Setting up Adobe Premiere in a lab environment

Hi All,
Like many, I'm moving my school's lab from Final Cut Pro to Adobe Production Suite. One looming question: Can I have multiple stations (six) working on a networked system? I'm worried the answer is "No" given my limited bit of research on the matter. Not good if this is the case!
Thanks for any details!
-Justin

If you are referring to using an XSan media server setup with Premiere, the best information I have
came from from Mitch Wood, Senior Solutions Engineer at Adobe Systems on 7/14/11.
"The bad news is that our XSan testing has been pretty limited. Most of the information that we know about it has come indirectly from customers. In short, it works with Premiere Pro. I'm certain that there are some caveats around configuration and usage (as there is with any network storage), but the details of that are largely unknown. The good news is that next week we'll be installing an XSan in our compatibility lab so we'll have much better information about its use soon. We have some very large customers that need to use their existing XSan storage with Premiere Pro, so we are definitely motivated to make sure it's compatible. So much so, that we intend to demonstrate a Premiere Pro / XSan workflow at IBC this year.
The bottom line is this - although we don't know much detail about XSan and Premiere Pro integration now, we will shortly and it's our intention to make certain that it works well."
Cheers,

  • Instructions to Tech Svs Dept in setting up Adobe Premiere in school firewall setting?

Hi.  I work in a public high school in a very large school system.  While I have new computers w/8gb of ram and decent video and audio cards, our Adobe Premiere 9.0 software frequently stalls, freezes, won't open projects, etc. . . .  The problems are not consistent from computer to computer.  In fact, the software runs beautifully from my "stand alone" laptop (which I installed myself using your recommended install procedure and the original DVDs.)  Which leads me to believe that our network firewalls are getting in the way of Adobe Premiere functioning properly.
We operate in a Windows XP 5.1 environment.  (I know!)  Our tech services folks take a copy of the original DVDs that we purchased (35 licenses), and load it onto a folder within an external flash drive that they've labeled as the image for my classroom.  That is how they install the software - all the software - for the computers in my room.  Never from original DVDs.
And, our Tech Svs staff told me that they read a service bulletin from Adobe that said if you have the Adobe CS4 or 5 web design suite installed on your computers, it will cause your Adobe Premiere Elements not to function properly!!!  I'm having a hard time swallowing that one.
So, there is something between how they copied this software onto their flash drives, to the network firewalls, that is causing headaches with the functioning of this software on networked computer stations.
I have also seen other forums where this problem occurs in other educational settings.
Education provides a pretty big customer base for you.  Have you developed a set of instructions specific to this environment for the installation of the software by the Tech staff?  If you would like, I'd be glad to volunteer my school and situation as a place you can come to troubleshoot and develop these instructions.
My only current solution is to tell students to render and save frequently (like, after every single thing they do.)  If their station misbehaves too terribly, we transfer the work to my laptop - and they do the work there.  But I have only one laptop.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}We are on a network - but we do have access to save to the C drive.  Students have a folder on the C drive where they save all project assets and work.
Being on a network is fine (especially since you don't have a choice ), but using network drives is not. As John mentioned, *everything* PRE is doing should be using local, physical drives (at least 7200 RPM). Preferably one drive for projects and media storage, and another for temp files (and, no, partitions do not count because they are the same physical drive).
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}Are you saying that if they are multi-tasking, it could cause software burps?
I think a rule of thumb with editing is: the less running the better. But some processes seem to interfere much more with editing than others: virus scanning software and indexing are the biggest culprits I can think of. So if you have Word, for example, running at the same time that's fine, but if Norton is running or, God forbid doing a scan, that's more likely to cause issues.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}Should they transfer all assets from a flash drive (pictures, music, etc. . .) into the project directory - and make sure they are not using any other programs while they are editing? Would this work if we are still tied to the network?
I think the above should answer... let me know if not.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}We cannot boot the computers without accessing the network, because if we could be "independent" (of the security features of the network) then my students might turn into deviants and mess up the settings on the computer or release viruses or do a multitude of other evil things.  So I've been told.
Well, I.T. has many reasons why they do things they do, but (as you might have suspected) your user experience is not Reason #1. But in any event, logging in and being on the network - in and of itself - shouldn't present any issues so no worries there.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}And, we just received 1 set of DVDs - but our license number is good for 35 stations - so using the same serial number should not be the issue (we do the same thing for our Web Design suite, and that has had no problems.)
Well, good, that should be one thing to cross off the list, then.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}I have complained to Tech Services and unfortunately, the problems never seem to replicate when they come in after school to do the work.  They are the ones who told me they read the adobe service bulletin that states Web Design CS4 interferes with the operation of Adobe Premiere Elements 9.0.  But, the students aren't working with the CS4 software when they are doing their video projects.  So - that has been the extent of their research, as far as I can tell.
Yeah, isn't that always the way? Just like when I take my car to the mechanic and tell them it's making this weird noise, and of course they drive it and it's fine and they think I'm drunk or something. Unfortunately, software is even harder to diagnose, and if the problem can't be replicated it can be pretty hard to fix.
Is the tech bulletin saying that CS4 and PRE9 need to running together to cause problems, or can the mere fact that CS4 is *installed* cause PRE9 problems? Either way, it the "tech bulletin" theory held water, you would think it'd be fairly easy to replicate. Also, if that was the issue, why does it run fine after school?
Can you get tech services to come in during one of the classes and see the problems first-hand? If nothing else, maybe they might be able to appreciate how frustrating the problems are and take a more proactive approach.
ETA: I don't know what that "function(){return A....." code stuff is, but it's not me typing that in

  • Problem: Sequence setting for adobe premiere pro CS 5.5

I'm using Adobe Pr to edit my video. When I import the video (details as below) to pr, it does not have any image (got sound only)
I'm very confuse about the sequence setting. I'm still new in using adobe software.
Which sequence should be suitable for my video editing?
    Camera : Canon EOS 70D
    Frame size : 1280 x 720
    Frame Rate : 50 frame / second

Does the video play in the Project Window (as shown below) or Source Monitor?
Is there a videofile (apart from the audio part) in the timeline. Does it show black or is the videotrack empty. Has the video track been targeted?
To get a matching sequence for your files do this:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro cs5 has eaten a free space on the hard drive!

The initial video file was about 1Gb, I needed to cut it and add audio to it. I tried exporting with DV PAL encoding, there was about 15Gb of free space on the hard drive. It took a long time to export and somewhere at 90% it showed the message that free space on the drive was out. I closed Premiere, the target directory where encoded AVI should be exported was empty. The search by name doesn't find anything. Disk cleanup freed only 5Gb. Could you please tell me what the directory where Premiere store a temporary files while Encoding Sequence.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Hello, I have a very similar problem.  A few days ago I was alarmed to see all of a sudden my Main Hard Drive full.
The editing station that I'm working on is a new computer and all media and scratch disks are assigned to a project folder on another hard drive.
I started digging through the main drive to find what is loading the drive and realized that Media Cache files folder has over 30 Gigabytes of data in it!
In the Adobe Premiere Media Settings there is an option to redirect the Cache files or Save them next to originals check box (Which I selected).
This brings me to very important questions:
What is the correct process of setting up Adobe Premiere project so there are no temporary, cache, pre-renders.... clog up the main drive or get scattered elsewhere? It would be very preferable to keep everything in one project folder.
Should I redirect or keep the files with originals?
Besides Scratch disks and Media Cache files are there any other files generated by the program?   If there is, where can I find them?
Once I complete my project and want to completely delete it from my computer, what is the correct way of removing everything so nothing is left over from the deleted project?
Answers to these questions are very important for me and I would be very grateful to get answers to them :-)

  • Final Cut Pro 7 keyboard shortcuts for Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for Windows

Attached is the file that contains the Final Cut Pro 7 keyboard shortcut set for Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for Windows.
This file was mistakenly left out of the Premiere Pro CS5 installer, so people who tried to switch to this keyboard shortcut set were unable to do so.
Unzip the file and then install the .kys file by copying it here:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS5\Keyboard Shortcuts\en_US
(where C:\ may be replaced by the a different volume if you installed somewhere other than the C drive, and en_US may be replaced by another locale ID)
This file was included in the Premiere Pro CS5.5 installer, so manually installing this file is only necessary for Premiere Pro CS5.
For information about keyboard shortcuts, including how to customize them, see this page:
    "Keyboard shortcuts"

By the way, Mac users don't need to update this file, it's for Windows users only.

  • Adobe premiere cs3 and youtube

    Hi Everyone,
Please give me some input on how I can use adobe premiere cs3 to create videos for youtube.... specifically... the videos that I will be working on will contain all of the same basic elements...
    1. Still Images and Clip art only... no moving video... I want help with uploading the stills/clip art and also with timing who long each still with stay up individually....
    2. Speech bubbles (the kind used in comic strips) timed to pop in above above the heads of those people or characters in the stills and clip art... I want help with timing when the bubbles come in and with creating them and saving them so that in future videos i won't have to create them again...
    3. Voice over parts done by me to read the parts in the bubbles timed for comic effect... I want help with steps on how to do this...
    4. Music added throughout the video just below my voice overs... same as above...
All of my videos will contain these elements... and I want to find an efficient way to set up adobe premiere the first time so that every time I go in to do my youtube videos in the future it will be just a matter of uploading the stills setting a time duration each still and the speach bubbles... reading the voice over, adding the music and then uploading it to youtube... I am new to the software and would appreciate any steps that could be give to help me accomplish these four goals...
    Thanks,
    John

the music you liked was made by chris duncan (who comes to forums but has been busy so hasnt been around lately ).. called " when goblins frolick " ...perfect title for the music.
probably should move this discussion to the lounge area cause it sorta has to do with learning some aspects of programs in general and certain techniques etc.. not really about cs3 and youtube per se...
but anyway..moderators will do that if they want to...
it is a little difficult at first to use photoshop to do what you want, and to use masks in cs3 or just fade graphics in and out and make them appear when wanted..move around etc...and also text issues ( sizes that show up OK on screen are usually pretty large ( pt ). But you'll find when you get past the initial learning part it will open up all sorts of very cool opportunity.. and freedom to do what you imagine...
AE is also used for animation stuff but I dont use AE myself...
if you search for animation tutorials using text baloons you may find some good one that walks you through the process...and maybe even you can find samples of things to download and experiment with on your computer.
my advice is to go ahead and learn what you can and do your own graphics etc .. cause that will open up all kinds of cool things for you to do .. not only in animation things but other things too ...
    good luck !
local library might have a good book on animation stuff using adobe products ( versions you have).. can usually search local libraries with computer at home...

  • Importing Adobe Premiere m2v's w/chapter markers into DVDSP?

Working on a project where the m2v files are being created by someone else using Adobe Premiere 2.0 on a PC. (They're creating the chapter markers within Premiere)
In my initial tests, I'm able to get the video and audio files (m2v, ac3) into DVDSP, but not chapter markers.
Does anyone have experience with this kind of situation?
Is there an export setting in Adobe Premiere that would help?
An import setting in DVDSP that would help?
Is it possible to import Adobe Premiere created m2v's into DVDSP with chapter markers?
    Thanks.
    G5 - Dual 2GHz Processor   Mac OS X (10.3.6)

the meta data that premiere stores its chapter marker info is not compatible with dvdsp. That being the case, you could have your friend give you a text document with the timecodes for the chapter markers in a column, each timecode followed by the chapter name if you want something other than the standard "chapter 1, chapter 2" etc.
Because your friend chose the chapter markers in premiere, when the m2v was encoded, the apropriate I-Frames were placed so that in DVDSP you should have no problem placing a chapter marker at the exact timecode your friend specifies.
    hope that helps

  • Setting up a Service Manager Lab environment with prod. data

    Hi
I´m about to set up a lab environment with production data. I´m following the guide here;  https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj900180.aspx
I have a question regarding the Management Group. The Lab environment will have the same Management group name. In the guide nothing is mentioned about changing the name of the management group.
Will this be a problem when i fire up the Lab environment?
    /Regards

Well in the guide https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj900180.aspx states that you should
install a secondary management server and stop the services, backup prod. db, restore prod db on the secondary server (lab-server), change  a bunch of rows in different tables.
So naturally it will have the same management
    group name.
    Am i missing something?

  • Wrong settings when create a sequence from an AVCHD (.mts) file from canon xa20. Adobe premiere sets as AVC-intra 100 1080i

I don't know why Adobe premiere CC automatically adjust an .mts file from my canon XA20 (AVCHD based on h264 1920x1080 25p) like an AVC-intra 100 1080i. While editing it appears crispy and noisy. Im editing in a windows 7 64 bits plattform. Must I install de properly codec on my machine ¿?
    Any suggestion ¿?

Yes it does that. AVCintra is just a name for a preset. Set the preview codec to i frame mpeg only
And no, dont install any codec.
You can alsway select a AVCHD preset from the list.

With versions earlier than 11, there is no more Sign In. If you get any message to that effect, ignore and cancel out of them. You should be able to move forward to your import, editing, and exports using the program nonetheless.
As for the disc menus, those marked photoshop.com plus members only are no longer available to you in versions of Premiere Elements earlier than 11. You may see the thumbnails for those members only items, but they are no longer available to you in Premiere Elements earlier than 10.
Interestingly, many of them are found in Premiere Elements 11, 12, and 13 as part of the program with no need to purchase them or have any special membership in anything. Adobe has promoted Adobe Revel as a replacement for photoshop.com, but that has no impact on this disc menus issue.
This all has to do with Adobe discontinuing photoshop.com and photoshop.com plus et al.
If you need to download regular disc menus for Premiere Elements 10, please review the following
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE 7, 8, 9,10: Content Download
    Bottom lines:
    1. No more Sign In for Premiere Elements 10
    2. No access to photoshop.com plus (members only) disc menus
Any questions or need clarification on anything written, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thank you.

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 10: MPEG Activation on multiple computers

    Hi,
We need to install this software to multiple computer labs in a school.
Problem: When one tries to export (share) his project and save it with MPEG-format (PC:MPEG),
The software gives a popup about visiting the Adobe site and activating the component. This cannot
be done without administrative rights (UAC pop up on a Windows 7 x64 system). The people using
the computer lab will not have administrative rights.
How can we activate the MPEG component beforehand on all the labs computers without user interaction?
Do we need to insert registry values? Does the process download something from the internet? Install?
    Thank you in advance.

Here is the response I received from the experts at Adobe.
Siddharth: May I know the exact error message you are getting/
robert: it is a UAC prompt from Windows (7, 64).
    robert: "register service"
robert: standard user can not activate it.  It must be done with Admin account.  Since I will use these computers in a lab environment, I do not want to give them admin accounts.
Siddharth: Robert, I am sorry to inform you that the UAC error is related to the system security.
    robert: yes, of course.
robert: which is prompted by activating the MPEG component from your software.
robert: is it not possible to run this software as a standard user?  Must the users have an admin account?
robert: to activate the MPEG component?
Siddharth: You can use the software but you will not be able to use certain functions in the software.
Siddharth: it is advisable to use the software in the Admin accounts.
robert: Is there a way for me to install this software such that this comonent is activated and does not prompt the user?
Siddharth: I am sorry, but that is not possible.
robert: I'm sure this software is often used in a lab that would not grant the users an admin account.
robert: is it correct that the MPEG activation happens everytime.  Shouldn't it be a one-time operation?
Siddharth: Robert, there are known permissions with the standard user accounts.
    robert: what does that mean?
Siddharth: This is not just related to Premiere Elements.
robert: so how do standard users use this program?  Are you saying it is impossible for standard users to export as MPEG?  I can't believe this is true.
Siddharth: Adobe does not recommend standard user accounts.
robert: There must be a way to activate the MPEG component for the standard users accounts so they are not prompted again and again for this.  It doesn't make any sense.
Siddharth: I would suggest you use the software in Admin account.
robert: this is very dissapointing.  and I know there must be a way to accomplish this.
Siddharth: I am sorry but I will not be able to help you with this.
    so... not much help here.

  • Help with Adobe Premiere Elements window appearing!

I've owned Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 for about 5 or 6 years now. I still have the original disc and serial number. I installed it on my laptop (Sony Vaio bought in 2009. Runs on Vista), and when I open the program up and click on "files and folders" and double click on a video, I keep getting a pop-up saying "Adobe Premiere Elements is not working." And then the program closes. It frustrates me. I can't afford a new update. Anyway this can be fixed? It never did this to me on my old laptop which I do not have anymore. Thank you for your time.

Before you focus on the Premiere Elements 4 itself, let us look at the computer environment and the properties of the video that you are importing into the project.
    1. Given you have Premiere Elements 4. Is it installed on Windows Vista 32 or 64 bit?
    2. What are the properties of this video that you are importing into the new project and what have you set as the project preset to match the properties of that source media?...I am looking for video and audio compression, frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, file extension, pixel aspect ratio, duration. If you were to import a few jpg photos into a new project would that shut down the project/program as well?
    3. Do you have the latest verision of QuickTime installed on your computer with Premiere Elements 4? Do you have the program set for Run As Administrator and set to run from a User Account with Administrative Privileges?
    4. Is your video card driver version up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the video card?
    5. Is your computer optimized with a program such as ccleaner (regular cleaner and registry cleaner)?
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
    6. Please describe your computer resources?
Let us start here and then we can decide what next based on your details.
    Thanks.
