Setting up AP Extreme n without it being connected to the Internet

Is it possible to set up the new AirPort Extreme Base Station (N) (as a one-bas-station network) to give me access to a hard disk and one or more printers, but without it being connected to the Internet?
I have tried setting up an AirPort network using WDS - with two AP Express base stations (one as the main base station, one as a remote), and a new APEXt n base station (as a remote). However, this will not work - well, the APEXt n will not join the network. I gave up, and set up a WDS network using just the two AP Express base stations. have detailed my trials and tribulations in a post in this thread:

However, I have just found a post that tells me that the APEXt (both g and n types) base stations cannot be used in client mode, which I presume is what I have been trying to do when using WDS to connect the two AP Express base stations and one of the newest AP Extreme base stations - as described above... So, back to my original question - should I be able to use my AP Extreme (n) without having to connect it to the Internet? And if it won't be set up that way, what might I be doing wrong - or is there something wrong with the AP Extreme base station?

No, WDS is not client mode. The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) can join a network using WDS.

Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

Can I use apple TV on home network with time capsule or Airport Xtreme without being connected to the internet?

I'm wondering if I can use Apple TV to play movies and slide shows on my TV, play music over my sound system and print from my devices (Iphone 4S, iPad and MacBook pro 2011) by using an Airport Xtreme or Time Capsule (to back up the devices) if those devices are not connected to the internet. Can anyone advise pls? Reason for this is that I work on a moving ship and don't have an internet connection to speak of for much of the time (and if I do it's a wireless system that I need to pay by the minute and that is too slow to support the Apple TV), but would all the same like to create a wireless environment where my devices can interact with each other. I seem to get conficting info and a rep at the apple store in Honolulu told me that you cannot use Airport Xtreme or Time Capsule without an internet connection (it was busy, he may have misunderstood my question).

Don't try to home share it.. as that is dependent on using Apple ID.
Just airplay to the ATV.. iTunes: Using AirPlay
The movie should play exactly as your doing music.. but get rid of the whole home share if that is causing issues.. there is no mention of needing home share in the above..
If you still have issues you might need to do it other ways.. like export the movie from itunes.. and play it using vlc which should allow you to stream it to the apple TV using airplay.
That is a bit tricky and I have not used that setup but it should work.

If you have a hunt around you should find it fairly easy to do.. but straight airplay should work.. there is a very recent update to ATV which might help it with airplay.

I was given an iMac desktop computer, operating system OSX 10.4.8 (2011). The network admin utility is not compatiable with my airport extreme router, and I am unable to connect to the internet to update the software. This linksys bridge is the safest solution since it doesn't require any Mac OS drivers.
Airport ExpressAirport Express is an external unit and you can configure it as a bridge. 802.11n ( I bevieve you will need a more modern version of Mac OS X to configure. Sadly, Apple uses a configuration program to configure, not a web browser. )

II'm trying to set up my AirPort Extreme in the field without an Internet connection so that devises can communicate wirelessly but there aren't any IP addresses being generated

Just run the AE in router mode.. if you have difficult with the setup do it completely manually..
This is how I do it.
Airtport Utility can't find Airport Time Capsule on either of my 2009 Macs
As long as the AE is running in DHCP and NAT mode it will produce IP addresses.. however you cannot turn off WAN.
You could give it a static IP .. so set to static instead of dhcp if you like.. eg.
DNS and WAN errors.. double NAT, Ethernet unplugged, etc.. so it makes no real difference..
The AE will function fine as router (Wireless AP) to your network however..
Just ignore all the errors.

I have 2 Star Micronic Ethernet connection printers that I hope to operate using a POS software interface called Ambur.
The program is pretty straight forward and while my Airport Extreme was WAN ethernet connected to my D-Link Router, I had the program and printers integrated and operating surprisingly easily.
My issue is that I don't have internet available at the restaurant, so I need to create a network without an internet connection.
I did the hard reset and the rest.
Now I have the same configuration, but not connected through the router, trying to acheive the same result, but its not connecting.
I've tried programming the software with every IP address, including the ones that worked while connected to the other router, to no avail.

I have a 2TB time capsule that was connected to a DSL internet connection and was used to back up my Apple laptop and my iMac. I switched to a cable internet provider to get faster speed. I was unable to get the time capsule to connect to the new cable wi-fi network. Since I dont really need the time capsule to provide an internet connection, can I ust set it up as a local network just to back up my computers wirelessly?

When I plugeed the time capsule into the new routerI purchased, the time capsule worked perfectly. I am stilll puzzled as to why the time time capsule didn't work when I plugged it directly into the modem. In summary it works perfectly when plugged into the netgear router which I connected to the cable modem, but I couldn't plug it directly in to the cable modem and have it be my primary router.

Why can't you use both your USB ports at the same time? If the dongle is a bit fat, a bit of jiggling might work, it doesn't necessarily have to be all the way in. Hold it still though. I don't know of any way to update the software without an internet connection, sorry.

It's actually not a problem. When you reinstall and sign in to the Application Manager, one of your previous active installation will be cancelled. If that turns out to be the wrong one, simply it sign back in again. That will give you the two active installations you are allowed.

I have an iPhone 4 and an old router laying around. Sadly, there is no actual internet connection in the house, but I want to be able to stream from my iPhone to an Apple TV. Can I just plug in the router and use (I think its called the LAN?) that the router puts out to connect the two devices over Airplay? I wouldnt need an Internet connection for Netflix or anything, I just want to mirrior my iPhone onto my TV.

I'm an plug and play, aka, intuative Apple OS "cooler", or a guy that has been most likely to "tilt" even the most bug free Apple software and maybe even hardware, and unqualified to give advice, except for the fact that I had my iPad and then my iPhone boosted a year ago. May I ask, did you ever log in to your app; "Find my iPhone" and go through the registration process? If you did, you would have had to have registered it into "mobileme" or the ancestor of mm, the name escapes me, or you would have had to "iCloud it", the implications of which, I'm just barely scratching the surface (<--ADHD) but that's the kind of thing I would have, and did do, even though I didn't have a clue, what it was for, or understand how to incorperate it into my resources at the time, I'm just a "register here" factory, that registers first and askes questions later. If you did this, I suspect you may have a reason to hope a a GPS kite string that millions of theft targets like us are longing to see, return your device, for Christ Sakes! i do know that, if you did you, can access the signal blip, location from any smart device, with internet access and your log in/password, that you will need to remember, track down, or if all else fails, ask Support to assist, by in my case jogging my memory, until it came to my low watt brain, the log in id, I had used.

I have an apple tv, iPad 3 and airport express. Im at school and the apple tv is technically not supported by the network. Ive read that one could use AirPlay to apple tv via AE.

The router does provide WIFI, but the thing is the Apple TV will be out of reach. I want to avoid having two routers / networks. That's why Apple TV is hardwired. The AirPort (also hardwired) should only work as a receiver for the iPhone - streaming iPhone content to the Apple TV.
BOTH the Apple TV and the AirPort Express are AirPlay "speakers." That is, you can stream from iTunes to either device. You don't need both if the Apple TV is hardwired to an existing router. That provided the necessary networking for AirPlay to stream over. Wi-Fi is NOT required for AirPlay if you have a wired connection between the AirPlay "server" (i.e., iTunes host) and the AirPlay "speaker."
The Apple TV would work as a "receiver" for your iPhone.
If AirPlay is an application layer software, how may two AirPlay device communicate directly? Normally all communication is relayed by the access point.
AirPlay is a streaming protocol that runs over TCP/IP. AirPlay "speakers" DO NOT communicate with each other directly. The basic communication path is between an AirPlay "server" and an AirPlay "speaker" or multiple "speakers." Again the path between them can be either be wired or wireless or some combination of each.
