Setting Up Cable Box for Surround Sound

I have a Pace Set Top box, the T-7900 speakers and the Audigy 2 ZS.
The Pace box has a left and right output and a digital optical output. Is there anyway of setting up this system to enable surround sound?
I could obtain a 3.5mm converter to connect the L and R to the wired remote. If I used the CMSS 3D feature of the Audigy would the sound then be in surround?
I hope this is understandable!
Feel free to suggest any alternative setups that could work.
Thanks!

You'd have to have the Y-adapter input into the Audigy to use the CMSS, I think. Inputting it through the T7700 line-in will have it play stereo.

  • Trouble exporting for surround sound

I have the 6 files in my timeline as provided by the audio facility. I export each file seperatley then assign the proper speakers in Compressor. After this it still doesnt sound right.
I've been reading on the fourm and the manual but I'm still unclear as to the audio output settings for my sequence. I've tried setting to 6 outputs in both "dual mono" and "stereo". Am I missing a step or setting somewhere? Can someone give a step by step?

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time...
By saying it doesn't sound right, it seems liek the mix was off. I think initialy I exported out of FCP wrong. First off, I exported as a QT movie (audio only) and I think each of the six channels was a stereo mix, which made it sound basically mono.
I called the audio engineer to confirm the speaker selection. Then last night I exported each individual channel as an .aif , ending up with six .aif files.. Then assigned the proper speaker assignments in compressor (import Surround sound group). I then encoded with the 5.1 compressor setting. I wasnt able to play it yet because it was 2am...the wife wouldn't ahve appreciated that .
Does this sound like a proper workflow?

  • Looking for surround sound

I have a set of 5.1 speakers for my computer, but I am only getting stereo sound from the Front L/R and Sub channels when listening to music(mp3's). I've read this is because this format is for stereo sound only and so it won't play on the other channels.
So I was looking into getting the Creative DDTS Decoder. This should ouput any sound from my computer and other devices to full surround sound right? Is there any alternative to this? I would think that there are sound cards out there that would do this, I have an older model Soundblaster Live! series card currently. Any help with my situation?

    Hey thanks for the replies!
Through the Creative AutoUpdate check (and using the model # SB000) it looks like I have the Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 card. I just did an upgrade installing the Sound Blaster Live! package, but that did not include the Playcenter app that nvidiot was referring to.
Should I download the Playcenter download for Creative Sound Blaster Live! cards (ver 3.02.70) to find this CMSS option?

  • HT1454 i connect my iPad to my tv with hdmi cable but the surround sound from the receiver is not working why is this?

i want to play my ipad on through my tv and receiver to get surround sound (not using the tv speakers) I connect the htmi cable to my tv and ipad do i need more cable to get my surround sound to play the audio?  i thought hdmi did it all.

if you have a 6th or 7th gen classic, you'll have a have the video out cable from apple.  only the 5th gen will play with a generic 3 connector video out cable.

  • Using ATV2/3 with non-HDMI Receiver and theater projector and also need iTunes downloaded movies to work.   I'm thinking to use the Toslink digital out for surround sound and an HDMI to RGB converter for video but not sure the iTunes DRM will prevent?

I have a theater with a Runco projector but non HDMI. alas, my receiver is non HDMI. Changing electronics and projector is a non-starter.
I would like to be able to buy HD movies on iTunes and watch them by streaming via Apple TV3. My plan is to capture surround sound from the TosLink digital out, which my preamp/receiver can handle. For the video, I need to convert the HDMI to RGB component to feed my receiver.
This is where iTunes DRM and HDCP issues might arise. I am under the impression that I need an non-HDMI compliant converter so that ATV3 can even talk to my receiver. It is my understanding that this is possible and takes care of the HDCP issue. But what about the DRM issue? All I want to do is buy and watch HD movies, no bad intentions. I find it incredible that iit might not be possible.
Anyways, is there a 100% certain approach even if it costs up to $300-400. Again, changing hardware is a non-starter so please avoid the obvious "buy an HDMI amp and projector".
    Thanks

  • Soundcard for surround sound

I have a G5 tower, I didn't get a seperate sound card for it, but would I need one in order to design a soundtrack to be 5.1?
I want to map certain sound clips to front, back, sub, etc. can I do thise without a 3rd party soundcard or do I need something else, (does STP) even handle surround sound mapping?

STP doesn't support surround sound actually. There's some workarounds, particularly using buses but it's not very elegant. Hopefully, the next version of Soundtrack Pro will include that because surround sound is the future of post-prod.
If you want do to surround sound now, you could check Logic Pro, altough it's a bit overkill for your needs; or Digital Performer, altough it's CPU-hungry.
Of course, you will need an audio interface with multi-outs, I'd suggest you check the Focusrite Saffire. You will also need a surround monitor system, if you don't want to spend too much, you could check some M-Audio speakers. I'd rather use Mackie 624 but they're not in the same price range!

  • Pioneer AV Receiver connection for surround sound

How would I be able to setup for a 5.1 sound output from the iMac to a pioneer AV receiver? I am only getting a 2.1 output always. I used to play the same video with a 5.1 output from a PC. However, am not able to do the same with my new iMac (late 2010 model). I connected my iMac from the miniDisplay port to the receiver using a HDMI adapter.

Well as of now since the macbooks dont have HDMI, the way to get the best quality audio is over optical.
Head over to www.monoprice.com and search there for the best deals on high quality cables.
What you want is a mini-toslink to regular toslink cable.
here is a link for a 12ft one for $3 plus shipping.

  • I want to export a video file with 6 mono track for surround sound and the 7th track to be stereo.

I want to give my friend a video file, so when he imports it into avid, premiere, final cut etc. he would recieve 6 mono tracks (L,R,C,LE,Ls,Rs) and the last one to be stereo. but every time i export it comes as 7 mono tracks. and in the setting thats the only option

i think you would have to go with 8 mono tracks, 6 for the 5.1 mix and 2 more for the stereo. that or try to use 4 stereo pairs, but that would combine parts of the 6 mono (5.1 mix).

  • Guide : Getting 5.1 surround sound. Audigy 2

    Hi all
I thought I would write up a really quick but effecti've and simple guide for owners of the Audigy2 ZS and seeing how its Xmas time, I can assume a few lucky boys and girls may have this awesome card under the tree.
Most of whats covered should work with all creative products.
(Sorry, but I WILL NOT cover any info regarding encoding media or the like that will conflict with copyright laws)
This guide is for setting up your Creative Audigy 2 ZS for surround sound 5. reproduction and information in regards to required Filters/Codecs. I have not included any advanced set up options or the like as the ZS with the set ups I have incluced here will cover it out of the box.
One of the most common issues people may have with 5. not fuctioning correctly while playing a DVD movie ( Mpeg ) or any multi channel media that is 5. encoded, has to do with Codecs/Filters.
Most media players will not decode all AC3filters/Mpeg, thus require extra filters/codecs/plugins to be installed.
Ok , the first thing to do is ensure your sound card and speakers are set up correctly.
Most common speaker sets have 3 plugs that go in the back of your card .
EG, Logitech X-530. Pink = Front Centre.Black = Rear left and right. Green = Front left and right.
Ensure they are in the correct place and are tightly fitted.Ensure your sound card is secure and tightly in place.Make sure your speaker cables are tidy and not a big tangled mess.
Ensure in device audio controls that SPDIF passthrough is NOT ticked as this is for optical output ( the ZS pro with rack fuction )
Update to the latest drivers an media source ap
    ps.
A few little things to set up first in Creative Mixer Control Panel to ensure cleaner sound:
Lower Master and Wav volume in Creative mixer to about 90% as to avoid any over dri've disstortion.Lower Master Bass Volume to about 90% to avoid over powering the bass.Ensure that your speaker settings Windows control panel and Creative speaker settings match your speaker set up..
Also run the THX Speaker Callibration test in basic mode.
YOU SHOULD DISSABLE CMSS IN EAX CP IN ORDER TO GET 5. TO FUCTION AS IT SHOULD.
CMSS is to be use only for a MONO or STEREO source/signal. It is for sending the stereo/mono signal ( left and right) to all speakers. This is not 5., mearly it is the same signal sent to all speakers to give you a more rich and vivid sound reproduction of an other wise flat source.
    Turn off any EAX FX.
Things you want to do to ensure stable use:
    SHUT DOWN CTHELPER:
A background task that is a plug-in manager for Creative drivers. A 3rd party manufacturer can use the CTHELPER plug-in interface to produce drivers, add-on features, and fixes that will integrate with a tighter fit with Creative?s sound drivers and utilities. Gi'ven its purpose CTHELPER would normally be classified as a "leave alone" background task. It also allows Creative speaker setup to be synchronized with Windows Control Panel speaker setting. Without it running that check box in Creative speaker setting is not functional (settings are not in sync). Unfortunately there are often problems with CTHELPER, most notably that it can use 00% of CPU time so it's best left disabled unless you REALLY need it .
Type in run "msconfig" and shut down all Creative Start up entries. Infact its proberly best to shut everything down.
NOTE: Any essentinal Software for the proper fuction of devices ,Eg: Razer mouse utils should be left on.
Simple Bios settings to help improve audio and stablity:
Dissable Pallette Snoop.ANY AND ALL shadows for devices, EG VGA BIOS and system bios should be dissabled. If you have the setting for PCI latency in your bios ( AGP boards only ) set it to 64, if its already at 64 try 32 .
Shut down ( remove, reconmended ) any 3rd party tweak apps that run in the background.
EG, Cache Man and any monitoring software.
Ok, now for Filters/Codecs and Plugins.
    A major required Filter is AC3. (ac3filter__0a_rc5)
AC3Filter - it is DirectShow filter for AC3 decoding to play AVI with AC3 audio tracks and MPEG2 (DVD). Required for WMP.
NOTE: If you have DVD software that should play encoded 5. then make sure you have any updates/patches for the player installed and go through the tools/options for the player and ensure its setup correctly to decode AC3filters in the applictions tools menu.
If you use Cyberlink Power DVD you may need to pay an extra fee to get the required AC3filter/MPEG2 decoders to fuction as all 5. sound settings may be greyed out on some dated versions.
InterVideo WIN DVD ( this software suit comes with most "Asus" if not all makes of Mainboards. This suit comes complete with the required codecs/filters so get full surrport for 5. - 6. - 7. out of the box. Note: you must set it up first under audio options as it defualts to 2..
If you use WMP0 you should download and install the AC3filter or get the latest XP codec/filters packs. With out these filters you may not get 5. sound and/or poor reproduction.
    Supported file types:
The following table lists the file types (formats) supported by Windows Media Player .(For files type played by Power DVD or WIN DVD please refer to the makers website or read me file for a detailed list).
File type (format) File name extension .

NOTE: WMP defualts to 2.. To enable 5. run WMP0. Click on tools then point to options. Navigate to DVD then open up the advanced window. In here is everything you need to set things up.
NOTE: If you mess things up simply return to defult settings and start over.
Some common errors you may encounter with WMP.
Error messages are identified by numerical IDs, such as C00D0BC2 and 800704CF. You can determine the ID of a specific error message by clicking the More Information or Web Help button on the error message when you encounter it. The resulting page will indicate the error ID.
    : Error's C00D6A and C00D9A while playing DVD's or MPEG-2 content.
This is directly related to either your current video card drivers or the MPEG-2/DVD decoder you have installed (EG: PowerDVD, Win DVD etc ). Reinstalling and/or uninstalling the MPEG-2/DVD decoder (PowerDVD, Win DVD ) and/or video drivers should fix the problem for you.
You should now be able to re-install you decoder ( Power DVD etc ) and continue its use.
    Erro : C00DAC:

    What are codecs Codecs/Filters.
Codec stands for Coder/Decoder. Basically it is a piece of software or a driver that adds a support for certain video/audio format for your operating system. With codec, your system recognizes the format the codec is built for and allows you to play the audio/video file (=decode) or in some cases, to change another audio/video file into that format (=(en)code).
For example, when you install Windows to your home computer, Windows installs automatically most commonly used codecs into the system, so you don't have to download them separately from their vendors. However there are some codecs that are widely used, but not installed by Windows. Most notably DivX , MPEG-2.
Get all the Codecs/Filters/Plugins you could ever need from:
    http://www.free-codecs.com/AC3_Filter_download.htm (ac3filter__0a_rc5)
    http://www.free-codecs.com/
NOTE: ( XviD-.0.3-2022004 for Divx ) Stand alone codec for playing Divx instead of the Divx full install.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...0/default.aspx
Ok, you now should be all set.
However Codecs/Filters/Plugins are like any other kind of software installed and things can go wrong. If things are not working as they should try the following.
    Download and install "Gspot"
http://gspot.headbands.com/download.htmlBuild 0307 - 23 KB Run the programme and simply point to system and select "List Codecs and other Filters"
Its a no brainer really to know whats what here and how to use it to find out the source of the issue, if you have one. If its red, its bad so you then need to trace the Filter/Codec to its source and remove it.
Here is just one very simple excample you may encounter and how it was fixed.
If you have ffdshow file is missing error pop up while running a player application, first go to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and search for ffdshow.en. Its proberly not here though. If it is just leave it be.
NOTE: ffdshow is used for AVI/Xvid enc/dec source.
To fix this "ffdshow Video Codec file is missing " error Simply uninstall your Xvid codec or your entire DivX programme, or any other Filter/Codec you have installed for playback of DivX files and AVI Video Files.
(Some times it seems a few Codecs/Filters dont get along so you must be aware of what you install).
Cheak "Gspot" again and Filter should be removed from the list.
Now you can reinstall the Xvid filter "XviD-.0.3-2022004" or your desired DivX programme.
Now go back toC:\WINDOWS\system32 and search for ffdshow.en. It should be there if it was not before. If the issue is back try a different version of required Filter.
So, thats just excample of a simple fix that got everything working again. Its not to hard to find out what the problem Codec/Filter is and then its just a case of uninstalling it. You can re-install the Codec/Filter but you should double cheak with "Gspot" and ensure the issue has not repeated itself .
If it has you can try and find out if the issue is related to another type filter causing a conflict or use an alternate Filter/Codec that will perform the same task .
Search for an updated version of required the Codec/Filter also.
Ok, thats pretty much the basics in getting correct and stable 5. sound working the way it should with your new Creative Audigy 2 ZS sound card.
I hope this has been of help.
    Regards,xmn.

  • Surround sound confusion

So what's the story with surround sound?
I have recently bought a Samsung HT-E5500 surround system and have connected the BT Vision box (black one) to it using HDMI. (I have an optical cable at home but haven't connected it.)
I have set the output to 'surround sound' in the BTV menu but I only hear output from two front channels (left and right) when watching TV. I haven't yet tried On Demand films.
I am aware that Freeview HD broadcasts do contain the required data for surround sound, but as BT Vision does not output Freeview HD, only SD, does BTV output the surround channels?
    So the questions are:
(give me the answers in simple terms)
Do TV programmes and films (i.e. On Demand films) watched through BT Vision support 5.1 surround sound output?
If not all channels/films are broadcast in surround, how do I know which ones ARE in surround and which ones are stereo only?
As I currently only have two channels working while watching BTV, what do I need to do to activate the other audio channels? ( I have already set up the option in the BTV menu). Do I need to use the optical cable from BTV box to surround system? Do I need to enable anything on the surround system?
    Thanks!
    Bob

Only HD movies contain a full 5.1 soundtrack depending on how long ago they were made. Note that the new software doesn't yet support 5.1, but if you  have a setting I'm guessing you're still using the old software.
Most SD content, whether that's movies or just standard Freeview, has surround sound encoded into the stereo soundtrack. This doesn't have the full range of proper 5.1, but it's not bad. In order to hear it you will need to enable the Prologic decoder on your surround system (assuming it has one, but it would be a rare beast that hasn't).
In terms of cabling, for full 5.1 you will need the optical, but Prologic surround can be sent over anything.

  • How to get Surround Sound to work With Itunes 7 and Stop Skipping

A common problem for surround sound with itunes 7 appears to come from Creative sound cards. The way to fix this problem is to right click on the volume icon in the taskbar and open the EAX Console. Open the CMSS 3D tab and check the box that says Enable CMSS 3D and set both CMSS and CMSS2 to 0% in the stereo focus slider. It should work. Remember to have the volume slider in itunes at 100%.
If that doesn't work then open the quicktime preferences in the controlpanel/quicktime. Then go to the audio tab, uncheck the safe mode box. Set the rate to 64 kHz and the size to 16 bit. Then set the channels to 5.1
This should all make it work, after hours of struggling i've found these successful settings and am loving it!
For those of you who have sound skipping during transitions----
Go to the preferences of Itunes and go to the Playback tab, disable the crossfading between songs and you should play skip free!!!!

  • 6.1 6700 + audigy 2 zs / surround sound?

    Hi everyone,
I have an audify 2 zs soundcard and a set of creative labs 6.1 6700 speakers.
I have been trying to get it to work for surround sound but I am having a few issues.
Firstly I set the CMSS 3D on under the EAX console so that i can listen to music on all the speakers.
I am hoping that when I am watching a dvd though that it will overwrite this and play it as 5.1 surround.
However the problem I am having is with the rear centre speaker.
I had the switch on the back of the sub set to 5.1 / 6.1 so I would think that this meant the rear centre speaker would work if the dvd had 6.1 sound.
Is this the case, that only certain dvds have 6 channel sound support - or should all dvds now play proper 6 channel surround sound?
I have since switched the sub to 6.1 upmix - and the rear centre now works - but this is not true 6 channel sound as its just mixing the other two rear speakers.
Does anybody know if true 6.1 surround sound is actually possible? or is this upmix all there is?
    Many thanks
    David

What happened is when you installed the new itunes 7 it messed around with all of your files for the sound check and as a result when u are using sound check your speakers will not work correctly (I just fixed this problem). To fix it, simply go into the edit menu, then preferences and then click on the playback tab. In that tab the third box you can check off from the top should be sound check. Simply uncheck that box and you should be fine.
    Good Luck

  • IMac i7 surround sound....

I watched the Avatar DVD on my 27" iMac the other night, wanted to hear it in 5.1 through my Philips HTS3371D sound system. I selected 5.1 in the DVDs menu, but it sounded like stereo- I admit that my physical setup is not optimal for the surround sound option, but I would have thought I would be able to tell the difference between stereo and surround.
I checked the System Preferences/ Sound pane, it said I was connected to the Digital Out of the iMac- I have an Optical cable from the iMac to the Philips system. Sound offered no options to change the settings. So I went to the Audio MIDI Setup app and checked it out. It also says "Digital Out," and offers to Configure Speakers... . This is what I see when I select that:
As you can see, only Stereo is offered. I am at a loss. I cannot definitively say it's not playing in 5.1, but I expected Audio MIDI Setup to say it is playing though all 6 speakers.
Anyone have anything to share about how this works?
    Thanks. Joel.

Sorry for the delay, it's been an amazing week! And preparing for another!
It seems the Philips plays in 5.1 when the DVD is set to 5.1 and the Philips is set to Dolby Pro Logic II, at least for some DVDs. I recognize I don't have the speakers optimally set for surround sound, and was looking to the Mac to change that, but I had the Philips set to 5 Channel Stereo and that does not work for surround. ::grin::
The Audio MIDI Setup does not show anything other than Stereo, no matter what the iMac is sending out to the speakers.
At this point I'm not concerned with iTunes output, I'll save that for another month.
    Thanks. Joel.

  • Wheres my 5.1 Surround sound?

Okay, so here is my issue, and I hope you can help me with it. I have a 27" iMac dual booted with windows 7. I have the audio out through a 3.5 mm to optical (Toslink) cable into my surround sound system. My issue is that the cirrus logic cs4206a driver does not have the option of anything more than 2 channel sound output. I have already tried a couple suggestions on the internet, even wasted 5 bucks on dolby digital live and dts connect pack. Nothing is working and I was told that I could get true 5.1 dolby digital surround sound out of my iMac. If there is anyway possible to do this and I am just missing it. please let me know.
P.S. yes i know that no matter what the iMac cannot send out 5.1 audio signal it is compressed and must be decoded live by my surround sound. And my surround sound system is fully capable of that.
    Thank you

This is what I did to get surround sound,
    - Use a Mini Display Port to HDMI cable and connect the HDMI into the HDMI input on the receiver and the Mini Display to the Mini Display Port on your Mac.
    - Go to System Preferences on your Mac. Click on the "Sound" icon. Then in the "Output" tab, select your Surround System from the menu
    - Then go into Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup. On the left side of the window select HDMI. On the right side it then should say "Source: (your speaker system)"
    - Click the "Configure Speakers..." button in the bottom right of the window. Click the "Multichannel" tab. Then select "5.1 Surround" from the pull down menu. Click on each speaker to provide a test tone to make sure each is connect properly. Then click on "Apply"
    - Last set is to go into the DVD Player. Go to "Preferences" and click on the "Disc Setup" tab. Under Audio at the bottom of the window select "Digital Out - (your speaker system)" from the drop down menu for "Audio output"
