Setting up iTunes for a family

I recently purchased an iPhone (my first Apple device).  My wife and kids have iPods and iPads and use one iTunes account.  Now that I'm into the Apple world, somehow on my phone it has my wifes iTunes id.  Being new to this, I was wondering if someone can point me to documentation on how to set this up for a family with multiple devices.  We each want our own contacts, playlists, etc.  But if someone buy an app or song, it should be available to all the devices.  Please help.
Thanks!

  • Itunes for multiple family members

My situation is I've been using iTunes since its inception and built quite a library. I've been through multiple ipods and now on to iphones for multiple family members. All the while using one itunes account on separate devices for multiple family members. Now that we have iphones its become necessary to create separate icloud accounts for each family member. This creates a problem for those with new icloud accounts. The iTunes music library can no longer be shared on separate devices (that I know of). The music library and playlists I have built over years cannot be shared with those devices that now have separate icloud accounts. I am aware of "family sharing" and have set that up going forward but how do I resolve the issue of all the music and playlists that were shared when we all used one itunes account, prior to creating separate icloud accounts? I hope this makes sense. For example my wife and son no longer have access to any of the music/playlists on their iphones that they used to have prior to creating their own accounts. Even though all purchases made before and after creating separate icloud accounts were made using the same credit card.
I believe I could just go back to having the other devices sign back into my itunes account and I think that may resolve the issue but what happens to purchases that were made on the other devices while they were signed into their own accounts? Another point that comes up is that we all have gift card balances on each itunes account. This is so confusing

This is great news as I've been struggling with this issue for some time. Mainly because my wife is a little old school and likes to put music on CD's and this solves that problem. Thanks again!!

  • How do I set up iTunes for multiple Windows identities?

We are a family of 5, all with separate Windows XP identities on the same PC.  Each has an iPod, and several of us have additional devices (iPhone, iPad, iTouch, iMac).  Everyone has their own email addresses.  But right now, every device is using a single instance of iTunes, and they are all using my email address. With stuff being shared with iCloud, I am thinking that now is the time to segregate everyone into their own iTunes accounts.
How do I accomplish this, in such a way that all our tunes and apps can still be shared?  It is as easy as setting up iTunes on each person's Windows identity and then linking that new instance of iTunes to the folders where the music and apps are?
Asking before I do this because I really don't want to screw this up.  Thanks to all - in advance - for you help and suggestions.

    Hi Diesel,
Many thanks for your reply. I have been doing that, but running it as an administrator means that my calendar info is not synced. I get a blank calendar on my iPad.  I need to be able to set it up so that users can run it in their own accounts. There must be a way to do this?

  • Set up itunes for windows

My nephew, 12 years old, got an ipod touch as a gift from parents.
They asked me to set up itunes on his pc notebook (I guess with windows vista installed) since they think I am the apple-guy in the family.
Everything works fine, aside that: I can't see photos and videos (already present on his pc) in itunes: the corresponding folders in itunes are empty.
Having always used itunes for mac I never had this issue, since both photos and videos were already available in itunes since the beginning.
My question: how to import photos and videos in itunes for windows?

Photos - put Photos you want them sync over to your Device in a folder.
Connect your iPod touch to your PC, select iTouch under "Devices" on iTunes left Pane, on right Pane select Photo tab.  Check the box "Sync Photo with" and click the box next to it to direct it to the folder where the Photos are.  Click the SYNC or APPLY button on the lower right window.
Videos - iTunes supports only mov, m4v, mp4 formats,  You can either drag these video files to itunes  library or go to menu Add Folder to library...  The Videos will appear under Movies library.
To sync - same as Photo but this time go to Movies tab

  • How do you change the setting in iTunes for the time-space between songs in your playlist?

I need help changing my setting in iTunes, the time-space between songs.  In setting up iTunes I selected the "three-second" and now wish I'd selected "five-seconds".  Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks.

    Thank you Chris.
This was not the exact solution for my problem but by misreading your instructions I accidentally found the answer. Just as simple as you suggest. I had already ensured the Crossfade was unchecked in iTunes. What had actually changed with the last software update was the settings on my ipod. I can't believe I never checked this before.
    The solution:
    ipod settings > Playback
    Audio Crossfade = "Off"

  • Setting in itunes for sync file size/format

I heard there was a setting in itunes the would allow you to pick a smaller files size/format at the time of syncing to ypour ipod so during the sync the files would be compressed. Is this true. My cd collection is ripped and saved in lossless and i was thinking of syncing at 320kbps to see if i noticed a difference. It would be nice if this was ture so i can save all my cds at lossless and just compress when i sync if i want.
    Thanks!!!

So that will compress all the larger files on the ipod to 128kbps ACC....then i can load more lossless till memory is full again and, do that again, and it will compress those new larger files to 128kbps AAC????
Also, can you pick another file size. I already know i loath the sound quality of 128. I was hoping to do something like this but choose 320

  • I am so completely confused with how to best set up iTunes for family use

Okay, I'm literally going crazy trying to get my Apple "ecosystem" set up. First, I'll try and explain my setup and then what I'm hoping to accomplish.
    My setup:
    1) Mac Mini - this is where my "master" iTunes library resides. iTunes Store is logged in with our single Apple ID that we use for all iTunes & App Store purchases. This Mac Mini also is where we store all of our photos within iPhoto.
    2) My wife and I each have an iPhone which is set up for wireless syncing to iTunes.
    3) My wife and I each have MacBook Pros.
    Here's what's working:
    1) Sharing all of the iTunes music and iPhoto pictures to my AppleTV (3rd generation) - This is working as expected.
    Here's what's I want to accomplish:
    1) We would like to be able to make purchases from the iTunes or App Store from either our Mac Mini, iPhones or MacBook Pros using our single Apple ID and have these purchases be available to all of our devices including the iPhones, MacBook Pros, Mac Mini and AppleTV.
Ultimately, all of our purchases should physically reside on our Mac Mini where we sync the songs & apps we want to our iPhones wirelessly. What I'm finding out, is that purchases made on our iPhones and MacBooks will not download to the Mac Mini iTunes library. iTunes on the Mac Mini shows the purchases but when I try and download them I get a message that says "This computer is already associated with an Apple ID". I figured since iTunes on the Mac Mini is logged in with the single Apple ID I would be all set. What does this message mean?
I'm sure to have some follow-up questions but I'm hoping to get this process started with this one first. Thanks for any help or advice you can provide.

    Maybe this will help:

  • How do I set up itunes for a user account on my windows machine so that it starts?

    Hi,
My laptop was recently fitted with Windows Enterprise Edition.  I have a regular user account, and also a local administrator account.  I can get iTunes to run on my windows machine as an administrator, but not as a user.  All my calendar entries and contacts are in my user account, and I want to be able to start iTunes in that account.  What settings do I need to change?

  • ITunes for the family

My situation is that my son, now 12, has his own iPhone and has been purchasing his games, apps and music on my itunes account.  Am I able to transfer all his purchases to his new itunes account or is all his data and game progress gone?

  • The basics - setting up email for my family

I have a .MAC account and want to set up my daughter with a secure email address. Sounds like I need to 'purchase' a .MAC account for her so that she has an address then use 'the power of MAC' to create a safe environment.
    Is this correct?

A GoogleMail account (free) will probably do all you require if you only require email and nothing more. .Mac (soon to become MobileMe) is no more 'secure' than any other email providers out there.

  • I just bought apple tv and would like to set it up for my family for christmas.  i have a samsung tv and yamaha receiver.  where do i plug in  hdmi?  i assume into receiver but not sure.  also, plug is on back of receiver so much get behind all equipment

i just bought apple tv and would like to set it up so it works right away.  i have samsung tv and yamaha receiver.  do i plug hdmi into receiver?  i assume plugs are in back of machined so i have to get behind all electronic equipment?  does that make sense?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your receiver is connected to your TV by HDMI and has a spare HDMI input port, then yes plug the HDMI cable from the Apple TV into your receiver.
If that's not possible the HDMI lead from the Apple TV can go straight to the TV and you can connect the receiver to the Apple TV with an optical audio cable.

  • Can't get into my own account after setting up a second for a family member

How do I get back into my own account after setting up another for a family member on my iMac?

In System Preference/Users and Groups select Login Options  ( not Login Items)
Select List of users next to 'Display Login window as'
Make sure you know both yours and your family members login name and password  before you log out
You could also use Fast user switching by clicking on the name in the menu bar and switching users

  • How do I set up different icloud accounts for each family member and make them able to access them on our common mac using their user name on the mac.  I am doing this to make sure kids don't get access to our messages.

We have several apple products in the family.  I would like to set up different icloud accounts for each memeber.  I lately noticed having activated different devices with same icloud account that each device can access everyones messages by going in their settings and clicking which number or email they want to use to see messages.  Let me make sure I am understood, on my sons ipod in his messages settings he can switch to my cell number and see all my messages.  Re setting the devices isn't my great issue but can i set up each kids user account on my mac to their individual icloud accounts?
    Thanks!

Any devices connected to the same icloud account can sync all the data on that account.  For this reason an icloud account is really for a single user.
On a mac, if each user has their own account, then the itunes for that mac account should be set up to connect to that user's icloud account (System preferences>icloud).

  • How do I set up iCloud in Lion for a family sharing 1 Apple ID?

There are three people in our family.  Mom...Dad...Daughter.  Up till now, we have used 1 Apple ID and password for iTunes Store and Mac App Store purchases.  We used MY e-mail address for the Apple ID.  I installed Lion 7.2 on my daughter's MBP yesterday.  (My wife and I are still using 10.6.8) When it came to setting up iCloud on her MBP I thought I needed to use the previously mentioned Apple ID and password.  Much to my surprise, when I finished I noticed her Safari bookmarks had become MY bookmarks and her Address Book had become populated with all the entries in MY Address Book!  Her login picture also changed from a nice picture of her to a picture of her bald dad!!!  Who knows what other surprises are in store for us.  We just bought 3 iPhone 4S's and I am reluctant to set them up for fear of finding all 3 with my Address Book entries, Safari Bookmarks, etc. if I use this single Apple ID again.  BUT, I do want to continue using our current Apple ID and password for family iTunes Store and Mac App Store purchases (music, apps, books, etc.).  Is there a solution to this?  What do I do?

I apologize for semi-hijacking the topic of this thread from "Multiple iCould IDs with single AppleID. Possible?"
Perhaps my reasoning for doing this was flawed, but here it is.  That thread was started back in June when the real details of iCloud were somewhat conjecture.  It is now about 14 pages long.  There are some recent posts to the thread, but for the life of me I can't tease a solution to my question above out of them.  I just may not be reading carefully enough.  If so, I apologize.
What I am looking for is more of a STEP BY STEP guide to setting up iOS 5 and OS 10.7.2 for a family in my situation with my needs.  I think I do represent a fair segment of users.
If the monitors of this forum think my thread should be tack on to the end of the above mentioned forum...by all means do so.
Honestly, If Steve were alive today I think he would not be happy with this situation faced by Apple customers.  Steve always said his guiding mantra for his products was..."It just works."  I honestly believe he meant that.  But, with regard to this iCould business...for normal pedestrian users like myself,  I would have to say, "It just doesn't work."
