Setting up a WDS with airport extreme and Belkin router

Hi,
I had my airport extreme base station set up with a linksys router (the common one everyone has) and it worked fine. I moved and now am trying to set it up with a Belkin F5D7234-4, and have not been able to get it to work. I have tried both the WLAN and the LAN MAC addresses. Is there something I am missing? Thanks

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Belkin router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS).
The few Belkin routers, that are known to work are models: F5D7230-4 and F5D7231

  • Create a WDS with Airport Extreme and Belkin Pre-N

I would like to setup a WDS using my Airport Extreme Base as the main router and a Belkin Wireless Pre-N (F5D8230-4) as a remote client. I have done this successfully using Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS routers (using Sveasoft's firmware upgrade which has WDS), but haven't been able to get a good configuration for the Belkin, nor have I been able to locate a firmware for it.
At this point I'm not concerned about encryption, so leave that variable out. I just can't determine what settings the Belkin router needs to work. I've tried a lot of combinations based on my experience with the Linksys models.
    Thanks,
    Wes

The Linksys models you reference are some of the few items that will work with Apple's implementation of WDS.
I don't believe that the Belkin device has that ability.

  • How to Set Up Time Capsule With Airport Extreme and Airport Express

Just got a new 1TB Time Capsule. I want it to be the main base station for my network. I already have a network set up with an older Airport Extreme base station and an Airport Express to extend it. I am thinking that rather than setting up the Time Capsule to "join" the old network, the best approach is to disconnect the Airport Extreme and Airport Express and reset them. Then set up the Time Capsule as a brand new network and bring the reset Aiport Extreme and Express onto the new network as if my original network never existed.
Is that the right approach or am I complicating it? Can I just join the Time Capsule to the existing network and still make it the main base station for the network?

I'd first use AirPort Utility to "Save a Copy As" of your AirPort Extreme settings. Then disconnect it, connect the Time Capsule in its place, and use AirPort Utility's "Import" function to read those settings. (Both of those functions are under AirPort Utility's "File" menu.) You may have to adjust a few settings. Once you have the Time Capsule working as you want, you can reconfigure your AirPort Extreme unit as you wish.

  • Using a current Time Capsule with Airport Extreme and Airport Express Older generation

I am looking to achieve a fast local network that allows streaming of music and video. I have bought a Time Capsule to replace the Telstra router (Thomson Router) by linking it using ethernet cable and then set up a network that also uses and older airport extreme and express router (g standard).
It would appear that the local network speed is slow - how can I assess the connection speed in the local network - both wireless and for ethernet?  I believe that there is a speed indication on my two older macs running OSX 10.5 but not in OSX 10.6.  Is there a tool to assess the local network speed?
The current set up works less well than previously only using the Thomson router, so the initial results are very disappointing.  Not even streaming music seems to work and it stutters to halt.
I had expected that the dual band functionality would allow fast local connections where needed.  What do I need to change?
    Thanks you.
    Tom

    Hi Bob,
The two old airports (extreme and express) are connected wirelessly to the time capsule base station with the following use:
    - round extreme base station supports a printer only - remote WDS indicated in set up
    - airport express supports remote speakers - set up does not indicate WDS status
I noticed in another note to provide a second network name to 5GHz network and connect the modern computers, ipad (seems to be able to connect) and apple tv to the 5 GHz network, leaving the other on the separate network.  Also the two computers, apart from the laptops are connected via ethernet to use the GB ethernet, but I am not sure whether that speed is achieved or whether a firewire connection between the two would be better. use examples are:
    1. Wirelessly I am trying to use three speakers - computer, apple tv and express - to have to listen to the same music in three rooms.
    2. Over ethernet, I am using the the powermac as a file server to mac mini, but would like to be bale to access photo libraries (both Iphoto and Aperture) ideally over the network.  It works well with starting the powermac in target disk mode but seems slow over what should be a very fast ethernet network.
The connection with the service providers router and time capsule is bridged - seems to be the only way of providing internet access - however, it also seems to allow for shared devices to be visible across the two time capsule and the Thomson network.
Obviously, this will need some more experimentation but any input would be appreciated.
    Thank you and regards,
    Tom

  • Cannot create WDS with Airport Extreme 802.11n and Airport Express b/g

I have gone through all the steps to set up a WDS with my Airport Extreme Dual Band and my Airport Express b/g.
Every time I try to set it up and update the AX the AX disappears from the airport utility and I can no longer see it. I can however set it up to "join a network" just fine.
Anyone have any idea why I cannot do this? I haven't seen anything saying that the AE is not compatible with the AX.
Ideally what I would like to do is have the AX extend the network and then use an ethernet cable to connect it to an imac g4, thus giving the computer "wireless" internet.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks

So just to clarify even if I was to buy a new "n" AX I would still be relegated to "g" speeds?
That's correct if you use the WDS settings on both the AEBS and AX.
But, if you had the "n" AX, you could configure it to "extend a wireless network" and maintain "n" speeds on the network. There would still be some bandwidth loss...10-15% or so...that's unavoidable unless you go to an ethernet connection method.
Do you think for my application it might be better to just buy a reputable wireless usb dongle?
If I understand correctly, you need an ethernet connection for a computer. Why not consider a pair of ethernet powerline adapters? One device plugs in near your AEBS and the other near the device that needs the ethernet connection. The pseudo ethernet signal is conducted over the AC powerlines in your home. This is the next best choice when you can't run an ethernet cable through the house.
This would be a faster and more stable connection than any type of wireless application. It's plug and play. In addition to the powerline adapters, all you'll need are two short ethernet cables to connect one adapter to a LAN port on the AEBS and another short ethernet cable to connect from the adapter to the G4's ethernet port.
Any electronics superstore will have a selection to look at. The cost is approximately $75-125 for a pair depending on how much speed you choose.

  • Trouble with airport extreme and express

Hey all. I recently bought a new airport extreme and I'm now having problems setting up a network with the airport express. the airport express that we have is connected to a very old G3 iMac because it doesn't have an airport card and is upstairs. I have so far managed to set up the airport extreme so my G4 iBook and my MacBook Pro are both connected via wireless. The trouble seems to be that I can't get the next step set up as i'm not very experienced with networks and I can't get the express to establish a connection with the extreme. i hope somebody could help me sort out the next step. On a side note, this new airport extreme doesn't allow my xbox 360 to connect to it and i wondered if there is any way I can get it to connect again via wireless, either by changing a setting or the security?
Any help and feedback would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks.

applefan08, Welcome to the discussion area!
To continue to use the AirPort Express (AX) to give Internet access to the iMac G3, you will need to configure the 2 devices to use WDS to wirelessly connect. The instructions start on Page 41 in "Designing AirPort Extreme 802.11n Networks" (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPortExtreme802.11nNetworks.pdf).

  • Trouble with Airport Extreme and Time Capsule

Just got a new 2TB time capsule and added it to my network (existing Airport Express and Airport Extreme).  All devices are hard-wire back-hauled to Linksys router.  Set up was straight forward with no issues and initiated a time capsule back up without a problem.  Within hours I noticed that the TC was no longer reachable in Finder.. Opening the AirPort utility, I saw that both the Extreme and the TC were "lost".  Still had (green) internet connectivity, but the base stations were showing as off-line in the Airport utility.
Tried rebooting and checking from multiple other devices and no luck.  Occasionally will find them both on-line in Airport utility, but seem to lose one (usually TC) after a short period.  All are running the most up to date version of firmware (7.7.3).  Prior to installing the TC, I had experienced 0 issues with Airport Express and Extreme.
Has anyone else seen similar issues?  Are there settings that need to be accounted for in some way to avoid these frustrating "lost devices"?
    thanks

Thank you for your quick answer, smorkerz. However, I did it and it doesn't work.
I tried to check separately the time capsule and the airport extreme, switching one off when using the other one. The result is that each one works alone but when I use them both, just time capsule appears, works well, and I can't use the airport to print for instance.
    Do you understand anything ?

  • Help With Airport Extreme and External Hard Drive

I just purchased the Airport Extreme and I couldn't have been happier. I have attached my western digital external hard drive, but I have run into a slight problem/dilemma which I'm hoping someone who is apple savvy can help me out.
I live in a house with a couple of other guys and so I put all of my movies and media onto the hard drive so we can stream it throughout the house, but how do I make sure that someone won't accidently delete the files (The copies on the hard drive are the only ones I have)? I have tried to right click "get info" and change the sharing & permissions properties on the folders that I don't want deleted, but it doesn't save the changes or even allow me to select another option other than Read & Write. I formated the hard drive with the disk utility before I connected it to the AirPort so I know that it has nothing to do with the format of the drive. I also tried to create different user accounts for each roomate so that they could view the files (Read Only) but I get an error message explaining that if I continue, the contents of the hard drive will not be accessible. I'm sure its something simple but I'm obviously missing it.
    Thanks!

Airport Utility under Disks/File Sharing has guest access rights.

  • Problem with Airport extreme and Time machine

I recently purchased a 320gig external hard drive for Time machine. I connected it to my Airport extreme but it is not being recognized for some unknown reason. If I directly connect it to my iMac it works perfectly. I've updated with the latest firmware and it should work via USB with Airport extreme. Any suggestions why it is not working?

I have used the following for about two years.
-MBP, Airport Extreme, External HD (1TB) for my time machine.
You probably know, that's "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See the Using Time Machine with a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
To get around this issue, I have switched off the Time Machine, and am only turning on once a week or so, to grab any changes or additions I've made. I've been doing this for about 6 months now with no problems.
Now whenever I do this, (It should only be backing up an album or two from iTunes,) it tries to back up my whole system again. EVERY TIME. It did not do this before.
If you go too long between backups, Time Machine will do a new, full backup. And once it decides to do that, it will keep trying until it succeeds. There are some other possibilities as well. See #D2 in the Using Time Machine with a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If none of those seem to explain it, see #A1 there; download the TM Buddy widget, copy and post the messages here.
Why are you only backing-up once a week? Time Machine was designed to back up changes hourly, as long as your Mac is awake and the TC is in range. It will protect you best that way, and unless there's a problem, those backups will usually be very quick.
But if you're only going to back up once a week or so, then Time Machine is not the best app for you. See Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product.

If you use ethernet to connect the AE and TC .. you must NOT extend wifi.. you use Create a wireless network. And setup with same name and security. You are using roaming network.. not extended wireless.. if you want to use extended wireless no ethernet

  • Problems with AirPort Extreme and connecting to personal ftp

    Hi all
I seem to be having a problem with connecting to my personal server outside of my network. When I connect using a static IP within my network(192.168.1.x) I can connect fine using my Mac and PC so I've ruled out improper server settings. I've mapped a port (21) to the same static IP as my server, but I cannot connect. I am prompted with "An FTP Connection to "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection" I think I've toggled every option in the Airport Utility but nothing seems to work. Has anybody been successful in making this work?
    Thanks for any help offered

OK, thanks for the info, which really helps.
Your AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode, so the IP addresses that your devices need are being assigned by the Cradelpoint router, not the AirPort Extreme.
Either the Cradlepoint router is not allowing more than 3 devices to connect, or it is your service provider that is limiting the number of devices that can connect....probably because of very limited bandwidth.
I'm not sure whether you want to try to contact support at Cradlepoint or your service provider to try to find out who is actually responsible for the maximum number of connections allowed, since they will likely each blame the other for the problem.
The workaround...if you want to try it, since it bends networking rules a bit....is to configure the AirPort Extreme as a router, not a bridge.
The upside to this is that all of your devices will be able to connect and get a valid IP address.
One downside is that this will introduce what is known as a Double NAT error on the network, but that is rarely serious on a home network, and Apple does provide you with the option to "ignore" the error, so you get a nice green light on the AirPorts.
Another downside may be....depending on the bandwidth that your service provides....that your connection is really slow....as in dial up speed slow....when you have a number of devices all connected to the network simultaneously, since they will all share the available bandwidth is provided.
I never had any problems in the past with wireless connections when I configured the AirPort as the router. But I also was very careful to avoid downloading large files using the Cradlepoint connection since the bandwidth was quite limited.
Not sure how you want to proceed.
We can tell you how to configure the AirPort as the router in this type of setup if you will let us know what operating system you used to configure the AirPorts, but we cannot guarantee that things will work for you if you try it.

  • Issue with Airport Extreme and 100mbps connection

    Hi,
I have just upgraded my connection to 100mbps. Using a ARRIS TM 502G cable modem and the Airport Extreme I am able to get the 100mbps connection via either ethernet or wifi on my main MacBook Pro. However, the Mac Mini in the loungeroom (10 metres away from the Airport Extreme) is only getting speeds of around 25mbps.
Does anyone know why this might be or what I can do to resolve it?
    Thanks,
    Matt

The Mini was connecting at 20 - 25mbps via wifi.
The Macbook Pro was connecting at 80 - 90mbps via wifi (when in same room as Airport Extreme) and getting anywhere from 80 to 140mbps via a wired connection.
I've moved the Airport Extreme so it has the best "line of sight" to the Mini, and also disconnected a cordless phone I had in the room which was interfering with the signal.
After these changes I'm able to get speeds of 30 - 45mbps on the mini and similar speeds on my macbook if I move it next to the mini. It looks as though that's the best I'm going to be able to get without hard wiring the mini - which is disappointing ... unless of course you clever people have any other ideas?

  • Extend range with Airport Extreme and D-Link DI-614?

Can I use an Airport Extreme and a D-Link DI-614 wireless router to extend the range of my network? If so, which router should be the main base station, and which should be the relay station?

...does anyone know the cheapest way to extend a wireless network?
Ethernet cable. Run an Ethernet cable between the 2 devices.

  • Will Airport Extreme extend Belkin router network

I have recently had my network based on a wired D-Link router wired to Airport Extreme and it has worked fine. I have replaced the router with a Belkin Wireless router. Can I use Belkin as hub of network and use the Extreme to extend the network by placing it further down the house and then an express at the far end of the house to use airtunes. I have tried to do this with no luck. Is it possible and how do you do it.
I would really appreciate some assistance.
    Thanks
    Patrick

Possibly if you have either the Belkin F5D7230-4 or F5D7231 model ... as these are the only Belkins that are known to be WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.

  • Can't Setup WDS with Airport Extreme "N" and Airport Extreme "G" & Express

    Hi!
I'm trying my best and have done this stuff with the last model Airport Extreme "G" models, but cannot get my new "N" model to setup WDS. I log in to the new Airport and start configuring, it gives me the option to setup WDS, but it doesn't detect the Airport Extreme "G" model nor the Airport Express I have. The only way I can get them to be recognized is to configure them all identically with the same network name, password, etc. and have each hard-wired into an ethernet plug. Sort of defeats the point of going wireless. In the new Airport Utility, how do I get it to recognize the remote base stations? In the old Tiger Airport Utility, it used to configure the other airports for you. The Leopard one doesn't seem to do that. Any help?
    Thanks in advance!
    Corey

OK-so after more than a month of having to put up with my Airport Utility popping up whenever I started my computer or came home and joined the network, I finally had the time to sit on hold with Apple and work with a Network Specialist--had to get the ticket "Escalated" first. What the problem turned out being was I set up the Extreme "N" o use WEP (Transitional Security Network) because I occasionally have friends with older PCs coming by that need old WEP instead of WPA. The net specialist helped me walk through the whole setup (from scratch) with the Extreme "N" as my main base station (like I wanted) setup using WPA/WPA2 Personal for password encryption. The older Airport Extreme "G" and the Airport Express do NOT support the WEP (TSN) mode, so they couldn't join the network properly--thus the constant error from the Extreme "N" that no WDS base stations could be found.
Hope this info helps people in the future! I haven't seen anything around that says Extreme "G" and Express don't support this newer Transitional mode. Even the ever-so-helpful Apple Tech didn't know why that new Transitional mode was invented.
    Thanks for the reply, dhanneman.
