Setting up a test AD domain to practice Exchange Server 2003 to 2010 migration

Please critique my plan to upgrade our Exch 2003 server to 2010.
I want to start by setting up a test domain using an old Win Svr 2003 DC, and another old win 2003 server as an Exch 2003 mail server.
This test domain will be connected to our existing LAN so I need to make sure it doesn’t cause any problems.
We are a small single domain shop with a public domain name that I will call “mycompany.net” for the purposes of this question.
Our DC’s are named: “dc05.main.mycompany.net”, “dc06.main.mycompany.net”
Mail server: “mail1.main.mycompany.net”
Public DNS for our domain has an MX record that points to a public IP we use for our Sonicwall spam filter. The firewall has a 1 to 1 NAT entry to route that public IP to the LAN IP of the spam filter with corresponding rule that allows smtp to that LAN
IP.
The spam filter routes good mail to the Exch Svr, and the Exch Svr uses the spam filter as a smart host for outgoing mail.
Another public DNS entry points “smtp.mycompany.net” to our firewall which 1 to 1 NAT’s that public IP to another LAN IP of our Exch Svr (we have 2 IP’s assigned to this server). This is used for OWA, ActiveSync etc. to the Exch Svr.
Test Domain Setup
I plan to name the test domain “test.mycompany.net”.
DC = “dc01.test.mycompany.net”
Mail = “mail.test.mycompany.net”
Public DNS MX record for “test.mycompany.net” to point to a currently unused public IP we have available.
MX record for “test.mycompany.net” will point to public IP x.x.x.10
Firewall will NAT that public IP to the LAN IP x.x.x.30, and allow smtp on that IP to route to the sonicwall spam filter.
The spam filter will have in incoming mail path setup that routes mail with source IP x.x.x.30 to the test mail server.
Outgoing mail configuration on the test mail server will be the same as the “main” exch svr I guess.
Once the test domain seems to be working:
I will obtain an SSL certificate (we are not using SSL now) and apply it to the test mail server, so I can figure out how that works.
Then I will add a new Win Svr 2008 R2, Exch Svr 2010 machine to the test domain and go thru the procedure of migrating to it.
Once I feel like I know what I am doing I will plan the migration of the “main” domain mail server.
Primary concern is to not allow this testing to disrupt the operation of our currrent systems.
I know this is a lot to ask, but I’m hoping some of you guys just love this stuff so much you will enjoy thinking about it and helping me with any constructive suggestions.
Thank you.

  • A problem with Win 7 Pro, Outlook Web Access based on Exchange Server 2003, and two different domains

    Dear Microsoft Support,
    As mentioned in the title,
I have two domains. One is Domain A at HQ. The other one is Domain A at branch office. A laptop having Win 7 Pro OS is a client of Domain A. The Domain A has Exchange Server 2003. Users of Domain B get connected to Exchange Server for email services. In
all clients of the Domain B, IP address of the email server added in C:\Windows\System 32\drivers\etc\host file.
Whereas in the clients of Domain A it was not done, because all the servers including the email server belong to the Domain A.
Now, a user with Domain A's client (it is a laptop) came to Branch office and wanted to access the Outlook (using Outlook Web Access). since there is no IP address added in the Host file of the laptop, connectivity to email is not possible. When I try to
add the IP address, I was not able to do so due to Domain A's security reasons.
So, let me know, is there a way out to add the IP address in the host file of the Domain A's client.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ravi Sekhar Modukuru

I would suggest adding the mailserver address in Domain B's DNS. Would that be possible?
I agree. The correct solution in this case (since it appears you already have a two-way Domain Trust in place) is to properly configure DNS in Domain 'B' to be a secondary of Domain 'A' and completely eliminate the need to maintain the HOSTS file.

  • Exchange Server 2003 SP2 - Forest and Domain Functional Level Limitations

    Hi All
Bit of a legacy question and theres not much clarity out there..
I need to confirm the highest DFL and FFL Supported by Microsoft for Exchange 2003 SP2?
We currently have a mix of 2003 R2 and 2008 R2 domain controllers with the FFL and DFL currently set at 2003 R2.
The plan is to move to Exchange 2010 in the very near future, so the question is do we need to wait until we upgrade to Exchange 2010 Before upgrading the DFL and FFL to 2008 R2?
From what Ive read we will need to complete the Exchange upgrade first before moving forward with the functional level upgrades..
    Thanks in advance
    Bull

    Hi Bull,
As Ed mentioned, Exchange server 2003 and Exchange 2010 support Windows Server 2003 domain functional level and Windows Server 2003 forest functional level, also supported in higher environment.
More details about it, please refer to “Supported Active Directory environment” section:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff728623(v=exchg.150).aspx
Note that we cannot add new DCs which are the less version of Windows Server
cannot be added to the domain or forest. More details about
the Impact of Upgrading the Domain or Forest Functional Level, for your reference:

  • How to Add other Domains to my Exchange Server 2007

Right now I have four different business locations.  We use our Exchange server and outlook.  The other locations just use a mail provider.  I want to add those three different domains to my exchange server and so we can all use my exchange
server for a more unified email experience.  Thanks in advance.

I would assume they are in the same forest just different domain like child domain right?

  • Use Different mailbox or same mailbox if setup two accepted domains in one Exchange Server 2010

    Hi,
I want to know if I setup two accepted domain in one Exchange Server 2010, will it have another mailbox or use same mailbox?

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, to add a new name in the accepted domain list is to add a SMTP address suffix for the mailboxes. Thus, it uses the same mailbox if you setup two accepted domain in one Exchange Server 2010.
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.

  • Compatibility Exchange Server 2003 SP2 and Domain controllers Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi all, I have this scenario:
    - Two Domain Controllers Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2
    - Two mail servers Exchange Server 2003 with the following version:
      6.5 (Build 7638.2 Service Pack 2)
I want to upgrade my domain controllers to Windows Server 2008 R2.
My question is whether exchange Server 2003 6.5 (Build 7638.2 Service Pack 2) is supported with Domain Controllers Windows Server 2008 R2.
Can you tell me some official Microsoft website where this reflected?
    regards
Microsoft Certified IT Professional Server Administrator

Exchange Server 2003 SP2 supports DCs running Windows Server 2008 R2. These DCs should be RWDCs and not RODCs:
Exchange 2003 SP2 will now be supported against writeable Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory Servers.  Additionally, with the General Availability of Exchange Server 2010, and those looking to standardize on Windows
Server 2008 R2 we have enhanced the supportability of forest and domain functional levels up to Windows Server 2008 R2.  This change is effective immediately on Exchange 2003 SP2.

  • Renaming Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller with Exchange Server 2013

Is it possible to rename Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller, as we are using Exchange Server 2013 as a member server on Windows Server 2012 ?
We have some issues with the Domain Name, so want to rename..
Maybe somebody knows the best practices how to do this in best way???
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    You should do the following:
    1. Promote another DC.
    2. Transfer FSMO roles to that server.
    3. Decommission old DC.
    4. Rename it.
    5. Promote it again as DC.

  • Setting up your iPhone to sync with 1and1 Exchange Server.

_+*You *must have* iPhone firmware version 2.0 and higher to sync to Exchange Services+.*
iPhone and 1and1 exchange work amazingly well. Most folks out there are still using the IMAP side of the 1and1 Exchange service. *"THIS IS NOT FULLY FUNCTIONING EXCHAHGE"*! Here is how to really set up your phone to sync Mail, Calendars, and Contacts with 1and1 Exchange accounts.
    From your home screen:
1: Go to the settings control panel on your iphone.
2: Touch the "*Mail, Contacts, Calendars*" tab.
3: Touch the "*Add Account...*" tab.
4: Touch the "*Microsoft Exchange*" tab.
A screen asking you to "*Enter your Exchange account information*" will appear.
5: type your email address attached to your 1and1.com exchange account.
    ex. "[email protected]"
6: type your domainusername. Your 1and1 username is one that is assigned to you by 1and1.
the username must be typed out in this manner: exchangee123456789
*If you already know your 1and1 Exchange Username then skip to step 7.*
Your 1and1 username starts with an "e" and its followed by nine numbers (ex.: e123456789). If you do not know this username you have to go to your Administrator panel at the 1and1 site,(Here is the URL to the admin page. *http://admin.1and1.com*).At the prompt enter your customer number *which is located on your monthly 1and1 invoice* followed by your password. if you have never seen this control panel you will have to sign in and get a password to access this area. Once in the Admin area under the packages tab click the url labled "*1&1 Microsoft Exchange*". You will now be in the *Administration Tab*. Now under the *communications tool* section click the URL labeled *"Microsoft® Exchange Account Overview"*. You will now see a list of the exchange usernames in that exchange package. Find your username and either print out the page or write the number down.
7: type your 1and1 exchange account password.
8: type a description that best corresponds with your 1and1 exchange account. As a suggestion you should type a description that makes your account stand out. "*ex. 1and1 exchange account*" (this will be helpful later in distinguishing what calendars come from which account if you are syncing multiple calendars.)
9: touch the "Next" button at the top right of the screen.
iPhone will connect with the 1and1 exchange server and authenticate your account. If the authentication fails check one of your entries then try again.
10: once iPhone authenticates your account a field called "Server" will appear between the "Email" and "Username" fields. Enter "exchange.1and1.com" into this field.
11: touch the "Next" button at the top right of the screen.
12: Select which part of the Exchange Services you would like sync with your iPhone.
ie. *Mail, Contacts, or Calendars*. (Simply slide the on or off switch next to the service you either wish to sync or exclude.)
13: once you have chosen your services touch the "Save" button at the top right of the screen.
iPhone will once again contact the 1and1 Exchange server. You will be returned to the mail settings screen.
    You are now done
If you don't have any contacts on your iPhone just go look at your address book now. If you chose to sync your address book all of your contacts have populated themselves into your iPhone contacts tab.
    AWESOME
Welcome to Exchange on the iPhone!
Some thing to try to verify your Exchange account.
1: Create a Calendar or Address book entree in your iPhone. Now watch it appear on your Outlook account.
2: Tell a friend with Outlook to invite you to a calendar event. You will receive an invitation right there on your iPhone screen.
Have fun and enjoy your new iPhone.

Unless Apple decides to license ActiveSync from MS, this will not happen.
Apple hasn't done so since OS X was first released for whatever the reason or reasons and although always/never should not be used, I'm not sure how likely this is.
I venture to say that Apple is well aware that the iPhone is limited to business use as is - at least for those with an Exchange account - with a company or IT department not willing to enable IMAP account access for email accounts. Initially, the iPhone was not designed nor intended for the enterprise/business market as is a Blackberry, Palm or Windows Mobile device. It is obvious from the commercials that the focus - at the present time anyway, is as a consumer device. The iPhone/iPod Touch SDK scheduled to be released on March 6 may change this but what will come out of the SDK and when is unknown at this point.
If you need to access your Exchange account with the iPhone and your company and IT department refuses to enable IMAP account access, there are no workarounds for this. There are ways to make accessing an IMAP account secure by requiring SSL for the incoming and outgoing mail servers and the iPhone also supports VPN - virtual private network access which is secure.
Other than that and you don't want to keep the iPhone for personal use, it is probably best to return it and wait until after the SDK is released to see what may turn up.

  • Migrate Domain Controller include Exchange Server

Beside the above suggestions, you may also walk through this informative technet article that covers almost all the required steps and provides step-wise instructions to accomplish this task in simple way : http://blogs.technet.com/b/chrisavis/archive/2013/10/01/performing-an-in-place-upgrade-of-server-200... Initiately i have the same problem. I figured out, first i have to uncheck "use Autodiscover Service". Enter your company server into external server and change the user name to your nt username. Check on use autodiscover service and let it run. I managed to retrived all my email without enter domain.

Hey guys, this is the scenario,
Company A has its own domain 2008 server with exchange 2007, users have email address [email protected]
Company B is a subsidiary with its own AD domain Server 2012 R2. trust is set up between the domains.
currently the users in Company B have email addresses [email protected] ( dont want to change this)
when users login to Company B's AD, they are then prompted to enter credentials for Company A's AD account.
I wan to enable a single sign on so that the email address [email protected] will authenticate using the company B credentials. thus eliminating the need for users in Company B to have 2 AD accounts.

  • Lumia 800 Can's set up to Works Exchange Server

    Hi There.
Just bought the new Lumia 800, and find it kind of cool. Uses loooots of battery though.
I have a problem setting it up to connect with my works exchange server.
    - I put in the email and the password, it wont connect
-I then key in my username, it still wont connect
    - I Press Advanced
    - Then I key in the Server (Webserver) without the "https://"
    - The Sign in button is gray and it wont connect
    - I uncheck the SSL option, no cange
    - I've mailed the SSL Certificarte, and tried both with SSL on an SSL of, still the Sign In button is gray.
Can anybody help me with this?
Since it is Windows on the phone, there should be no problems connecting with MS Exchange i should think.
This have been working quite easy with my iPhone and HTC with Android.
there I just keyd in Mailadress, username, password and server.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi AllaNMP,
Thanks for your 1st post and let me welcome you to the Nokia discussion forums!
I have a Lumia device as well and just literally setup the exchange email to test this out with my work emails and it seems to be working fine. So just to talk you through the process I went through:
Firstly go into settings and then scroll down email. Then select add an account and then scroll down to advanced setup.
This will then take you a screen where it should say Other account. From here enter the email address you wish to add so in my instance it was my work email. The password you need to add is your computer password so in my instance its the password I log into my P.C.
Once you have entered this the next screen will ask you the kind of account you wish to setup please select exchange server.
Once you select this the next screen will show the following options:
Email address (This should automatically be filled out)
Password ( Again these details will be automatically entered)
User Name - This is the username you use to log into your work P.C
Domain - These details you will need to get from your place of works I.T department
Server - Once again these details you will need to get from your place of work I.T department
Make sure Server requires encrypted (SSL) connection is selected.
The rest is fairly self explanatory and you can set this to your preference. Once you are sure you have entered all the credentials correctly select sign in and it should syncing.  And that should be it!
Remember whenever you change your password at your place of work this will also need to be changed to match it on your phone!
Go back to the main Windows screen and the tile should be automatically added to your main page.
Give this a go and let me know how you get on.
    Regards

  • Windows 7 pro client cannot access folders on server 2003 domain server

I added a windows 7 64 bit client to a server 2003 32 bit domain 3 weeks ago and file sharing was working fine until today, 5/4/12. Now, when trying to access shared folders that reside on the server,
I get the following "access denied" message:
[…folder…] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The user name could not be found.
    Strangely enough...
    The windows 7 client
can open shared folders that reside on the XP clients in the domain
All the XP clients in the domain can access the server 2003 folders
All the XP clients and the server 2003 machine can access shared folders and printers on the windows 7 client.
The windows 7 client can ping the server 2003 machine and vice versa
I can “see” the server in my network list, but when I click on it, I get the same “access denied” message listed above.
So... the only problem is that the windows 7 client cannot access folders that reside on the windows server 2003 machine. There must be some sharing setting that got changed
    by a recent windows update.
Here is what I have done/verified so far on the windows 7 client:
In advanced sharing settings for Home/Work, Public and Domain profiles:
    network discovery is enabled
file and print sharing is enabled
use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers is selected (I also tried allowing windows to manage homegroup connections instead, but the problem remained.)
40 -56 bit encryption is enabled
    In “gpedit.msc” Local Policies/Security Settings:
    enabled the following policies:
Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation
Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users
    disabled the following policies:
Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares
What am I missing? Are there policies on the server that need to be adjusted?
Please help! My business is crippled if I cannot access server files from this workstation. Thank you in advance.
