Setting up aggregate device

I'm trying to set up an aggregate device using 2 X Motu 828 MK 2 interfaces.  ....Signal is present on the 1st interface and on the external sampler that the sound is coming from.
Midi signal also there but.......I can't actually hear any audio......I've checked the outputs in Motu audio setup/ Cuemix, etc....and signal is present.
I can't think of what else I've missed here to get this happening.
So close !!
Can anyone suggest what I've overlooked ?
Thx

Got it .....problem solved

  • Aggregate Device not recognising Built-In Input

How do I get my Aggregate Device to recognise the ‘Built-In Input” in my iMac?
In the Audio Devices window, I have set my Aggregate Device to be the sound input master to allow me to choose ‘Aggregate Device’ as the Input Device in Logic Pro X .
This, I presume, means I do not have to switch between devices such as ‘Line In’ and my audio interface (Saffire) within Logic. I can just set it to ‘Aggregate’ and happily switch between tracks with different input types automatically catered for by the aggregate device.
However, although the ‘Aggregate’ selection in Logic recognises my audio interface input OK, to use my iMac’s own ’Built In Input’ I am forced to manually select ‘Built In Input’ as the Audio Input - the Aggregate setting does not seem to be recognise it and I can’t figure out why. Everything  else seems to work fine.
My set up: In the Audi Devices window, my audio interface is first in line, with the ‘Built in Input’ next. Both are selected for Use. The audio interface is set as the master clock and has no Drift Correction enabled. The ‘Built In Input’ has Drift Correction enabled. All devices are set to the same sample rate (‘Format’).
    Thanks.

    1) How have you concluded that the Built In input isn't there? - No sound (which I do get if I manually select the very same 'Built-In Input' source in Logic).
    2) Are there only 3 pairs of inputs when you use the Aggregate Device? - Not sure what you mean. It's as shown in the screenshots.
    3) Have you tried all available (pairs of) inputs from the Aggregate device (should be 8, or 4 pairs) in Logic? - Not sure what you mean. In Logic I am merely selecting the Input Device source in Preferences - I select Sapphire, Built-In Input all OK; select Aggregate and it doesn't recognise the Built-In input.
    4) And what kind of signal are you feeding the built-in input. - Line out from my eDrums (sep. right and left channel into single, stereo input on my iMac). Again, works fine but only when I manually select 'Built-In Input' source in Logic.
Incidentally, just tried making the Aggregate Device the 'use this device for sound input' master (with and without Drift Correction for In-Built Audio selected) and... no change.
What I mean and what is crucial is to know, is whether you have set your track(s) to the right input(s). On my screenshots you see how it should also look for you on stereo or mono audio tracks. 8 mono or 4 stereo  inputs.

Mono (disregard the names, those are just mine)

  • For Patrick Sasso/Rohan -- Aggregate Device Question

    Patrick and Rohan,
I noticed that the thread which Patrick started was "archived" and replies are not allowed. ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=237354&tstart=0 )
Wondering what that's all about... But anyway, here's my question:
I'm also running a PCI-424 and some MOTU interfaces also (old 2408 and some 1224's), but I'm not using the aggregate devices settings. So I'm wondering if I'm not aware of some useful aspect of the whole aggregate device thing... What are you using the aggregate device setup for? Is there an advantage to using it with a straight-forward audio recording/playback situation using the existing capabilities of the PCI-424 + interfaces?

AFAIK this has always been possible (in panther....)
as the 424 is configured, but appears as 1 device to
the OS. Make sense or did I misread?
I think you could do it off the MOTU PCI without
aggregation, right? I am not a big MOTU guy but...
Well, let's put it this way: when I got my G5 one of the first things I did was pop in the 424 card, hook up the interfaces, run the MOTU config thingee and it recognized all 3 interfaces without a hitch. Great!
Then I installed Logic and without glitches it saw all of the MOTU ins and outs. Great!
In my 40 output setup, Logic simply numbers the outputs consecutively, in the order that the interfaces are plugged into the 424 card. Within Logic there is no designation of outputs belonging to any particular device, i.e., none of the audio output labels are designated "MOTU 2408" or "MOTU 1224 #1" or "MOTU 1224 #2". They're just outputs 1 - 40. So in a sense, the way Logic "expresses" the MOTU outputs, it's as though they're "aggregated" -- a single device.
It was only many weeks after I got my system up and running that I decided to explore the menus in the Audio MIDI Setup, and ran across this strange thing called "aggregate devices". There was zero, zero, zero documentation about it in the G5 manual nor in on-board Help, and a search of Apple's website turned up virtually no information. So basically, all this time I've been running with my MOTU interfaces, never configured anything having to do with aggregate devices, and I've yet to experience any kind of audio glitch with Logic. Great!
So in conclusion, I'd say that if an audio system consists exclusively of MOTU devices, setting up aggregate devices isn't necessary. Same situation with the MIDI side of AMS, really... with Logic you don't need to configure AMS MIDI to do anything. In fact, as you may have read in some of my prior posts, setting up MIDI in AMS actually creates more work than it's worth.
Therefore, my AMS is devoid of any user settings, except for the (seemingly) mandatory AMS-audio settings for "internal clock".

  • Help setting up my Aggregate Device

I'd like my aggregate device to include my interface and also my midi devices. Right now the built in line driver i can hear midi tracks but cant record audio. When my driver is set on the interface i can record audio but i cant hear the midi notes as i play them and they also dont play along with the song when its completed (playback).
This has been a problem of mine for awhile. i had it solved at one point, but to make a long story short, the problem is back.
    Help ?

  • Setting up m-audio firewire 410 as an aggregate device

Having an issue setting up my m-audio firewire 410 as an aggregate device. When I set it up it gives of this God awful distortion sound. I had it set up to my G4 with no problems. But then I upgrade to a MacBookPro, got the latest driver for this version and model, and still...nothing. Any ideas? I need to record and this is really bugging me.

It doesn't sound good with anything else. I just updated the newest driver and I am still unable to get rid of that radio static distortion sound. It is becoming very frustrating. I know it has something to do with the fact that I'm on a new Mac, because I got it to work with my PBG4 and it still does. It would be kind of stupid to record with the PBG4 but not my MacBookPro. Unless I just get another interface altogether. I shouldn't have to. It's still a great inerface. There's got to be a way to fix this issue. I'm just running out of patience. Thanks anyway.

  • I am trying to use 2 MOTU 896's as an aggregate device in Logic Pro 8

I am using Logic Pro 8 on a Macbook Pro OS 10.6.8.  I am trying to use 2 MOTU 896's as an aggregate device to have total of 16 inputs.  I am daisy chaining the 896's via firewire.  I can select channels 1-16 as inputs in Logic.  I am getting signal input in channels 1-8 in Logic.  However, I am getting no signal input in channels 9-16.  I've also tried using ADAT light pipe as output from the 2nd device to the 1st one and that didn't work either.  I have created the aggregate device under audio-midi setups and I've set the 1st 896's clock source to internal and the 2nd 896's clock source as the 1st 896.  I've also tried both 896's clock source as internal.  Has anyone had any success in using 2 896's as an aggregate device in Logic Pro 8?  I need to use this setup to record a large band.  I would greatly appreciate any tips that anyone has.  Thanks.

    David,
Learning is not a bad thing, I'm just saying what you thought MIDI did is in error, you're not the first.
Here's an article explaining what MIDI is and how it works, it probably seems less than you thought it capable of but the fact is, since it's standardization in 1983 it completely revolutionized electronic music. By the Way, the designers of the Prophet 8 (Dave Smith & Sequential Circuits) had a lot of input into the MIDI protocol, in fact, if you had to say one company/person came up with the basics of MIDI it was Sequential Circuits. They also came up with the first polyphonic, fully programmable analog synth. I had a very basic MIDI studio at the end of 1984.

  • What is a (Logic Express) aggregate device?

Im not a complete newbie to the world of music tech, I'm just getting back into it after a few years away. There's one term which keeps cropping up on here which is completely alien to me:
    Aggregate Device
What is an aggregate device? It seems to refer generally to sound cards or audio interfaces within a setup, but is there something special or different about the way the audio interface is set up in a studio which means it is referred to as an aggregate device? Is it just a different term for "audio interface"? ....or am I missing the point completely?
    Many thanks

    What is an aggregate device?
It's a virtual device which is created in Audio/MIDI set up. Its purpose is to combine two or more actual devices into one so that Logic can recognize it and use it for inputs and outputs. A 'device' also includes your Mac's built in audio inputs and/or outputs.
Unlike GarageBand, Logic can't use separate devices for input and output (this is ridiculous, but nevertheless true) so creating an aggregate device is a workaround.
Is it just a different term for "audio interface"?
Sort of - it's a virtual audio interface.

  • PLEASE HELP!!! Can't Use Aggregate Device in GarageBand

I have two iMics plugged directly into the two USB 2.0 ports on my iBook G4, and I used Audio MIDI Setup to create an aggregate device from the iMics. The aggregate device is recognized in GarageBand, but when I select it and say "OK" to the box asking me if I'm sure I want to switch drivers, it switches back to the input it was already set to.
I tried using the aggregate input in Sound Studio and monitoring it in the Sound System Preference pane, and it worked fine in both of those places, but I need to record multitrack audio for a recording session tonight, and I don't have any other programs besides GarageBand to do it!
Thanks in advance for any help. It seems that other people have had success doing this in 10.4 with GarageBand 2, but I don't have any luck yet.
[Edit: Also, I selected the first iMic as the 'Clock' source and I have both sample rates, and all other settings set exactly the same (16 bit, 2 ch, 44.100 KHz, etc.).]

Well, after a six hour recording session, I successfully used two iMics, and they did not drop out at all (or have any 'digital crud'). After I got them to work in GarageBand, I was unable to open GarageBand's preferences from within the application, so I had to use PrefSetter to change a couple things once I started recording.
Only after unplugging both iMics and opening a completely new session in GB was I able to change preferences from within the app.
Here's how I had the aggregate device set up:
    1. In Audio MIDI Setup, check the checkboxes ONLY for the iMics, and ONLY for the inputs (for some reason, if you check 'Use' for both inputs and outputs, GB can't handle it.
    2. Choose the iMic highest on the list as the 'Clock', and don't resample the other iMic(s) (no resample checkboxes should be checked).
    3. Click Done to get out of the Aggregate Device Editor, then, in the Audio MIDI Setup main window, choose the device you just created in the properties area, and make sure all the 'Streams' are set to 44.100 KHz and 16bit, 2ch.
    4. Quit Audio MIDI Setup, and open GarageBand.
    5. In GB, open the preferences, click on Audio/MIDI, then switch to the Aggregate Device you just created.
If GB won't switch to it, go back to Audio MIDI Setup and change the aggregate device to only include you internal audio, then switch to the new device in GB, save the file you have open, then quit GB, go to Audio MIDI Setup and add the iMics, removing the internal audio (set it up as I outlined above), then quit Audio MIDI Setup and open GarageBand with the file you just created, and the device should be selected (but you won't be able to change any Preferences now).
-Another note: The USB Hub I was trying to use (a high-speed USB 2.0 mini hub from Belkin) was not able to work very well - I don't think it quite had the capabilities of running either one or two iMics through it (the level was off, and the audio became out of sync quite quickly). I might be able to find a better hub (Griffen used to make an 'Audio USB Hub'), and I hope to try that out next recording session.
As a final note: The band I was recording decided to scrap all the work last night because they messed up on the first track we recorded, but didn't realize it until the end (all the other performers played off that track). Oh, well... Have a nice Saturday!

  • Aggregate Device fails

I am trying to use my audio outs and a wireless bluetooth speaker at the same time. I have followed instructions for setting up an aggregate device, but without luck. I have tried 4 different bluetooth speakers. The only thing I can think of is a sample rate issue. All devices, including the headphone outs are set on 44100Hz. However, all the bluetooth speakers are 2ch-32 bit and the audio outs are 2ch-24 bit.
Is this the problem or is there something else? Is there a fix?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Anyone?

  • Aggregate Devices Tool is Broken

I'm creating an aggregate device incorporating a number of devices with the same hardware configuration (hence the same name and manufacturer) through USB hubs.
However, the aggregate devices editor - whilst showing up the devices - and whilst all devices can be used as outputs for iTunes for example, refuses to accept that more than 1 input channel or 2 output channels are available in total, even with 7 half-duplex devices attached.
This configuration should provide a total of 14 channels of output and 7 channels of input (7 mono mics).
Each of the devices show up under coreaudio named...
    C-Media USB Headphone Set
Inside, these map to something like this...
    'AppleUSBAudioEngine:Unknown Manufacturer:C-Media USB Headphone Set :fd110000:1'
If I attach two directly to the Macbook (e.g. not through a hub) then everything's fine.
However, wherever two or more are gathered together in the name of 'C-Media USB Headphone Set' through a hub, then the problem with lost audio channels is experienced.
Anything I can do to avoid this problem. In the end I have 16 to attach altogether and only two usb ports on my Macbook.
I experience this problem with three different USB 2.0 hubs both powered and unpowered from completely different manufacturers.
Looks like I'll have to move to Linux or Windows to get this audio setup to work.

I've had some contact with support and it appears to be a
problem with Flash choking on a font. None of my fonts are corrupt
(and I don't have any issues with any other apps), but if I remove
all my fonts but a few basic ones, the text tool works okay. I'm in
the process trying to isolate the problematic font(s) out of the
1000+ fonts that I have... yay...

  • Aggregate Device "3/4" won't work in Garageband

Last week, we tried to create an "Aggregate Device" out of 3 or 4 microphones. One was the macbook's built-in mic, one was a USB headset, and another was a desktop microphone. This setup worked fine, and worked very well for our podcasting needs.
However, when we tried to record this week, Garageband wouldn't allow us to use all of the inputs. We would select the "Aggregate Device (3/4)" option from the menu for track settings, and it would constantly just switch to "Aggregate Device (1/2)". Playing around with the different recording settings allowed the USB Headset to record, but it wouldn't allow to do all of the inputs we had specified. We've tried everything, from setting up a new Aggregate Device to recording with alternative programs such as Audacity, and have had no success as of yet. What do we need to do to fix the issue? Is this a driver-based error, a software bug, or is it possibly an issue with CoreAudio?

So I only need the MIDI out cable plugged into the INPUT port on my keyboard?
No, the other way round: From the keyboard's OUT to the interface's IN.
I looked at the GB's preferences, and yes, it says that there is 1 Midi device recognized. However, it's strange that this happens before I even plug the Midi cables into the keyboard.
That's perfectly o.k. The midi device is the interface - the computer can't know whether there's something plugged into the device's input.
Oh, and by the way, the thunks I hear when I test the Midi connection in Audio Midi aren't distinguished between different keys. It's one constant note for all of the keys.
I think that's how it's supposed to work - it should just indicate that there's midi data coming in.
Here's another test: If you switch the LED display that normally shows the position of the playhead to the tuning fork symbol, it should display the notes and chords that you play on your keyboard - does that work?

  • CS5 Aggregate Devices

Trying to use an aggregate device in Adobe Audition CS5. I keep getting the message "the Device in the use by another process". Each Mic works individually, but when I add the aggregate device I get that message.
I've exited all apps besides Audition. Tried restarting, nothing works.
Running adobe cs5 on a 27 inch iMac running OSX 10.9.5. I have created the aggregate device from two Blue Yeti Mics.
There was a discussion about this in 2011 with no resolution. Anyone have an success? Is there another way to have two USB mics record simultaneously in Audition?

    ryclark wrote:
So the Mac audio drivers have to sample rate convert all the USB mics internally to a common sample rate for the DAW to understand> Doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.
Doesn't to me either - but it must be what they're doing, yes.
    R-swizzey wrote:
The aggregate set up with two USB mics works just fine in Garageband. Surely a product like Audition should be able to out-perform a free app. There has to be an easy solution. Right?
Doesn't work like that. The aggregation function is inherently a part of the OS. Audition doesn't deal with that level of functionality at all, and simply records what is sent to it from whatever device is available. In theory, on PCs, ASIO4ALL ought to be able to aggregate USB devices in the same way, but I have no idea whether it can or not. This is simply because I don't own a single USB mic, and never will! If it won't, it will be because it can't do the re-sampling necessary on the fly.

  • Aggregate devices

Hi! I've been trying to set an aggregate audio device with built in audio, iMic and Soundflower (this one just for fooling the system). I wanted to see DVDs with 5.1, but that doesn't work. I configure everything ok. L and R speakers to Built in audio, Rear speakers to iMic and center and SW to Soundflower. Then i hook up speakers to each one of the outputs (except Soundflower) and play a DVD. But when i play the DVD i only get sound in front speakers (even when this is assigned to iMic). What am i doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance
    P.S. - I'm sure the DVD is 5.1

  • Aggregate device on the same firewire bus (fireface 800 and Lightbridge

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up a aggregate device with my old RME Fireface 800 (on the firewire 400 bus) and this new M-Audio Lightbridge. But allthough I manage to create the device, there is no sound at all. The Fireface acts as digital master via a word clock cable. The Fireface are connected via a 10 m. cable to the rear connection (on my nes Mac Pro) and the Lightbridge are connected to the front. I know it's the same bus using those two connectors, so do you think a separate firewire board would be a solution?
    Regards Stig

So the firewire "bus" and a firewire "interface" are the same thing then? Excuse my ignorance, I've just been put in the position that I needed to know this for the first time with this audio interface problem. The things I used my firewire ports for just worked without me having to learn much about it up until now. Also, I found some posts that the card had some issues functioning in a version of Leopard. I'm about to upgrade from Tiger (finally) directly to Snow Leopard. Do you (or anyone else who sees this) happen to know if there are any issues there? I appreciate the help very much Rod.
