Setting up iPhoto with saved iPhoto image library

My 5 year old iMac died and I want to use a backed up iPhoto library on my Mac Book Pro. The library is in Users:\my photos on the new macbook. How do I import the pictures?

I want ILife off of my computer
Why? Without the iPhoto portion of it you'll never get any photos onto your iPod since you'll probably need iPhoto to update and/or repair your library. Give more detail of what you did and what you experienced and maybe we can help.
Otherwise just use one of the application deletion apps (search at VersionTracker.com for "delete applications" and you'll get a list of possible candidates) to delete Garageband, iWeb, iMovie, iDVD and iPhoto. Then you'll be rid of iLife.

  • Error with saving of photo library

    I am getting this error message:
    "An error occurred while trying to save your photo library.
    Some recent changes may be lost. Make sure your hard disk has enough space and that iPhoto is able to access the iPhoto Library."
    My most recently imported photos are not being saved into the library. Please help.
    Many thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    This sounds like a damaged database file.
    Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
    To create and populate a new library:
    Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
    In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
    Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
    Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
    Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
    When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
    In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Issues with saving disc images using Toast 8

    I am having issues saving disc images to my portable hard drive using Toast 8.
    First, I'm attempting to save Dual Layer disc images to my portable hard drive for future use. I turn compression off and select DL DVD above the burn button, and select "save as disc image" from the file menu. As that point the program seem to freeze and I get the whirly-spinning rainbow. After a few minutes a window asks me if I'm buring single or dual layer. I select dual layer. Then a box appears that says "writing ...".
    After it's complete I check the portable hard drive and I've got EIGHT disc images all titled "SAMPLE DISC IMAGE TITLE.TOAST.001" .....002, 003, 004, 005, 006, 007, 008. File numbers 002-008 open in itunes, and file number 1 mounts with an error that will cause Toast to crash.
    This is so weird and confusing.
    When I save the image to the desktop, its saves fine. BUT, when I try to copy it to the portable hard drive it gets all the way to the end and reports an error message.
    Please help. Thanks

    After several weeks of searching and an error code 1309 I discovered the issue is not with TOAST but with my external hard drive. The drive format is FAT32 which does not allow single files to be transfered in excess of 4gb. I was attempting to create disc images of dual layered dvd's which can be up to 8 gb. Since the drive was incapable of accepting a file that size it created seperate files that made up the size of the original file.
    Example: 7.8gb file transfered to FAT32 external LACIE drive. Lacie creates 8 files: 7 are 1gb, 1 is .8gb.
    There is probably a program that could put these files back together but I've already experienced too great of an ordeal.
    Unless the user needs the external drive for use on a PC & MAC there is not a reason to have the format of the drive set to FAT32.
    I will be using Disk Utility to reformat the drive to "HFS+" in hopes to solve this problem.

    I want to create a pdf from an image library that's shared across a server by 20 mac users.

    the user can double click and image and it will open in photoshop.
    I've tried a few things via Acrobat pro and Bridge but nothing seems to match what I want.
    Can anyone suggest anything?

  • Setting the iPhoto Default Library Folder

    I'm sure there is a simple answer to this question, but I can't find it. Can the physical location of the default library folder be changed to an external hard drive?

    Hi Howard,
    sure can!
    Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library folder to a Mac formatted external drive.
    Launch iPhoto while holding down the Option key.
    At the prompt, choose to open another library.
    Navigate to the library on the external and highlight it.
    Hit the "open" button
    iPhoto will open the library on the external and from now on will use this library to import images too. This will now be your working library. Make sure everything is working correctly and everything is fine in the library.
    You can then delete the library on the internal if you wish.

  • Help with saving my image as text

    Hi,
    I have to submit my Java project tomorrow and as part of it we must build a density map and save the image as a text file. I have the programme working fine however I can't seem to get the image to save properly as a text file.
    Basically I have to read in a raster 300 by 300 text file filled with 0 values and one 255 which is where a bomb explodes. I get the x and y positions of this after turning it into a 2d array, then move a number of bacteria particles around and then build a density map which in a 1d int array.
    I now want to save my new image that shows where the particles landed in a SaveMapMenuListnr class and I tried to use a previous practical's SaveGreyMenuListnr (which converted an image to greyscale when it saved it) class to help me with this but now I am in a mess with it as you can see from the below code! All i want to do is save what I have on the screen into a text file and hopefully retain the image on the screen as it is but I have no idea whether to use the 2d array or 1d array and whether the code I have (and which parts of it) is of any use.
    Please see below code, thanks.
    // Declares a new class called SaveMapMenuListnr and implements ActionListener
    public class SaveMapMenuListnr implements ActionListener {
            // Declares a global integer variable to store the compressedInt values
            int compressedInt;
            // Makes an object of ButList and sets it to null
            ButList arrayValues = null;
            // Creates a private object of DisplayPanel and sets it to null
         private DisplayPanel panel = null;
            // Declares a new instance of SaveMapMenuListnr and passes in the DisplayPanel and ButList objects
         public SaveMapMenuListnr (DisplayPanel pn, ButList bl) {
              panel = pn;
                    arrayValues = bl;
         } // End of instance
           // This method is invoked to read in an image when the Action Event occurs
         public void actionPerformed (ActionEvent ae) {
            // These methods get copies of the 2D and 1D int arrays from the arrayValues object of the ButList class
            int [][] gotDensity = arrayValues.getDensity();
            int [] gotOneDintArray = arrayValues.getOneDintArray();
            // Builds a file dialog and shows it on the screen
         FileDialog saveDialog = new FileDialog(new Frame(), "Save file", FileDialog.SAVE);
         saveDialog.setVisible(true);
            // Sets the save file equal to the chosen directory and the open file
            File file = new File(saveDialog.getDirectory() + saveDialog.getFile());
            // Creates a null object of FileWriter
            FileWriter fileWriter = null;
            // Creates a new bombMap image
            Image bombMap = null;
            // Sets bombMap equal to the image on display in the panel
            bombMap = panel.getDisplayImage();
            // Gets the width and height of the image
            int width = bombMap.getWidth(panel);
            int height = bombMap.getHeight(panel);
            try {
            fileWriter = new FileWriter(file);
            for (int i = 0; i < 300; i++) {
                Color color = new Color(gotOneDintArray);
    int red = color.getRed();
    int green = color.getGreen();
    int blue = color.getBlue();
    double temp = 0.56 * (double)green + 0.33 *(double) red + 0.11 *(double) blue;
    color = new Color((int)temp,(int)temp,(int)temp);
    int compressedInt = color.getRGB();
    String grey = String.valueOf (temp);
    fileWriter.write(grey + " ");
    gotOneDintArray[i] = compressedInt;
    fileWriter.close();
    catch(IOException f) {
    f.printStackTrace();
    bombMap = panel.getToolkit().
    createImage(new MemoryImageSource(width, height, gotOneDintArray, 0, width));
    // This sets "bombMap" as the DisplayImage and instructs the paint method in the Image Panel class file to repaint
         panel.setDisplayImage(bombMap);
         panel.repaint();
    } // End of ActionPerformed method
    } // End of class

    I don't understand the question. What kind of format do you expect the text file to have?

  • Aperture 3 hanging when working with 120,000 image library

    I love Aperture. Have used Aperture since v1, now on 3, Snow Leopard 10.6.6. MacPro 3.0 with 20GB RAM and four 7200 3TB HDrives. Shoot a Nikon D3 and others.
    I have a big referenced library running internally on Drive 2, images are internally on drive 4. About 120,000 in total, mostly RAW (NEF).
    For some time I have had hangs, spinning ball. Some will clear, but most will not, requiring force quit.
    I have repaired permissions, on hard drives as well as in Aperture.
    Hangs happen when I click on a Folder, or sometimes when selecting image.
    I moved everything to a Referenced system to correct this problem, but seemed to not solve things.
    I do also use Aperture to catalog Photoshop files, so dont know whether this creates an increased RAM or CPU issue.
    Have sent crash reports to Apple, but not heard back yet.
    I shoot professionally, sometimes 2,000 per day, so need this to become more reliable.
    Any suggestions.
    Many thanks!

    Thanks so much for your time.
    You're welcome. I appreciate your mentioning it.
    I have found leaving the Activity Monitor on, where I watch the RAM / MEM usage, is a clue as to whether its still thinking.
    I do the same. In addition to AM, I use +iStat Menus 3+, a nifty system-reporting menulet. Recommended (just a satisfied user).
    I also need to tell you I do allow my assistant, using a 27"iMac, to access my MASTER LIBRARY from her computer. (Different Aperture 3 version, and mine is shut down).
    Supposedly this is ok (acording to Apple) but I am v suspicious. Sometimes it takes forever to load, and I have seen "strange" things like keywords go missing.
    Until you have everything working well ... can you refrain from opening your Library using different program installations? I think you are right to be suspicious. (And trouble-shooting strategy would favor limiting problems and then bringing things back as a way of isolating the cause.)
    Please check out my response to the others - I stated library size/capacities.
    I don't think Library size is the problem.
    I wish I could limit my Projects to 500 Masters, but most of the shoots I do are sports, where I will shoot 1,000 to 3,000 images in a day or two.
    However, it can be done if this is the issue.
    It could be voodoo, but it has become part of the more-or-less generally accepted best practices. You do know that in addition to selecting multiple Projects in order to see all of their images in the Viewer, you can also put Projects in a Folder and just select the Folder. Selecting a Folder in the Library Inspector will show the contents of all Projects and Albums "held" by that Folder. You might -- as an example -- make a Folder for a game, and then put each quarters' shots in its own Project.
    I run dual monitors. HOWEVER, I am suspicious of my NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT card. 512 VRAM, 1920x1200 dual outputs. Not sure if this is my problem.
    However, I can run Photoshop 5, DW5, InDesign, etc, along with the normal appls, with no problem. Sometimes I have 15-20 PSD files open, and I never use all my RAM.
    I run huge Library on a machine w. 4 GB RAM. I don't think your RAM is the source of your problems.
    I can't with any expertise address the issue of the video card. My hunch is that this is one of the rough edges of heavy Aperture use, but it's just a hunch.
    Rejected/Trash. I find it takes forever to empty Aperture Trash. Have you found that> Did you know you have to empty twice, from Ap AND from OS10.6?
    IME, it gets better if you do it often (all the way to system Trash). I have in past had to wait hours for the Aperture Trash to empty. Haven't seen that is a while, though.
    Im going to try and move the MAIN LIBRARY to another, newer, drive. See if this works.
    One of the biggest advantages will be the defragmentation of the hundreds of thousands of Library files.
    I have wondered whether I should invest in a Solid State Internal drive.
    Thoughts on that?
    Go for it. I will buy one the day I can afford one. I am sure it is the very best performance investment you can make for Aperture.
    Cheers. Post when you've found something out.

  • Problem with saving Contact Images?

    In the process of creating a new contact, I took a photo of someone I probably won't see for awhile instead of choosing an existing photo. But when I look for under "camera roll"... I don't see it there. But it still happens to be under the contact. I know you can extract the photos from my computer, but when I tried looking for it in the 100apple folder, it wasn't there.
    My question, do you know where I can find the image I took after choosing "take image" under the contact menu? Especially if I don't use Outlook for sync my contacts... Thanks!

    docs44 wrote:
    I think you misunderstood what the person was saying. looking in the 100App folder doesn't mean it is jailbroken. Mine's not and I can access that. When connect your iPhone to the computer you get the message asking if you want to view the files. Or when it's connected you can go to "my computer" on a PC and access the photos that way too. If you choose to then you can access those files which have photos. The same photos as the camera roll.
    Thank you for the clarification.
    But yes, since he took the photo from the Contacts App and assigned directly from there as opposed to taking a pic with the Photo app and then assigning with an existing photo, the photo doesn't go to the camera roll but just to the contacts database (which is off limits to users). The best he can do is sync and get it from his Address book (though much smaller).

  • Help with saving an image - Urgent!

    Hi,
    I have an application that opens an image and modifies it, but how do I save the modified version? I have been searching the web, and I just get more and more confused - what's the easiest way to do this? I don't really understand much of what I have been reading... :(
    At the moment my application saves, but it saves as text. Is it easy to modify this to save as jpg?
    Here is my save and open code:
    void open_actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
    int status = chooser.showOpenDialog(this);
    if (status == JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION) {
    File file = chooser.getSelectedFile();
    String filename = file.getAbsolutePath();
    ImageIcon icon = new ImageIcon(filename);
    jLabel1.setIcon(icon);
    long length = file.length();
    String name = file.getName();
    jLabel1.setToolTipText(length + "bytes, " + name);
    titledBorder1.setTitle(name);
    statusBar.setText(filename);
    void save_actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
    int status = chooser.showSaveDialog(this);
    if (status == JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION) {
    File file = chooser.getSelectedFile();
    String filename = file.getAbsolutePath();
    ImageIcon icon = new ImageIcon(filename);
    try {
    FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(file);
    String text = statusBar.getText();
    byte data[] = text.getBytes();
    fos.write(data);
    } catch (IOException ex) {
    System.err.println("Error while writing");
    Grateful for all comments!!!

    The following works, but only if you have the package. The comments in com/sun/image/codec/jpeg/JPEGCodec.java say:
    Note that the classes in the com.sun.image.codec.jpeg package are not
    part of the core Java APIs. They are a part of Sun's JDK and JRE

    these classes, developers cannot depend on their availability in
    non-Sun implementations. We expect that equivalent functionality
    will eventually be available in a core API or standard extension.So if you want to distribute your program, the user can't be sure if it runs on his platform.
    import java.io.*;
    import com.sun.image.codec.jpeg.*;
         File saveTarget=new File(filename);
         FileOutputStream fos=new FileOutputStream(saveTarget);
         JPEGImageEncoder enc=JPEGCodec.createJPEGEncoder(fos,
           JPEGCodec.getDefaultJPEGEncodeParam(imageToSave)
         enc.encode(imageToSave);
         fos.close();

  • Can Time Capsule host an Aperture image library efficiently?

    In our household, we have several MacBook Pros with SSD drives, which don't have a lot of storage space. Since we take a lot of high-resolution pictures in .RAW format (app. ~25 MB per file), it would be nice if we could store all of our pictures remotely on the Time Capsule, and access the image library from our laptops, without needing to copy the files to our local harddrives.
    So, is it possible to use Time Capsule as the only storage device for our Aperture image library, in a way that we can open and work with the library remotely (wirelessly) through Aperture on several Macs?
    I am guessing that this is possibly by simply sharing the files, but there are a few things that I am concerned about, such as:
    Will my images files/Aperture library get corrupted/damaged when a computer looses connection to the Time Capstule in the midst of editing?
    What will happen if several users attempt to access/modify several images on the Time Capsule at the same time?
    Will you get good performance from Aperture with a very large, remote image library?
    I have also considered getting an Mac mini with OS X Lion Server to do the same job, but setting it up a bit differently. Possibly setting up a Git repository for the images, but I would much prefer a simpler solution, which is why I'm thinking about doing this with a Time Capsule (using it as a "NAS" of sorts).
    Thanks in advance for any help, advice and suggestions.

    Of course I found this right after posting my questions...
    Also, it is strongly recommended that the Aperture library be stored on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing the Aperture library on a network share can also lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
    So I guess using the Time Capsule is out of the question, but I would still be interested in hearing from you guys if you have any good suggestions on how to work with a large image library in Aperture remotely through the network, if at all possible.

  • Saving an image in Root folder of tomcat

    Hello,
    i have an urgent problem with saving an image in the root folder of tomcat, which I want to do without having to specify the entire path.
    I have created a class, which i use as a bean in a jsp to save an image to the tomcat root folder.
    If I use the following command, the image is saved:
    ChartUtilities.saveChartAsJPEG(new File(
    "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Tomcat 5.5/webapps/trader/images/charts/1.jpg"), chart, 550, 260);
    However, I should be doing it like this, which doesn't work and throws me an IO exception:
    ChartUtilities.saveChartAsJPEG(new File("images/charts/1.jpg"), chart, 550, 260);
    Cheers

    Didn't we have this discussion in another thread? You can't give something urgently. It's semantically anaphoricular.

  • Saved an image as library and now all in iphoto images disappeared

    I was saving an image from email to iphoto, and somehow it was saved as my iphoto library. All of my photos are now gone, there were hundreds, and the one image I just saved is just there. Where are my photos??? Don't they get saved somewhere on my hard drive aside from being hosted iphoto. I have a MAC AIr and iPhoto '11.

    Rename it back.

  • What is the best way to re-build an iphoto library with 10,000+ images?

    The iphoto built in library rebuild function does not find the 10,000 photos that are in my originals and data folders. Why not? Also, If I use the Fat Cat software to build a new library will it it create 10,000 new files?
    I eventually want to remove these files from my computer all together, but I want to organize them first.
    These photos used to be in iphoto, but when I upgraded to Mountain Lion my iphoto library kind of emptied itself.
    Honestly, I would skip putting these 10,000 photos back into iphoto and simply put them on an external if finding the files in the iphoto library "folder" wasn't so complicated. It's not nesessary for me to store all of my photos on my laptop hard drive, but I'm an artists and a documentor so i would like to keep them.
    Thanks for any and all advice!!!
    I've been reading lots of threads on here and the information is soooo good and helpful. At least now I have some idea of how iphoto works where a few days ago it felt like magic!

    Yes, move them:
    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Do you think iphoto's normal rebuild function might work when I'm telling it to look for my externally located library?
    Impossible to say, but worth a try. If not then:
    Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
    This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
    To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:

  • How can i share my iphoto 11 library with another user on the same mac?

    hi
    i recently added a new user account for my wife on my macbook pro. now we want to share the existing iphoto 11 library, which is on my account, with the new user account. i'm using os x lion.
    many thanks!
    davide from sitzerland

    For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
    If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
    Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
    Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
    If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
    (You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
    In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
    However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Iphoto backup, with regards original images.

    OK, background. I have been searching on here but maybe not using the correct search terms.
    I upgraded from an eMac with OSX 10.4 to a shiny new iMac (eMac had 38GB HD so images were stored on external drives). I stopped using iPhoto in 2006. In 2006 (or there abouts) I started to manage my images through folders and a strict back up across three hard drives and DVD including one hard drive kept off site (backup up once a month on the off site drive). I also started to use Spider Oak (online backup) last month when I realised there was a hole in my plan.
    What has thrown me is the size of the iPhoto library when I imported the 120GB of folder images. The iPhoto Library is 160GB, no problem for my external hard drives to back up but my online storage will get a hit as I pay for the privilege, under the limit at the moment but 200GB is my plan before I have to buy another load. I have paid for Spideroak for a year so moving is not an option at the moment and I do like the plan.
    The other possible issue or non issue is that (as far as I am aware) spideroak will check file names to stop duplication, so unless the names are altered on import, I should be able to tell it to look at the iPhoto library but still have to upload the extra 40GB or so (on 60mbit upload but time is realy used in prep before sending). If it needs to be redone then I want it done right, last upload of 120gb took a five days (computer only running in the day not 24/7).
    So. Am I safe using Spideroak (or any other online) to look at the iPhoto "Master" folder, that is where the originel images seem to reside?
    I am not worried if I lose iPhoto functionality, its the original un altered images I am concerned with or do I need to reconsider?
    Or keep the existing backup folders option and use iphoto to look at those folders and not backup iPhoto? (I am using another HD to use for time machine)
    This is driving me nuts, I feel a simple safe solution is there but not seeing it, if it were just on hard drive then I would be OK.

    There is no suitable online back up for an iPhoto Library. I would also suggest that you bear in mind how long it would take to download 160 gigs of data - and bear in mind that all these online services manage their bandwidth - and that means they throttle downloads. We've seen reports on here from folks who restore took days... You'e seeing what the upload takes, so it's a real consideration.
    I would be very, very wary of setting any app to look into the Library package and back up the masters. FIne as long as copy is all it does, but what is all that "preparing"? And remember your camera can easily produce multiple files with the same filename.
    Personally, I use flickr for just the job you refer to.
    Or keep the existing backup folders option and use iphoto to look at those folders and not backup iPhoto? (I am using another HD to use for time machine)
    That's called running a Referenced Library. TL, DR: Don't.
