Setting Up an External HD so that It Can Be Accessed Wirelessly From My Mac

I have a 6 month old MacBook Pro running Leopard 10.5.2, an external Maxtor 500 GB HD formatted for "MAC OS Extended (Journaled)" I am using for mainly for my iPhoto Library and a Western Digital My Studio 1 TB drive formatted for "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" I am using as a backup for Time Machine. Currently Time Machine is backing up both my MBP HD and the Maxtor drive to the WD drive. Right now both of the external HDs are connected directly to my MBP via USB 2.0 and Firewire 800 respectively.
My goal is to find someway to connect these drives to my wireless network, whereby I can take my MBP and be in any room in the house and access those two drives, either for iPhoto purposes or to run my backups with Time Machine
Since neither of these drives has an ethernet connection I need to use some sort of an adapter that would enable me to connect both of the drives via USB (or Firewire) to that adapter and then have that adapter connect into one of the ethernet ports on the back of my wireless router.
My thinking is that I don't have to setup a NAS environment whereby according to Wikipedia a NAS is...

The operating system and other software on the NAS unit provide the functionality of data storage, file systems, and access to files, and the management of these functionalities. I was hoping that there was another way of doing this. I came across this idea but wasn't sure if it would work because primarily it doesn't state it supports the MAC O/S...

I have a question out to Belkin to verify if indeed it does or does not support Tiger and/or Leopard. I'll update this post once I know more.

Why do I have to use an Airport Extreme Base Station? Why can't I use my legacy equipment which is a Netgear 4 Port 802.11g Wireless Router and plug a USB ( or preferably Firewire 800) Hub into one of the open ports on this router and then connect my external HD to the hub? Wouldn't that solve my issue. I know my speed might be slow, but would it really not be worth it to do it this way?
What am I gaining by going to the Airport Extreme other than 802.11n technology. I have two external HD's I would need to connect. One is Firewire 400/USB 2.0 and the other is Firewire 800/400 and USB 2.0. I also would want to run Time Machine in conjunction with one of these HD's.
There's got to be a less expensive solution than buying the Airport Extreme Base Station and/or setting up a NAS.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I recently bought an external hard drive and attached it to a wireless modem router. The problem is that i can't access it from my macbook. I get a "connection failed" and "the server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally".

Well I believe I described the problem above. I want only to add that the external hard drive is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive 1TB and the wireless modem router is a Belkin N Plus (model F5D8635-4 v1). Also, in the finder window under "shared" I see a "belkinserver" and when I click it, it says "connection failed". If I click "connect as" I get the "the server "belkinserver" is available on your computer..." which I mentioned above. I tried to connect macbook via ethernet to the modem router and then when I typed "smb://belkinserver" it immediately prompted me for a username and a password and when I typed them finally I got to enter the contents of the hard drive! So what's the problem wirelessly?

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

Time Machine is backup, not an archive. You should not use it to keep permanent copies of things you have deleted from your main disk. Once the original is gone, the Time Machine copy will not last forever. If you want to keep a permanent copy of a photo "offline", you must make a copy of it somewhere.

I would just like to tell you my 30gig color ipod will not load photos from 2 diff pc's, I read a article somewhere here on apples website that said it could only load pics from 1 coumputer. I do not know if this helps you at all

Yes you can. OS X version 10.6.6 and later can read/write exFAT. Windows XP SP3 and later can read/write exFAT. As posted by Radiation Mac, you can do it from Windows or from OS X.
However, I've noticed Windows to be somewhat picky about drives formatted on a Mac. So, if Windows can't read it, try formatting it on the Windows machine, and see how it works on the Mac.
Posting your email on a public forum isn't a very good idea. It will likely be harvested by spambots and used as the reply-to address for spam it sends out.
Also, most people are not going to send an email to you for similar reasons. Nobody knows who you are, so sending an email to you could be giving a spammer a valid email address.
The forum is set up to automatically notify you when there are responses to your questions. When you get one, you would log back into this forum and check to see what the answer was.

Can someone explain how to set up an administrator account so that I can have my phone and my daughters have separate apple ids?

I mistakenly updated to the latest version of iOS and ever since then I can send messages to my daughter and I receive them but she does not. She has an iphone also and her phone is under my apple id also. Someone told me that I could set up an Administrator Account so that she can still be under my account but she has her own ID and that will fix the problem with text/imessages. I'm still not clear on what you are trying to accomplish. If you have an iPhone and she does as well you should have your own Apple IDs.
If you want to pay for any purchases she makes with her phone as far as apps/music goes than that is what Family sharing is for.
In my case my Wife and I are setup for family sharing. When she purchases music/apps it charges my credit card. This setup also allows me to share my past music/app purchases with her and vice versa.

Does the time capsule work as an external hard drive that you can access from multiple lapttops

I have a mac desktop, a macbook and a pc laptop. I also purchased the time capsule. Will that functional as an external hard drive that I can use to save a share documents between. Trying to figure out the best way to work on documents between devices. new to max and trying to make the full switch but still working with toshiba laptop for a while too.

Yes, it can function as an external drive for all the devices. As for Windows, you just need to make sure that
it is Windows Professional or XP, as they support mapped network drives. Windows 7 Home Premium doesn't is not capable of mapping network drives. At home, I have a ubuntu laptop, Windows 7 Profesional laptop, and Macbook Pro and they all backup to the Time Capsule 1 TB. Hope this helps!!

File Add Folder to Library, and point it to the top folder on the external. That will cause iTunes to add all the files to the library.

To do that you need to be using an IMAP type email account rather than a POP type. Check with your email provider to see if they provide this service and, if so, switch to it on all your devices.
