Setting Up Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000

Hopefully this is the right section to post question.
I can't seem to get Expose to work - I've downloaded and installed the Microsoft Intellitype software - but I can't get the function keys set up the way I want when I go into System Preferences - Keyboard. I've tried enabling and disabling intellitype and various combinations and permutions but can't get the Expose functions - all windows, show desktop, etc to work. The mute and volume buttons work but within Intellitype I can't set up the My Favorites buttons either. Any links to good instructions - I haven't been able to find any good help via a Google search.
I am wondering if I perhaps need to delete a plist file somewhere to enable me to re-set things - but I can't find where this might be located. Thanks.

To be honest I don't know what the other two indicator lights are for on the Erg 4000 keyboard so I couldn't quickly test them - if you have a quick insight it would be appreciated.
From top to bottom (they also have matching symbols on the keys they're for):
Num Lock
Caps Lock
Scroll Lock
F Lock
Num Lock and Scroll Lock both do nothing in the Mac OS. There are no such keys on an Apple keyboard, so there is no association to those keys in the OS itself.
I don't know who people use the junk stock Apple keyboards - or any of the high end flat ones for that matter. Their wrists will suffer for it someday.
For those who have never used an ergo keyboard before, they feel very odd at first. You get so used to pulling your elbows in to your side to get your hands and wrists straight to the keyboard that you don't consciously realize how much you're straining 100% of the time to hold that position. The ergo keyboard lets you just move your hands to the keys, and they fall right under your fingers. What feels odd to new users coming from straight boards is having to remember NOT to pull in their elbows. Let them relax and your hands fall into place.
But is there a trend going on in this regard on this forum? Because people should only answer if they have specific experience with that particular issue - expecially if is referring to outside hardware or software. Do you know what I mean?
Mmm, yes. But at least the attempts are will intentioned. The obvious suggestions are to check the keyboard settings in the System Preferences and Exposé. While they may not have the keyboard, a person who does may not have thought to look there, rather than only the Microsoft Keyboard panel. There are times when I have somewhat blindly made suggestions that got the person who started the post to rethink how they were approaching the problem. While my suggestion was a bit generic, it turned on a light in their thought process and they looked where they hadn't thought to before, and fixed the problem. So sometimes even a somewhat vague response is better than none. But yes, it is always best if the person who answers can actually look at the same hardware/software.

  • Is Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 compatible with Mac mini?

Hi, I am thinking of getting a Mac mini. I currently have a Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 which I use with my HP laptop. Does anyone know if it is fully compatible with Mac mini?

It is compatible -- to a certain extent.
The Windows key will become the  (Command) key. The Mac will let you know that the keyboard you plugged in couldn't be identified, so it will ask you to type the Z key, followed by the / key. Choose ANSI and you should be ready to use the keyboard. Any multimedia keys or extra keys not part of the standard keyboard layout will have no function. The F12 key becomes the Eject key.
(PS/2 keyboards are not compatible with the Mac, unless you purchase a $15 PS/2-to-USB converter.)

  • Microsoft ergonomic keyboard zooms instead of scrolls

I have a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard 4000. In Firefox 3.6, the zoom slider on the keyboard worked as a scroll wheel in Firefox. After upgrading to Firefox 4, the slider is back to the zoom function. I have tried several "hacks" and the slider acts as a scroll wheel in every program except FF.

Firefox 4 changed the window class from MozillaUIWindowClass to MozillaWindowClass.
    # In MS Windows kill the "itype.exe" process.
    # Open the command.xml file with your favorite editor as Administrator
    # Locate the UniqueName="MozillaWindowClass" AppName="Netscape" in the parent element "All". Mine was line 2967.
    # Change the KeySeq="ctrl add" and KeySeq="ctrl subtract" to KeySeq="pageup" and KeySeq="pagedown" respectively.
    # Start >> Run >> itype.exe
You can leave the everything else the same for backward compatibility.

  • Microsoft Ergo Keyboard 4000

We have multiple PCs with the Microsoft Ergo Keyboard 4000. There are quite a number of keyboards that stops responding after logging off of Windows 7 Enterprise. The only way to get the keyboard to work again is to unplug the keyboard and connect to a
different USB or rebooting the PC. This started after Windows 7 was installed. The keyboard works fine in XP. Any response is greatly appreciated.

Did another PC with Windows 7 also like this? try to do clean boot maybe affected by another software
try to remove LAN cable or another 3rd party HW to check
Did this keyboard using batteries, try to check the batteries, try to eliminate battery problems
check with phone support, "contact us" you can find the number at the bottom the link I provided if still not working

  • In Win 7 on Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000's quick-launch keys, Firefox & Thunderbird launch only in Taskbar, without opening program, then unfocused

Although these quick-launch keys on this keyboard worked fine on this computer when running Windows XP, when I switched to Windows 7 64-bit they started to have this problem, but only with Firefox & Thunderbird. And if I program these keys to open other programs, they don't have the problem. So it's some compatibility thing between Firefox/Thunderbird, Win7 64-bit, and this keyboard's software (latest version).
When I press one of the quick-launch keys on this keyboard programmed for Firefox/Thunderbird, they display a program rectangle in the Taskbar only, but no program opens on the screen. When I hover the mouse over this rectangle on the Taskbar, the program immediately opens, but out of focus.
I've also tried resetting Firefox, but that doesn't change the behavior at all.

The window that is focused is whatever the previous one opened was. If Firefox or Thunderbird are launched with no other windows open, nothing is focused.
After working with Microsoft's tech support on this problem over the phone, and replacing the keyboard driver & software with the one called Microsoft Mouse & Keyboard (both this and the one I had used are shown as the current drivers on Microsoft's 4000 Keyboard download page), nothing changed. Then I worked on the computer for a while, and the problem suddenly went away.
The only remaining problem is that Thunderbird doesn't search for mail right away when I open it. This is true regardless of how I open it (from the keyboard quick launch key, from the start menu, from a shortcut, etc.). Perhaps this is a totally different problem.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Ergonomic keyboard 4000 not working properly

    Hi all,
I have a very weird problem with my MS Ergonomic 4000 keyboard (USB) connected to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7.5). I've connected it in the past and it worked just fine but now, it's not functioning properly. I'm typing this on the MacBook keyboard, but here's what happens when I type the letter i using the ergonomic keyboard: i9
This is just from one tap of the letter i. It only happens with the lower-case i, and not with when typing a capital I (shift+i) This happens with other keys as well.
I searched the forums and support sites and so have since both removed intellitype and then installed intellitype 8.2 for the proper OS, but still no change.
Any help / advice will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Thanks Esquared,
I have the same problem in safe mode. I just tried it on my iMac and it does the same thing there. Also, when I press Shift + any key, a dialog pops up asking me to assign a function to a number key that I didn't press. The numlock key types "4" as well.
So I'm guessing that the issue is with the keyboard itself. The question is, can anything be done? It's relatively new and I'd hate to have to just throw it out.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000

Anyone using this keyboard with a MacBook Pro? Any compatibility problems?

i've had this keyboard for a good six months or so... brilliant keyboard.

try the 2.6.20 patch there, it *may* apply to 2.6.21. I'll give it a try now.
    http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Microsoft_ … board_4000
there's a how-to there, though it's slightly out dated, and some of it didnt work to me. importantly though, it mentions Li Yu's patches, which also add support for the extra keys. He sends updated patches to lkml frequently, and there's one there that should work on 2.6.21. you can find them here: http://search.gmane.org/?query=&author= … Ali+yu---A

Have you contacted MicroSoft about this? I presume that there are many PC keyboards that are not supported completely under Leopard.

  • Will Microsoft USB keyboards still work under Lion, including programmable buttons?

The MS Intellitype driver lists compatibility through 10.6.x. I don't want to upgrade, only to discover that my Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 is crippled by lack of driver support for all the shortuct buttons it has.

I heard back from Microsoft Hardware technical support, in a rather vague response:

    Hi Rochelle,
    Thank you for your reply.
Rochelle, IntelliType Pro software is compatible with Mac OS, however as the Lion OS is a latest OS; we do not have any driver for this and hence it is incompatible with the software. But please be assured that as soon as we have the driver, it will be uploaded on www.microsoft.com/hardware/downloads
i apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

  • Good ergonomic keyboard?

Can anyone recommend one that's Mac compatible? They seem hard to find -- or, in the case of Microsoft keyboards, they don't seem to have kept up with OSX. (The 4000 and 7000 keyboard specs say those work only for 10.1 through 10.3 or maybe 10.4.)

I have a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite from 2002(?) connected to my iMac and it works like a champ.
I like the shape and I like that it is a "white" keyboard with black letters as I look back and forth between the screen and the keyboard as I type.
I hate black keyboards with white letters as I can't read the letters when I move my eyes from the bright screen to the keyboard. So, I hate the new/latest MS keyboards.
It appears that MS still sells this keyboard. http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=022
I would look at Adesso keyboards: http://adesso.com/products.asp?categoryid=7&subcatid=56
Kensington and Logitech no longer seem to care about ergonomic keyboards.

  • Microsoft Sculpt keyboard + OS X issues

Hi all, I'm using the Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard with my 15" MacBook Pro Retina, and have a few weird problems:
[Shift]+[v] does not work.  Typing [v] prints a lower case v, and [Shift] uppercases all other letters just fine, but [Shift]+[v] is unresponsive, nothing is output.
Typing [r] with no modifiers refreshes web pages when it's not supposed to - any time the browser is in focus, and even when a <form input type=text...> is focused.  It does not refresh when a textarea is focused, though.
The keyboard is recognized by OS X as a standard 101 key ANSI keyboard.
Anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

I've recently started having issues with my Sculpt as well. Given that the keyboard has worked perfectly well for quite some time in my setup as have a number of other, non-Mac keyboards, it shouldn't be a mapping issue. Two potential trouble areas:
Wireless interference: the Sculpt operates on/around the 2.4 GhZ frequency, which is a crowded area of spectrum to begin with. However, USB 3.0 ports are also known to give off wireless interference which could be causing issues—try using a USB 2.0 extension cord to attach the Microsoft USB transceiver to either the MacBook itself or your USB hub.
Input device bug: this is entirely within the realm of speculation, but in the past week I've faced some serious system slowdowns and buggy interactions with all of my input devices (official bluetooth peripherals like the Magic Trackpad, USB mice, etc.). I'm investigating the issue but something may have cropped up with a recent update. I'll keep posting with any developments.
Another option might be to try PRAM/SMC resets; I've not had too much luck with that, but it's worth giving a shot.

  • Looking for a ergonomic keyboard for my iMac

I've used up (3) MS #4000 usb wired ergonomic keyboards since getting my Intel iMac 24".  I was a Mac to pc-user , but crossed back over in late 2006.  I had issues with the 4000 used with the pc and seem to use them up, getting only a year or so out of them before they go kaput.
Am looking for a wired or wireless model compatible with the iMac.  I just cannot get used to the regular keyboard again, I'm always hitting the wrong keys.  I hate to look down, rather look at the screen or other stuff; definitely not the keys.
    Any advice would be welcome.

Something here? These are all Mac compatible

  • Z68A-G43(g3) issues with the Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 6000

    Hello,
we've buils a new PC with the MSI Mainboard Z68A-G43(G3) and the PC hangs on the start with the code 92. We noticed that the issue is caused by some USB device. After many tests we found out that when the MicroSoft Wireless Keyboard 6000 v2 is connected to the computer, it stops to start.
The keyboard is connected through the Microsoft Wireless Desktop Receiver 3.1 to the USB, which is used to connect the mouse as well.
I'd like to use the kb + mouse set, how can I fix the issue.
Also, I tried to update BIOS via the Live Update, and it's not working, the BIOS download fails.
    Any help is welcome.
    Regards,
    Michal

    The BIOS is 4.10.
Also I forgot one note, the KB is working, but only when it's connected alone. When we connect to USB port another device (Flash Drive, USB Wireless, ...) the PC won't start. When the KB is removed, the PC starts without any problem.
Also another note, when the KB was connected and the Zyxel Wireless PCI adapter was connected, PC doesn't start, when KB is disconnected, PC starts.
So there seems to be some issue with the MS device.
    Regards,
    Michal

  • Ergonomic Keyboard Required

    Hi everyone.
I just became a Mac user yesterday and I have discovered that there are no reliable ergonomic keyboards for iMac except those sold by Microsoft. My hands are x-large (1.5in larger than the average male) and I'm a software engineer, so I NEED an ergonomic keyboard. I'm going to get one of the MS keyboards, but I've experienced their whimsy in the past (i.e., when they deliberately break their drivers for a competitor's OS). This puts me in a very precarious position. I'm not alone, a simple google search indicates that this has been an issue for many years. Here's an example of a particularly relevant article: http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/ask-engadget-best-ergonomic-keyboard-for-a-ma c/.
So, I think the community needs to get together and ask directly for mac to either design an alternative keyboard that is suitable for people with larger hands, or to strike some kind of deal with a company that specializes in this sort of thing. I do not want to be at the mercy of MS for long.
    ~Jason

I put this into the Apple feedback.  Maybe if there was a concerted effort by everybody, things might happen.  But we need thousands to let Apple know.
    ---->
Please, for the sake of all us Mac people be we desktop and/or mobile users, be aware that there is a desperate need for the Apple products to have the option of a true ergonomic keyboard similar to what Adesso used to offer with their Tru-Form line (but now backlit).
Take a look at your keyboards; small, compact, certainly NOT diverse and almost totally useless to those of us who suffer with any form of physical disability associated with their hands and/or wrists.  I cannot believe that Apple, which has continually demonstrated how important the human interface is with the product, still continually turns a blind eye to this area.  Apple is now big enough to make once again one like you did back in the 80's & '90's.  Please.
Thank you.  Apple since 1979 & **** proud of it.
