Setting up a Server for Small Network

I have a workgroup of 3 people all on macs running OS X. I have a PowerMac Quad and I want to set it up as a server so that my entire workgroup can access files from it in order to run InDesign and InCopy. How do I do this?
Thanks in advance!

OK, so I guess that I had already figured out that this is your first network. Let's have some fun...
But in your your first post, you stated:
I have a PowerMac Quad and I want to set it up as a server so that my entire workgroup can access files from it in...
And no, 'server' won't be a separate user on the Quad. The Quad is the server, right?
Quad=Computer=server.
You are configuring the Quad with several new accounts.

Find this in SystemPreferences>Accounts. Unlock. Click the little Plus sign to add users.
I would suggest setting the Quad with a static IP address inside your little LAN (local area network). You can find the steps by searching this group for 'static ip', or looking into systempreferences>Network>Built-In...
You should really read up on some of these network basics (like finding IP address...)
Don't apologize for your ignorance. Ignorance can be cured, but you'll need more than a hand-holding here in the Discussions.
I will help, but show us that you're willing to help, too.
Stop back when you've learned how to:
a) find your IP address,
b)set the Quad with a static IP,
c)search the Discussions

  • Is it possible by using boot camp to set up a high spec mac pro to operate as a pc server for a network of approx 20 pcs

My company has recently bought a high end mac pro to act as a mac server. However it is no longer need but business does need a new server for a network of about 20 pcs. Is it possible or practical using boot camp to tuen the mac into a fully funtioning pc server?
    jb

Thanks for the info. I don't have Server 2008 but the Boot Camp documentation says Windows 7 only is supported. Glad you jumped in knowing that Server 2008 is supported.
In the original poster's post he said he wanted a fully functioning server so I assume he wants Server 2008. If he is misusing the term server and only needs a peer network then he can install Windows 7.

  • Unable to set the ip address for hosted network client after creating WIFI hotspot

Original Title: INTERNET CONNECTIVITY PROBLEM WITH MY LAPTOP WIFI HOTSPOT
    HI all
I am able to use internet connection from my lap hotspot, when the internet source is Public or private wifi.
so I know the cmd window commands for hotspot and settings of client(sharing to hosted network client, assigning IP address etc.,)
but the problem I am facing is slight different
I am using my cdma wireless broadband datacard as my source internet connection(Reliance netconnect +)
when I try to create hotspot for this, as usual I am able to create the hotspot and able to share the internet to hostednework client.
but I am unable to set the ip address for hosted network client, if I try to set ip 192.169.137.1 and 255.255.255.0
as soon as I close the window, the ip address also disappears
when connect my android phone to that hotspot, it is able to connect but there is no internet connectivity.
when I check the hostednetwork client for packet transmission, both sent and received packet is happening., I mean transmitting
so what cause the failure in internet connectivity but success in hotspot connectivity?
    check the screen shots...
    can u help me..
    its little complicated

    Hi,
Please make sure the Ad hoc connection IP adress is at the same range with your local connection. In addition, how about recreate the ad hoc connection for test, please have a try.
If problem persists, please use Network troubleshooter in Action Center to fix this problem for test.

  • Setting up Oracle Server for Home???

    hello
Please would someone help me, I recently installed in Oracle Developer Suit on my machine, and so far the Developer icons and ohters show up .. but cannot seem to connect to the main Developer suite program frm Start>Programs>Oracle>Oracle Developer Sute....
here is where the big problem is and that is how do I set up a server at home for it, as the college has a server for their oracle program. Without Oracle running i cannot really do my assignment two of using Oracle itself to produce a database through the program.
I want to ask would the Net manager allow me to set up and test the server this way? note that i have followed the instructions of my lecture handsouts taht he put on blackboard, the thing is taht he has not yet shown me how to set it up and get it to run? so I was thinking do any of you people know how to do this?
id b great if you could post some instructions ro guidlalines or email me the screen dumps of how i can clearly set up a server for my program so i can log in with a username and passworld and connect string @ home.
    email is [email protected]

    Bo,
If you have the means, I would recommend placing spatial indexes on a separate physical device from data and other indexes. This is an extension of the data separate from indexes rule of thumb.

  • One server for two networks

    Hello,
I do not already have a Mac Server but I'm planning to buy one, but first of all I got a question.
Is it possible (if the server has two or more ethernet ports) to divide the services on the different ports ?
In my example I want to represent my homepage and other web services on the one ethernet port, that is connected to the web and on the other port I want to enable screen sharing, xgrid and so on to support the local network. I now want to know if it is possible to set up different options for every ethernet port.

Is it possible (if the server has two or more ethernet ports) to divide the services on the different ports ?
You can have (and use) as many ports as you like. Most of my servers have 4.
The issue is in controlling the services. By default, each service will typically listen on all interfaces, meaning they're available from all networks.
To do what you want requires a little tuning of each service to tell it how and where to run. The configuration is based on the service (which ports to run on) rather than the port (which services to support).
The specifics varies by service. It''s easy, for example, to do this with Apache - just tell it the IP address for each site and you're done. It's relatively easy for most of the file sharing protocols. Off hand, I can't think what's involved in ARD or XGrid.
Worst case, even if there isn't an easy mechanism for binding a service to one port, there's always the firewall which you can use to block traffic on the ports you don't want. Not a perfect solution, but it does help.

  • How to set a Proxy Server for appletv

The network I'm on requires that I set a Proxy server to get out to the internet.
Is there anyway to specify a Proxy server for AppleTV?

    Hi Red-Baron,
The Apple TV does not support Proxy Server configuration (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305010). An alternative is to enable internet sharing on a computer and have the Apple TV connect to that computer.

  • Oracle VM Server for SPARC - network multipathing architecture question

This is a general architecture question about how to best setup network multipathing
I am reading the "Oracle VM Server for SPARC 2.2 Administration Guide" but I can't find what I am looking for.
From reading the document is appears it is possible to:
    (a) Configure IPMP in the Service Domain (pg. 155)
    - This protects against link level failure but won't protect against the failure of an entire Service LDOM?
    (b) Configure IPMP in the Guest Domain (pg. 154)
    - This will protect against Service LDOM failure but moves the complexity to the Guest Domain
    - This means the there are two (2) VNICs in the guest though?
In AIX, "Shared Ethernet Adapter (SEA) Failover" it presents a single NIC to the guest but can tolerate failure of a single VIOS (~Service LDOM) as well as link level failure in each VIO Server.
    https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/blogs/aixpert/entry/shared_ethernet_adapter_sea_failover_with_load_balancing198?lang=en
Is there not a way to do something similar in Oracle VM Server for SPARC that provides the following:
    (1) Two (2) Service Domains
    (2) Network Redundancy within the Service Domain
    (3) Service Domain Redundancy
    (4) Simplify the Guest Domain (ie single virtual NIC) with no IPMP in the Guest
Virtual Disk Multipathing appears to work as one would expect (at least according the the documentation, pg. 120). I don't need to setup mpxio in the guest. So I'm not sure why I would need to setup IPMP in the guest.

    Hi,
there's link-based and probe-based IPMP. We use link-based IPMP (in the primary domain and in the guest LDOMs).
For the guest LDOMs you have to set the phys-state linkprop on the vnets if you want to use link-based IPMP:
    ldm set-vnet linkprop=phys-state vnetX ldom-name
If you want to use IPMP with vsw interfaces in the primary domain, you have to set the phys-state linkprop in the vswitch:
    ldm set-vswitch linkprop=phys-state net-dev=<phys_iface_e.g._igb0> <vswitch-name>
    Bye,
    Alexander.

  • Need a product recommendation for small network

    Hello All!
I just started a small computer and network consulting company (in addition to my "day job"). I work for a huge company with several hundred sites, all Cisco networking of course. I am also setting up a small network and computer consulting company to do on the side and will be dealing with small companies and helping them with their network needs. Anyway, I am looking for a entry level Cisco product because my Linksys just isn't going to cut it any more. I want to set up 3 servers and I currently have 5 static IP's from Comcast. I want something that would operate like a PIX515 firewall but that would obviously be overkill for what I am doing. I want the capability to set up port forwarding to the inside from my 5 external IP's. Wi-Fi isn't critical but would be a "nice to have" if it didn't cost too much more. What would be a good product for my needs? I want a NICE CISCO product but not an EXPENSIVE one, either. I am also interested in certification and possibly becoming a VAR soon. Any pointers would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    --GREG--

I would steer clear of the 500 express. Since you seem to be new to cisco products, I would use the opportunity and buy what most of your potential customers already have. Get yourself a pix/asa and a 2900 series switch as first poster suggested. If you are interested in certifications, you will need to learn the command line interface. The 500 express will do you no good as it is all gui. This is only my opinion of course. Oh, and did I see not expensive and cisco in the same sentence. :)

  • Setting up PIX515E VPN for two networks

    Hello,
We have a PIX515E and I want to set it up so it can serve client VPN connections for a network on the inside interface and also for a network on the dmz interface.
On a client machine we set up the ip address of the PIX in a VPN connection and the user can log on using credentials and domain. Now the PIX has to look up credentials using RADIUS, but some users are known on domain A (inside interface) and some users are known on domain B (dmz interface). Domain B is completely different and uses other internal ip addresses, dns servers, ip pool etc.
Already I have set up VPN for the inside interface and that was easy and it works ok.
But can I create such a configuration? We only have one DSL line and we want both networks (domain A 192.168.1.x and domain B 192.168.10.x) to go through this PIX.
Your help is more than appreciated!
    Regards,
    Frank

    rob,
i don't know your budget requirements, but here is a relatively easy solution:
    http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/features/networkingvpn.html
and here is an OSS solution that will take a bit more work (but should run on an older box with bsd, linux, or os x running on it):

  • DNS/web-server hosted off-site. How to set up Leopard server for mail?

    Hey Everyone,
Brand new xserve with leopard server 10.5.2. Currently, Our web and DNS server for our domain,"company.com" is co-located off-site with an MX record of "mail.company.com" pointed at the static IP of the office where our mail server is. I want to replace the mail server with the xserve. With that in mind, how do I configure the DNS on the xserve during initial configuration to reflect that? Give it a self-referencing FQDN like server.company.office and see if the mail service can handle the domain hosted elsewhere?
I'm pretty new to servers and would love be able to keep this all in Standard but I'm not afraid to jump into Advanced if need be. I've created a test domain through GoDaddy of "company2.com" with an MX record of "mail.company2.com" pointing at the IP address of the xserve. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • How can I set a different proxy server for different networks in user.js

I need to automatically set the proxy configuration depending on the network I am connected to. Can this be done through the user.js?
    Simple logic would be:-
    if IP=10.20.30.0 use proxy A
    if IP=172.18.19.0 use proxy B
    else DIRECT
    Thanks
    Leon

No, you can't do it that way.<br />
You could create a set of files user.js and use a bat or cmd file to copy the file with the proxy setting that you want to use to user.js and then start Firefox.
    <pre><nowiki>cd <path to profile folder>
    delete user.js
    copy user-proxy1.js user.js
    start "" "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
    </nowiki></pre>
You can also use an extension.

    *QuickProxy: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/1557

  • Setting up a Server for Filesharing use.

    Hi
I work for a small UK based charity - we are just 4 employees - helping with conservation of wildlife, promotion of education and support of communities throughout Africa. Each year we raise about £1.8 Million and currently have 42 projects running in 17 African countries.
We are about to purchase an Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server as our first ever office server. Initially, the main purpose of new server is for storing sharing files as currently was have no form of centralised storage nor do we have a central back-up policy.
As we are a small team, we spend a lot of time out of the office and so will need remote access to the central document / fileserver etc.
I have one question at this stage - is it better to set up remote access via the Snow Leopard’s VPN software - or - is it possible / easier / better to do this via the new Mobile Access Server application?
If I have to go the VPN route I would welcome any advice on how this is configured / set up - and also whether I need to request a fixed IP from our ISP to make it work.
I am very new to Mac Server Software and also Networking (IP / security etc.) and so would be really grateful for any help / advice / links to help-sites etc.
    Thank you!

I am not familiar with the Mobile Access Server approach, but have implemented the VPN option. There are several factors to consider. Regarding fixed IP address, that is definitely the preferred method, though the dyndns.org approach also works. Of more importance is the bandwidth that your internet connection provides. Most end-user connections have fast download speeds but the upload speed are severely curtailed. If you intend to grab data from within your own facility, the upload speed will be very important.
The VPN approach, to me, is the correct way to go about it. It basically makes your remote machine pretend it is sitting in your office. You can connect to the OpenDirectory LDAP server, have it tell your machine about automounts, allow remote authentication, and a host of similar things.
A Mac Mini is certainly a decent platform, though my preference is running on a Mac Pro, that way you have a much stronger hardware platform that can run, for example, a RAID setup.
The last time I used Rumpus, it was basically an FTP server. If that is the approach you're thinking of using, you might be better off using a 3rd party ftp site, as the access speeds will be way higher.
Another approach, if the amount of data that is shared is minimal, is dropbox.com. It is by far the best system I've seen to share data, as any modifications you make are very quickly mirrored to every other machine that is part of the group. The caveat is that their large-quantity data plans are pricey.
