Here's the product link:
    http://www.promise.com/storage/raid_series.aspx?region=en-global&m=192&rsn1=40&r sn3=49
    The upside here is that if this adapter works as expected, you could use any Mac with Thunderbolt (all the current models have it).  Even though the Mac mini is the least powerful of the Apple line, it's a huge performace leap over a PowerMac G5 and the Mac mini supports both a computer display via its Thunderbolt/Display PortMini and a HDMI TV via its HDMI out.  This takes perfect advantage of FCP Digital Cinema Desktop modes.
    *** Which version of FCP do you own?
    Another issue is going to be your FCP software installers (which I'm sure you're already aware of).  Your PowerMac G5s must be running Final Cut Pro 6 or older as 6 was the last version to run on a PowerPC.  And Final Cut Pro 5 was the first version that could be installed on an Intel based Mac.
    In theory, FCP5, 6 or 7 will run on an intel Mac, however, the current Mac OS and support for it is probably going to be your biggest issue for everything that curently works as expected on your G5s.
    The upgrade from FCP 5 to 6 or 7 is as easy as it gets other than having to order Final Cut Pro Studio 3 directly from Apple (last I read, they're still selling it if you call them with the part number and you say you need it for exisiting projects).
    *** Do you use 3rd party capture cards like the Blackmagic-Designs Decklink?  Blackmagic makes a Thunderbolt replacement which should work fine on its own, but will need to be carefully tested with the Fibre Channel adapter.
    Be ready to be on the phone with tech support, checking user forums, and make sure you can take anything that you're purchased back.

  • OOP ALV - Setting specific records as editable

    Hello everyone,
    Is there a way for an ALV grid/OOP ALV to set certain fields as editable?
    I have tried setting specific columns as editable through field catalog setup, but I don't need all records of that column to be editable. I just need specific records to be editable. Is this possible with ALV or I have no other choice but to use Table Control?

  • How to set Time capsule as base station and airport express to join

    I have a wireless network using an Airport express. Now I would like to have time capsule to be set up as the base station and just the airport express to join this network, in order to listen wirelessly to music, but keep the speed of the time capsule.
    Right now, the ethernet cable is connected to the Airport express. Do I have to switch that to the Time capsule? I tried to do that, but it wasn't able to connect to the internet in this case.... I am lost. Now I have a speedy time capsule, but have the network running on the slow Airport express... Please help!!! And I believe as you guessed already, I am not a smarty, when it comes to networks.
    HELP! Please!!

    I actually have mine set up this way that you are looking to do. Works well for me. here si what you can try:
    Make sure you unplug the Express all together first. It does interfere when trying to set this up. Next setup your TC just like the instruction says (remember no Express). You should just be able to set up your TC, connect to the internet and get going like any other router or like the Airport Extreme. if you set up your TC with your comp and CANNOT access the internet that is your first problem. My suggestion: do a hard reset of the TC if you have already attached it to the Express while also doing a hard reset of the Express - this is to bring them both back to afctory defaults to start fresh. This definitaely helped me.
    So once you have your TC up and running and you have internet access thru your TC, you are halfway there. Make sure your TC shows in the left column of the Airport Utility (and dont forget to install the Airport Utility from the disc that comes with teh TC before you do any of this, forgot that). if it shows up in the left column you should also be able to see the Express in that column, both with green lights, if you have set this up correctly. Then plug in the Express. As the above mentioned remember t make sure it is connected to the correct port on that back of the TC. It will remain amber then blink a few times. This is normal. It should be blinking amber when you attempt the setup of the Express. Your airport utility shoul dnow see the addt base station (Express) in the left column. When you click on it and click CONTINUE it will ask you if you want to switch networks. You can do that and lick switch provided you are already connected to the TC and alrady have an internet connection. Once you click switch the TC will disappear from the left column and you will be left only with the Express. This is OK. I am not in fron to fm y comp right now so I am doing this from memory but in setting up the Express you want to add it to your existing network. You will have to choose which network to add it to in a drop down box in one of those steps - just make sure you add it to the one that you named your TC. Then click to the finish and click UPDATE. Let it finish the update - you shoul dsee green light son both the TC and Extreme HARDWARE - not necessarily in the airport utility. Also it is a good idea to to to the menu bar on top where the WiFi icon is and manually select your network in case you get bumped off while the TC is updating itself after you ckicl update - this happened ot me and it wouldnt complete the update and took me forever to figure out it needs internet connection to complete the update screen.
    next make sure you RESTART your comp. This I guess will make all changes basically go into effect as you cycle it up. When you are up and running you should see your WiFi connect as your TC and NOT your Express. Also go back into airport utility and see if you ahve both items listed in left column - they too should have a greenlight. If they do you should be set.
    I did this because I wanted to steam my iTunes files that I have on my TC to stream to iTunes via my network. The Express part, as you know, is what allows the streaming. So make sure you plug your stereo cable into the Express audio port. Then go to iTunes and on the bottom you will notice a new little drop down box - make sure to select Express so it can wireless stream (in iTunes prefs there is a pref you must turn on also to allow iTunes to see remote speakers.
    Ive simplified this a little since I am not at home but this is the gist. In a prefect worl you should be able to easily have this work. I did so I know it does at least work if not anything else. You just have to make sure you get the steps correct and have everyhing plugge din where they should be...
    G'luck
