Setting up ichat

Help can someone help me to set up ichat.I have called apple twice and no one seems to have help me. I have set up a mac and aim account, but I am having a problem setting up a video chat with someone else. They also have a mac and aim account, and added them to my buddies list. I am get very disgusted with it. I someone can help me.

Hi,
If she does not have a Camera that could be why you don't see a Camera icon for her.
Also if you do not have Show Video Status ticked in the View Menu of iChat none of your Buddies will have camera icons.
Same for Show Audio Status and those Buddies that can do Audio Only chats.
Last time I checked the AIM for Mac app did not do Video.
If she is using AIM for Mac rather than iChat she will not be able to Video.
Bonjour is for other Macs on you Local Network (LAN) so unless she is with you at your house and has iChat open and Bonjour Enabled you will not be able to See her On line.
If she is using iChat then you need to mac sure our Firewall is allowing iChat and that iChat is allowed through your routing device(s)

Hi, I'm not sure icloud account works with 10.4.11, but you can get a free AOL/AIM account that will work...
Creating a new AIM ID
If your system cannot be upgraded to OS X 10.7.2 or later, you can create a new AIM ID to use with your current version of OS X by following these steps:
Create a new AIM ID from the AOL website.
Add this new account to iChat by following the instructions in this article.
After setting up your AIM account in iChat, Open iChat preferences.
Click the Accounts button in the preferences window, then select your new AIM account from the list of accounts.
Click the Server Settings tab and make sure that the option to use SSL is selected for your new AIM account.
Close the iChat preferences window.
Creating a new Apple ID requires you to re-add your buddies to your new buddy list. Re-add your buddies to your by following the instructions in this article.
Remove your old mac.com account from iChat preferences.

Set up iChat *without* a credit card

I'm trying to set-up iChat for my mother on her iBook, and have run into a roadblock. She never got a .mac address and when I try to create one for her I'm redirected to the new Mobile Me site where I can sign her up for a "free" trial. This requires a credit card that will be billed $109 unless she is able to cancel the subscription within 60 days. Her computer skills are not such that this will be easy for her to manage, and we have no interest whatsoever in Mobile Me services. I seem to recall being able to set up a free .mac address for iChat when I started using it. Is there a workaround so that she can use iChat without the MobileMe issue?

Trying to set up iChat server for office with Macs, PCs and iPads on LAN

Looking for advice on compatable clients and issues setting up iChat server in a small office environment to chat between Macs, PCs, and iPads on the LAN.

I would advise to go arround on the net, in search for applications at your taste.
We successfully installed the jabber clients for windows: Adium and SafetyJabber
For the pad's we use IM Pro
Works all togeather.

Server Setting for ichat 4.o

I haven't been able to log in to my ichat in a while. Doeas anybody know of the server settings and help getting a new password?
It asks to go to my mac account,but I don't know the password for that either.

Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443.
Log back in again.

How to set up ichat to work with gmail audio/video?

Just messaging works fine, anyway to set it up gmail video to fully work via ichat? I'm using Lion. Thank you!

It depends on your Buddy and what app they are using.
iChat to iChat using Google names works in Video.
Most Jabber apps use a Process called Jingle to connect Audio/Video chats
Google has a a version of this that is used within the PC Web Brwoser Plug-in and the Intel Only Mac one and their Standalone App called GoogleTalk for PCs.
This version of Jingle is also not that compatible with other Jabber apps.
iChat uses a process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to connect.
This works with AIM and Trillian on a PC for the AIM Service as well as other iChat users.
So...
Your Google Buddies will have to be a Mac Buddy using iChat.
For others you will have to resort to using your Browser and the Chat in Gmail Web Page or iGoogle.

Cant set up ichat account

Im trying to set up an iChat account...
I go to... Get an ichat account
Fill in all of the info
Then go back to prefs to add in new account, but keep getting the following message
The MobileMe password you entered is not correct.
What am I missing here? Am I supposed to be paying for some other service to get iChat account?

iChat is a Free app if that is what you are saying.
You can use An AIM name which is free to get.
You can use a lapsed Paid for @mac.com name or a Old trial account for Free as well
You can sign up for a trial of @me.com (MobileMe) and the name will work in iChat for 60 days or until you cancel the trial.
Jabber names are free and GoogleTalk is a Jabber server and if you have a Googlemail account you already have an ID.
iChat will Video to any AIM on PC user if they are at AIM 5.9 on XP (AIM movewd the goal posts on that)
iChat will Video to any iChat user with an AIM Valid Name (Includes Apple variations)
iChat will video chat to any iChat User with a Jabber ID if you have a Jabber ID
Read Audio Only chats where you see Video above.
Of course the hidden fact of iChat is that it sends loads of data in a Video chat and your ISP may charge you extra if you exceed your monthly allowance

Setting up iChat for Yahoo

Okay I must be missing something because I don't think I'm setting this up right. I registered with Jabber and have an account. Now what are the steps for setting up yahoo and using yahoo buddies? Please can someone explain it in simple terms because I am having a brain **** or something. Thanks

See the three links on the left of this section.
You have done the the first link stuff.
You need the Second Link stuff (AllForces) and to do that you need or may need to chose a Jabber Server from the third link that does Transports (To Yahoo)
In the third Link the ones that show coloured Service markers can be accessed from any other Jabber Server such as GoogleTalk.
Ones with greyed out Services marker need you to be logged in to that server (with a Jabber ID from them).
Summary.
A Jabber ID
Set up Transport with a Jabber Server using the Allforces info
You may need to pick a Jabber Server that allows access from any other Jabber server from the third Link.
You then need to add you buddy in the correct form normally with a % symbol replacing the @ one in the screen name and adding the Transport after another @ symbol (screename%[email protected])

Help to set up iChat on 2nd computer in network

Have a iMac/10.5.3; iChat v. 4.0.3 on cable modem and 2nd iMac/10.4.11 with iChat v. 3.1.9 on network and can't get 2nd iMac's iChat to function. Previously functioned fine when off network and directly on DSL. Apple tech support said the problem is a Leopard v. Tiger incompatibility on network with iChat. That doesn't sound right to me. Anyone have help/suggestions. Thanks.

Some people are experiencing problems with Leopard to Tiger Chats.
This could be down to Network settings.
We would need to know more about the Network and how it opens ports for Apps and possibly for multiple computers.

Set up ichat account

i tried to create ichat account, but i forgot my email address (me.com), how can i retrieve my me.com address or shall i just create a new one?
secondly, where can i find imessage in mac book pro? i went through application, its not there.

go to https://auth.me.com/authenticate and on the bottom of the screen is your option.
Currently iMessage is unavailable for the Mac. You can only iMessage on iOS devices such as the iPad and the iPhone.

You can then work through those pages listed in that lower menu, left to right.

The info about iChat 4 should be broadly transferable to iChat 5 and 6
Second Note.
iCloud issued @me.com names will not work in iChat 5 or earlier.
(Older MobileMe @me.com names if you have one will work in iChat 5 and earlier)
All Apple IDs need you to keep the password to 16 characters or less. (This is an AIM server issues - they are also valid AIM names)

Does Privacy Setting in iChat applies to Mail also?

I'm curious. If I choose to allow only specific people to send me messages in iChat , does it mean that those people not on my specific list cannot send me an email too? Is it the same as if I have blocked them? I noticed that if you blocked a certain person in iChat, they also can't send you an email.

Thanks Ryan. How about if the persons involved have .mac accounts? I tried blocking somebody from iChat who has a .mac account and when he tried to send me an email it bounced back to him. The error message was something like the account doesn't exist. Was this just a glitch to the system? By the way, I also hold a .mac account and he sent his email to me in this account.

I have an iCloud account through a personal email address, but when I log into iChat on my Mac it asks me for an AIM, @mac.com, or @me.com address? Help?

I have an Apple ID that is a email from an Dial up service I once used.
(actually I can still download mail from this service but cannot send unless I login using Dial up)
When iCloud came out I linked this to iCloud and was given an @me.com ID as well.
Later Apple changed these to @icloud.com and I got one of those as well.
For iTunes, Logging here to post or accessing iCloud in a Browser I can use anyone of on the three "names" but with one common password.
In Messages or iChat though this Apple ID does not work.
It has to be one of the ones Issued by Apple.
Changes in iChat 6 and the two Messages version in Mountain Lion and Mavericks that use a Login to Apple as well as AIM to Verify things before AIM is allowed to "read" the Password means the later IDs issued under iCloud will not work in iChat 5 or earlier.
@mac.com names issued under the .Mac service or as "iChat Names" during the MobileMe period will still work in any version.
If you have the @me.com or @icloud.com IDs use those (even if it says @me.com on the setting in iChat)
Add the ID in full to the AIM setting option.
If you don't then Register a name at AIM.

I have a couple of users who routinely forget to re-set their iChat status to 'available' when arriving for work and opening their laptops. (Of course, iChat usually fails to set their status automatically, even though that option is checked).
Is there a terminal command I can issue to do this for them from ARD?

Ichat, isight set up

Not new to macs, but just setting up ichat and isight. Can I set up ichat account before I get isight hardware?
