Setting up DVD drives on single IDE channels

The k9n only has a single IDE channel, but my dvd drive will only seem to work when I have it set as the Primary Master. Does this particularly matter ?

Uthred,
Run your DVD Drive as Master on the IDE Cable. If you have an IDE Hard Drive you also want to run on there, try it as slave. (I am guessing it would be a backup HD since you have all the SATA HDs listed in your Sig.)
If the DVD Drive does not like the Slave HD, I would recommend buying a cheap USB 2.0 External Drive Enclosure and putting your backup IDE HD in there and plug it in to a USB Port.
It is a solution.
Take Care,
Richard

    Hello,
Almost all new motherboards today only have a primary ide channel and the rest are SATA.
I need inputs regarding the dvd drive which is shown in device manager as located on the primary ide channel while the hard drive is located on the secondary channel. Because I would like to update the dvd drive to the latest firmware (version 1.06; to be able to recognize more blank media) but the LG site recommends that the drive (dvd) be located on the secondary ide channel.
I already tried to uninstall every channel from the device manager but all would still be the same after reboot, dvd drive on primary, hard drive on secondary.
Current ide mode in BIOS is set to AHCI+IDE mode, DMA modes are fine (UDMA4 for dvd, UDMA5 for hard drive), boot sequence (1st=HD, 2nd=DVD, 3rd=Floppy drive)
Tried switching to IDE mode only in BIOS but would not detect the optical drive. Never tried RAID+IDE mode since I only have a single hard drive.
I'm not sure but if I try to update the firmware, it might instead try to update the hard drive's firmware instead of the optical drive and make the hard drive unusable.
I would like to know if anybody with this same situation was able to successfully update the optical drive's firmware or is there some way to place the optical drive on the secondary ide channel and the hard drive on primary for me to follow and replicate the process.
    Thank you for any replies.

Thanks sir NovJoe for the reply.
Just received the solution from another forum where I posted the same problem.
They said that the flash program for the firmware will detect the drive on its own and would not flash other devices except the optical drive itself. So its pretty safe, and I can confirm this since I just flashed my ODD a little over a while ago and everything went fine. No errors.
Though I'm speaking for the brand of ODD I own and may be different for other brands so take precautions as well. It may be different for the others.

  • I had to erase and reinstall mavericks to hd, now i cannot boot up , i get a folder with flashing Q mark and i cannot boot from dvd drive...Ideas please

    hi
its a long and sorry story, i have a imac running mavericks
a few days ago i noticed that the dvd drive was ejecting every disc i put in, so i decide to check hd with onyx and reset permissions etc
onyx said the smart status couldnt be checked and i should check hd using disk utility.
i did this and it came up that hd had errors , so i ran the repair facility....it came up with disk can not be repaired, reformat and reinstall mavericks
    this i did.
i  reinstalled mavericks into mac hd, which took about 3 hrs, i then rebooted and a folder with flashing Qmark appeared, i cant get past this at all.
i have tried to use internet recovery but it comes up with 6002f error, and the dvd drive still does not accept boot disk, so i am at a lose as to how to proceed
    anybody got any ideas?
    thanks
    L

If your hard drive has SMART errors then it is failing and should be replaced. Disk Utility cannot fix SMART reported errors.

  • Satellite Pro A120 - Second hard drive on secondary IDE channel

    Hello
    I have a Satellite Pro A120 xp sp3.
I've been trying to get it to recognise a 2nd hard drive on the secondary ide channel but it won't. Cd drive has been removed and replaced with one of these, the with the pata to sata interface.
    [http://newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_27&produc ts_id=245]
The second hard drive is a seagate sata 500 GB drive. Drive is spinning and recieving power but not showing up in storage management or device manager.
In the Bio's (uptodate) it shows me this but won't let me edit it.
    Drives I/O
Built in HDD = serial ATA port 0
    CD rom = Secondary ide (170H - IRQ 15)
To me the hardware is capable of supporting two HDD's as long as you remove cd drive but it seems like the bio's is locking me out of deselecting CD rom on the second IDE channel.
Please could some one point me in the right direction to resolve this.
    Thanks
    Zander

    Thanks for the help.
Ok I followed what you said and this is what happens.
Uninstalled CD drive in device manager.
boot to bios with out 2nd hard drive in the slot. Bios shows no secondary IDE channel or hard drive
As soon as I push in the 2nd hard drive caddy and boot it says CD error, doesn't show in windows or device manager. Bios shows CD drive again. Also the CD drive is reinstalled in the device manager.
Tried it with original HDD with operating system on it in the 2nd hard drive bay and it won't boot, looks for bootable device but can't read it.
Why does it only see the cd drive! Annoying.
    Any more ideas?

  • DVD drive with faster IDE

    hi all,
thanks Jeff and Grantt my Hard Drive corruption was resolved, now I´ve got another question...I read, that the CDdrive on my G3 beige use an ata16 connection, can I install it on the ata33 of the motherboard?
do I need to use a special cable?
    thanks again.
PD. where I can read bout the conections of this motherboard? and understand the bootlenecks it have? thanks

The two IDE/ATA connections on the Beige g3 motherboard each operate at 16.7 MB/sec. In the rev 2 and 3, each can support Master and Slave devices. It is not a good idea to mix faster (Hard drive) devices with slower (CD/DVD) devices on the same cable, because the faster devices will be slowed down to the speed of the slower devices.
Although we like to think of CD and DVD readers and writers as Fast (especially after what we paid for them) they are not fast compared to Hard Drives, and putting them on a faster bus does not do much for their speed.
The Blue & White G3 has one PCI slot that operates faster than the others. It is intended for the graphics card. Some users have suggested putting your Hard Drive Controller card in this slot. This does not make sense for consumer Hard Drives, because consumer Hard Drives cannot transfer data fast enough to use the extra bandwidth. It only makes sense when using absolute top-of-the line drives, such as 15,000 RPM or faster Hard Drives.

  • How do I set default dvd drive for burning

I am looking for a way to set a default dvd writer.
The system I am working on has multiple writers attached (one is a duplicator).
Unfortunately, the software or OS seems to latch on to the most recently added drive.
In one instance it defaulted to a removable backup drive we attached.
I have been getting around this by using the "build and burn" option then using the drop down box to select the proper DVD writer.
Is there a way to set a default and eliminate this step and the confusion that results when people instinctively click "burn" and the machine tries to write to improper locations?
Thanks for your help, this has been a thorn in my side for quite some time.

Well not what I wanted to hear but thanks for confirming what I had found to be true. Would still like to hear if anyone has any creative workarounds.

  • 975X Platinum, IDE2, Jmicron Controller + DVD drives?

    Hello.
I have the MSI 975X Platinum PUE motherboard, and I'm currently using 5 disk drives (4 IDE, and 1 SATA)
The SATA drive is my system disk, and it is setup as IDE as Primary Master.
I have 2 IDE hard drives on IDE1, and the 2 DVD drives are on IDE 2. Read/Write times are fine with the hard drives, but I'm not quite sure if the DVD drives are set up the best way.
I have read the whole thing about PIO and UDMA mode with the JMicron controller, but I still have a few questions.
First, a very NOOBish question. How do I find out whether the DVD drives are in PIO or UDMA mode - I simply can't remember how to do it. I have both checked in Device Manager, and in Sytem Administration (is it called that in English? My XP is in Danish  )
In Device Manager, both DVD drives are listed as a SCSI devices. But the read times are strange with the 2 DVD drives.
The LG drive reads at 9 MB/s (6.6x) 26ms (Secondary Master)
The NEC ND3500A drive (burner) reads at 5235 KB/s (3.9x) 109 ms (Secondary Slave)
Tests are done with SiSoft Sandra. Shouldn't the NEC drive perform better? It is supposed to be the better one of the 2 drives  ???
Can anyone tell if the performances are as they should be? I'm a little confused
    Thanks in advance

    Good Luck!
Right click My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE/ATAPI controllers>Double Click on the controller and then > Advanced Settings
My experience is that you cannot enable DMA with the jMicron driver, which is why you have low read speeds. Write speeds are just as bad. 1 hour to write 4GB Data on secondary channel, as opposed to under4 minutes for 4.4GB Data on primary.
The DVD needs to be on the primary channel.

  • DVD drive not detected (K9N2GM-FD)

For some reason my motherboard( K9N2GM-FD) is not detecting my DVD drive.
Here is the setup I'm using:
     AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 Brisbane 2.7GHz
    Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
a lite on DVD drive(model DH-20A4P33C) I bought at walmart
Antec NeoPower 550 550W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply
The DVD drive is an IDE drive and it's getting power(I can open and close it).
I tried changing some things in the bios, trying a different drive, and trying a different IDE cable still can't get it to work.
    every thing passes post test.
And the bios is version 1.2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You did use proper standoff's to mount the board in the case?
    yes
BTW, the controller is turned on I presume.
    yes
If all is mounted correctly and there isn't any short, then I would RMA the board.
    Ok I'll RMA it
    Thanks for the help

  • Dvd drive not detected

I have a HP Pavilion dv6700 entertainment PC. ive had it for a good while and the dvd drive doesn't work in it. i tried the drive in another computer and it worked. I also tried a bootable disk and it didn't work. I checked the BIOS and set the dvd drive as first startup and tried again but it was no good. Is there any hardware problem or switch i should know about to get it working on my laptop again?

  • Portege M400: Vista does not see the CD/DVD drive

    Hi
I have upgraded my M400 to Vista and now it seems I have a problem with the driver for my DVD drive.
I don't see a vista driver for the DVD drive.
    Any ideas?
    Steve

    >OK ... so any idea why Vista would say that the driver is invalid?
Possibly because of the registry problem
    Try this;
Enter the device manager and remove the drive from the system.
Then reboot the notebook. The Vista OS should initial and install the new device (CD/DVD drive) again.
Then go to the registry and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    Then reboot the notebook again.
    Hopefully it helps!

  • Upgrade snow leopard with faulty dvd drive

I am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger using the Snow Leopard install DVD. Unfortunately my DVD drive in my Macbook stopped working a few years ago. I have an external DVD Drive connected via Firewire and also an iMac using Lion.
When trying to use the DVD drive to install the software using the disk restore to factory settings function, it restarts but fails to progress to the select language screen, instead it jut starts up normally.
The iMac with Lion doesn't have the Remote Install OSX application so i cannot use the iMac DVD drive to install from. The new iMac also has a different firewire connecter so my lead won't connect to both machines to try and install using the iMac's DVD drive.
Any ideas how i can get my macbook to perform an upgrade or even to erase an reinstall using the Snow Leopard DVD?
    Thanks

Thanks Ross, that is an excellent idea and have thought about it in the past, but because I only have my MacBook I don't want to have to rely on other people to update or even reinstall if something goes seriously wrong. I want a DVD drive that will work with my mac just ad the internal would. Maybe I should just bight the bullet and just get it fixed, but am sure a portable DVD drive would be atleast the price. Appreciate your advice though thank you.

  • IDE Channel set up advise ?

I have always understood that the optimum IDE set up is to keep hard drives together and CDROM's and DVD together. I understood that if I combined the CDROM on the same IDE as a HD, that the IDE speed would be reduced to the lowest common demoninator (DMA33), hence I've kept them separate.
    My current setup,
Primary Master = OS / Boot hard drive (DMA100)
Primary Slave = Download / backup hard drive (DMA133)
    Secondary Master = CDROM-RW (DMA33)
Secondary Slave = spare (future DVD-RW)
A recent magazine article (CPU) recommended the opposite, that I place the second HD on the secondary channel and the CDROM on either channel, but preferably the primary.
Since I use the second drive for downloads and backups this makes some sense as backing up the primary HD I would be reading and writing on the same channel (as now) and the internet connection restricts my download speeds more than DMA33 would.
All thoughts, ideas and recommendations welcome. I'm also thinking of adding a DVD-RW at some point so advice for the future config would be appreciated.

Because there is many opinions out there and every system is more or less different I think the only way to find out is to benchmark every reasonable configuration.
If you try configuration you have now (2 harddrives on one channel) you may want to put the faster harddrive (DMA133) as a primary master. I read somewhere that faster drive should be a master.
Also, if you copy files from within the same IDE channel you will get slower transfers. Copying CDs/DVDs at high speeds within the same IDE channel without making temporary file is not recommended.
The answer is not simple :(
I had this issue some time ago and thought about it a lot. Finally, I bought an extra IDE controller and now I have 4 masters  :D (2 HDDs, DVD drive, DVD burner). This costs an extra 50 bucks, but everything is smooth now and I am getting maximal transfer from each of my guys :D .

  • IDE/DVD drive problem

I just set up my new Neo4-F board and I'm having problems with the DVD/CDRW drive I have installed.  When I first installed it on IDE2 as the master, Windows installed just fine and so did a bunch of driver updates.  After I powered down and turned it back on later, I found that inserting a CD into the drive would cause a BSOD.  I tried numerous things, including reinstalling Windows to get it to work.  Reinstalling Windows did get it to work again, but then after a power down it started to BSOD on me again.  So I moved the drive to the IDE1 slave position and everything seems to work except it doesn't recognize DVDs.  I'm fairly sure the drive is not damaged since it worked on the last machine it was installed in.
I also tried using a different CDRW drive to see what would happen.  First I put that in IDE2/Master position, and it worked, but Windows took a long time to load.  So I'm convinced since drives do work on that spot and that the original DVD/CDRW drive was able to work until a power cycle, that there's something wrong with the IDE2 spot and/or my motherboard in general.  I'm concerned that if I buy a new drive that it also won't work.  Everything is recognized correctly in Windows and in the BIOS, and there are no conflicts reported in Windows.  Any ideas as to why my DVD drive doesn't seem to want to work?
    Thanks.

I wanted to check the firmware version but I'm not sure how to go about that.  I'm pretty sure it's the most recent as the latest firmware update on Samsung's website is from 2003.  Although it could be longer than I want to admit/can remember since I got this drive.  The reason I think the IDE2 port might be problematic is that the CDRW drive I put in there worked without crashing, but had the not so nice habit of adding an extra 30+ seconds to the Windows load time.  And I know the drive works, and it's being detected just fine in the BIOS and in Windows.  It also reads CDs fine (but seems to be picky about what CDR/Ws it reads).
I should just pick up a DVDRW drive from a local store and see if that works in there.  If not I can always return it.  Unless anyone else has any ideas?  I should also ask while I'm at it, is it normal to have more than one Primary IDE, Secondary IDE channel and Standard Duel Channel PCI IDE controller listed in device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers?  I have three of each.  Shouldn't there only be one of each?
My only other option I think would be to get a SATA drive and bypass the IDE altogether.  But that's a more expensive option I'd like to avoid if at all possible.
    Thanks again.

  • Sony IDE DVD Drive not being recognized

    Motherboard : P7n-SLI-FI
                        MS-7380
I recently upgraded my computer a bit with this new motherboard, ram, video cards, power supply. I used my older dvd drive that was working in my last computer. It is currently connected via IDE ribbon, but it does not show up in my computer or when I put in a CD does not auto run.
The unit does have power to it ( The eject button works, light on front blinks a little )
In BIOS I tried changing the IDE primary from AUTO to DVD/CD Drive and it still did not work.
Any suggestions ? Buy a new dvd drive that is SATA ?
    Thanks

Also check the jumpers on the IDE optical drive so as they are set in Master mode as its the only IDE device in the system, assuming that you have a SATA hard drive, or if your hard drive is also an IDE one then you have to set the jumper to run as a Slave mode.
