Setting Up & Mixing Sample Based Sequenced Drums in Logic

Hi All,
I have been a long time user of Propellerheads Reason and recently moved to using Logic Pro 8 for all my sequencing, processing & mixing needs. It has so much more power, options, plugins etc. I still intend on using Reason for a few of its synths however, but ultimately I want to sequence everything in Logic. One area i'm having difficulty replicating is setup up a framework for handling drums.
In Reason I have used the ReDrum step sequencer to program up my drum sequences using one-hit samples I have collected from various places. This works great for what I do, and ReDrum allows me to send each sample (such as kick, hats, snares, etc) to its own chain of processors and effects giving me total control over each individual drum sound.
Now that I plan on using Logic for all sequencing and effects/processing, i'm wondering what the best way is to go about replicating this setup in Logic. I want to be able to sequence the drums together using a step sequencer in Logic, so I need to know the best tool for the job for this, but I also want to be able to have individual control (ie EQ, reverb, compression, pan etc etc) over each drum sample.
Has anyone done this kind of thing before? Would really appreciate any comments.
If anyone is interested in fully understanding what I'm trying to do - here is the article that explains how its done in Reason:
http://www.musictechmag.co.uk/mtm/features/setting-up-and-mixing-drums-in-reason
Thanks.

I have been looking at Ultra beat - my question is if its possible to route each sample through its own mixer channel for full control of each sample? Essentially using Ultra beat as the sequencer - do you know what I mean? I havent yet been able to work this out - it may not be possible?

    I have been sampling new imported drum loops. And if I adjust region to song or time strecth it updates the audio file in the library. How to stop this? I lost the original setting to one loop. automatically doing it ??

    This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
    Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
    Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • Can I use RunState.ProcessModelClient.Data.Seq[0].Locals.MyVariable in batch model to set variables in a client sequence?

    I have used RunState.ProcessModelClient.Data.Seq["MainSequence"].Locals.MyVariable to set Locals variables in client sequences running in a sequential model but it doesn't seem to work with the batch model. Using a breakpoint I found that RunState.ProcessModelClient.Data.Seq is a container listing all of the sequences in the client sequence with the Main Sequence being index 0.
    I tried using RunState.ProcessModelClient.Data.Seq[0].Locals.MyVariable to set the variables in my client sequence and it worked fine.
    My question: is this method reliable or am I doing something that might cause problems down the road?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    A few issues from doing it this way-
    1- You should try an make your process model such that it can handle almost any sequence file thrown at it.  MainSequence may not a) contain that local variable and b) be at array element 0.  Unless you do some serious error checking then using your process model elsewhere will be a problem because it will throw errors.
    2- It all depends on where you are changing that variable at.  Remember with the Batch Model that you are dealing with multiple copies of your client sequence.  If you change a Locals in the process model which threads does it actually affect?
    3- Locals is to be used for the sole purpose of the sequence it resides in.  Just like in text based programming where you have a function call:
    MyFunc(int x, int y){
    string foo;
    foo is local and really shouldn't be changed outside of MyFunc.  x and y are parameters and should be how data is shared among different sequences in TestStand.  There are variables for bigger scopes as well (i.e. StationGlobals, FileGlobals).
    I recommend using either a StationGlobal or passing the data as a parameter.
    In the end you are the engineer and the flexibility that TestStand gives you makes it so you can do things however you want.

  • Setting Stereo Mix to default recording device on Windows 8 HP Envy Ultrabook Kills Speakers

    When I try setting Stero Mix to be my default recording device, the audio playback always cuts off after about 5-10 seconds or so. When it cuts off it doesn't sound good - it sounds like my speakers fry themselves to a quick and painful death if you can imagine that sound (ok, maybe i'm exagerrating).
    Sometimes I have to reboot in order to hear any audio again on this ultrabook. Other times the audio will come back on its own after some time (it may always comes back over time, but most times i'm impatient so I reboot).
    Is anyone else with my config able to set Stereo Mix to be the default recordgin and still retain a workable playback device? Anything else I can try?
    I have the HP Envy Ultrabook laptop with Windows 8 Pro 64 bit.
    Thanks,

    I have since discovered stereo mix works when the laptop is plugged in. If it's unplugged it still will not work even though the setting "continue using while on battery power" is checked in the properties. If this is by-design I suppose I can live with this.

  • Can you set a half-size (640x360) sequence in FCE?

    I have some older SWF ad units in my portfolio that cannot be converted to .mov files in Flash, so I'm forced to make video screen grabs of the sequences. They look nice and sharp at their original pixel dimensions of 336x280 pixels, but when grabbed and imported into an FCE sequence that is 1280x720 pixels, the clips look really soft like the pixels have been enlarged. (They look soft when viewed in QT straight from the screen grab as well.) I want to post them on Vimeo and they would never need to be seen at full screen, so I thought if I could author the FCP files at half size (640x360) and import the 336x280 screen grabs, they might not go soft on me. Is this possible? Is my hypothesis flawed in the first place?
    Thanks for your help!
    D

    FCE uses fixed sizes ONLY.
    Anything brought into FCE that is not the same dimensions as the pre-set Easy Setup (governs the Sequence settings) selected, will be conformed to that Sequence size, that means rendering.
    You could try Streamclip to convert your existing video to an FCE Easy Setup size.

  • Setting primary key fields from sequence. Please advise

    What is the most logical place to automatically set primary key fields from
    sequence?
    jdoPrestore seems to be a little late - my instance will not have id till
    it's committed. I can not do it in constructor because it gets called every
    time Kodo needs to construct an instance. What other options do I have for
    automatic pk assignment except do it in my code (hate it)?
    I wish I could use store managed OIDs but I need access to OID underlying
    data
    Please also see my previous message "Application Identity Extention"

    I came up with following pattern:
    public class OrgUnit implements InstanceCallbacks {
    private long orgUnitId = -1;
    private transient long tempOrgUnitId = -1;
    public long getOrgUnitId() {
    if (orgUnitId < 0) {
    if (tempOrgUnitId < 0) {
    tempOrgUnitId = JDOFactory.getNextSequenceId(getClass());
    return tempOrgUnitId;
    } else {
    return orgUnitId;
    public void jdoPreStore() {
    if (!JDOHelper.isDeleted(this)) {
    if (orgUnitId < 0) {
    setOrgUnitId(getOrgUnitId());
    I use -1 as an indicator that ID has not been assigned yet. If you use Long
    instead of long it will be cleaner since we can test for null

  • Set lookup field value based on another lookup field using Infopath 2010 rules

    Hello,
    I created 3 lists in SharePoint 2010: Lists A, B and C. The lists B and C where create to work as a drop-down fields in List A. My question: How to I set field C automatically based on what is selected on field B using Rules in Infopath 2010?
    I don't know what to put in the third field:

    I can't remember the password I set up for Certificate-based signatures. How do I request this password?

    The password is yours to keep and remember. Adobe do not have any backdoor to get it back -- because if there were a backdoor, hackers would use it.

  • Can I set an arbritrary sampling rate in Biobench (need 60/sec to sync to video)?

    Is there a way to set a sampling rate that is not in the drop-down menu in Biobench? Thanks!

    Hi George,
    BioBench comes with a set of predefined sampling rates. I encourage you to try using LabVIEW to trigger/sync your DAQ with video. The sample freq. in BB are std. for low freq. biomedical signals.
    Please let me know if you have any further questions.

  • Mixed Sample rates in STP

    Last night I was working on sweetening a video project and ran across a problem that certainly others must have encountered. I was wondering what others do in this situation.
    I sent a FCP project to STP that had some library music in it. It was a 48K file with some 44.1 music in it. FCP resamples on the fly so the mixed rates was never a problem in FCP.
    And when sent to STP, the program played back fine (not sure why) during the sweeten and the mixed sample rates was NOT a problem UNTIL I "sent" it back to FCP. Then the music was "pitched up". Just a bit faster and few seconds shorter (an obvios resample error)
    I can send the mix back without the music and do the final mix in FCP, but I wonder if I'm missing something. Looking for a more elegant solution.
    Thanks for the suggestions.
    David

    Forget about mixing rates in STP2 anymore. It's a no-brainer for a professional audio software, yet STP2 manages to completely bork it.

  • Auto-set Conditional Build Tags Based On Style?

    Is there a way to auto-set conditional build tags based on style?
    I want to be able to import a Word document into RoboHelp and have it recognize certain styles as requiring certain conditional tags. For example, an imported Word document might have a style called WD_Internal and any text with that style would automatically have a conditional build tag assigned to it. The idea is to allow my SMEs to indicate which text is intended for internal audiences and which text is OK for customer consumption in a single central Word document using styles. When the content is correct, I'd import it into RoboHelp, have RoboHelp assign conditional build tags, then generate multiple printed versions of the document (an internal version and a public consumption version).
    Setting conditional build tags is pretty easy, but it will still be a lot of work to manually set them. Is there a way to do this automatically?
    I am using RoboHelp HTML RH9.

    Hi,
    There's no way to do this through the interface. You can however create a script to do this for you. Cycle through the content of the topics and insert the code for the CBT.

  • Can't make Logic 8 Slave for Motif XS Sequencer like in Logic 7

    Hi All,
    I have an issue where I can't make Logic's Sequencer slave for my Motif XS' sequencer for midi data for logic's instruments (or other plugin instruments) or for recording audio from motif xs in time with sequencer.
    In Logic 7 I could make logic slave to MTC and set my Motif's sequencer as the master, synced internal. Then logic's sequencer timing would line up with my motif when recording audio or midi from it. I could hit record on logic and it would wait for me to hit play on the Motif and then it would record in sync what i have in the motif.
    Now, in Logic 8, i hit record in Logic and it just starts on its own, and it does not respond to me pressing the buttons on the motif to play, or stop or go back or forward a measure. So it's basically not working at all for my purposes. Please advise as to what has to be done in Logic 8 to get my motif xs as master and logic as slave. Thanks.

    did Yamaha/Apogee ever work out the problem that you couldn't use mLAN drivers for the XS (it's not really mLAN, it's "based on" right?) and Apogee drivers at the same time?
    I think Yamaha has updated their drivers twice since you and I last exchanged ideas on this.
    You've got killer hardware, and while I'm sure it's possible to set up an XS to send MTC and for Logic 8 to deal with correctly, it's just backwards of the way I use (almost) the same tools. My experience is the same, control Logic from the Motif, only it's so much more than just stop/start, and locate. Your XS is made to be a remote controller for Logic, sliders, transport controls, even the info for tracks and plug-ins (in Logic!) show up on your XS display and you can do plenty without touching the keyboard or mouse... Besides the sound of the Motifs, they're just great at doing this kind of stuff too... I personally wouldn't consider anything else...
    I don't want to send you down a path that won't work if the two vendors in question haven't solved this yet, but... I want to help you but deep inside I think you're approaching your top-of-the-line gear backwards...
    of course, if this is still a vendor incompatibility thing... then you have no choice.
    pages 839 (the graphic is on page 838) of the Logic user manual under "listen to MMC input" describes what you need to set in Logic 8 to make this work. Since I don't have an XS, I can't point you to the correct pages for that.
    I really hope you can get this to work.
    Michael

  • How to record V-Drums in Logic Express?

    I’m trying to record my V-Drums through the M-Audio 2626 interface into Logic Express. I’m able to trigger sounds in the Logic Express library when I conned the MIDI-out on the V-drums to the M-Audio.
    But I’d like to record the Roland drum sounds through Logic. Has anyone had success with this?
    I tried connecting the audio out from the V-drums into channel 1 on the M-Audio with a 1/4-inch instrument cable. I can hear the drum kit through the M-Audio via the headphone jack, but not through Logic Express.
    If anyone has successfully recorded Roland V-drums in Logic, any information would be helpful.
    Many thanks,

    Hi,
    you're on the right way. You have to create an audio track in Logic (one for each output of the drums or simply a stereo track for the drum's stereo output - depending on your configuration).
    1. Select the appropriate channel of your M-Audio as the audio track's input
    2. Click the little red "R" to arm this track for recording or press the littel "I" to activate input monitoring for rehearsal.
    3. Start recording and there you are.
    4. Don't forget: Have fun!
