Setting up airport extreme to replace netgear router

Thanks in advance for help and advice with this one. Im desperate to replace my unreliable netgear router so i bought a Apple Airport Extreme base station (Generation 6).
At the moment I have my satellite box (tooway satellite provided by europasat) plugged into my netgear router and can access the internet via the wifi. I also have my airport extreme WAN port plugged into one of the netgear router ethernet bays. So effectively I have 2 wireless networks and can connect to the internet with both.
I tried removing my netgear router from the system and plugging my satellite box directly into the airport extreme and started set up. The airport extreme sets up ok but i just get an orange light for the internet.. I have tried using static IP, DCHP etc and also changing it from off bridge mode to DCHP and DCHP and NAT but i get various errors. Its keeps asking for a DNS address but i don't know what to enter..
If i look on my router setup its currently set to get IP addresses dynamically from the ISP.
Can anyone help me set this up properly without the netgear router (which constantly resets and drops the internet connection!!)
I just need a reliable home network that can connect several macs, iPads and iPhones, PS4 etc

As we suspected, your satellite provider is giving you a "private" IP address, and not the "public" IP address that you should be receiving. There is nothing wrong with the Netgear router, but it sounds like you have the AirPort Extreme connected at this time.
"Off" Bridge Off would normally be the correct setting to use with your satellite "modem" since it is behaving as if it were another router.
Unfortunately, you will have to use the DHCP and NAT setting on your AirPort Extreme to compensate for the incorrect IP address assignments that your satellite service is providing to you. Since your satellite "modem" is already providing NAT service, and the AirPort Extreme is as well, you have two devices both trying to do NAT.......that is why you see the Double NAT error.
Unless you can get your satellite provider to provide you with a "public" IP address, you will have to continue to run the AirPort Extreme in the Double NAT setup and hope for the best. You might be able to get away with this error on a simple home network.
If you do not want to see the blinking amber light, open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Extreme. A smaller window will appear. Look for a Status setting and click on the small amber dot next to Status. Another window will appear with an option to "Ignore" the Double NAT error. That will give you a green light on the AirPort Extreme, and hopefully things will work.
Double NAT can cause a number of unpredictable things to occur on a network, but the most common is slow browsing on the Internet, and/or you may be able to get to some web pages, but not others.
Hopefully, things will work OK for you since you really will no other options to set up the AirPort Extreme correctly until you receive the correct public IP address that you deserve from your satellite provider. You might want to speak to them about this and let them know that you are on to their tricks, though.

I currently have an imac running the internet through an optus branded netgear gateway cg3000. Lately my wifi signal strength and range has been very poor.
The more I read the more confused I get but I think that Optus disable bridging mode (whatever that is!) on this modem/router so that is not an option for a setup.
From what I've been able to work out I think I want to buy an airport extreme to hopefully improve my wifi but still run the internet to the imac through Ethernet connection.
SO
1. Do i simply turn the wifi button on the front of the modem off, and leave the Ethernet cord running between the netgear and imac?
2. then connect the airport extreme to the netgear to run wifi as the router - what cord/cable do I need?
3. Does a cord also have to go between the imac and the airport extreme (so i can use the airport utility to setup?)
4. And then what options do i need to select to run it all like this in the airport utility - even a link to a step by step guide would be great if I just know what "mode" or whatever i am going for.
5. Lastly do i need to change any of the settings for my netgear router (I mean the kind of settings you access thorugh the website adress that looks like: 192.168.0.1 address to access the router settings before to change the channel to try and improve wifi with some but limited/short lived success).

If you mean edit of the CG3000.. I don't know.
yes I can switch off NAT through a "secret setting" link (thanks to the afore-not-mentioned site!).
If you have NAT off in the CG3000 then you can easily setup the AEBS as router.. you simply reset it .. voila.. it is now back to default.. which is router.
The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on.. all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
So is it important to then do things in the right order?
Eg: do i change the settings in netgear turning off Nat first
The order is important.
Change the settings in the Airport first. Once it is in router mode.. then you turn off the NAT in the CG3000 and power cycle it.. and then power cycle the AEBS..
No luck just do power cycling again with a longer gap.. try 20min off instead of 5min.
The AEBS must show the public IP as its WAN address.
Before doing anything with airport utility or is airport utility unnecessary when I am using Airport extreme as full router?
You must always have access to the AEBS at all times.. you can get access to the CG3000 by plugging ethernet cable into it directly when you need it.

Can't get security to work - Airport Extreme card and Netgear router

This apparently is not as simple an issue as I expected, so I would appreciate some help.
I just got dsl and a Netgear WGT624 wireless router to connect my wife's iBook G4 with AirPort Extreme card. I used a wired-in pc to set up the router via the web interface and can connect the iBook to the web wirelessly as long as I have security disabled. When I attempt to set WEP or WPA the connection fails.
Initially, I assumed I just was missing something in the AirPort setup, even after looking through all the documentation I could find. I upgraded yesterday from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9, just to see, but had no improvement.
If I select "WPA-PSK(TKIP)" in the router, it asks for a password, which I also then enter to login to the selected network via Internet Connect. I get "there was an error joining..."
If I select "WEP" with 64 bit and shared key options, use the same password to automatically generate the assorted keys, I am not sure what to enter to login. I have received incorrect password messages or no response at all.
I would appreciate any further direction or suggestions.

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

"WPA Personal" on the Mac corresponds to plain WPA, with a pre-shared key (PSK) and TKIP encryption, on non-Apple wireless routers. The same alphanumeric password should work on both.

HELP! Problem with setting up Airport Extreme in "extend wireless network mode"!

So I am trying to put my AirPort extreme in extend a wireless network mode. So I factory reset it, plugged it in, and went into Airport Utility to set it up. So it finds the device, and I set it up to extend the network. It does everything, and it gets set up. But there is an error message that says it was unable to extend the wireless network. Then 1 minute later, the Airport Extreme drops out, and the Airport Utility says device not found. I tried this multiple times, and it keeps happening. What should I do?

Unfortunately, the AirPort Extreme will not be able to wirelessly extend a Netgear product. That feature will only work if you are connecting the AirPort Extreme to another Apple router.
If you want the AirPort Exteme to provide more wireless coverage, you will need to plan to connect it to the Netgear router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.

When Charter Tech goes to your site, have them connect the modem up, but do not connect the modem to your iMAC or MacBook Pro. What you want to do is connect the Airport Extreme to the iMac or MacBook Pro first with the Ethernet Cable. You have to do this to configure via Airport Utility to set up the Base Station Name & Base Station Password.
You will then create/configure a Wireless Network, create your Wireless Password that will be entered on each of your Devices, example, Apple Tv, your iPhone, etc., you want to allow access to your Wireless Network you are creating.
Wireless Security will be -> WPA/WPA2 personal or just WPA2
Enter the Wireless Password you want
Verify the Wireless Password (enter it again)
After it is created you will see it on the Airport Utility window with the name you created for it and to the left, will be a Dot (circle that will be yellow).
Next you then want to unplug the power to the Airport Extreme, and then take the end of the Ethernet cable you unplugged from the iMac or Lap top MacBook Pro and connect it to the back of the Modem.
Next unplug the power cord from the modem and wait about 5 minutes, then plug the power back into the Arris Modem and wait until all lights come back on the modem wait
about 5 minutes, then plug the power cord back to the Airport Extreme and you will see it the light blinking yellow. Wait about 5 to 10 minutes, during this time Restart you IMAC or MacBook Pro, and once it is back up click on the Airport Utility and you should see on the Airport Utility screen.
For INTERNET to the left the light should be green and you should see the Airport Extreme also appear and the light to the left on the screen should also be green. If they are, you then should be able to click on the Wireless Symbol on top of bar of the screen and click to select the Wireless Network Name you created.
If you Do Not See the light (Icon) next to INTERNET turn Green, or if you see the Internet Light Green, but the Light (Icon) next to the Airport Extreme is yellow, unplug the power again to the modem and unplug the power again to the Airport extreme and wait about 15 minutes or up to 30 minutes. Then plug the power cord back to the modem wait till all the lights light up then, plug the power cord back into the Airport Extreme and Restart your iMAC or MacBook Pro.
The Airport Extreme light should change from yellow to green. Open up the Airport Utility to see what the indicators are showing they should both be green. Again select Wireless network you created under the Wireless Icon on the top right of the screen. Open Safari and see if you are able to Route to a web page or the apple site should appear.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR AIRPORT EXTREME WAS PREVIOUSLY SET UP FOR USE WITH ANOTHER CARRIERS ROUTER OR MODEM.
NOTE: If you already had your Airport Extreme connected for example, I previously had ATT Uverse and the Airport Extreme was connected to the Wireless Router Model 3801HGV, I disabled the Uverse Wireless and used the Airport Extreme for the Wireless signal in bridge mode, as the Airport extreme Signal is much stronger than the Uverse router, and I was able to obtain a Wireless signal with the Airport Extreme way much better with no signal loss which was very very frustrating with the Uverse router.
Anyhow if you had it hooked up like this, now that you will be using it with the Charter ARRIS Modem TM902A, you will need to reset the Airport Extreme to clear out the old data it has in memory, with the previous set up otherwise it will not work. Trust me I spent 6 hours trying to make it work reading all Apple Support Community questions and answers relating to this type issue/problem others have been having trying to get their set up working. I tried all the tips, and I finally decided just to see if by chance I would be able to connect with someone with Charter Tech support who might be familiar with Apple to be able to assist me and by luck I did. He told me why it was not working and was all due the previous configuration with the ATT Uverse router was still in memory with the Airport Extreme. Finally it was 10:30 PM when I decided to call Charter Tech Support and I had been working on this since 3:00 pm pacific. I did not call them earlier as all the post I read said they never received any good help from Charter. After calling them I finished up by 11:00 PM and was able to finally connect Apple Tv, iMac, iPhones and Macbook Pro. We love our Apple Product and Happy all is connected with the new
Internet Provider Charter. I must say the speed is way way much better than it ever was with AT&T Uverse.
THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO:
First you will need to unplug the Airport Extreme, then by taking the tip of a pen or paper clip end you need to push the reset button on the back of the Airport Extreme and hold it
down and at the same time plug the power cord back into the Airport Extreme count to 5 or 10 then release the reset button. Then once he light in front of the Airport Extreme stops blinking you need to plug the Ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to your iMAC or Macbook Pro, and restart which ever one you have, then open the Airport Utility once it is back up. If you see airport extreme pop up with the old network name or it shows and yellow triangle click on the Airport Extreme ICON it will not let you configure it but will ask if you want to get rid of it or remove and just do it. Then Again restart your iMAC or MacBook Pro, open up Airport Utility again, and on the top left you should see under “Other Airport Base Stations” the MAC ID for the Airport Extreme.

I just got a Charter Modem. Model TM822. While I was moving, my Airport Extreme was still at my old place.
I have a Linksys WRT320N I used for the initial Charter setup.
I can get my Airport to work here, but the Internet light on the Modem flashes Yellow.
Hasn't caused any issues so far but one thing I did notice.
On the Linksys there were 3 DNS servers listed.
The Airport Extreme only lists 2 and i don't see where I could add another, only change whats already there.
I tried everything above, but light on modem still flashes yellow.
I have the technicians cell phone. Told me "that shouldn't be" and gave the same advice listed above.
I'll break down and call Charter one day, see if it's on their end. NSA tracking may need a reset LMAO.

Can I set up Airport Extreme for wireless printiing over Uverse network?

I previously had DSL, and used my Airport Extreme as my wireless router. It was in my home office, so my printer was directly plugged into the Base Station. I recently switched to ATT Uverse, which came with its own wireless router. The new router is in another room, next to the TV. My question is this: Can I set up my old AEBS to function as a wireless printing outpost, like an Airport Express, that would be connected to my office printer but accessed through the ATT network? In theory, yes. In practice, this is one of those things that you won't know until you try. Since the AEBS will have to "join" your ATT wireless network, the biggest question will be whether or not you can find a matching security setting on the AEBS for the ATT wireless network.
Are you able to get into the setup pages on the ATT router to see exactly what type of security is being used? Ideally, it will be WPA2 Personal, but different manufacturers use different names and flavors for the same thing, so it's rarely as easy as one might hope when you try to get devices from two manufacturers to talk to each other over wireless.

How to repeat wireless signal using Airport Extreme as base, Netgear as repeater

Some input and/or assistance is appreciated. I purchased a new 802.11ac Airport Extreme. I have an old Netgear wndr3300 (802.11n, 2.4 or 5GHz). I'm trying to repeat the 2.4GHz using the Airport Extreme as the master router and the Netgear as the repeater. The Netgear DOES have an option for repeating in the admin menu. I've followed what instructions I was given on the admin menu regarding providing the MAC address of the Airport to the Netgear router. I have had no success finding a place to enter the MAC address of the Netgear router on the Apple router if that is necessary. Can anyone assist?

While in close proximity to the TC, I can successfully browse the web and can log into the NG routers admin panel and view its settings. However, when I go out into the garage, the signal stays very strong, but I lose connectivity to the Internet.
When in close proximity to the TC, the Netgear is picking up a strong signal.
Move the Netgear device out to the garage....but do not power it up.
Log on to the TC wireless, if you can. That very weak and slow signal.....if you can log onto the Internet at all....is the same signal that the Netgear will be receiving.
A repeater or extender or whatever you want to call it can only repeat or extend the quality of signal that it receives. It won't make a slow signal faster or a poor quality signal better.
Therefore, the normal location for an repeater or extender would be a point that is about half way between the TC and and the garage.
Extending this way always results in significant compromises in performance. The extender needs to be close to the TC to get a good signal to extend. At the same time, you want a strong signal from the repeater for devices in the garage, so the extender needs to be close to the garage.
It cannot be close to the TC and be close to the garage at the same time with any method that I know of.
You may need to look at running an Ethernet cable out to the garage if you want good performance out there. Since there is no signal loss in a wire, the device in the garage gets a top quality signal to work with.

Will adding AirPort Extreme to my fios router improve my speed and distance to led tv.. The tv keeps dropping network and 50% of the time it tells me my broadband is too slow. I have upgraded to fios faster internet speed.

Will adding AirPort Extreme to my Fios router improve reception on tv located about 50 feet away..have new top of the line samsung smart tv and it drops signal every other day. When trying to watch netflix or amazon it transmits in SD only says bandwidth is not high enough for Hd. My ipad laptops and iphone work fine in this room. Any help will be appreciated or am I better off with a booster.

The AirPort Extreme will not be able to wirelessly "boost" or "repeat" the wireless signal from the Fios router, since It will only work with another Apple router for that feature.
So, if you plan to extend or repeat the FIos wireless signal, you should use a product by the same manufacturer as the Fios router....or possibly a "universal" repeater from a company like Netgear.
Make sure that you understand the store's return policy before you buy any kind of extender or repeater.....since you cannot know if the product will help until you try it out in your home.
The TV really needs a wired Ethernet connection from the Fios router if at all possible.

Hi, I am not a networking expert so if I ask a silly question please forgive me. I am trying to set up my airport extreme as the main router in my house. I have an airport express as an extender for the second floor. I just upgraded my Internet service and they installed an arris tm602. I connected my a/p extreme and had the double NAT error. Internet Access worked when i chose ignore this but I wasn't happy with this. What I can see happening is that the apple base station was getting a192.168.0.x ip address and anything below that apple gave out the typical 10.x.x.x. And, I had visibility on all my apple devices. I figured this may be slowing my network down. So i tied to fix this. When i fixed this, following instructions by changing to bridge mode the double NAT error is gone but now i have no visibility on my apple devices and everything is on the 192.x.x.x subnet. I want my apple router providing dhcp - Not the arris as now I only get the hex Hardware id of each unit.
Does anyone know how to get the arris to not serve dhcp or getting it to eliminate the NAT error without crashing it? I really want the apple hardware doing their job rather than a third party piece of hardware. I tried to remove the dhcp option and that was a mistake... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have just purchased the new Airport Extreme (August 2014) because Apple's website states
Simultaneous dual-band support.
AirPort Extreme features simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac Wi‑Fi. That means it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time. So no matter which band your wireless devices use, they’ll automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest possible performance.
I have number of Macs in my home from a new MacBook Pro with Mavericks to a Macbook Air with Snow Leopard (due to required software) and iPads.
So after setting up the new Extreme my new MacBook only accesses 11n as does my older Macs. I checked by holding down the option key while clicking the WiFi icon at the top of my Mac. Well, not so automatic then as I was expecting 11ac and 3 times faster access (as stated by Apple).
I then looked for some documentation for setting up but cannot find anything.
Hence my question here.
How to set up Airport Extreme for 11ac and 11n simultaneously?
At present the new Extreme is no better than my previous 2 year old one.

Assuming that it is operating correctly, 802.11ac and 802.11b/g/n are broadcast simultaneously by default.
Simultaneous dual-band support.
AirPort Extreme features simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac Wi‑Fi. That means it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time. So no matter which band your wireless devices use, they’ll automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest possible performance.
That is advertising. The real information is usually found in the small and hard to read footnotes:
Based on theoretical peak speeds. Actual speeds will be lower.
AirPort Extreme is based on an IEEE 802.11ac draft specification. Performance based on comparison with Apple’s 802.11n products. Comparison assumes AirPort Extreme network with 802.11ac-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Accessing the wireless network requires a Wi‑Fi-enabled device. Actual speed will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions.
Since the 802.11ac signal is being broadcast only using the 5 GHz band, some users report that they have had better results by using the option to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then pointing their Mac to that specific signal or network. You may want to try that option.
But first as a test, please locate the MacBook Pro about 10-15 feet or 3-4 meters from the AirPort Extreme with clear line-of-sight between the two devices. Restart both the AirPort Extreme and the Macbook Pro and then check to see if the Mac is connected to an 802.11ac signal.
If not, please power off your other wireless devices...computers, mobile devices, etc. temporarily, and try the same test again.

I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express? I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections.
It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."
For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb.
In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.

The answer depends on whether the AirPort Extreme is your main router....or...the Linksys device is your main router.
In either case, the two devices must connect together using a wired Ethernet connection using CAT5e or CAT6 cabling.
Any version of the AirPort Extreme produced within the last 5 years will have Gigabit Ethernet ports. In order to get the same speeds from the Linksys router, it will also need to be Gigabit Ethernet capable.
If you need additional Ethernet ports, you will need to add a Gigabit Ethernet switch to either the AirPort Extreme or Linksys router.
It is assumed that your other devices connecting to the AirPort Extreme and Linksys router will also have Gigabit Ethernet capability.
Not sure why you mention "ac" speeds in your post. This relates to wireless connections, not wired.

"Hiding" the SSID will do nothing to protect you from hackers.....and anyone else who wants to see your network, since there a numerous free utilities on the Internet that will reveal your network in seconds.
On the other hand, it might keep a few honest neighbors from seeing the name of your wireless network.
iOS devices often have trouble connecting to a "hidden" network, so you may need to display the network if your iPhone, iPad, etc have trouble connecting to the network.

Assuming that you have Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks on your MacBook Pro.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Edit in the smaller window
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options at the bottom of the window
Enter a check mark in the box next to Create Hidden Network
Click Save, then click Update and allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart
