Setting Up Dual NIC Cards? Benefit?

Hello Everyone,
I know that the Mac Pro line comes with Dual NICs and I was wondering how do I set these up to be useful with my Cable Modem and Router? Can they be used to get more speed or are they used together in some other capacity.
I really appreciate anyones help and expertise.
Many Thanks,
Chris

The normal use of dual nic interfaces would be to run double instances of a given server on disparate IP numbers. Dual NIC's are generally employed in order to attach multiple IP addresses to a single machine.
Another potential use for dual NIC's is internet connection sharing, where your Mac Pro acts as a kind of router; again also this could be used for attaching one NIC to print services and the other NIC for LAN/WAN access.
OK, actually there are a whole bunch of good reasons for dual NIC cards, but 'doubling your bandwidth' is really not one of them. Believe me, unless you are on a direct fiber OC-10 20 foot from your ISP's NOC, then your existing single NIC has 1000 times the bandwidth of your incoming WAN connection.
It is likely possible to interleave dual NIC cards between two machines for bandwith purposes; but if that were going to be the canse, just identify one as "in" and the other as "out" (both machines would have to have dual NIC's to make this mean anything) but again, I honestly do not see a real world use for this...

  • Proliant DL380 G5 - Dual nic drops gateway after windows update.

    On yesterday Microsoft windows update updated my DL 380 G5 sever. Part of the update was a nic driver. Needless to say the server didn’t like the update. After the update, the dual nic card will not keep the gateway. I've rolled back the driver but still no luck. Any ideas on how to fix this? My first thought was roll back the driver. Second thought download the drivers from the manufacture but I cannot determine which nic it is. How can I go about finding the exact nic type and name?

  • How to add a second nic card to non global zone

    hi every one
    i have a issue like
    my non global zone has hme0 as the nic card
    i want to add a secondary nic card like pcn0 to the non global zone . how can i add to the nonglobal zone so that both the nic cards should exist in the nonglobal zone
    please tell me the command and procedure for that
    thanks in advance ....

    If your non-global zone is a shared IP zone, then you can add like
    zonecfg -z <zonename>
    add net
    set physical=pnc0
    set address=<IP Address>
    end
    verify
    commit
    exit
    If your non-global zone is an exclusive IP zone, then remember that the interface pnc0 you are adding will be in control of non-global zone exclusively.
    Steps to add it are same as above.

  • Photoshop CS6 have problems with my dual graphics card

    I'm currently using photoshop cs6 on my laptop (hp pavilion dv4 3114 ), and this laptop has dual graphics cards(one is mobile intel hd graphics, the other one is ati hd 6750), it ususlly switches to the faster one when games are running or some software that requires a lot of graphic work. But this time I have already set in the graphics card profile to let photoshop use the faster one, but when I launch photoshop cs6 it tells me that the graphics card is not officially supported, as you can see this in the screenshot.
    Then I turned to photoshop's preference(performence) and found it only identifies the mobile intel hd graphics. I'm currently using photoshop for designing large posters so performence is very important for me. Is anyone know how to solve this problem so that photoshop can run with the highest performence?

    II can't imagine how these computer companies expect to fully integrate GPUs from two different vendors, but they're trying.  To me, knowing a bit about how display drivers are implemented, it seems an impossible task.
    I hve heard (in the context of Macs that have this option) that disabling the low power options so that only the more powerful GPU is active can help.  I don't know if that can apply to your system, but it might give you an idea of a place to start looking.
    Another thing might be to try to find whatever settings it offers for "affinity" and set it so Photoshop and its cousins use just the ATI GPU exclusively.  It might be the "switchover" process that is causing the problems.
    Good luck.

  • Having 2 NIC Cards

    I have installed a second network card in my power G4 and I need to configure this card with a static IP; however, there is no where to do this (or at least I can not find it). I have the on board network card configured and working. Any suggestions?
    I know if I was running os 10 then I could use UNIX commands to do this however I can not afford to do this at the present time.
    Thanks
    Power g4   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi Manikandan,
    You can use two network cards but if you installed B1 when this two network cards has been configured to enable, the B1 application run will have slow performance. So, you must disable one of network cards, restart the B1 server and run the B1 again.
    If you need the NIC card that is already disable, you can enable again. It won't give slow performance.
    my answer is  quoted from SAP note 1135705:
    SAP Business One takes too long to log on users
    Symptom
    SAP Business One client (not installed on the same machine as the
    license service) might take several minutes to log you on successfully due to a delay in establishing a connection with the license server.
    After logon, SAP Business One functions as expected.
    This is due to the fact that the server or PC on which the license server is installed has more than one network card, or there is a dial-up & VPN interface-configured server.
    Note: This can happen when you install the license service on a machine with more than one network card ALREADY installed.
    Installing additional network cards on a single network card machine with a license service already installed might not produce this issue.
    Other terms
    SAP Business One, slow, login, log-in, delay, license, server, NIC, VPN, connection.
    Reason and Prerequisites
    Application error.
    Solution
    This issue is a candidate to be resolved in a future release.
    Until then, you can use one of the following workarounds:
    Disable additional network cards in the Network Connections. Also make sure there is no dialup interface or VPN interface set up, and restart the server. Note that you can re-enable the additional network card after the restart. This will resolve the issue until the next restart.
    Install the license server on a machine with a single network card.
    Disable all network cards, restart the license server and then enable the network cards again.

  • Did I buy the wrong wireless NIC card?

    Hello all .... I have a small home network consisting of 3 laptops and 2 desktops ... They were all connected via a WRT54G router with the one desktop farthest away using a wmp11 wireless NIC ..... this particular desktop is approx 75 - 100 ft away from the router ... so far there's been no problems,  but that one machine always showed EXCELLENT signal strength (when you'd over the cursor over the little wireless icon in the systray) ....
    For some unexplained reason (cause I'm dumb) I decided to purchase a new router, I got the Linksys WRT160N ..... well the machine with the wmp11 wouldn't even boot up any more, let alone communicate with the router. So I ordered a new wireless NIC for it, a wmp600N...which I installed and now at least that machine boots! The machine does connect to my network, and appears to run on the internet fine, however my question is now whenever you check that machines wireless status, it always says signal strengt is "Poor" or "Very Poor". I see now (I don't know why I didn't notice it before) that there is yet another wireless NIC for that router, and am now wondering if I bought the wrong nic card. I'm just wondering why my signal went from always showing EXCELLENT to now showing POOR all the time.
    When I first ordered this router off the Linksys site, I remember distinctly specify "RANGE" as one of my requirements, yet when I received it from Linksys the box was clearly marked it was NOT for range.... so I am sorta confused.

    I guess I am just concerned as there seems to be so many networks (routers) around here, there is always 7 or 8 connections available on the list of avail networks and I am just concerned about that one machine connecting to the wrong router when it is booted up ....
    when I was using the wrt54g, and it always showed "Excellent" and the others always showed poor to very poor (1 or 2 bars) ,,,,,,,
    but now with the new router always showing just one or two bars as well on that one machine .... I worry that it may connect to the wrong thing sometime. This wouldn't be such a worry for me IF there were simply an option to set "Connect to this network ONLY" on the nic,
    but there isn't, just a "Connect to preffered network IF in range" ..........
    Not that it matters here is the whole reason I have these machines and routers on a network is because I am severely disabled with M.S. and getting up and down steps to all my familys machines isn't so easy, and that one machine about 75 feet from me is impossible. So I have them all  networked thru the router, and I use a remote control program (called Radmin) to access the various machines from this one laptop.
    I am starting to wonder if the fact that nothing will work when this router is on 20mhz bandwith at all, is indicative of some sort of problem with the router itself? That is funny as the wrt54g was 20mhz only I beleive, and it worked perfectly!

  • [solved] [Qemu+libvirt] Can't emulate e1000 NIC cards

    Hi,
    I want to emulate 2 e1000 NIC cards. I'm using a virsh template file. I've tried several variantes of the following :
    <interface type='bridge'>
    <source bridge='br0'/>
    <target dev='veth0'/>
    <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/>
    </interface>
    <interface type='bridge'>
    <source bridge='br1'/>
    <target dev='veth1'/>
    <model type='e1000'/>
    <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x04' function='0x0'/>
    </interface>
    I created myself veth0 and veth1 with :
    # ip link add type veth (this create veth0 and veth1 in one cmd, kind of weird)
    # ip link set veth0 up
    # ip link set veth1 up
    I also edited /etc/qemu/bridge.conf :
    allow br0
    allow br1
    But then :
    $ virsh define vm.xml
    $ virsh start myvm
    error: Failed to start domain myvm
    error: failed to retrieve file descriptor for interface: Transport endpoint is not connected
    I also tried to create myseld br0 and br1, and then attach veth0 to br0 and veth1 to br1. Same results. What's wrong in my conf ?
    EDIT : changed title according to WonderWoofy suggestion.
    Last edited by emasculateur (2014-05-25 20:44:24)

    So I finally solved it really easily.
    Instead of :
    $ virsh connect qemu://system
    $ virsh start myvm
    I actually did :
    $ virsh -c qemu:///system
    This gives you a virsh CLI from which I was able to start my VM :
    virsh # start myvm
    I just wonder why virsh -c <domain> and virsh connect <domain> are doing two different things.

  • Add secondary NIC Card to existing VM

    Hi,
    I created some of VMs in Azure and four VMs need to have secondary NIC card, How can I add secondary NIC card to existing VM. I found some post that it cannot add NIC card to existing VM and need to add during VM creation, is it true ?
    How many NIC card supported per VM ?
    thanks
    Keith

    Hi,
    Multi-NIC VMs must be in created in Azure virtual networks. Non-VNet VMs are not supported.
    The current release does NOT support adding or removing NICs after a VM is created. Multi-NIC can only be applied when a VM is created.
    The vmNICs must be added at the time of virtual machine creation. If you have an existing virtual machine that you want to add vmNICs to, you'll need to delete the virtual machine while keeping the VHDs and then create a new virtual machine using the existing
    VHD while adding the new vmNICs as part of the provisioning.
    The table below lists the numbers of NICs corresponding to the size of the VMs:
    VM Size (Standard SKUs)
    NICs (max allowed per VM)
    A3, A6, D3, A8, G3, D12 (4-core, except G3, A8)
    2
    A4, A7, A9, G4, D4, D13 (8-core, except G4, A9)
    4
    All other sizes at this time
    1
    In order to Configure Multi-NIC VM, refer to the below mentioned steps:
    Select a VM image from Azure VM image gallery:
    $image = Get-AzureVMImage -ImageName "a699494373c04fc0bc8f2bb1389d6106__Windows-Server-2012-R2-201408.01-en.us-127GB.vhd"
    Create a VM configuration.
    $vm = New-AzureVMConfig -Name "MultiNicVM" -InstanceSize "ExtraLarge" -Image $image.ImageName –AvailabilitySetName “MyAVSet”
    Create the default administrator login.
    Add-AzureProvisioningConfig –VM $vm -Windows -AdminUserName “<YourAdminUID>” -Password “<YourAdminPassword>”
    Add additional NICs to the VM configuration. There are several things to note about this:
    >> The configuration of the “default” NIC is not set through this cmdlet. Please refer to Step 5.
    >>The SubnetName must match one of the subnets in the intended virtual network.
    >>The Name parameter must be unique within the same VM, but does not represent the names of the NICs                     inside the VM.
    Add-AzureNetworkInterfaceConfig -Name "Ethernet1" -SubnetName "Midtier"
    -StaticVNetIPAddress "10.1.1.111" -VM $vm
    Add-AzureNetworkInterfaceConfig -Name "Ethernet2" -SubnetName "Backend"
    -StaticVNetIPAddress "10.1.2.222" -VM $vm
    Specify the subnet and IP address for the default NIC.
    Set-AzureSubnet -SubnetNames "Frontend" -VM $vm
    Set-AzureStaticVNetIP -IPAddress "10.1.0.100" -VM $vm
    Create the VM your virtual network. Note: The VNet that you specify here must already exist (as mentioned in the prerequisites). The example below specifies a virtual network named “MultiNIC-VNet”.
    New-AzureVM -ServiceName "MultiNIC-CS" –VNetName “MultiNIC-VNet” –VM $vm
    Hope this helps !

  • Dual graphics cards and single 4K display - Mac Pro (late 2013)

    I'm considering a new Mac Pro as my next graphics/development workstation. I see that the new Mac Pros have dual graphics cards (i.e. dual D300, D500, D700.) I was wondering if there is any benefit to having the second graphics card if I only have only one 4K display connected via Display Port 1.2? Would the two cards work in tandem to output to the single 4k display? Can the second GPU still be used for OpenCL, even if it is not connected to a display?
    Thanks

    There is no option to have only one Dxxx, and yes some apps do and no the number of displays does not affect video output.

  • Server 10.3.9 - Three NIC cards - Route between Three subnets

    I have a panther server with three nic cards, each one connected to a different network.
    xx.xx.1.x = private intranet used for storing video files- Has a DHCP server
    xx.xx.2.x = company intranet used for internet access-
    xx.xx.3.x = editors intranet
    I have a NAT set up to forward network activity from the .3 to the .2
    But the editors (.3) also need to access .1.
    Is there a way to connect the .3 to the .1 network through the server?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Here's a picture to show what I'm trying to say.
    http://www.kbdiondemand.org/client_files/routing.png

    Here is my newest routing table. I cleared everything out and started over.
    I have NAT enabled and it is working, but I removed the private address.
    http://www.kbdiondemand.org/client_files/routing3.png
    I'm starting to wonder if I need to create a divert rule in the firewall. NAT has a firewall divert rule to send traffic to the NAT service.
    So far, I haven't gotten the syntaxt correct for creating the divert rule. The error message is the port is incorrect?
    I haven't found the information on any of the panther server books out there. They shy away from using the server as a firewall or a router.
    excerpt from Essential Mac OS X Panther Server Administration
    Of all the things that a packet filter can do, Apple seems to have some pretty specific things in mind for the Firewall service in Mac OS X Server. Panther Server's Firewall service is targeted at protecting the server on which it is running. Configuring a firewall for this purpose is very different from configuring a firewall designed to sit at the border between a network and the Internet. Mac OS X Server is simply not well-suited for the tasks normally performed by a dedicated firewall.
    For example, Mac OS X Server needs to be rebooted for things like software updates, and does a fairly poor job of routing packets during the reboot. Surely you could configure Mac OS X Server as a router and then never touch it so that it wouldn't have to be rebooted, but that means no software updates. Just because Mac OS X Server can act as a router; that does not mean it's the most cost-effective or functional solution. Trying to shoehorn Apple's Firewall service into performing duties that it wasn't intended to provide is generally not a good idea.
    Apple also includes a Network Address Translation (NAT) service that works in conjunction with the firewall. This service could be used to provide Internet access to a workgroup by allowing the workstations to share the server's IP address. While the NAT service does work, better results may be found with the average $40 NAT router. The bottom line is that it's a very good idea to use dedicated network hardware, and not a personal computer, to perform critical network functions like routing. This reduces network downtime due to computer maintenance such as software updates.
    I will focus on using Apple's Firewall service for protection of services running on our server, and not to do routing or NAT for other computers.

  • Dual band card - U400

    I have upgraded to a dual band router. I was wondering if it is possible to replace the card in the U400 with a dual band card. I know it will fit based on the size/type of card but I didn't know if it had the correct antenna. I don't want to purchase and install the card to find out it isn't able to use both bands. Any advice would appreciated. Thanks!

    hi perrinjcat,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
    Lenovo System has a limited support for Wifi adapters it has a Whitelist of parts compatible and those parts are marked with an FRU number,
    Here are the parts stated to be compatible on your system
    Highlighted are the FRU Number,
    NOTE: The WIFI card should be marked with the listed FRU.
    Same part model with no FRU will not work.

  • LYNC EDGE Server NIC Card Setup

    Hello Guys,
    I need Your help about setting up the NIC on my EDGE server. I already gone through the article about Set Up Network Interfaces for Edge Servers. as I understand there
    are 2 NIC required on each EDGE server (1 Internal facing 7 another 1 is External facing).  I just wanted to confirm is there any option to do this with only 1 NIC card or can we configure EDGE with 1 NIC only.?
    Thanks in Advance.

    Regards Rishi Aggarwal

    Possible?  Yes, I do this on occasion against recommendations and best practices for companies who simply can't or won't set up a second DMZ (please don't split the NICs between your internal network and DMZ, it's just bad security).  Everything
    mostly seems to work just fine.  But, recommended and supported? No.
    Here's an article from David Paulino who's also been through it:

  • Identifying NIC card speed

    Hi All ,
    Is there any command to find the NIC card speed (whether it is half duplex of full duplex). Please help me on this.
    Thank you,

    You can see what speed the card has come up in /var/adm/messages
    eg

    Also check out this cool cool script. The speed and duplex setting are stored in the Kernel and can be pulled out using this script, which formats them in a nice way for you.
