Setting up a WRT54GS v6 on Suse Linux 10.0 - stumped

Here's the sillyness - I can get the 198.162.1.1 browser configuration thingy to do its stuff, when I plug the ethernet card into the ethernet port - obvious right
Except, (by the way my hosue mate bought this thing, without consulting me, so i'm in the deep end with it) the salesperson, has said that you got to plug this ethernet card to the internet port (...), because the 'broadband router' has to be plugged into a modem - except, and here's the punchline, my modem is a speedtouch 330 usb *sob*.
So, you hook up the interent plug with the ethernet cable and.. /etc/init.d/network start and.. oh it doesn't get an ip address on the go. shocking. I've already half killed my self setting that thing up, so any help on this problem would make you a saintified being in my eyes

That does not work. You cannot use a USB modem with a Linksys router.
The setup has to be: modem connects to the internet port of the router, computers connect to LAN ports of the router. Obviously that is not possible when you have a USB modem.
If you have to use the USB modem than you must connect a computer to the modem. First, that computer is directly connected to the internet. Any function of the router like the firewall or NAT does not apply to that computer. You must carefully protect the computer as it is completely exposed to the internet and the gateway to your LAN. Also you are not able to connect to any computers that you will later connect to the router LAN if you go through its internet/WAN port.
So if you connect the USB modem to a computer and want to use the router, the computer must be setup as bridge or gateway, depending on your ISP. You can use it as simple bridge (i.e. it just forwards packets from the ethernet card to the USB modem and vice versa) if your ISP allows multiple connections at a time. If not, you must set it up as gateway (thus, in the end you have to replicate exactly what the router is also doing...), i.e. the computer connects to the internet and you use what is called "Internet Sharing" on windows. The computer creates a LAN on with your ethernet card. It does address translation. between private LAN addresses and the WAN address from your ISP. Please note that this creates a second LAN different from the one that the router does. Again, look for something called internet sharing to use a internet connection of one computers on other computers connected to a LAN.
It would probably be easier, if you would not even use the WRT as router at all. Just setup an internet sharing network using only the LAN switch ports of the WRT (turn off the DHCP server of the WRT). That way the WRT acts as wireless bridge but does nothing else.
My suggestion would be: get a ethernet modem where you connect via ethernet. That setup is much simpler and all computers run in the router LAN while the router does firewall, NAT etc...

    OK, I have tested about all I care to at this point.  I have a g3 connection on Linux using the Pantech UML290 from Verizon.
    Open SuSE 11.3
    Kernel Linux 2.6.34.7-0.7 desktop
    Gnome 2.30.0  (using LXDE)
    QInternet for connections
    Modem installed as /dev/ttyACM0
    Tone Dial, Speaker Off, Detect Tone Dial Off
    Details (default settings)
      Buad Rate - 480000000
      Init 1 - ATZ
      Init 2 - AT Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 & C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    Enable Device Control Via Qinternet
    Provider information:
       Name: vzw4g #777
       Phone Number: #777
       User Name: [email protected]
       Password: vzw
    Manual (defaults for all of the rest of the settings)
     #777 provided the quickest (almost instant) connection to the carrier.  *99# & *99***3# also worked, but after a 60 second or longer wait.
    The primary reason for the successful 3g connection seems to be the use of the Pantech Tool posted by Toughbook (linked here) at the Verizon forum.  This process is all done under windows.  Be advised, if you have the tool "read" your device, you must write, even if you made no changes.  If you don't it won't work under the VZAccess Manager.
      The default settings (AT+CGDCONT?) on your UML290 should be:
    +CGDCONT: 1,"IPV6","vzwims","0:0:0:0:0:0:0:0",0,0
    +CGDCONT: 3,"IPV4V6","vzwinternet","0.0.0.0",0,0

      It seems that the modem might connect directly under SuSE Linux without any complications using the modem configurations and provider information above.  I am in a 3g area right now (4g is support to be here this summer) and when I try to connect with the unit straight out of the box, everything connected, but it found no carrier.  I'll know more once 4g is in our area.  There were a couple of other posts mentioning a direct hook up in Fedora.  I could not find any direct posts confirming that, but I am guessing this is the case.
      Willzzz suggested various options and tests (here post #12) on the Ubuntu forum.  I set up and tried all.  The test was to see if I could force the APN to see the 3g system under the 4g settings (out of the box, without the Pantech Tool alteration).  I was not successful with any.  I tried using all three of the AT+CGDCONT versions above in the Init3 setting.  Phone numbers of *99#, *99***3#, and #777. Even though both options (within the init string & in the dial-up number) are supposed to change the APN, neither worked for me.
    Many of these items have been discussed before in various posts in this forum.  I don't claim credit for anything, but trying various options.  Thanks to Neander, Willzzz88, Irieblue and Toughbook, among the others that added to those posts.  The reason for the detail in this post is simply to document what I tried, what worked and what didn't hoping it might help others connect.  Thank you all for your expertise on this forum.

  • How to set and static ip_address for a Suse Linux box

    Hi.
    I've done the following to set an static ip address for my Suse 9 Linux box:
    - Take not of inet address value from ifconfig command. ie: (172.17.2.14)
    - Change this value in /etc/hosts for my linux box.
    Since Suse is configure by default to use DHCP for assigning dinamic ip_addresses i'm not sure whether will lastly be set as a static address. I've rebooted my box and it seems to be OK.

    /etc/hosts is not configuration file for ethernet interfaces.
    Configuration files for ethernet interfaces are stored in /etc/sysconfig/network directory.
    For example if you have eth0 device then configuretion for this device is stored in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file.
    Important directives:
    DEVICE - interface (eth0)
    IPADDR - IP address of interface
    NETMASK - netmask
    BOOTPROTO - "static" for static configuration, dhcp for dynamic configuration via dhcp
    ONBOOT - activating interface during boot (yes/no) (yes - of course :-) )
    GATEWAY - default gateway
    So for example you want setup static IP (192.168.10.1 / 255.255.225.0) for eth0 interface.
    Edit the /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file and your configuration should be:
    DEVICE=eth0
    IPADDR=192.168.10.1
    NETMASK=255.255.255.0
    BOOTPROTO=static
    ONBOOT=yesThen you simply restart the nework using:
    /etc/init.d/network restartOR
    /sbin/ifdown eth0
    /sbinf/ifup eth0 OR
    ifconfig eth0 down
    ifconfig eth0 up

  • SUSE Linux and Windows XP behind WRT54GS

    Hi, I have SUSE Linux 10 and Windows XP SP2 behind WRT54GS. I want to use the Linux host as a web server and the Windows host as a client. I don't need outside access to the Linux host. I just need the Windows client to run Firefox and access the Linux host. I've tried various setups but no access to the Linux webserver works. Ping from Windows to the Linux host works. Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks. Warren

    I don't know a whole lot about Linux, but if you can ping the IP address, then it's probably not the fault of the router.  It's either in the configuration of your server, or how you are trying to get to the server.
    One thing to make sure is that everyone is in the same workgroup or domain (including the router).  Also, what do you type in the address bar, the server name, or IP address?  If you are using the server name or a domain name (like home.com), it might be a DNS issue.  You might have to put a manual entry in your localhosts file on your Windows box.

    I tried to search the solution over the internet for this kind of problem, but i am not able to find its solution. Even i tried to start the Orale installation using this parameter: ./runInstaller ignoreSysPrereqs, but still it is giving the same unexpected error.
    I have a doubt on File/Directory permissions which are created for Installation in /tmp. The umask setiing of the system is 0022.
    Please, help me for this issue.

  • C++ - JNI on a SuSe Linux - Can't seem to find my Java files

    Hi all,
    I have been playing around with the JNI for a bit now on my windows box and got it working fine and all :) Now, however, I need to port my stuff to a SuSe linux, and I have started out really basic - just trying to start the JVM too see how that went... badly, would be the answer to that question, in case you were wondering.
    I made a really simple textbook example (alot of those, when searching this forum - and searched, I have) to just create myself a JVM. I am not even daring to actually try and find any classes, call methods or anything as bold as that yet.
    My example compiles fine, but when I run the program I get this error message:
    "Can't find class java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError. Invalid class path ?"
    Now, please note, this is not the actual NoClassDefFoundError exception being thrown here, but looks to me as if the system wanted to throw that exception object, but couldn't even find the object to throw at me ;-)
    This leads me to believe that there's is something really basic wrong with my Java setup here. I can run "java" just fine from the commandline, but it occurs to me, that the JVM, when invoked via the JNI, can't find it's own stuff.
    Any suggestion what needs to be done here?
    I can post code if that helps, but I doubt that is the problem - as it is really textbook stuff and I can get this stuff to work on Windows. I think the problem is "external" to my code, as it happens before I even try to use the JVM. Maybe some env vars needs to be set? I have manually tried to export a CLASSPATH variable, just to see if that helped - I even tried adding full path to core.jar in my "-Djava.class.path" property ;-)
    I have tried removing and adding the Java RPM's again (Java version 1.4.1 FYI) to no avail aswell.

    As you hv started working on JNI. You must know the following things.
    1. If you want to work on Windows they must hv to hv a .dll file of your c/C++ program while on linux you should have .so file. i.e. shared object file.
    2. On Linux you should set LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to your the path where you have stored your .so file.
    Let me know if you do have above things and still getting error.

  • Problem with installing Oracle 10g on Suse Linux

    I downloaded Oracle 10g Express from this url:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/xe/htdocs/102xelinsoft.html
    it is free version for developers.
    I copied it into computer where was installed Suse Linux Enterprise Edition.
    But when I run it shows this kind of error:
    error: rpmReadSignature failed: region failed: BAD, tag 15872 type 2047 offset 20480 count 4096
    error: oracle-xe-univ-10.2.0.1-1.i386.rpm cannot be installed
    It was downloaded without any problem. But checksum is different from that shown on website. I think this is the problem.
    What is the problem? Does anybody know answer?

    I have not had a problem when the check sum matched. Therefore I encourage you to download again.

  • Installation of Oracle EBusiness Suite 11i Release 10.2 on Suse Linux 9

    I have been going thru this forum and got some great tips but am still having problems installing it on Suse Linux Enterprise 9. The reason for failure is at 20% - adrun9i.sh script. Initially it was giving me error while unzipping the files, now it passes that step but gives error while configuring db. I am not sure what the problem is. I have set all the possible kernel parameters. Any help is appreciated?

    I had the same issue, though I cant remember the percentage anymore, but it was whilst on Database Disk 2.
    What I found out was that the DVD in which that zipXX file was had a CRC error, and the size of the .dbf (I think it was a xxxtx.dbf file) was smaller than expected, cos I manually unzipped this file during a rerun of the installation which finally succeeded. Unfortunately, the DB srung the error after I tried forcing it to mount and open.
    I have now installed the same on SLES9, after I downloaded a fresh set of files from edelivery.oracle.com ( Its a nightmare if you have a slow broadband - Lasted me about 2 weeks, using a download manager)

    Hi PPL, just reporting success and performance inscrease under Suse Linux 8.0:
    I can say that Oracle 9iAS under Linux for me performs at least 25-30% faster than Windows. I've installed IAS and INFRA in only one machine:
    Pentium 4 1.8Ghz
    1 GB RAM
    1 SCSI 15kRPM IB DISK
    Adaptec Ultra 160 controller
    2 GB SWAP
    I use PORTAL, FORMS, REPORTS and WIRELESS... I've installed the BUNDLED INTER-OPERABILITY PATCH Version of 9iAS r2, so i did not had to apply that patch. I've just applied today one CORE patch that was released in September for Linux/Unix versions and yesterday for Windows versions (patch 2542920)
    I've used SUSE 8.0, installed the Korn Shell package (KSH) and followed instruction on this VERY USEFULL whitepaper at htis site : www.stute.net !
    Remember to change SHMMAX parameters for the kernel as explained in www.puschitz.com !
    My last installation was made in 3 hours (SUSE installation included)
    Other tricks was i had to execute: xhost + as root to let oracle set DISPLAY and runInstaller! The linking errors were easily solved as explained in www.stute.net whitepaper.
    I've created a script to startup the INFRA database, but i couldnt start up automatically all services (OC4J's, HTTP, WEBCACHE), so i start them manually in OEM site http://mysite:1810
    I'm not a Linux GURU, but now i feels satisfied with performance and with stability.
    More... in Linux i can compile my FORMS files (FMX) even when they are used by someone user in a forms session.
    And even better is that PATCHS for Linux/Solaris usually are on "street" 1 month before Windows versions.
    Of course, I go crazy everytime i found bugs, but usually they are not plataform related.

    I installed on SUSE Linux 8.0 the 9iAS R2, only the option A - J2EE and WebChache. Now I have following problems.
    1. Some configuration tools (OC4J, OPMN, DCM)were not initialized in the end of the installation. I read other postings with the same problems, but i never read a solution of these problems.
    2. After installation, i want to start the http server manually (dctml start -ct ohs) , but it doesn't work. I got the error message ADMN 100999, i dont know why !
    If i want to start the http-server with enterprise manager (EM worked partically) I got an EMException.

  • Installation of SJSAS 8 freezes on Suse Linux 9.1

    I am trying to install the Sun Java Application Server 8 on my Suse Linux 9.1 System. I have the Sun JDK 1.4.2_05 installed and the JAVA_HOME variable set to the right directory.
    When I am starting the downloaded installation file as root, the GUI guides me through the licene agreement, the installation directory selection (/opt/SUNWappserver) and JDK selection (/usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_05).
    After this step the installer just freezes. Nothing happens any more - the only thing I can do is aborting on the console with Ctrl+c.
    The same thing happens when I try using the non-GUI installing process - at the same step. Even using another JDK - I tried 1.4.1 - leads to the same result.
    Referring to the topic of eric.r.turner in this forum ("Installing J2EESDK 1.4 on Slackware 9.1 and Current Freezes"), I checked the /var/tmp/ directory and found no productregistry files.
    Does anybody has an idea what I can try else?

    Supplement:
    I tried the workaround specified in Bug ID: 4978327, unziping the bin-file and starting
    /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_05/bin/java -cp .:package/PackageFormat.jar -Xmx256m appserv -nodisplay It did not work (though the opposite is presumed at the end of the bug description).

    I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 on Suse Linux 7.0 (with glibc 2.1.3).

    When trying to link the Oracle components, the installer produces:
    "Error in invoking target utilities of makefile /opt/oracle/product/8.1.7/rdbms/lib/ins_rdbms.mk"
    After installation is finished, some Oracle utilities can't be started.
    E.g., svrmgrl fails and I can't create a database instance.
    What's going wrong here? I tried to reinstall Oracle several times, but this
    behaviour is reproducible. Yes, I unset LANG, and set all necessary environment
    variables. Any ideas would be really helpful!

    Hi:
    I am experiencing the same problem. I followed the installation instructions to the dot, but found that the universal installer (UI) (java based) fails at the very beginning.
    I'm still trying to install. However, as per the installation instructions, I didn't install Java. So the UI is only running on the runtime version that comes with the CD.
    If I make any progress these days, I will post the solution...

  • Oracle 8.0.5 & SUSE Linux 6.0

    I am attempting to install Oracle 8.0.5 on SuSE 6.0 Linux but
    receive the following error messages:
    When running oratabs.sh - "GROUPS: read only variable"
    When running orainst - "Permission Denied"
    I have no patches installed on SuSE - do I need any? If so what
    and where are they?
    I would realy appreciate some help as I am not a Linux expert.

    Hi Markus,
    I don't know what exactly getImportedKeys/getExportedKeys do.
    I suppose it's some kind of select on the data dictionary views.
    The reason for the slow performance could be miss-configuration
    of Oracle or a very large number of objects (say more than 20000
    tables).
    I could advice that you check there's nothing else in the SYSTEM
    tablespace than the data dictionary.
    U could use:
    select * from dba_segments where OWNER not in ('SYS','SYSTEM')
    and TABLESPACE_NAME = 'SYSTEM';
    I could recomend that you set shared_pool_size to 100MBytes, and
    db_block_buffers*db_block_size to 100MB.

    The oracle Universal Installer does't proceed with installation after displaying the following messages on screen. Has anbody been sucessful in installing 8.1.7 rel 3 on Suse Linux 7.2? Please help. Any hints and tips much appreciated.

    Got a solution.....from somebody back in 1999....
    log in as any user then follow these instructions:
    su root
    [password]
    export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
    xhost +localhost
    su oracle
    unset LANG
    unset LC_CTYPE
    unset RC_TYPE
    ./runInstaller
    The installer should be up and running now.
    any ideas for setting the display correctly. Only one machine involved.

  • Urgent: Plugin for Apache on SuSE Linux

    I am trying to install weblogic Plug-In for Apache 1.3.22 on SuSE linux. I installed
    apache, got the mod_wl.so from weblogic6.1/lib/linux folder. No problems in installing.
    It added
    'LoadModule weblogic_module libexec/mod_wl.so'
    I noticed that it did not add
    'AddModule mod_weblogic.c'.
    Anyway I tried running ./apachectl configtest and I get follwing error message:
    Cannot load /usr/local/apache/libexec/mod_wl.so into server: /usr/local/apache/libexec/mod_wl.so:
    ELF file data encoding not big-endian
    I added the line 'AddModule mod_weblogic.c', but I still get the same error. What
    is going on. Please help immediately. This is extremely urgent.

    You can directly update configuration files, and at least restart the listnener.
    %ORACLE_HOME%\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora
    (HOST = 1st_host_Physical_name)
    %ORACLE_HOME%\NETWORK\ADMIN\sqlnet.ora
    (HOST = 1st_host_Physical_name)
    Also make sure that if instance parameter "local_listener" is set it is using physical hostname.
