Setting up iPads with Apple Configurator

Hi. A building shall buy several iPads for the new owners of the apartments. This building shall have a proper domotics app and surveillance apps.
I want to set up these iPads, which the owners shall keep for them, but these apps should not be deleted... The point is: Could the owners keep and use their iPads and install the apps they want plus the apps of the building not to be deleted? Or me, as the "Installer", do I have to allow them to do so?
Thank you!

There are three ownership models:

  • Setting/keeping a static IP on iPad with Apple Configurator?

    Hey there
We are just getting some iPads into our school and I have been configuring them with Apple Configurator which has gone pretty well so far.
The problem I am having is that each of our iPads has to be assigned a Static IP address (for web filtering reasons) and each time I plug the iPad back in for a refresh or for a new install of an app the iPad switches back to DHCP and I have to manually type the static IP back in.
This is rapidly become a pain the more iPads we get in, is there a way to set Configurator to either leave the IP settings alone or to set it so that it pre-fills the static IP settings?  I've looked through all the profile options and nothing jumps out!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Neal

Configuration profiles do not allow you to apply a static IP address to a device.
Instead, it would be highly recommended to configure static IP addressing within the DHCP server itself. This would accomplish what you want without worrying about which proifle goes on what device, etc. Configurator can also export the MAC addresses to make life easier in setting this up.
Right click the 'All Devices' in the Supervise tab, click Export Info > Device Information > WiFi MAC Address.

  • Should a 5GB back-up take 3 hours to sync to an ipad with Apple Configurator

I'm setting up a cart of 22 iPads for my school.  I created an master and backup using Apple Configurator.  The size of the backup is between 5 and 6GB.  Had no issues creating the backup.  Supervised all the other iPads then began resorting them from the 5GB backup.  I'm on my 3rd hour of syncing.  Should it take this long?

It's quite possible.  I haven't run into your exact situation, but have regularly been syncing about 1 GB to anywhere from 12-60 iPads at a time.  And the major time difference seems to be related more to the amount of data that is being synced instead of how many devices.
With 1 GB it takes me about an hour.  So taking 3+ hours to sync 5 GB to 22 devices sounds reasonable to me.

  • Restoring iPad with Apple Configurator

I have been using Apple configurator to maintain a classroom set of 30 iPads.  We just finished our first use in a class where we had to manually download courses and books onto each iPad (these are being loaned out to different classes).  While I know configurator is unable to put on iBooks, restoring to a clean backup (with all iBooks and Courses deleted) doesn't get rid of the books and associated data (like highlights).  Is there a way to completely wipe the iPad to factory settings?  Or does the ibook/iTunes U course data need to be deleted on each device?   Any ideas?

create and deploy a backup that doesnt have epub metadata in it.
if you have a restore image with the same UDID as the device and the one of its previous backups, the problem is you have itunes checked to sync books when you imported the backup into config'erater.
if you import a backup of a device with no .epub location data, then cant put them on there
you may also be able to go into itunes and delete the appdatastore content for ibooks, ensure the sync option for ibooks is unchecked, construct clean backup, import, deploy.

  • Resetting Disabled iPads with Apple Configurator...

I'm having an issue trying to get iPads reset via Apple Configurator that have been disabled because the student has forgotten their passcode. Apple Configurator just says I need to unlock the iPad before I can reset it. What do I need to do as I work around? I have 5-10 iPads having this same issue.

Have they logged into an iTunes account, or an iCloud account? If they have logged into an iCloud account, there is nothing you can do personally, you'd need to contact Apple.
Here is some information I found previously about calling Apple and removing Activation Lock from an iPad
"Streamlined email process for removing activation lock
AppleCare has announced a new process to assist institutions with returned devices which may be activated locked.  For customers who experience this for the first time please call AppleCare at 800-800-2775 so that the process and needed documentation can be explained.  After the initial call customers can email with the required documentation for all Activation Lock Removal requests."

  • How can I import photos from iPod that is supervised with Apple Configurator?

I have configured a set of iPod Touches (and iPads) with Apple Configurator. User can take photos. But when the iPods are attached to a PC or Mac (including the Mac they were configured on), no pictures are visible or downloadable. The photos are visible in the Photos app on the iPod. What's happening?

    Anthony,
I have found a workaround that just worked for me with iPads,
Connect the iPad to the computer that supervises it, take screen shots (home key and off key pressed together) of the photos as they are displayed in Photos on your iPad and then they will be seen when you launch iPhoto on the host computer.
It takes some time, but may be worth it, I just took screen shots of about 70 photos and they are now in iPhoto so I can export them now and use them.
    It took me 15 minutes.
    Hope this helps, Darryl

  • In Apple Configurator, can I set up different sets of iPads with different apps loaded? Or will all iPads synced with Configurator be required to have the same build?

In Apple Configurator, can I set up different sets of iPads with different apps loaded? Or will all iPads synced with Configurator be required to have the same build?

    Hi jshira86,
You can definitely have different sets of iPads with different apps loaded. When you "supervise" your iPads, you will see that on the left side of the Configurator window there is a "+" sign in the lower left corner. Click it to create a new device group. With this new device group you can choose what apps and configuration profiles you want to install on that group of iPads. Create as many groups as you want to customize the apps and profiles you want on them.
    Hope this answers your question!

  • Apple Configurator 1.3.1 crashes.  I haven't been able to prepare any IPad with the configurator.

New to this process and we are setting up bays for IPads in an education environment.  I'm able to load a profile (unsupervised) onto an IPad but as soon as I choose supervise and prepare the IPad the Apple Configurator crashes with the error message below.  I'm not sure how to proceed from this - running OSX 10.7.5 and configurator 1.3.1.  The Mac book pro was bought to supervise the IPads and not used for anything else.  Have reinstalled configurator without any luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Boy, I sure hope you found a solution to this.  THe exact same thing happened top me, yesterday.  I thought it was the updates to the iTunes store and the release of iOS 7.  However, today, it is still happening.  I was partway through setting up iPads for a 1:1 initiative.  The first 11 worked fine, then the strangeness started.    Most of it seemed to relate to the iTunes store, but the worst part is exactly as you describe, and I have the same setup.   MacBook Pro specifically to manage the iPads.  Configurator crashes whenever a device is hooked up to "supervise" even if it is fresh out of the box.  The details on the crash also show the "Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'ACUUnpackFirmwareOperation cannot fail the operation and without setting an error'"
Oh, did I mention I have to have the iPads set up next week?

This is something the app developer enables within airplay mirroring.
There is nothing you can do to enable that.

  • Restoring iPads through Apple Configurator

We are a library that has 8 iPads that we are trying to set up through Apple Configurator. Everything has been working well so far, but we've been having problems with the check in/out function. The iPad starts the restore process as it's supposed to, but it does not complete (on any of our iPads). The screen turns off and the spinner appears briefly, then the Apple logo appears on the screen. Up to this point things seem fine, but then the apple logo dissapears and it looks like the iPad has turned itself off. It does not turn on again, even after several minutes. I can turn it on manually at this point, and then the restore process will finish correctly. But there is no way to restore without having to turn the iPad back on manually in the middle of the process. Has anyone had this problem with Apple Configurator before? Is it just a bug in the most recent version (we didn't have this problem up until a few weeks ago).
Our iPads are running the latest version of iOS (6.0.1), and the Mac has the latest version of OS X (10.8.1). Apple Configurator is version 1.2.1. Thanks!

  • How can I add an iPad to Apple Configurator without losing the user's settings, folders, etc?

When attempting to add an iPad that has already been in use (for some time) by a particular user into Apple Configurator, I end up having to either wipe the iPad entirely as if it is a new iPad, or restore the user's settings and configuration from iCloud during mini-setup. It seems to be one choice or the other.
Is there a way to add the "old" iPad into Apple Configurator for management purposes yet still be able to restore the user's settings from iCloud? That is - items like: folders, pictures, email settings, app data?

This isnt true. Connecting an unsupervised device to configurator and supervising it will wipe the device, there is no way around that. You can attempt an iCloud restore from here, but anything not backed up prior to supervising the device will be erased when supervising it. I have never tried to restore data from an unsupervised iPad so I have no clue if everything will come back.
Let me clarify... You can successfully restore an iCloud backup of an unsupervised iPad to a new (i.e. different) iPad and have it Supervised with data intact. The process below will allow Configurator to Supervise a device without wiping it when an iCloud backup from a different unsupervised iPad is restored to it.
Try it… Get 2 new unsupervised iPads… we'll call them iPad "A" and iPad "B." Take iPad "A" and install a few apps, take a few photos, change the background, create a new document in Pages, etc. Run an iCloud backup of iPad "A" using your Apple ID. This is our unsupervised backup of iPad "A."
Now take new unsupervised iPad "B" and start running through the setup assistant. When you get to the restore screen, choose to restore from iCloud backup. Log in with your Apple ID. Select the backup for iPad "A." The backup will restore and then the iPad will restart. Once it restarts, you get to a "Hello" screen on the iPad. At this point, plug the iPad into your Configurator computer. On the Prepare screen, turn Supervision ON and select "Don't restore backup." Click Prepare.
Configurator will not wipe the iPad. It will run through the supervision process but not wipe it. Once complete, you'll see that iPad "B" is now exactly the same as iPad "A", but if you go to Settings -> General -> Profiles on iPad "B" you will see a Supervision profile installed.
The key here is to use a different iPad from the originally backed up iPad. You can't restore the backup of iPad "A" to iPad "A" again and supervise it without wiping it. But you can take the backup of unsupervised iPad "A" and restore it to iPad "B" and retain apps, data, and settings of iPad "A" but with the Supervision profile.
    Hope this clarifies things!
    ~Joe
I see where your going with that. I dont have any way to reproduce this scenario in my environment, but I will take your word for it that this works. I have only ever plugged in an unsupervised device to configurator and gone through the setup, which always wipes the device. If your saying theres a way around that you should give that a shot OP.
