In mail, if you click window (on the menu bar) and connection doctor, what does it tell you?

Since upgrading to FF5, "mailto" links no longer work - my "tools/options/applications/mailto" is set to gmail.
Previously, when I clicked onto an email link, my gmail would open up.
Now, nothing happens.

Please do the following.

#Open Microsoft Internet Explorer and then click '''Tools '''and go to '''Internet Options'''.

#Click the ''Programs ''tab and where you see "Email", choose your email client.

#Remove the checkmark from where it says "''Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default browser''" in the same menu.

#Click Apply/OK and close Internet Explorer.

#Next, start Firefox and click the orange Firefox button, go to '''Options '''| '''Options '''| '''Advanced'''.

#In the '''General '''tab, '''System Defaults''' at the bottom, checkmark the option: "'''Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup'''" and then click the "''Check Now''" button.

#Click OK, close Firefox and then restart it again.
You should now have a mailto: option in the Applications panel.

I have different icloud and iTunes id's and I want to do homesharing for all my devices. I'm trying to set up a new iMac but homesharing is not working. Should it be the itunes or iCloud id?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Preferably your iTunes account, but it shouldn't really matter for getting homesharing turned on, as long as it's a valid ID.

The way that Dropbox works is that it keeps a copy of all your files in your local Dropbox folder on your hard drive (which is, by default, directly under your home folder). Adding files to that folder will sync them to the Dropbox server.
You do of course have to download the Dropbox application to enable this (download link at the top right of http://dropbox.com ).

I am not sure what you mean by "Flash Player for steam"; the only Flash Player installers I know is the ActiveX (for Internet Explorer) and the plugin (for other browsers); you can find both at http://helpx.adobe.com/content/help/en/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player- windows.html#main-pars_header

• Problem setting up Gmail--Help!

I seem to be having issues setting up Gmail. I set up my Yahoo mail account with no issues but Gmail keeps failing. I'm correctly entering my account name and password but verification--both in SSL and non-SSL fails each time. My gmail account is set to accept POP3. Anyone else run into this and what worked?
I need to get Gmail going so I can handle my work Exchange mail via the redirect option. (Forced to use an icky Dell on non-IMAP-friendly exchange server at work)
Thanks!!

Hi PT,
I've been using the GMail shortcut--although I have tried once through the Other shortcut.
I've tried to set up both my existing Gmail account (had forever) and a brand new 'clean' account. Both have POP enabled.
Each time, the iPhone tries to verify account info. After an interval, I get a "Cannot Connect Using SSL -- Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?". I've clicked cancel and tried again and clicked yes (try without SSL) and neither work. I get an "Account Verification Failed" message.
I've tried this while on work wireless, home wireless and EDGE.
Additional information:
When I first set up my iPhone, I set up my Y mail account without a hitch.
Thanks for pitching in!

• I'm setting up my new imac and

Hi
I'm setting up my new imac and have migrated files from my old windows pc okay. the problem is that the migration utility created two different users for my music and my pictures. i want to combine all files under one user. any suggestions? (sorry, first time mac user). Cheers

You have to decide to use one account. To move your data, you can use an USB drive or Shared folder

I can't send emails via mail. I can receive but not send. I have set up gmail on mail. Any ideas? No problems with the set up previously to this.

Go to Mail Preferences- Accounts and confirm you are providing Gmail what they require to send and receive mail. And DON'T specify Secure Socket Layer. Some mail accts don't like SSL
Good Luck to you.

• How do I set up gmail not to download messages on iPhone

Hi Everyone,
Hopefully this is just a quick question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Here is the setup:
1. I have a number of email accounts that I manage on an Google Apps account (e.g. [email protected]; [email protected], etc)
2. I have set up gmail accounts so the key messages I want to read end up from the google apps account in my main @gmail.com.
3. I would like to use my iPhone to send from both my mail @gmail.com as well as my google apps account (e.g. from [email protected] "Uncle Mike for my birthday I'd like a pony" attached a picture of a pony)
I have therefore setup my main @gmail account in iOS mail and my other Google Apps accounts that I want to use (e.g. [email protected]) syncing only mail.
The challenge is that I get repeated emails (because [email protected] forwards to @gmail.com) on my iOS device. I've set up filters in Gmail to mark as read and archive the messages before they are forwarded for the Google Apps accounts, but they still keep on being downloaded.
Any suggestions on how to force iOS Mail app not download them? Or is there a special Gmail side filter I can use?
BR,
AK

Move them to a folder that is stored locally, rather than on the email server.
Reading between the lines, I guess your account uses IMAP, where the design philosophy is to store all messages on the server. Since your client shows what's on the server, when you delete a message, it vanishes both on the server and in the client.
The Local Folders "special" account in Thunderbird is provided for this very purpose, amongst others.

• Need help with setting up a new iMac

I tried to use Migration Assistant to set up my new iMac. I transferred data from PPB G5 10.5.8 but MA hung at "less than one min. remaining" so I closed the window. Is there any way to erase what has been transferred and start over again with transferring from G5 to iMac? Can I partition the iMac disk to put Boot Camp on one disk so I can use my WIndows applications?

Personally I would just try to Migrate the data again, if it hangs just leave it to it, its more than likely trying to work out where to put the files or even might be re-writting bits of data to move your files from the older OS to the newer OS, given that the file structures are bound to be slightly different. Give it a chance and see how it goes.
As for boot camp as fas as I know it comes with it installed so I don't see any reason you couln't install windows on the iMac, why you would want to it another matter.

• Catastrophic failure with setting up a new iMac

I'm kind of at my wits end here. I bought my wife a new iMac to replace her 6 year old iMac. When trying to set up, using the prompt to copy from another Mac when her old one and the new one were connected with an Ethernet cable, they just couldn't find each other. Thinking that maybe the cable wasn't good, I took an Ethernet cable from our Time Capsule. However, I unplugged the cable that got us Internet from AT&T UVerse. Of course we lost our Wifi in the process. So I put the cable back. I have repeatedly recycled both the Time Capsule and the UVerse router. AirPort Utility now insists that the Ethernet connection is not there between the UVerse router and the Time Capsule. I connected my iMac by Ethernet and all is OK on my iMac. But I simply cannot restore the connection between the UVerse router and the Time Capsule. And I cannot get the new iMac and the one being replaced to recognize each other, even though they are connected by Ethernet. Given that I don't have a way to connect them by FireWire (hers has a FireWire 800, which could be used, I guess), I cannot set up her computer. And, since I can't connect her to the Ethernet, setup is not going to be completed. So it's a bunch of problems that have rendered our household without Wifi and the inability to set up the new iMac. Anybody have any tractable solutions? Thank you.

First off get the old iMac up and running. I am amazed that so many users have this much diffaculty.
I AM sure you will probably need this.

Next all you need to transfer the contents is a USB on both ends and there are several ways to do this but I find the Migration Assistant works the best. be sure you do not have any applications open on either machine when you do this.

This will take a little time so don't get flustered.

• Getting 'Unrecognized Apple ID or password' when setting up iCloud on iMac.

'You Can't Sign In At This Time' - Try signing in again.
I have tried and tried and can't get it to work. Please help if anyone can.

However I can set it up fine on my macbook pro

• Set up of new iMac - need to sync existing iPhone & iPad but cannot

I have set up a new iMac and cannot get any of my itunes backups to sync my iphone and ipad to the new mac. My iphone & ipad were all synced to my old windows laptop via itunes and everything synchronized - mail, calendar, music etc. Now I am setting up a new iMac and I signed up the itunes via iCloud. This has only set up anything purchased through itunes and about 90% of my music was not purchased through itunes so most of it is missing. So I have spoken to apple support on the phone and they guided me to transfer my old windows media to the new iMac using migration assistant. Unfortunately this wouldn't connect, so I am back to square one.
So now I have manually moved all of my photos and music manually using an external hard drive - so that has taken over the largest amount of files to the new iMac but my issue still remains that nothing will sync to the new iMac. I am totally lost now and have no idea how to approach it.
I tried to back up the iPad and iPhone to iCloud but even that won't happen - so basically everything is still syncing to my old windows laptop and nothing is syncing to my new iMac.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to approach and where to start. I am based in Dubai and there is no apple store here so I can't even take it all in and just get it all sorted and I am not getting much help on the phone as the tech support is 9-5pm work days only and I am at work and not in front of the iMac to try any troubleshooting.
Any suggestions are WELCOME!
thanks,

sign out of the itunes on the PC and then sign into the itunes on the ipad iphone and imac w/ the same apple id make sure that all 3 devices are authorized to the same apple id and then you should be able to start syncing the phone and pad to the imac.

• Setting up a new iMac with backup from Macbook Pro -- is it possible?

I am retiring my old Macbook Pro, and would like to change over to an iMac or Mac Pro since I am tired of hauling my work back and forth every day. I have my Macbook backed up using Time Machine -- can I use that backup to set up a new iMac?

I would strongly recommend reading the late great Pondini's article on Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant:
