Setting up gmail in mail preference - imac

Hi. I want to setup gmail in mail but cant get it right. My son also tri and now the settings in mail preference is a mixed. Is there someone who can take me through this. I will appreciate it. Please

Go to Mail Preferences- Accounts and confirm you are providing Gmail what they require to send and receive mail. And DON'T specify Secure Socket Layer. Some mail accts don't like SSL

I had gmail set up as an additional account in Apple mail but somehow it will not work now. I get the following message.
"Connection Failed
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account "Gmail" or try again.
The server error encountered was: The server "mail.example.com>" cannot be contacted on port 110."

Can't set up Gmail in Mail 3.5

Hi,
I cannot set up either POP nor IMAP. I get the error message: Trying to log on to IMAP (or POP) failed. But my user and password are correct.
Interestingly, I didn't receive a testmail from googlemail to my old mail address either. What is wrong?
Any ideas?

"The IMAP server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages"
AND
"The SMTP server "smtp.gmail.com" is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to send messages"
it might be very basic but I can't manage. Can anyone help??

I have double checked user name /password and have enabled the IMAP in Gmail settings.

Error in setting icloud mail on iMac - 'incoming mail server'

I created a new mail account in icloud and cannot edit this account in Mail Preferences on my iMac. Everytime I try to save my changes i get the following error:
"The incoming mail server filed cannot be empty."
Of course the field is automatically filled in and greyed out so it is not changable.
I have tried various fixes, deleting, setting up again, setting up the iCloud and Mail/etc. in System Preferences...
Help!

I know that it can be frustrating when an email account, such as your Gmail accounts, are not working as you would expect. In this situation I would recommend reading over and working through the attached article. The Connection Doctor may provide some further information as to what is causing the errors.

Using Firefox on a iMac OS-X; the settings used through Google labs in gmail, composing mail font settings don't work.

I'm using 'DEFAULT TEXT STYLING" in Google LABS. Any setting you make here are not available in composing email.

Let us know the setting from preferences/accounts so we can see if anything is incorrect. Frequently it is needing to have the server port changed. Mine is at 587, and all is working fine. Feel free to hide the info you prefer not to share, an example "username"@gmail.com.
