Setting up a Scanner

I have two All-In-One Machines on two different wireless networks and had no problem setting up the printers. But, being very new to the Mac (one week), I have no idea how to set up the scanners in them. I used the help function and it said I can either see the scanner (I can't) or set it up like I did the printer. This is not helpful to me as I still can't figure it out.
I have downloaded the printer, scan and the fax software for my Canon 8350 Cdn, but I really don't know what to do to set up the scanner. Any ideas of what I am missing?
I am guessing it is simple, but being so new to the mac I don't know what to do.
I am using the Canon 8350 through the time machine and connected by cat 5 cable, but, no problems with printing at all, just don't know how to set up the scanner.
The other is an HP M2727 through a linksys wireless connected by cat 5 cable.

With regards to the Canon MF8350Cdn, the Canon web site shows that you need to have the application ScanGear v1.20 installed. This will allow you to use Image Capture, which is built in to Mac OS X 10.6, to scan from the document feeder or platen glass. This is not included with 10.6 so you will have to download it if you have not done so already.
With the ScanGear v1.20 installed, the next step would be to add the scanner part of the MF8350. If the device was USB, this is done by opening Print & Fax, clicking + to add a printer and selecting the MF entry that displays as a scanner in the Default view. In the case of a networked MF, I am not sure how you would add this as a scanner. It is possible that it advertises itself on your network as a Bonjour Scanner, in which case it would also appear in the Default browser view. If you don't see it then let me know and I can check with my MF4380dn at work.
Once the scanner has been added to Print & Fax, I would expect that you then have to set the AIO to the scanner mode. With my MF4380dn, which uses the same version of ScanGear as your MF8350, to scan from the copier I have to place the document in the feeder or on the glass and then press the Scan button. This shows Network Scan on the display. If I wanted to scan via USB (which is usually how I have it configured) I have to press the Scan button again so that USB Scan is displayed. I would expect that your MF8350 has a similar function and that you would need to select Network Scan.
With Network Scan set in the MF8350, you can then open Image Capture and you should have the copier showing as one of the devices in the list. You should then be able to select it and then press the Scan button within the application.
I have also noticed that the ScanGear v1.20 adds an application called MF ScanGear. This looks like a similar application to the one the inkjets use and lets you pre-configure actions in response to certain selections, such as scan to file or scan to email. I haven't actually used this application since installing ScanGear (I mainly scan from my MP980 or LiDE 200) so I will have to get back to you about how it all works.
Hope this is enough information for you to get started for now. I will get back to you tomorrow after I get a chance to check the network side of scanning with the MF series.

    Hi Jehday14,
Please complete the following steps to enable scanning over a network:
    Specifying Your Scanner or Printer
From the Go menu of Finder, select Applications, then double-click the Canon Utilities folder, IJ Network Scanner Selector EX folder, then Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector EX icon.  The Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector EX appears in the menu bar, and the Scan-from-PC Settings screen appears.
Select your scanner or printer from Scanners.  Select the Bonjour service name set to your scanner or printer. When Bonjour is disabled, the MAC address of your scanner or printer appears.
    Click OK.
Setting for Scanning with IJ Scan Utility
Please follow the steps below to set the printer for scanning using the IJ Scan Utility:
    Start the IJ Scan Utility.
Select "Canon XXX series Network" (where "XXX" is the model name) for Product Name.
Click Settings... to use another scanner connected to a network.
Click (General Settings), then click Select in Product Name.
The Scan-from-PC Settings screen of IJ Network Scanner Selector EX appears.  Select the scanner you want to use and click OK.
In the Settings (General Settings) dialog, click OK.  The IJ Scan Utility main screen reappears.  You should now be able to scan wirelessly.
    Hope this helps!

    Hello Shazoreilly,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you would like to set up a scanner. The following article on adding or removing a printer should be of assistance. While it refers to printers, it is also applicable to scanners. Specifically see the section on adding a Wi-Fi printer.

I connected my Canon printer to time capsule, and can print OK. However, I can't get the printer scanner to work. How do you set up the scanner with Time Capsule?

You cannot use USB. It has to be a network capable printer.. is it?? You did not indicate how it is connected.. but by wireless or ethernet then scanning is possible otherwise not.

  • Setting permissions for scanner use

    Hello,
My USB scanner is a Canon Lide 35 and it had been working perfectly in arch. After  a recent update (don't know exactly which because do not use scanner so often), the device is detected and device is set in /dev/bus/usb/005/00x. The problem is that the permissions are not set correctly, I assume by udev?, and my normal user cannot use the scanner because the device remains as owned by root.root and not 0664, group=scanner, as specified in the sane udev rules (/etc/udev/rules.d/53-sane.rules). The rules file is with the new syntax, i.e., ATTRS instead of SYSFS and so forth. My user belongs to the "scanner" group. I have the feeling it is something related with the udev rules but Im not sure what. Here is the relevant line:
    # Canon CanoScan LiDE 35 | Canon CanoScan LiDE 40 | Canon CanoScan LiDE 50
    ATTRS{idVendor}=="04a9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2213", MODE="0664", GROUP="scanner", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"
The latest update where kernel stuff and udev stuff were updated resulted in:
    kernel-headers-2.6.24.3-1  udev-119-1...
    Any help greatly appreciated,
    Regards,
    Felipe.

It appears that udev has problems with rules matching by idVendor when system is up and running but everything is ok if device was online during boot. Please check out this bug http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9935 and comments. If You have the same problem then please vote for this bug and/or post a comment.

  • Setting up epson scanner

a new epson v600 scanner will not communicate with my iMac running OS X 10.8 - get the blinking yellow error light.  Epson says the scanner is fine.  I have updated all Apple software, incl. Epson drivers.
    Any ideas?

Sorry; it's supposed to mean that the scanner can't communicate with the computer, or has other internal issues; this is the second V600 scanner that was set up with this iMac to have the same result, so it's not the scanner.

  • Setting up the scanner

I have the following HP product: Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 200 colorMFP M276nw
I was able to use both the print and the scan features with my last computer, an older MacBook Pro. I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.5) and now only the print feature is available. What do I need to do to make the scan feature available?

    Hi @katew60 ,
I see that you are having issues with scanning on the 10.9. I would like to help you.
Did you download and install the newest drivers for 10.9?
HP LaserJet Pro 200 Color M276 Full Software Solution - OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
Check the driver name that is installed for the printer. Make sure it shows just the printer's name.
Click the Apple menu and then click System Preferences. Click Printers & Scanners, highlight the printer name on the left side and on the right side of the screen it should show the printer's name. (Officejet 6500)
If the full printer name isn't listed correctly, delete it and add the printer name back in from the list. Click the - sign to delete the driver and then click the + sign to add the driver, might have to click the drop down to select the printer's name to add it in.
On the Printers and Scanners window, highlight the printer on the left side, on the right side of the window you should have a Print/Scan tab, click on Scan, then Open Scanners and test the scanning.
Please provide the following information so I can assist you better if you are still having issues.
Did you have the Scan tab?
    Were you able to scan?
How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet/Wireless)
    Have a nice day!

  • Is it possible to set up a HP Scanjet 8200 series (8290 with ADF) Intel Mac

Is it possible to set up a HP Scanjet 8200 series (8290 with automatic document feeder) on the new Intel based Mac Pro desktop computer (nehalem 2.93 dual processors, 8 core)? Can anyone please steer me in the right direction -- I tried one of the drivers from the HP website and the install reflected that it does not work on intel based computers. Does OS X Leopard come with some type of utility to help me set up the scanner (I don't see where to set it up)? Thanks.

  • Scanner sharing not possible

I have two scanners (Canon Canoscan 3200 F, Lexmark X1190) connected to a PowerMac G4 (Mac OS X 10.4.11) via Firewire (the Canon) and USB (the Lexmark). In Image Capture I set up to share both the scanners. They appear on my MacBook Pro which is connected to my local network. But Image Capture tells me that they are not connected although both devices uses TWAIN drivers which are installed on my MacBook Pro, too. How can I scan over the network? All sources on the internet claim setting up the scanner sharing feature is very easy. It is - but it doesn't work.
    Steffen

Oh right, that possibility. Digital Cameras which mount as a disk image when you tether them to the Mac can be shared. Not all Digital Cameras offer that ability. I forget which ones offered that capability, though I wouldn't be surprised if this list includes some of them, since it mentions use of Image Capture with Digital Cameras:

  • Adding IR c5045 document scanner to Mt. Lion?

Currently trying to scan to a document scanner via LAN in a k-12 environment. I do have print capabilities but
the scanner does not show up. My Macbook is not enrolled with Active Directory. Rather, I am talking to the Printer / Scanner
by the IP address. Would anyone have suggestions on how I can set up the scanner portion of this? Thanks.

    With SMB not being a supported service for the iR devices, it is still possible to scan to the Mac using the FTP protocol. However the FTP service is not a user selectable option in the System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing pane of 10.8 and 10.7. So to enable FTP you can open Terminal and type;
    sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
Then press Return. You then need to enter your admin password and press Return again.
    With FTP enabled on the Mac, you can then create an address book entry in the iR using the following;
    Protocol: FTP
    Hostname: IP address of Mac
File Path: path to folder from Home folder
User Name: Full user name of the account owner of the destination folder
Password: Password for the account above
    An example of the iR address book configuration to a Mac with an IP address of 172.17.4.33 and a user of Paul and a folder called Scans located on his Desktop would be;
    Protocol: FTP
    Hostname: 172.17.4.33
    File Path: Desktop/Scans
    User name: Paul
    Password: password

  • Scanner on solaris HELP!!!!

I am running Solaris 10 6/06 and have installed the companion cd as well as someother things (Quake II, QEMU for example). I am trying to set up a USB HP office Jet 5500 all-in-one series. I set it up as a printer but i cant set up the scanner functions. I run the following commands and get the following output:
    # /opt/sfw/bin/sane-find-scanner

    # you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
As you can see SANE can find the scanner from 'sane-find-scanner' but does not recognize it with 'scanimage -L'. I would greatly appriate any assistance and thank you for reading this.

It seems that you didn't set all the environment variables correctly. Check if the following variables are set correctly:

Though I would simply wrap some Reader around System.in and simply read the first char, flushing the stream afterwards.
