Setting up and Sharing an External Drive on a network

Ok, I'm either the biggest idiot or OSX is not as easy as OS9.
We are in the process of switching all of our computers to OSX. So we are doing the switch one computer at a time. We started with the an eMac that we use as our server. We did a clean install of OSX 10.3.9 and setup a new clean external HD to use as the sharing point (the eMac itself does not have enough HD space). When we were running OS9 on the eMac and using another hard drive as the sharing point, all I had to do was turn file sharing on and make the HD sharable in the "Get Info" box. Was able to see the HD on the network with no problem.
But now in OSX I do the same thing, but all I can see on the network is the sharable Public folder. I'm very frustrated. Is there something I need to do to the HD in OSX that you didn't have to do in OS9? I need to make this new HD networkable before I go and transfer all the old server files onto it and before I start switching the other computers to OSX. Can anyone help? It seems like an easy thing to do, but for the life of me I'm stumped.
Thanks
Paul

On the server eMac turn Sharing on. Be sure to use a single word name for the computer that is less than 20 characters (no special characters.) You should see a note with the connection address for the server, e.g., afp://192.168.0.3.
On the client machine select Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu. In the window that appears you can enter the connection address provided on the server machine or you can simply click on the Browse button. In the case of the latter another window will open in which you should see the shared server. Double-click to mount. An authentication dialog will appear. You can log in as guest or into a designated account with a password. The account must exist on the server machine. As a guest login you will have read-only access.
You should find these instructions also by using Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu.

  • My plan.Is it possible?External drive for a network!

I have an eMac.I just purchased a Western Digital 250 Gig firewire external hard drive.I haven't formatted it yet.I have some questions.I want to store my iTunes folder,iPhoto folder,my iMovie folder, and back up my internal eMac hard drive on it.How do I do this?I plan on buying an intel mini and use the external drive as a network drive to share these files. What format should I use to share this drive,if possible.

You should use the Disk Utility to format the drive in one of the Mac OS Extended variants, and use an application such as this one to back up your hard disk. To share the drive with another computer, either disconnect it and plug it into the other machine, or install SharePoints on the computer the drive is connected to and start Personal File Sharing from the Sharing pane of System Preferences.

  • External drive access via network

I have two computers connected via wired network
When i first upgraded to leopard, i could access external hard drives connected to one computer from the other computer, now the drives do not appear, even though i have specified them as shared folders.
    any ideas?

having the same problem. apple seems to be clueless as to why this 10.5.1 has a problem accessing external drives that are networked via hub by a rj-45 connector. i manage a small outfit an have another mac that runs 10.4.11 the networked external storage drive shows up fine. when i've tried to connect to the external from 10.5.1 no such luck. what is interesting is that 10.5.1 may connect or may not depending on the day. when it does connect it's buggy. it may show up 2 or 3 hours later under the shared option in the left column or the shared column will not show up at all. my next step is to return to 10.4.11.

My apple tv stuck at setting date and time. Also when connecting yo network doesn't ask for network password

I just went through this last night. (Aug 15, 2013)
What I did to get back up and running. This is not the first time I have lost the network connection with my Apple TV 3
Products effected: Apple TV 3 and Home Sharing (My Apple TV 1 was not effected)
Power down (unplug) the Apple TV and power down your router ( in my case, it is a FIOS router, flipping the on/off works fine).
    Power both items back up.
At this point, I usually can reenter my Apple ID and PW. and reconnect Home Sharing.  But for some reason I was unable to reconnect last night but was able to get it reconnected in the morning. I was jut to tired to deal with it last night.
A new issue that is was able to fix after a good nights sleep.
I did figure out, (after trying to reenter my ID and PW many times and having it tell me that my ID and PW was wrong), that when using the Apple TV on screen keypad to type in the user ID. DO NOT use the ".com" keypad button. Instead type out each character for .com. ( or what ever ending you use for your ID account.)
Once I typed out my full ID and PW. everything is back to 100%

  • Sharing Itunes library and backup on external drive

Would appreciate if anyone can offer help on their experiences of external / NAS drives. I've been looking for the best solution to move my entire Itunes library to an external drive that I can put on the network so can have access from PC's, Mac and Iphone. Just recently moved to new MBP but still have PC's in home.
Have looked at varying solutions and think I've got it narrowed down to going for either QNAP  TS212 NAS or dedicated Iomega Network hard drive but seem to come over a lot of conflicting reports of these items not working well with MAC, particularily some comments on the use of Iomega which is the more cost effective solution.
A little background was planning on 2TB drives and partioning for Itunes library, Time Machine backups and PC backups. Have the S/W on MAC to read/write NTFS.
From my research the dedicated NAS would be appear to be the best answer but a lot more expensive than a network drive.
Can anyone advise of a network drive that they have experienced working well for this type of configuration?
Also is there any issues with syncing Iphone to an external networked library?
    Any Advice Appreciated
    Thanks

    Trev,
changing iTunes media folder location via preferences > advanced tells iTunes where to put new additions to your library, not where the current content is.
also, with your library now on the NAS, you must make sure the NAS is mounted on your desktop before launching iTunes.
... still showed an issue with the file locations and the exclamation marks.
you may have done something wrong initially (during re-locating your library to the NAS) because the exclamation marks usually appear when media files were moved using the finder and iTunes lost track of their location.
you might be able to use this script:
    iTunes Track CPR v1.3
This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx)."

  • Can't set up and share a hard drive

I ' ve just purchased a new Airport extreme, I've set up the network ok, I pluged an external drive to  the airport extreme, when to Airport utility disks, enable file sharing, secure  sharing disks: with accounts and I don't know what to do next?
    Please advise.
    Many thanks
    Mehdi

Hopefully, the hard drive was formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Open the Finder or Macintosh HD and look for the AirPort Extreme icon under the SHARED heading on the left. Click on the AirPort Extreme icon and folder representing your hard drive will appear to the right. Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop.
You may need to enter the account information for each user the first time that you connect using Connect As in the upper right hand corner of the window in the center of the screen.
If you do not see the AirPort Extreme icon, the USB port on the AirPort Extreme may not be supplying enough power for the drive....even if the drive has its own power supply. Try a powered USB hub to supply more power to the hard drive.

  • Sharing my external drives

Hi, is it not possible for me to share my external drives using osx? I would like a few other computers to be able to access the files on the external disk connected to my mac.

"Ah, so Sharepoints isnt an application which does the sharing, its just a front end to the sharing - so I don't need it running or add it to my login launch apps, I can just set it up once and then close it - potentially even if I delete the app the shares will still be there (obv i wont delete it, but i just wanna understand its role). Out of curiosity, can I ask where you would setup the shares without any 3rd party apps?"
Sharepoint is jsut a gui front end for editing the configuration of shares and adding users and groups for access rights to those shares. Whitout it you would:
    Create user/groups: /Applications/Utillities/Netinfo Manager
Create/Edit SMB Shares: edit the file /etc/smb.conf
    Create/Edit AFP Shares: /Applications/Utilities/Netinfo Manager
Additionally instead of using Netinfo Manager you could also use the comand line interface niutil adownload Server Admin Tools from apple which for this purpose will work with client versions of OS X. And you could always install SWAT the web based gui front end for SAMBA (osx's SMB server).

  • AirPort Extreme and shared USB Hard Drive

I received an AirPort Extreme for Christmas with the intent of using it to share a network Hard Drive and Printer between the multiple machines on our home network. I've finally gotten it set up with Bonjour on the PC's, and the AirPort Utility on all machines. It's connected via ethernet cable to a Dell PC, and wirelessly to an iMac, a Dell Laptop, my iPhone and a PS3. Internet functionality is great for all devices.
My next step was to connect a Seagate 750GB External USB Hard Drive to the APE. This drive was previously connected to the Dell PC, and was formatted as NTFS. I went through the hassle of converting it to FAT32, I connected it to the router, and both Dell's and the iMac can see the drive. I haven't checked if the PS3 can see it yet, but since I haven't found Bonjour for the PS3, I'm not holding my breath. The iPhone - well, mine isn't jailbroken at the moment.
A few quick hints I learned from doing a lot of web surfing and trial-and-error. These could save people a LOT of time...
+ Don't format a external drive as either an Apple Drive (HFS+) or as a Windows Drive (NTFS) if you plan on using data off it on both a Mac and a PC. Windows won't read HFS+ without a converter, APE won't accept NTFS. It needs to be FAT32 as this is nearly universal.
+ Windows will only format a maximum of 32GB as FAT32. It's a stupid limit, and you have to jump hoops to get it to do a larger drive size.
+ Use the Disk Utility on the Mac to erase the drive and reformat it as an MS-DOS partition. It will work up to a drive of about 2TB according to what I've read. On the Mac, MS-DOS partition = FAT32, and it formatted my 750GB drive as a single 750GB partition.
Now, I've begun the task of copying all our media to the drive. Copied a few pictures, no problem. Copied a few MP3's, no problem. Where the problems start is in trying to copy movies to the drive. We have ripped most of our DVD's to DivX / H.264, to keep the kids from destroying the DVD's (trust me, DVD's scratch EASY in the hands of a 5-year old). So I have about 50 movies to transfer, each around 1GB in size.
Each time I try to transfer a movie to the drive, I get an error "*Error Copying File or Folder*" which displays the message "*Cannot copy BlahBlahBlah: The specified network name is no longer available.*" This also results in the HDD becoming unavailable to the other machines on the network. I've had to un-plug and then re-plug the APE a few times to get the HDD to work again. Sometimes, the copy actually does work, even though I get this message. I know the easy work-around is to connect the HDD directly to the PC with the files on it and transfer them that way, but I shouldn't have to do that - it should just work.
I'm wondering if anyone else has any kind of a similar experience? It appears that I can stream music and video from the drive easily enough, it's the writing to the drive that seems to be the issue. Thanks in advance...
    Best Regards,
    Jeff

I would think you would have better luck formatting it as HFS+ (Macintosh Extended File System). You'll still be able to see it from your non-Mac PCs.

  • Best way to set up partitions on 250GB external drive

    Hi all,
I've decided to go with an Iomega eGo 250-GB FireWire portable drive to back up my iBook's hard disk (30 GB) plus to store my photos and maybe hold a bootable copy of OS9.
This is my first time using an external drive, so I don't really know how to go about setting things up.
What would be the best way to set up the partitions on the external drive?
    1) I know I should create a 30GB partition for the iBook backup, but what about for the remaining volume? Is it best to leave it as a single large 200GB partition, or split it into two 100GB chunks? Other than the clone of my iBook, I'll mainly be storing photos (at the moment no more than around 10-12GB).
    2) I don't yet have a huge iTunes collection, but if I later want to store iTunes music that doesn't fit on my internal drive, is it fine to put it in the same partition as the photos, or would it be preferable to create a separate partition?
    3) If I want to install OS9 on the drive, how much space should I allot to it? Would this enable me to run legacy apps on my iBook?
    4) Does it matter how I name the partitions (i.e. should the name for my iBook back-up be the same as the original volume or should it be different?)
    5) As I still don't know exactly what I need, If today I decide to create only 30GB partition to backup the iBook, can I later partition the remaining space without having to start all over again?
    6) Also, the drive came out of the box with Mac OS Extended format. Is this the best format or is there another that would be better?
    Thanks for any advice

The answer to both question is that it's completely up to you. Partitioning or not partitioning won't affect operation significantly.
    3) If I want to install OS9 on the drive, how much space should I allot to it? Would this enable me to run legacy apps on my iBook?
The iBook G4 can not boot from OS 9 so you would only be able to run OS 9 in the "classic" environment.
    4) Does it matter how I name the partitions (i.e. should the name for my iBook back-up be the same as the original volume or should it be different?)
    No

There are a few tools which promise the ability to change the partitioning without destroying the data on the drive. But you should never do this without making a backup of the data on the drive. Data loss can easily happen and in a big way.
    6) Also, the drive came out of the box with Mac OS Extended format. Is this the best format or is there another that would be better?
    That is the best format.

  • Time machine and files on external drive

When I first got my MacBook Pro, I left some old files on the external drive that I had been using for files. But then when I set TM up, I used that external drive, not realizing that I can no longer retrieve files except through TM. Now, that TM has filled up, I need to reset some things and do it right this time. I figure I will need to erase the entire drive and start over with partitions.
Am I out of luck to retrieve those files that were not associated with TM? If not, let me know how to find those files.
    thanks

Technically you can but it is not a very good idea at all. The reason it is a flawed idea is if the HD fails (not really if but when) you will have defeated the whole idea of backup. A failure means you will lose the data files you stored on it and it's backup! A good backup plan has at least 2 forms of backup because backups can fail too. I would strongly recommend getting at least one additional external HD and use it for storing the data files you wanted off the internal HD and use the second for a Time Machine backup drive.
Personally I have 3 external HD's attached to my computer. Disk 1 is my Time Machine backup, Disk 2 is a Bootable Clone of my internal HD and Disk 3 stores my music, photography and movie libraries.
Please read these articles, they will discuss different backup strategies and I think you will see that each suggest redundant backups.

  • Issue with Time Machine and WD Elements external drive

I am experiencing continuous problems with Time Machine set to back up to a WD Elements 1TByte external disk; appears to backup files perfectly but I'm plagued by recurring message 'The disk was not ejected properly...'. Dealer assures me that the disk is fine. No problem if Time Machine is disabled. But then I have no back up...

That indicates that the problem may not involve Time Machine at all.
To be sure everything else is ok, verify your internal HD and repair the WD drive, per #A5 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting
If the problems persist, try different port(s), cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may only make marginal/intermittent contact in another).  Also make sure the WD's power cable is snug and secure, and it's plugged-in to a good power source.

  • Re-setting Read&Write permissions on external drive?

I have a 40GB external drive on which I backed up my "Documents" on a Windows machine (now discarded). Now that I switched to a Mac (thank God) I would like to use the "old" external drive, but I only have "Read Only" permissions and no lock icon to unlock and reset the disk permissions.
Would greatly appreciate advice on making this disk writable again. Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Veit

Select and right (control) click on the disk icon for the drive. From the contextual menu, select +Get Info+. At the bottom of the info window is +Sharing and Permissions+ where you can change permissions.
However, if the Windows drive is using NTFS, you will only be able to Read it. Mac OS X cannot Write to an NTFS-formatted drive. If this is your situation, you should copy off your valuable data on the drive and reformat it as +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ using Disk Utility (Erase tab). Be sure to select the entire DRIVE in the sidebar, and not the volume indented below the drive.

  • Set mail folder on an external drive

Does anyone know if it's possible to keep the Mail folder on an external drive. I'm wondering 'cause I use POP mail with Eudora and I like to keep my mail on an external drive. That way when I move to different computers I just bring my external drive with me and all my e-mail comes too. I'd use IMAP but my host doesn't give me enough room to house all my e-mail. I like Eudora but am worried since they are no longer going to be supported and thought I'd give Mail a try. Has anyone heard of this working or if there are any tutorials out there on setting up Mail to read from an external drive? Thanks so much.
    -NifflerX

sorry, you are quite right! It IS possible by using symbolic links! I should have thought of that right away.
    here is what you do.
Quit Mail and move the folder homedirectory/Library/Mail to your external drive. After that's done move the original folder to some other location outside homedirectory/Library like the desktop or simply delete it.
open terminal and enter the following commands:
    *cd ~/Library*
    *ln -s /Volumes/"externaldrivename"/Mail Mail*
Substitute the name of your external in the above.
Also, the above command assumes that you moved the Mail folder to the top level of the external. if not, modify the path accordingly.
That's it! what this does is create a symbolic link to the Mail folder on your external inside the Lbrary folder. I tested it and it works quite well. just make sure that when you start Mail, the external drive is mounted.
To undo this, trash the symbolic link we created and move the mail folder back to ~/Library.
