Setting up a second wireless network with TC

Hi All
Am shiny new to these communities and a recent convert from PC/Windows to MAC/OS and have so far been loving a simple, easy to use home computer life!
I've scoured through to see if i could find an answer to my question but couldn’t see anything so my apologies if I’ve missed it and it has been answered before.
As part of our upgrade to MAC I also invested in a TC to enable us to make use of Time Machine and securely back up pictures and videos etc. it's been working like a dream and have had no problems. but now i want to get a bit clever.....i think

My current home set up is as follows:
BB is provided via cable so the router and modem are required to sit by the TV giving me some issues in getting a clear wifi signal in those far to reach corners of the house. To overcome the occasional signal interruption I have used Power line Network Adaptors throughout the house.
Downstairs
Cable Modem/Router - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Media streamer - Plugged directly into Router
Office
Mac mini - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Airprint Printer - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Windows Laptop - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Upstairs
WD my Book Live - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Media Streamer - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
TC - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Currently the WD NAS holds our media content for streaming to the media streamers downstairs and in the bedroom. While i could use the WD NAS to hold my Time Machine backups I was worried about available space and i didn’t want to put everything into one place in case the worst happens and it's ever stolen etc. So i elected to get a TC as a second NAS drive purely for time machine backups which then meant our family pics etc were safe and in the event of us ever getting broken in to its unlikely any would-be burglar would find both NAS's, if either.
But here in lays my issue.
My wireless range upstairs is fairly weak and i wanted to use the TC to "extend" my current wireless network upstairs. meaning iPads, iPhones etc will still get the benefit of a good signal and printing can still be down via airport etc.
I've tried to set it up via Time Machine that the wireless is turned on but the back ups are done over Ethernet (for obvious speed reasons) but for some reason i can’t seem to have the TC doing both. If i have it plugged in to the Power line Network adaptor but set it up with wireless enabled i don’t get any better wireless signal upstairs. But the backup still seems to be going over the Ethernet Power line Network adaptors.
What am i not doing? Or is what i want to achieve not possible?
Apologies for the novel and i hope I’ve explained my set up correctly for someone to point me in the right direction?

I have a similar issue I guess.
I have the DSL(or cable modem, tried both) connected to the TC. The TC then shares the Internet wirelessly on the first and second floor(since the iMac is on the first, right next to the TC that is not a problem).
I want to get reliable network connectivity to the third floor so i have connected the TC to a Powerline adapter on the first floor and the second powerline on the third floor is connected to an Airport Express to extend the network up there.
However, the only way i could get it to work was to bridge with the AE on 3rd which creates a new network. It works great, as long as the devices are in the room from the startup of the network. If say i take the iphone or laptop down to 2nd or 1st floor and they access the wireless network from the TC with no problem, when I return them to the 3rd floor, they see the 3rd floor network but I cannot get them assigned an IP address and they are stuck wth a self-assigned IP until I go back down to the first floor and unplug/replug the powerline there.
Ideally, I'd like it to be one network so there is no switch over, and therefore no need to reset, alternatively, I need some sort of solution to let the devices get a new IP address when they return to the third floor.
Baffled.

I have an existing modem/router from my ISP that does DHCP and NAT with base IP 192.168.1.1 distributed in the wireless network. I use this wireless network for our private devices. I could turn off the DHCP server in this first router, but there isn't a separate setting to turn off NAT.
I want to connect my Airport Extreme (4th gen) to this existing router to create a separate wireless network for visiting guests, where IP addresses of 10.0.0.0 etc. are used. So I do not want to use the Airport Extreme in bridge mode, as I would like to keep the devices on the first network 'invisible' for those on the second network. (P.S. when connected in bridge mode, the Airport works well and can distribute a network with a different name from the first. It's just that I would feel more comfortable about our privacy if the Airport were to distribute a different IP range. False security, maybe?)
I've tried doing this by 'Sharing a public IP address' in Airport Utility's Internet tab, leaving TCP/IP's setting to 'via DHCP', setting DHCP addresses to start with 10.0.0.2 up to 200 with all else blank, and not using a standard host nor NAT-PMP in the NAT tab.
When I do this the Airport complains of a 'double NAT issue'. Internet connectivity seems to be OK, but when switching between the two networks on my Mac I get complaints about my IP address being in use by another device intermittently.
Can anyone help in how to get the 'double NAT issue' resolved?

So if someone is connected to the modem/router network they will be able to see the HD I will have put in to the AirPort Extreme?
As I said above.....since the modem/router and AirPort are bridged, devices on the modem/router wireless will be able to "see" devices on the AirPort wireless, and vice versa.....

Yes, unless you plan to password protect the drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.

The modem/router and AirPort Extreme are bridged. They are on the same network. All devices are on the same network when the modem/router and AirPort are bridged. Not sure how else that I can say this.
Also, because it is bridged, I shouldn't have any problems accessing the HD I will have connected to the AirPort Extreme from an external location?
Accessing devices from a remote location is never easy....and a topic for a different post/discussion. If you have a "static" Internet IP address from your provider, and have all the details on how to forward ports on your modem/router, you are off to a good start.
Apparently there is some addressing issues because devices can be seen as "Double IP" because the modem/router would have allocated IP's as well as the AirPort allocating IP's thus making connections slower until resolved
When you "bridge", all IP addresses are issued by one device. There will be no conflicts on the network, since they are bridged.
Once again, in very simple terms, you have two doors (access points) that open into the same room (network). One "door" is the modem/router and the other "door" is the AirPort Extreme. They are on the same network....("room") because they are bridged.

I just signed up for Comcast High Speed Internet. I was able to get my Power Mac onto the internet. However, I connected my Airport Extreme and am unable to get it to recognize that I have an internet connection. I want to set up a wireless network in my apartment. Comcast tech support said that I only have one IP address.
Any suggestions as to how I can get my wireless network up and going? Thanks!

Should I change set up so that cable goes from the cable modem directly to Airport Extreme and then use the ports on the Extreme to run Ethernet Cable to Power Mac and other devices?

Extending wireless network with an aiport express

I have a netgear wireless router set up in my house on the second floor, but my room being located on the first floor i get a poor signal so i bought an airport express to extend my network. i tried going through the aiport exress setup assistant but that wouldnt work, so i ended up hooking it to my netgear router on the second floor to set it up in airport admin utility and then brought it back down to the first floor. my itunes worked with the speakers for about.. ten seconds then stopped. and my signal is just as weak as before.. any suggestions?

Unfortunately, it is simply not possible to use an Airport Express to wirelessly "extend" the wireless range of any model of Netgear wireless router. Netgear's wireless routers do not support Apple's implementation of a wireless distribution system (WDS), which is a necessary requirement for setting up an extended wireless network with the Airport Express. And no - it doesn't work the other way around either (Airport Express as base station, Netgear wireless router to "extend").
It sounds like you did successfully configure your Airport Express to "join" your existing wireless network - which will allow you to print and stream iTunes to the Airport Express. The problems you are having with Airtunes "hanging" on your Mac are almost certainly due to the poor wireless signal quality problem that you are already aware of.

Your AirPort Express is already providing two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but each band is using the same wireless network name.
This is the default setup for the AirPort Express, which is recommended for most users. The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Express.
It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" devices at that network to connect. Some users swear by this option.....(I am not one of them).... but you might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Express
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options near the bottom of the next window
Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name.....which will automatically add "5 GHz" to the network name....so you can identify it
Click Save, then click Update and wait a full minute for the Express to restart
Now you will need to "point" your 5 GHz capable devices at the 5 GHz network name. 2.4 GHz devices will connect to your "other" network name.

I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless network with Airport Express. Everything is fine until I try to select Extend the wireless network. I select Extend Wireless network but have no success. Ideas?

I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless to rooms with a weak signal. The internet connection is fine with the basic setup. As soon as I go into Airport Utility to select Extend Wireless Network and fill in what I believe is proper information, I get an error message that Airport Extreme no longer has an IP address, the internet connection is broken, and under Wireless, that there is a wireless network in existence that can't be found. Rebooting the modem only brings the Airport Extreme back to the starting gate so that the internet is once again available. I assumed (naively) that with the All Mac All-the-Time context, adding Airport Express would truly be Plug and Play. I got the plug, but no play. I asked a Comcast technical specialist about it and he said that I needed to reset the Airport Express settings back to their default, factory status. I looked that process up online and found out that the way to do that was to hold down the reset button, then plug Airport Express into the socket and wait for the green light to flash four times. Then wait 45 seconds and the default settings will return. I did all that, only to find out that after the initial flash of green, green never appeared again. I got a fast flashing yellow light, followed by the light going off. Apparently this didn't reset it properly. So, after hours trying to get this system to work, I appeal to someone who can see through this mess and provide the key to success!

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
Correct?

I am unable to join my existing wireless network with new AirPort Express

I am unable to join my existing wireless network with new AirPort Express.
I am using a DLink DI-524 Router, Windows 7 (64), and the AirPort Express.
AirPort Utility will not recognize the AEX wirelessly, it will only recognize it when it is connected by Ethernet. I can then configure the AEX and verify that the settings stick once disconnected and then reconnected. However, even after that, it will not recognize the AEX once disconnected from the Ethernet cable.
I followed the suggestions of several other threads on these forums. But I am unable to get the AEX to work.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

It's almost always a security setting that causes problems when the Airport Express (AX) tries to join a third party wireless network. The AX usually does not "join" correctly and that's why you can't see it on your wireless network using AirPort Utility.
Using an ethernet cable is still the more reliable way to configure and adjust the AX, but if you are want to try to configure it using wireless, you must return the AX back to factory defaults as follows:
Power down the AX
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
When it is set to factory defaults, the AX broadcasts a wireless signal with a network name like "apple network xxxxxx" where the "x's" are either letters or numbers. You must look for this network by clicking on the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of the screen. If you don't see this network, then click Join Other Network to search that way. Unless you connect to this network, you will not be able to configure the AX using wireless.
Do you know the exact security type that your D-Link router is using? That is the key element in the process.
Open AirPort utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab to establish a name for the AX, device password and adjust time zone settings
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode....Join a wireless network
Wireless Network Name...must exactly match your D-Link wireless network name
Enable ethernet clients if you want the port to be active (your D-Link must be compatible with ProxySTA for this to work)
Wireless Security...exact setting of the D-Link network. WEP security causes a lot of issues. Try to use WPA/WPA2 Personal, which is far more secure.
Wireless Password...must match the D-Link network
Click the Music icon to enable AirTunes
Click Update to save settings

How can i extend an existing wifi verizon wireless network with time capsule? the router is connected on the bottom floor. want to boost the signal to a home office on the top floor, four flights up. connect time capsule via ethernet cable to iMac on 4th floor? It all depends on what you mean by "extend".
If you plan to "extend" by connecting the Time Capsule to the Verizon router using a wired Ethernet cable, this can be accomplished.
If you were hoping to connect the Time Capsule to the Verizon router using wireless only, unfortunately the Time Capsule and Verizon products are not compatible for that purpose.
Check with Verizon to see if they offer an "extender" or "repeater" that could be located very close to the Time Capsule.
This would provide both more wireless coverage and also allow you to connect the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable from the "extender" or "repeater".

Network diagnostics asks for password for wireless network with no security

I am trying to connect my Mac Pro to a wireless network which has no security settings. Other Macs in the house connect to the network with no problem, but the Mac Pro doesn't. I am setting up a new network as I have moved house. In the previous house the wireless worked fine on the Mac Pro.
When I click on the Airport Icon in the menu bar, the search wheel shows and it finds the network, but when I click on the name of the network typically it doesn't connect. Occasionally it does connect, and I briefly have internet access, but then the number of bars on the Airport Icon gradually reduce and then I can't connect again.
When I run Network Diagnostics from Safari, it finds the network also, but then typically asks for a WEP password for the Wireless Network when I haven't added any security to the network (occasionally it doesn't ask for a password and I can connect briefly)
I have tried resetting my Time Capsule and creating a new wireless network with a different name, but still experience the same issues.
I wonder if someone has any ideas as to what might be going on, and how I might be able to troubleshoot this.

It is one of mine. Yes. It connects to it no problem, just doesn't connect to the actual internet. Network diagnostics has all green lights until the ISP and/or Internet point. If I walk through diagnostics, it will get to the point where it says that the network requires a WEP password. I don't know why it does that because my network is not password-protected (husband claims it doesn't work well with his VPN system to get into work network). If I leave it blank, the connection will work. Eventually, after the computer is put to sleep, I will have the same problem upon waking up. I just tried renaming the network and removing all preferred networks and rebooting. Let's see how that works.

Creating a seamless wireless network with 2 AExpress units

I have 2 Airport Express units in different parts of my house. I have struggled for YEARS trying to get them to create one seamless wireless network with the same name that I could float between. I have never been able to get that to work. anyone?
I know that some of the problems MAY have to do with the non-apple router settings, but I just have never gotten a clear response form anyone about weather it is doable, and/or worth doing. I would settle for 2 seperate wireless networks that didn't compete with each other and/or constantly need re-booting to stay active. I am generally the most tech savvy person I know and am consulted on IT by friends and colleageus regularly, but I just cannot figure this one out..
I am totally capable of setting this up, both in the router and the AE units, if someone can just tell me that;
1) yes it is possible and it will work, and
2) just set it up like this...

Thanks for the clarification. Check your AirPort Express devices one at a time, but other than different device names to avoid confusion.....AirPort Express 1, AirPort Express 2....for example, the settings should look this:
Open AirPort Utility , select one AirPort Express, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below th row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Your choice
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible) a good choice, but you can choose other combinations by holding down the option key on your Mac while you click on the selection box
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal an excellent choice if all of your devices are compatible with this setting
Wireless Password = Your wireless password
Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings
Configure AirPort Express 2 exactly the same way and Update to save settings
Then, power down the entire network.....all devices....order is not important
Wait a moment, then start the modem/router first and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Start each AirPort Express the same way
Start each other network device one at a time about a minute apart
Check for proper network operation
IF....you did not have your AirPort Express devices in Bridge Mode before.....that is the reason why you are having issues now and also is the reason why the "roaming" network was not working.....assuming that there was a reasonable overlap in wireless coverage between the 2 Express devices, of course.
If you want to try the "roaming" setup again, assign the exact same wireless network name, security and password to both Express devices and confirm again that both are setup in Bridge Mode as the very last step before you click the Update button in AirPort Utility.
Power down the entire network and start up in sequence as well as in the example above.

How do I set up a desktop/laptop network with a WRT54G v5

I'm a novice when it comes ot networking, but I was hoping someone could guide me as to how to set up a wireless network with a laptop (non-linksys wireless card) and a desktop with a WRT54G. I've already got it where the laptop can connect to the internet via the WRT54G but I'd like to set-up a wireless network where the laptop can view and/or modify files on the desktop and vice-versa. Can aanyone help me? (I'd also like to add my external hard drive to the network I create via ethernet connection to the 54G, later on)
Can anyone give me a guide or even tell me if it's possible?

Extending an existing wireless network with an airport express

My wireless signal is quite weak in my room so I'm looking for a way to extend the range of the network by using an airport express. I understand i can't do this wirelessly but is it possible to run an ethernet cable from my existing router to the airport express in my room and then have a stronger signal in my room?

If you connect an ethernet cable from your existing router to the AirPort Express, and then configure the Express to "Create a wireless network" with the same name, security settings and password, this will in effect, extend your current wireless network.
The Express must be configured as a "bridge" to operate correctly on your network when you do this, meaning that the setting for Connection Sharing on the Express will be set to "Off (Bridge Mode).

Replace the Time Capsule with one that has a larger hard drive. Or erase the one you have and start a new set of backups or backup one of the computers to a different backup drive.

By creating wireless network with Airport Express, original wireless network stops functioning

I want to use the Airport Express to create a second wireless network downstairs. Upstairs I already have a wireless modem/router (Draytek 2850). The signal downstairs however is to weak. When I create the wireless network on the Airport Express, this works perfectly. However after the creation, the wireless part of the Draytek modem/router stops functioning. The wired part keeps working, but when I connect to the wireless part I access anything. Why is that?
The Express is set to Bridge modus and under TCP/IP I've selected that the IPV4 configurations has to go via DHCP.

I set the Network Name the same as the SSID, security type on the router is Mixed(WPA/WPA2)/PSK, which on the AX is WPA/WPA2 - personal I guess. The password is the same as the DrayTek.
Yes, WPA/WPA2 Personal on the AX is the same as the Draytek's wireless security option.
The radio channel of the Draytek router is 6, the channel of the AX is 11. Do I miss anything here?
No, it looks like you have all of the right settings as far as I can tell ... and you already stated that the AX is in bridge mode, i.e., Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode) ... correct?
If so, I would recommend performing a complete power recycle of your networking components, as follows:
Power-down the DrayTek, and AX. Order is not critical.
Power-up the DrayTek; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it to stablize.
Before powering-up the AX, verify that you can gain Internet access via a wireless connection to the DrayTek. If so, continue.
Power-up (plug-in) the AX; wait at least 5-10 minutes to allow it to stablize. It should have a steady green status light. If not, use the AirPort Utility to determine the reasons why it doesn't from the Status page of the Utility.
