Setting up an older AE to extend an AEn network as a Ethernet bridge

I know that this question has been asked a million times, and I've followed everyone's instructions and no matter what I do, AEn is still amber and no network gets to the AE.
Here is current setup:
Airport Utility: 5.5.1

2.4 ghz ID: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:65
Wireless mode: Participate in a WDS network
Wireless network name: Pastel

Radio mode: 802.11a - 802.11b/g
Radio channel selection: manual 149/4
Wireless security WPA/WPA2 personal
WDS mode: WDS main
Allow wireless clients: Checked
WDS remotes: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:B8 (the x's are just added for you guys)
DHCP and NAT enabled
AE to be used as Ethernet bridge (I originally wanted it to extend wireless too, but I can do without that, and disabling wireless clients makes debugging easier):
Firmware version: 5.7

Anything unmentioned is left as default.
Airports are next to each other, like right beside each other, but the AEn reports WDS error that no other airports have been detected. I have tried temporarily attaching the two together with an ethernet to no avail. I have internet no problem coming from the AEn, but plugging with Ethernet into the AE, while the utility shows green, I do not properly get assigned a DHCP address, and have no network connectivity.
I hope I've posted enough information, please let me know if you need more and anything I can do to help the situation.

I've actually already followed the guide to no avail. That said, I have 'resolved' my issue. Unfortunately it won't help anyone else who has this issue because I simply swapped the two devices and everything worked. (Its not an issue of typo as the settings were literally copied and pasted out of notepad). Which is too bad because I wanted to have the Ethernet ports at my hub, but thats life. Mysterious or what? If that means anything to you guys, I'll give and real resolutions a whirl to see what happens.
This is actually the first time I've had difficulty with WDS, and my past experiences were with $30 SMC routers, so I am a bit surprised given the good experience I've had with airports otherwise.

If the AirPort Express is extending your network it is using the same wireless network name as your "main" router.
Your main router and the Express act like one "big" network now.
Your computer will connect to either the main router or the Express automatically....depending on where it sees the best signal.

Extending existing wireless network but via ethernet

Hey all,
The basic principle is I'd like to extend my wireless network - but using Ethernet.
The main reason for this is that I have Gigabit ethernet devices connected to the LAN ports on the Time Capsule, and then it's WAN port connected to the rest of my network.
I would like to enable the 5ghz N wireless on the TC and add it to my existing N 5ghz wireless network.
However when selecting either 'Extend' or 'WDS' in the settings in Airport Utility, the Internet tab shows it is receiving it's internet connection, and main connection to the network through wireless. Why would it want to be doing that when I've connected it to a Gigabit network?
All I want it to do is extend the wireless range of my main N base-station. I don't want traffic coming from the Gigabit devices to the LAN ports on the Time Capsule to then be routed over wireless instead of going out via the WAN port and the rest of my wired network.
The wireless network should just act as a bridge for devices to connect to my wired network. There should not be ANY communication between the wireless stations themselves. Communication between bases should be done through wires.
I had thought of one solution, however that consisted of each wireless unit having it's own network. But then there wasn't any way to group these individual networks into a big wireless mesh.
Any thoughts or solutions?

Literally, the only thing you need to do is set-up your base-stations to all create wireless networks with the *same name*.
Because they're all broadcasting the same name, it will act as one large network, as such, and your computer will share data with which ever station is closest.
It's like a mobile (cell) phone and the broadcasting towers.

How can I set up a time capsule to extend my wifi network from a non-apple Medialink MWN-WAPR300N?

I just purchased a new Medialink MWN-WAPR300N from Amazon to replace my old 2008 500 GB Time Capsule.
I was wondering if it would be possible to use my old Time Capsule to extend the network from the Medialink router to the rooms in the back of my house. Would this be possible? How about if I use the Time Capsule as the primary point, and use the Medialink router to extend the network?

The Time Capsule would not be compatible with a Medialink product if you are thinking of trying to use the Time Capsule to extend the Medialink network using wireless only.
The same would be true if the Time Capsule were the primary router, and you tried to use the Medialink product to extend the Time Capsule network wirelessly.
If you can connect the two devices together using a permanent wired Ethernet connection, then you should be able to accomplish your goal.

Questions regarding extending a wireless network

Hi, I have three questions about extending my network.
1- Is the option "Create a wireless network" on a Time Capsule creating a second wireless network if I use the same name and exact same settings as the wireless network created by an Airport Extreme or just extend it?
2- If yes, why using the "Create a wireless network" option to extend a wireless network since there's an option to "Extend a wireless network"?
I've discovered something I don't understand while plugin my Time Capsule. I've set it up using the option "Extend a wireless network" and everything is fine, but if I plug an ethernet cable on my Time Capsule that is relied to my Airport Extreme router that creates the network, I loose all signal.
3- Why I loose all signal if I connect my Time Capsule to my Airport Extreme via ethernet while my Time Capsule is on "Extend a wireless network" option.

If you have the Time Capsule (TC) connected by Ethernet to another AirPort or non-AirPort router, then this setting will create a second wireless network. However, if both routers are configured for roaming, both of these wireless networks will perform as "one."
2- If yes, why using the "Create a wireless network" option to extend a wireless network since there's an option to "Extend a wireless network"?
The "Extend a wireless network" option is for when you want the connection between AirPort routers to be wireless. The AirPort that would be extended would have the option: "Allow this network to be extended" enabled as well. Please check out this Apple Support article for more details on configuring an extended network with two or more 802.11n AirPorts.
3- Why I loose all signal if I connect my Time Capsule to my Airport Extreme via ethernet while my Time Capsule is on "Extend a wireless network" option.
It's because you have your network mis-configured for what you are trying to do. Again, that is because this option is only relevant when two AirPorts are interconnected by wireless.

Extending TC wireless network with AP Express

I just set up a brand new TC last week, and am thinking about buying a new AP Express to extend my wireless network into the basement. I've read through some of the threads here and it seems pretty straightforward, esp. since both devices will be 802.11n compatible.
The one question I have pertains to MAC access control, which I have enabled on my TC. Does the AP Express' AirPort ID need to be added to the MAC access control list on the TC if I'm setting up the AP Express to extend a wireless network? I assume that any devices that connect wirelessly to the AP Express will need to have their MAC addresses added to the access control list as well, just as if they were to connect to the TC, correct?
Also, do I need to make an Ethernet connection from the TC to the AP Express for the initial setup, or is it all done wirelessly? I will have the AP Express in the same room as the TC when I set it up and then gradually move the AP Express to its final location, somewhere between the TC and the basement (probably in the basement hallway near the door).

It's quite a bit simpler and usually more reliable if you do it this way

It can be, but this is sometimes confusing for users because the AirPort Express creates a default wireless network that you must log onto to be able to communicate to the device using AirPort Utility. This usually requires you to "switch" wireless networks for the configuration, then switch back again to your normal wireless network after the configuration is completed.
There's no switching involved if you simply temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express for the configuration and then disconnect it once you have updated the device with its new settings.

Using Time Capsule to extend a wireless network

I have an office in the top of my house (2nd floor roof conversion) and as a result the wireless signal from the ground floor is very weak. i would like to boost the signal using my Time Capsule, placing it on the 1st floor, shortening the distance the signal has to travel.
Is this possible? In the AirPort settings I can seen an option to 'extend a wireless network using an ethernet cable' but if that is the only option I may as well just move my wireless home hub to the 1st floor.
Can the network be extended wirelessly?

Thanks for the clarification.
Unfortunately, the "extend a wireless network" feature of the AirPort Express is only compatible with an Apple base station.
Therefore, you will not be able to use the TC to extend the wireless network that has been created by the BT Home Hub. You might check to see if BT offers an "extension device" or "remote" that would allow you to expand your wireless signal.
The TC will need to be configured to "Join" the wireless network that you have there.

Airport utility no longer recognizes my Airport Extreme Base Station, which had been set up to extend a wifi network

Hi. In November I set up my airport extreme base station (5th generation I believe) to wirelessly extend the wifi network we use at home to see if it would increase download speeds. Before doing that, I did a factory reset of my airport extreme, and the owner of the airport extreme to which the ethernet cable is attached made changes to his network to allow it to be extended. I folllowed all the directions from the apple support pages, and finally got it to work. I could even access a portable hard drive which I attached to the airport extreme base station being used as the extension. Then a week or so ago I noticed that my laptop would no longer connect to my base station. I did not have time to look into it until this week. Airport utility, either on my Mac or iphone no longer recognizes my base station. My mac is running OS X 10.10.1 and my iPhone is running iOS 8.1.2 I have tried both hard, soft and factory resets of my base station to no avail. The only thing that has changed after doing that, is that when I do a soft reset of my base station, a neighbors airport express appears when it never did before. I can't actually connect to it, but it does try. Then after approximately 5 minutes, it disappears from my list.
Today I went and pulled out my OLD AIRPORT EXTREME base station... you know, the one that looks like a space ship and is running wifi 802.1 b/c? airport utility DOES locate and display that, but airport utility returns a message stating that it cannot be set up by this software. I am attaching an image of that.

I think the initial problem is that your iPhone was connected to an open network that wasn't yours.
Go to Settings > WiFi and "Forget" the network created by that AirPort Extreme, it's older than dirt. Forget your neighbor's network also.
Perform the equivalent actions with your Mac: System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced... Delete every network that appears, including your own.
Then, connect to your own network on all your devices, after which you ought to be able to use any of them and configure your Extreme without any difficulty. You may need to start over with a "hard reset" on both the main AirPort Extreme and the one extending its network.

Not exactly, but using iCloud Keychain will populate all your devices with the names of preferred networks that any of them connect to, no matter where they are. I don't know why Apple considers that a beneficial feature.

Extending a extreme network with older Apple router

I need to extend my airport extreme A1134 network with an older aiport router A1304 UFO kind.
1st is this compatible with 10.85?
2nd how do i get the airport utility to see the older one...its booted but i cant see it

Unfortuntately, the older AirPort Extreme does not have a feature to "extend a wireless network", so it cannot extend the network of the newer AirPort Extreme wirelessly.....if that is your goal.

No, the older AirPort Extreme would need a Mac running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or a PC for set up......even if it were compatible with the newer AirPort Extreme for the purpose that you ask about.
Unfortunately, it's not....as mentioned above...IF....you are trying to connect using wireless between the two AirPort devices.

Trouble extending my WiFi network with older Airport Express

Hi,
As the question states, I have an older Airport Express which I have dug out to try and extend my WiFi network in a new house.
I am on Virgin Media (fibre optic) in the UK and get a good WiFi service but one room in the house (which I have just turned into a cinema/media suite) has no reception.
I have successfully managed to 'create a new network' via the Airport Express and the signal strength is 100% but for some reason if I try to reconfigure the device to extend the existing network I get no improvement at all from the (zero) signal I was receiving before.
Am I doing something wrong? Or is there an additional step I am missing?
I could live with having a secondary network but what I would really like to achieve is Home Sharing from my main computer, so that I can access my photos, movies and music etc. from iTunes on the big screen. If the computer exists on another network my iPad, iPhone and AppleTV can't see/use the media from that room.

Are these the steps you used?
To create a wireless extended network, you must place any extended Wi-Fi base stations within range of the primary Wi-Fi base station.
Start with the device that will be configured as the primary Wi-Fi base station. Then configure your extended Wi-Fi base stations, ensuring that each is within direct range of the primary Wi-Fi base station.The physical location of extended Wi-Fi base stations will vary according to the building environment and may require some experimentation.
If you have configured your Wi-Fi base stations in the past, it may be helpful to do a factory default reset of each Wi-Fi base station that will be part of the wireless extended network before you begin.
Configuring the primary Wi-Fi base station
Power on all 802.11n Wi-Fi base stations and allow them time to appear in the AirPort Menu Extra.
Open AirPort Utility (On a Mac, choose Go > Applications from your desktop, click the Utilities folder, then open AirPort Utility. In Microsoft Windows, choose Start > All Programs > AirPort to start AirPort Utility).
Select the primary Wi-Fi base station in the Base Station Chooser, then click Continue. Note: If you see a message appear that indicates that the Wi-Fi base station has been reset, click Cancel to continue.
Click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar.
Click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode menu.
Select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Enter a Wireless Network Name.
Optional: By default, Wireless Security is set to None so that no password will be required to join the network. We recommend you click on the Wireless Security menu, select WPA2 Personal, and create a password between 8 and 63 characters long.
From the Radio Channel Selection menu, select Automatic.
Click Update.
The next window may indicate that there are some problems. Resolve the problems, then click Update.
You are now ready to add extended Wi-Fi base stations to your network.
Configuring an extended Wi-Fi base station
Place any extended Wi-Fi base stations within range of the primary Wi-Fi base station
Ensure that all 802.11n Wi-Fi base stations are powered on and allow them time to appear in the AirPort Menu Extra

Assuming that you have the model A1264 or A1392 version of the Express, it must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule to be able to extend it correctly.
A good general location would be a point that is about half way between the Time Capsule and other area that needs more wireless coverage.
You will use AirPort Utility on your computer to configure the Express. An iPhone or iPad could be used as well.
We can provide more help....if you need it....but we'll need to know what version of AirPort Utility that you are using on your computer....or whether you want to use an iPhone or iPad to setup the Express.

How can I set up an older airport express using the newest airport utilities? Seems like there isn't an option to set this up. Normally you could add/set up this in the airport setup assistant- but that doesn't exsist any longer.

Unfortunately you can't, since Apple dropped support of the older AirPorts with AirPort Utility 6.x.
Using some workarounds....not supported by Apple.....you might be able to download and install an older version of AirPort Utility that would allow you to administer the older AirPort.

Need to set-up an older macbook with a different email for my husband to use

I have 2 mac notebooks, 1 older macbook + 1 new macbook air both were set-up with me as the admistrator. I want to set up the older mac book for my husband to use. Right now both computers are set to my email and have me as an administrator - they both maintain all of my settings for example, the Safari bookmarks are the same on both computers. We did download OX Lion on the macbook and my husband does have an Apple ID . What else do I need to do to separate the computers so we each have our own? We share an iTunes account so that is not an issue.

These are the directions of OS 10.7. Some of the details are different on other OS.
1. On your husband's computer, go to System Preferences / Users & Groups and click the padlock to unlock.
(U & G was called Accounts in older OS - not sure what you have on that older Macbook.)
2. Click the + sign. That will give you a new pane.
3. In New Account, select Administrator ( the default is "Standard").
4. Complete all the other fields.
After this is done, close that pane. Now back in U & G, select Login Options.
Set Automatic login to your husband's name.
Restart the computer, and select your husband's name. Check that all is well.
You can now, if you wish, go back to U & G, unlock and select your own name and click the - sign. That will remove your name from the computer.
You will also need to configure Mail for your husband's email with his password. When he first clicks on Mail he will be guided through the setup steps.

How can I set up an external monitor to extend my screen in windows 7 bootcamp? I have updated bootcamp to the latest version. The monitor I have works while I am using Mac OS X. While in bootcamp the monitor is dectected and I am able to select the settings and displays however the external monitor remains alseep. I hooked it up using a mini display port to VGA adapter. Any suggestions?

On your Windows desktop right click and select Screen resolution from the menu. You should see a window like this:
Make sure you select Extend and then set your resolutions for each monitor.
If this does not work for you try asking on a Windows forum about extending displays to a second monitor.

Thanks. I had tried that, but was still having problems. Then I realized that I was using three addresses on both devices. Once I changed it to only one email on one iPad and a different email on the other, it worked great. Your message encouraged me to dig deeper and think differently. It worked. Thanks again!
