Setting up Gmail to work through Apple Mail

I already have a number of mail accounts on my iMac, Macbook and iPhone. For various reasons I need to use POP3-type accounts with my ISP, MobileMe accounts and Hotmail. Everything works just as I want it, with all accounts accessible through Mail (4.4) on all devices.
Now, to access some business emails, I need to add a GMail account. I've tried adding the account but get no further than the outgoing server part, because the setup cannot find it. I've searched online for how to complete the setup and, so far, I haven't found the definitive way, but have found much discussion about many problems others have been having.
Does anyone have the Definitive Method of how to setup GMail to operate through Mail?
Help please!

What's the last step you do before receiving an error message?
Could you do a simple email alias instead?

  • Problem with gmail not working with apple mail..

    Hi,
i'm trying to set up a gmail account to the apple mail program on mac (still works in iphone and ipad). after many diffrent approaches,
i think i have all the right setnings. But i still cant connect to the google IMAP, both with or without SSL.
i guess perhaps that the problem could be within the google settings.
does anyone have another solution i could try?

it dosn't work.. have tried that at least 5 times..
    this is what i get:

  • Gmail is not working with Apple Mail

I am trying to get my Gmail account working through IMAP in Apple Mail on the Mountain Lion operating system.  I have a brand new MacBook Pro, and it is frustrating to not have this working.
When I attempt to set up my account, I get the below message:
The Google IMAP server “imap.gmail.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.
I know the server is working because I am able to get into Gmail everywhere else.  It sounds like other people may also have this problem.  Does anyone have a solution for this?

  • Gmail suddenly not working with Apple Mail

My gmail suddenly is not working with Apple Mail.
It said my username or password is wrong, but it was okay this morning.
Nevertheless, I deleted my gmail account, and re-setup it using Internet Accounts from System Preference.
However, I got the beow message:
There was a problem setting up the Mail account. An unknown error occurred.
I am sure my username and password are correct because I just login it using Safari.
Does anyone know what the cause is?
    Please help~~~

Gmail not syncing in mac mail is a problem that is also in snow leopard since the new year.
OSX 10.6.8  is the highest OS that will run on an Intel Core 2 Duo.  Do not try to install Mavericks on this machine! I will install, but turns it into a dinosaur and many programs will no longer run.
I had an issue with Mac Mail not syncing with imap.gmail.com. and Safari not being able to find apple.com.
This was resolved by working with an upper level tech support member for several hours deleating particular system library files, uninstalling most addons, reseting system network settings and a whole lot more! (too much to name here)
    Thank you Apple Tech Support.

I think it's trying to open it in a gMail eMail & is losing your gMail password that it needs log into gMail, but not 100% positive.
Have you tried Right clicking or Control+click on the eMail link & choose Copy? Works on some, not others.

Did you try deleting the mail account, then adding it back?   I've read a lot of times that is what needs to happen in order for it to work properly.

  • Windows Live Hotmail Plus - Work in Apple Mail?

Can someone tell me if 'Windows Live Hotmail Plus' works with Apple Mail?
Can I send and receive (hotmail) e-mails in Mail without going onto the internet to the hotmail site?
I will still use the online hotmail, when I'm away from my computer.
One on my friends suggested using Gmail, but there's too much hassle changing everything over. And I mean everything... all my internet shopping accounts, all the forums account, all my contacts I have stored... plus I want to keep using Adium (all my friends have hotmail and MSN on Windows, but iChat doesn't work). So I don't want Gmail for sending them all e-mails while still using hotmail to chat... I'd rather they'd all be under the one account (hotmail).
I have set up a "test" account with Gmail. Its ok, but I think because I've been using hotmail for years it just seems really different and I have to say it... I don't like it. (this is on the website site access) - it seems very cluttered, I don't like that replies are kept in threads in one e-mail, you can't customize it... I know I'll p*ss some people of but I love hotmail.
On the plus side, it does what I want hotmail to do... it allows me to view, create and send e-mails in Apple Mail with no problems, while also having the ability to access it online when I'm away from home.
I have/still using Izymail - which can let me view and send hotmails e-mails in Mail, but all e-mails (plain text, or with a photo, or .doc file attached) are all blocked when they reach anyone else's hotmail account - even though the sender is on the Safer Sender list - so it's Izymail part which is being blocked and there's no way to fix it.
    Thanks for any information.

Please tell me if you've had any luck.
I was receiving hotmail through Mail until two days ago!?!? I've been using httpmail for years and suddenly now it's not working. Actually, it's been acting up since hotmail live went online - it's very geared towards windows users!!
I can't send, receive. It says I need to subscribe to a live account (the error message in mail) - but I have a live account!! I have a plus account!!
I emailed support at hotmail but haven't received a reply.
This is so depressing. Why can't apple and windows applications just get along?

  • Emails always are suck in outbox when sent through Apple mail

Emails always are suck in outbox when sent through Apple mail. How should I deal with it ? Many thanks!

As mentioned, Outlook is not email standards compliant. It probably never will be based on Microsoft's history. However, I think there are various issues involved in the problems people have. I often send emails from home to my Outlook account at work. I have never experienced any of the problems that I've seen posted anywhere regarding Mail and Outlook.
My conclusion is that there are issues with certain Exchange Server configurations and/or issues with your own ISP mail server causing the issues.
I do have my system set up to Always send windows friendly attachments (from what I've read, this really is 'send Outlook friendly attachments'), and always put attachments at the end. Prior to the 'always put attachments at the end,' I wasn't having any issues, either. However, I read that that setting helped with other email clients, so I use it.
The obvious question is, "well, how is your exchange server configured." I would love to provide the answer to that question; however, I work for a DoD organization, so actually tracking down the person that knows the answer to that question will take somewhere between five years and never. With my 20+ years experience with the DoD, I'm leaning towards the never end of the spectrum. The other half of the equation is, "I'm using cox as my ISP."

  • Hotmail stopped working in Apple Mail - PLEASE HELP

My Comcast and Gmail accounts work great in Mail. But I keep getting the following error when setting up my free Hotmail account:
"The POP server "pop3.live.com" is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable."
It allows me to click through but then when trying to sign onto my account I get this error:
"The server returned the error: The server “pop3.live.com” refused to allow a connection on port 995."
I am using the following settings:
    http://lifehacker.com/5169684/hotmail-finally-enables-pop3-worldwide
I've checked with my ISP and they say they're not blocking any ports, my firewall is turned off, I get this same type of error when setting up Hotmail on Thunderbird on my Mac. I can sign on just fine on other computers mail clients in my house and I have no problem signing in via the web.
I've been having this problem for about 3 months now. My thought is that there's something internally telling the necessary ports to block all traffic but I'm stumped on how to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I only have a Hotmail account for testing to help others, but in general it has worked fine. However, yesterday and today, it keeps prompting for the password, so I deselected to include when automatically checking, and have only been using Get Mail manually, which works.
Snow Leopard appears to check often and regularly on the status of the connection to servers -- I am wondering if Hotmail is finding this objectionable?

  • HT2500 links no longer work in apple mail.

links no longer work in apple mail, even though they do work on other mail services?

This is typically an issue of setting the web preference in the WINDOWS preferred programs. In Win7 this is accessed from Control Panel>Default Programs>Set Program Access...>Custom. Maybe these options will give you an idea of the problem.

  • Hidden files sent through Apple Mail

Whenever I send attachments through Apple Mail, I get these 1KB files showing up in the attachment. For example, if I attached and sent a 1MB file called "photo1.jpg" through Apple Mail, my friends receive two files; 1 MB file called photo1.jpg and another one 1KB file by the same name. If I sent two attached files, I get two more 1KB files by the same name. Depending on how large the main file is the other file may vary from 1KB - 8KB.
I do not know how to avoid sending something I do not see.
Are these .ds_store files? When I sent this to myself on Gmail through Apple Mail I get the same. So, it is not as if ONLY windows guys see them. I can also see them in my Safari.
    Please help.

This is likely the results of the AppleDouble MIME encoding mechanisms used within your Apple Mail client; the second hunk is the resource fork from the image file.
You can ignore it, or you can switch to a sending client that doesn't generate the AppleDouble MIME message (and the resource fork), or you can switch to a receiving client that does.
Reading fodder (though potentially more detail than you probably want) is available:
    http://home.earthlink.net/~bobbau/email/more-tips/
    http://db.tidbits.com/article/05787
There are other discussions of the AppleDouble format around.
The Windows Friendly switch disables this mechanism; the resource fork is not sent within the MIME-encoded message.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

  • Can't send email through Apple mail

I suddenly am not able to send email through Apple mail on my MacBookPro.  ipad and iphone still working.  I can also send email through att online.  My email is @att.net, and the message says "The server cannot be contacted on port 465".  (That is the proper port)

    Hi,
    Here are some suggestions,
    1. Try downloading another free email client to see if it works from there, just to eliminate other possibilities.
    2. Try removing the account in mail settings, and adding it again with the correct settings.
Let me know what you find!

  • SMTP settings not working on Apple Mail but work on other email clients like Sparrow

Apple mail constantly gives me "Could not connect to SMTP server" while other email clients have not problem connecting to the same server using the same credentials. And yes I've checked my login name / pw. many times. Same exact settings on all clients. Everything works, while Apple Mail doesnt. I've been using Apple Mail app for a while with my other accounts. For some reason here, it can't connect. Any ideas?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
