Setting up a software Mirror

To all that may provide insight.
I ordered a MBP and need to transfer some data to an external before it arrives. I want to mirror two firewire 400 externals, on the new MBP, when it arrives.
I want to copy the data (250 mb) over to the existing external before the MBP arrives (because it takes a long time & I need to get it off of my old MacPro). Then I want to plug it up to the new MBP (when it arrives) and daisy chain a second external. After connecting the second external, will I be able to create a mirror of the 1st external (while it currently has information on it)? Or will Disk Utility need to erase the drives to configure the mirror?
Thanks in advance,
-Grant

  • I have some questions regarding setting up a software RAID 0 on a Mac Pro

I have some questions regarding setting up a software RAID 0 on a Mac pro (early 2009).
These questions might seem stupid to many of you, but, as my last, in fact my one and only, computer before the Mac Pro was a IICX/4/80 running System 7.5, I am a complete novice regarding this particular matter.
A few days ago I installed a WD3000HLFS VelociRaptor 300GB in bay 1, and moved the original 640GB HD to bay 2. I now have 2 bootable internal drives, and currently I am using the VR300 as my startup disk. Instead of cloning from the original drive, I have reinstalled the Mac OS, and all my applications & software onto the VR300. Everything is backed up onto a WD SE II 2TB external drive, using Time Machine. The original 640GB has an eDrive partition, which was created some time ago using TechTool Pro 5.
The system will be used primarily for photo editing, digital imaging, and to produce colour prints up to A2 size. Some of the image files, from scanned imports of film negatives & transparencies, will be 40MB or larger. Next year I hope to buy a high resolution full frame digital SLR, which will also generate large files.
Currently I am using Apple's bundled iPhoto, Aperture 2, Photoshop Elements 8, Silverfast Ai, ColorMunki Photo, EZcolor and other applications/software. I will also be using Photoshop CS5, when it becomes available, and I will probably change over to Lightroom 3, which is currently in Beta, because I have had problems with Aperture, which, until recent upgrades (HD, RAM & graphics card) to my system, would not even load images for print. All I had was a blank preview page, and a constant, frozen "loading" message - the symbol underneath remained static, instead of revolving!
It is now possible to print images from within Aperture 2, but I am not happy with the colour fidelity, whereas it is possible to produce excellent, natural colour prints using its "minnow" sibling, iPhoto!
My intention is to buy another 3 VR300s to form a 4 drive Raid 0 array for optimum performance, and to store the original 640GB drive as an emergency bootable back-up. I would have ordered the additional VR300s already, but for the fact that there appears to have been a run on them, and currently they are out of stock at all, but the more expensive, UK resellers.
I should be most grateful to receive advice regarding the following questions:
    QUESTION 1:
I have had a look at the RAID setting up facility in Disk Utility and it states: "To create a RAID set, drag disks or partitions into the list below".
If I install another 3 VR300s, can I drag all 4 of them into the "list below" box, without any risk of losing everything I have already installed on the existing VR300?
Or would I have to reinstall the OS, applications and software again?
I mention this, because one of the applications, Personal accountz, has a label on its CD wallet stating that the Licence Key can only be used once, and I have already used it when I installed it on the existing VR300.
    QUESTION 2:
I understand that the failure of just one drive will result in all the data in a Raid 0 array being lost.
Does this mean that I would not be able to boot up from the 4 drive array in that scenario?
Even so, it would be worth the risk to gain the optimum performance provide by Raid 0 over the other RAID setup options, and, in addition to the SE II, I will probably back up all my image files onto a portable drive as an additional precaution.
    QUESTION 3:
Is it possible to create an eDrive partition, using TechTool Pro 5, on the VR300 in bay !?
Or would this not be of any use anyway, in the event of a single drive failure?
    QUESTION 4:
Would there be a significant increase in performance using a 4 x VR300 drive RAID 0 array, compared to only 2 or 3 drives?
    QUESTION 5:
If I used a 3 x VR300 RAID 0 array, and installed either a cloned VR300 or the original 640GB HD in bay 4, and I left the Startup Disk in System Preferences unlocked, would the system boot up automatically from the 4th. drive in the event of a single drive failure in the 3 drive RAID 0 array which had been selected for startup?
Apologies if these seem stupid questions, but I am trying to determine the best option without foregoing optimum performance.

    Well said.
    Steps to set up RAID
Setting up a RAID array in Mac OS X is part of the installation process. This procedure assumes that you have already installed Mac OS 10.1 and the hard drive subsystem (two hard drives and a PCI controller card, for example) that RAID will be implemented on. Follow these steps:
    1. Open Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities).
    2. When the disks appear in the pane on the left, select the disks you wish to be in the array and drag them to the disk panel.
    3. Choose Stripe or Mirror from the RAID Scheme pop-up menu.
    4. Name the RAID set.
    5. Choose a volume format. The size of the array will be automatically determined based on what you selected.
    6. Click Create.
Recovering from a hard drive failure on a mirrored array
    1. Open Disk Utility in (/Applications/Utilities).
    2. Click the RAID tab. If an issue has occurred, a dialog box will appear that describes it.
    3. If an issue with the disk is indicated, click Rebuild.
    4. If Rebuild does not work, shut down the computer and replace the damaged hard disk.
    5. Repeat steps 1 and 2.
    6. Drag the icon of the new disk on top of that of the removed disk.
    7. Click Rebuild.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2559
    Drive A + B = VOLUME ONE
    Drive C + D = VOLUME TWO
What you put on those volumes is of course up to you and easy to do.
A system really only needs to be backed up "as needed" like before you add or update or install anything.
/Users can be backed up hourly, daily, weekly schedule
    Media files as needed.
    Things that hurt performance:
    Page outs
Spotlight - disable this for boot drive and 'scratch'
SCRATCH: Temporary space; erased between projects and steps.

(normally I'd link to Wikipedia but I can't load right now)
Disk drives are the slowest component, so tackling that has always made sense. Easy way to make a difference. More RAM only if it will be of value and used. Same with more/faster processors, or graphic card.

How do I use GarageBand as a amp/speaker to listen to my Electronic Drum set? I have a MIDI-USB cord already but I can't figure out how to listen to my set through the software using my computer speakers?

If you want to listen to the sounds of your drum set, you should use an audio cable and connect it to the computer's line-in, then create a real instrument track.
If you use a Midi/USB interface, you'll have to create a software instrument track and select one of GB's drumsets as the instrument. Hopefully your drumset's midi notes are mapped to the right sounds in GB.

  • Solaris 10 and Software Mirroring

    Hey Folks,
I'm attempting to configure software mirroring on a Solaris 10 system. Because this system is a v440, I'm using the hardware mirroring for the OS.
The other two drives in the system I am using for a database, and so, will configure software raid on them. However, I've done the following:
(created slice 3 and 4 on each drive for metadbs)
    prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c1t2d0s2 | fmthard -s - /dev/rdsk/c1t3d0s2
    metadb -af -c 2 /dev/dsk/c1t2d0s3 /dev/dsk/c1t2d0s4
    metadb -af -c 2 /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s3 /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s4
    # below is the only partition i need to mirror, which will hold the
    # oracle db files
    metainit -f d20 1 1 /dev/dsk/c1t2d0s0
    metainit -f d30 1 1 /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s0
    metainit d2 -m d20
    metattach d2 d30
After running metattach, both drives syncronize, and appears to be fine. I can mount it, read/write etc..
As such, I updated vfstab with the following:
    /dev/md/dsk/d2 /dev/md/rdsk/d2 /opt/app/oracle/oradata ufs 2 yes -
    and a mount -a works..
On reboot, it seems like my mirror has disappeared:
    Can't stat /dev/md/rdsk/d2
    /dev/md/rdsk/d2: CAN'T CHECK FILE SYSTEM.
/dev/md/rdsk/d2: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
fsckall failed with exit code 1.
WARNING - Unable to repair one or more filesystems.
    Run fsck manually (fsck filesystem...).

    Jun 27 08:18:30 svc.startd[7]: system/filesystem/local:default failed fatally
You'll notice from my steps, I did not run metaroot. I cannot, since ths is not a root partition and metaroot gives an error.
Which brings me to my question, what have I missed? Why does software raid fall apart on reboot?

    Hi!
I have found these two errors too.
The second one I`m still trying to solve, but, in order to solve the first one, please, check if the parameters of you vfstab are written in the same line, like this:
#device device mount FS fsck mount mount
#to mount to fsck point type pass at boot options
    fd - /dev/fd      fd      -      no -
    /proc - /proc      proc      -      no -
    /dev/md/dsk/d2 -      -      swap - no -
    /dev/md/dsk/d1 /dev/md/rdsk/d1 /      ufs 1 no -
    /dev/md/dsk/d4 /dev/md/rdsk/d4 /etc/opt/OV ufs 2     yes -
    /dev/md/dsk/d5 /dev/md/rdsk/d5 /opt/OV      ufs 2 yes     -
    /dev/md/dsk/d3 /dev/md/rdsk/d3 /var/opt/OV ufs 2     yes -
If not, Solaris 10 does not recognize the parameters that are written in the line below. (Don`t ask me why).
    Hope it helps,

  • What do the NI Automotive Diagnostic Command Set & ECU Measurement software packages really bring?

I am looking at doing some CAN programming for the J1939 and J1708/1587 protocols.  Would the NI Automotive Diagnostic Command Set & ECU Measurement software modules even be necessary?
What are the benefits of both modules?

Just for reference, look here for comments on the J1939 and J1708/1587 protocols.
The ECU Measurement and Calibration Toolkit provides a helpful API for interfacing and designing an ECU. In particular, it provides high-level, easy-to-use functions based on the Universal
Measurement and Calibration Protocol (XCP) and CAN Calibration Protocol
(CCP). A more detailed explanation of what is included and when it should be used can be found in Chapter 1 of the ECU Measurement and Calibration Toolkit User Manual.
    Automotive Diagnostic Command Set
From the overview section of the product page: "NI ADCS is suitable for a range of automotive diagnostic applications
that typically involve reading and writing parameters, accessing
diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), flashing ECU firmware, and initiating
ECU diagnostic test modes... ADCS benefits applications such as ECU firmware flashing tools, DTC

  • Disk Utility: Software mirror message behavior

    Dear readers
I did setup a Mac Mini Server the following way.
Disk Utility stared from the System DVD.
    - Delete both internal drives
    - Create a mirror inside disk utility
    - Make two partitions on this newly created drive
    - Installed the system
    - Configured it after update
So far every thing works fine.
    My question is now,
    - how does the system announce the information, that the mirror is broken because of a defect of one of the mirrored drives?
    - if there is such a message, is it possible to use this message inside a script which would send a report to a known email account if something goes wrong?
    - has someone done something similar or how doe administrators of bigger systems (like Xserve) handle this?
Thank you for anyones response and tips
    Kind regards from Switzerland
    Thomas

    Hi !
MacOS X perform doesn't perform information on Software Mirror Status…
You must perform a shell script for that…

  • Setting up RAID-1 mirror as aliased boot device on V240

    Hi Guys,
I've successfully mirrored 4 slices from the original disk
to the second one in our v240, the raid as such works,
and is consistent. I then did the following:
    <div class="pre"><pre>installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0init 0devalias disk_mirror /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2/sd@1,0:aboot disk_mirror</pre></div>
But on reboot the machine complained that it couldn't
    find the kernel ...
    What did I do wrong?

Actually I think he just didn't believe me when I said
that I have SUCCESSFULLY mirrored 4 slices (/, /var swap
and /adv). Yes, I did use metastat to check on the
process, and yes, after a couple of hours even the
largest slice (/adv) was successfully mirrored.

One of the things that can be confusing when moving from Linux on PC to Solaris on SPARC systems is the obp, far more robust than BIOS! I have found that this puts Linux administrators off using SPARC systems, but these systems aren't that complicated if you understand how to use them ( entry level systems at least ). A good place to start is http://docs.sun.com/ and BigAdmin. As Michael suggested the man pages are an excellent source for quick information. Any time I work on a Linux system I use the man pages all the time because the GNU commands can be different. In fact during exams like the RHCE you are allowed to use the man pages to help you answer the problems/questions. • Little software mirror raid configuration question

Setting up a Boot volume mirror RAID of two internal drives with Disk Utility -- any suggestions as to whether to check "RAID Mirror AutoRebuild" or not?
I understand the concept, but in practice am wondering, if I leave it unchecked, will I be notified if one of the drives fails? Don't really want to be having to manually check periodically if both are still running okay...
    Thanks!

Thanks so much for thoughts and that great software pointer. I bought two of the same make/model drives with this mirror in mind so I should be cool there.
Yeah, I know your backup advice is very sound -- and I'm absolutely still chewing on whether I want to put my eggs in Mirror RAID or Super Duper. I understand the pro/cons of each, but I also just know that I'm not going to do both -- I'm just not that high maintenance/big spender.
I was edging towards mirror just because, in 3 years of doing regular clone backups I've never happened to have the need to restore yesterday's system due to a bum software update or the like, but I have had drives fail on me and lose the last two days of intensive work... I like that with Mirror there's no thought.

  • How to set up and auto-mirror a networked drive?

So here's the situation.  I currently have a MBP Retina 15 (max spec'd), and there are some design processes that still run a little slow for my liking.  Given that I spend about half my working life at a desk plugged into a monitor anyway, I figured I'd get a Mac Pro to use when I'm in the office.
What I need help with is how to:
-Set up an external networked drive so that I can open and save all my projects to the same place regardless of which machine I'm working on.  I spend 90% of my laptop working time at home on the same network.
-Have the networked drive auto-back up to another external storage device so that in case of HD failure.  Basically I want to save a file, and have it expeditiously (ideally instantly, but the sooner the better) back up to the secondary HD.
Somebody at the Apple Store suggested using a USB HD plugged into Airport Extreme, and that would work, I suppose, but
    1) I'd really prefer something plugged in to the Mac Pro to speed up the data transfer at least one one machine.
    2) There's only 1 USB port on the Airport Extreme.  So if we were to go this way, the back up mechanism would need to be built in to the drive -- some sort of double external HD that auto-mirrors.
    Any suggestions?

    Could you use textarea?
    sym.$('inputfiled').html('<textarea cols="20" rows="3"></textarea>);
actually the form I used in the file is:
    inputMessage = $('<textarea />').attr({'type':'textarea','rows':'10', 'cols': '25','value':'', 'id':'message'});
