Setting up multiple speakers w/ Airport 802.11g/n

Hello..
I updated my Airport Express to the 802.11g/n model over the holidays and has set up a pair of wireless speakers via Airtunes.
I kept the older (pre 802.11g/n) AE as I was told that I could still hook up speakers to it via Airtunes.
So here is where I got stumped while setting the 2nd set speakers. I plug my older AE into the wall and the audio cable (from the 2nd set of speakers)
into the AE audio in port.
How do I get the wireless signal from the newer AE to read the older AE (where the 2nd set of speakers are plugged into) to channel music into a different
area of the home? I have a large studio size apt. with minimal interference.
Do I need to have another DSL line to run into the older AE so I can get the wireless signal to work for the 2nd set of speakers?
For some reason, I'm thinking this isn't necessary since I already have a wireless signal coming from the newer AE.
Any ideas as to what I may be missing here?
thanks as always in advance!  ~A~

Yes.

Yes. To administer your original Express, use AirPort Utility 5.6. It is compatible with Lion as well as Mountain Lion, however, the installer app will refuse to install it on Mountain Lion.
This dilemma is easily solved though. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist.
Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Mountain Lion will not allow you to delete its existing version of AirPort Utility. Just ignore it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist.
Note: For those with Leopard or Snow Leopard systems you need AirPort Utility 5.6.1 (this is confusing - a later AirPort Utility version for an earlier OS X version - but it is correct).
Download AirPort Utility 5.6.1 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1536

  • How to set up multiple speakers

I am connected to my stereo via AP Express. I would like to have the music streaming to those speakers and at the same time coming thru on my computer speakers. On the drop down menu at bottom of itunes I only get to choose one or the other - no provision for selecting both. There is no choice for 'multiple speakers'. Any ideas.

All I remember is that I had to update the firmware of the Airport Express in order to get it to work. It was a change in the AirTunes part of the Airport Express.
You don't need to do anything with the Airport Extreme card. In fact you can use it over ethernet and not wireless. That's how we have it set up at work.
I can remember the firmware version required was released over a year ago. I have no idea if there is any information about it. Anyway, just update it to the latest.

  • AirPort 802.11g range

    Greetings.
I'm setting up a Mac mini as the hub of a home theater system and the fact that it will be on a wireless network is important.
We're going to be using the latest Airport which is 802.11n but the mini only has g. The furthest machine is going to be 70 feet away - and it needs to be reliably on the network.
Can anyone speak to whether this is realistic? I know it is probably on the fringes.

I think that you should be okay. Seventy feet isn't that far as long as you don't have a lot of metal and concrete and you run at 2.4GHz not 5. Speed should be pretty good since you are not adding an Airport Extreme as part of a WDS. Just remember because you are using an 802.11n Extreme with equipment that is at best 802.11g, you cannot exceed either range or speed of anything better than 802.11g.
Also, your download speed is limited to the speed of your internet provider.
Also, if you are going to add an Apple TV, syncing the Apple TV with iTunes via a wireless system is very slow. If you do add an Apple TV, you would be best connecting it to the mini via ethernet.
Apple TV has its own discussion form which is very informative.

  • Problems setting up remote speakers with Airport Express

I have an airport express hooked up with powered speakers via a mini pin stereo connector/rca connectors. I have checked "Enable Airplay" in the Airport Utility configuration for this AE, which is my ONLY wifi device and functions as my router as well.  In iTunes, there is NO speaker selection tab on the bottom right of the iTunes window.  I am using iTunes 10, latest version, and the Airport Utility software is up to date. The base station is an 802.11g. I believe I have tried everything. Correct answer anyone?

Temporarily, try plugging a pair of headphones into the audio jack on the Express to simulate speakers.
    Restart the entire network.
Same error message when you try this?

  • Apple TV and multiple speakers on Airport express

    Hi,
I'm using Apple TV3 and 10.8.3 Mac with Itunes 11 and would like the flim audio to play on multiple (3) airport express' with speakers attached around the room all on same Wifi.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks

As my english isn't too good I made a screenshot to show you what I mean.
As you can see in the image below iTunes only shows me the computer speakers and the AirPort Express. But at the bottom you can see that iTunes actually recognized 3 different speaker (Mac, AirPort, Apple TV 2). Why does the Apple TV not show up in the multiple speakers window? Any ideas?

  • Multiple Speakers with Airport Express

Since the release of iTunes sometime back in feb/mar, I'm so happy to be able to stream music through multiple speakers in different rooms in my house. However, since I installed the latest iTunesSetup dated 2006-06-28 release v6.05, I am unable to play to more than 1 set of speakers, sometimes even only limited to "My Computer". The error message was something like 'could not access the speaker'.
I've also doublechecked latest firmware and there was none released after http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportexpressfirmwareupdate63forwindows. html
I don't see anyone here with similar problems since there seems to be none posted after Jun 28 on this issue.
    Can any expert help?

    # Click the Firewall tab.
    # Click the Advanced button.
    # Make sure that the option to "Block UDP Traffic" is not selected.
Thks so much for the reply! My PCs are behind the router and the firewall is not on in this case. I do use the zonealarm normally for other PCs.
As far as I know, on XPProSP2 we can unblock UDP traffic and normally need to specify which ports though, not universal unblock.
    Any other clues?

  • Multiple speakers for airport express

I'm trying to connect multiple speakers from my Itunes but I can't get it to work. I can get one or the other to work but I can't get both to work at the same time. I updated the software for A-express, still doesn't seem to work. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution?
    thanks

    Hi
I have been having the same problem since I purchased an Airport Express. You can select one or the other speakers, but an error message comes up if you try and select both.
It is rather more annoying given that I have 'remote' on my iPod Touch which completely locks up if you try and change the speakers.
I have had no luck getting Apple to understand the issue - despite several emails and phone conversations with support. Ultimately I consider it to be a software development issue.
Hopefully they are reading these posts!!

  • Multiple Speakers on Airport Express

    Hi everyone
I have recently purchased a second Airport Express so I can now stream my music to 2 different locations in my apartment. In iTunes I now have the option of streaming to Multiple Speakers. When I try to select this option only one of my Airport Express Stations will allow multple speakers to be played. I get the errors message
"....The current remote speaker Paul's Lounge does not support playback as part of a group..."
Is this due to the fact that the Airport Express is slightly olders - I didn't know there was an update to the cababilities of this model. Or can this be remedied with a firmware update of some kind.
I hope someone can help as I'd love to have music playing in my Lounge and Bedroom simultaneously.
    Many thanks
    Paul

Hello Paullyk. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

To support multiple speakers, the AX must be running v6.3+ firmware & iTunes v6.0.2+.

  • How to set up iHM79 speakers with airport express?

I've got the green light on the express.. i can see it fine in airport utility. I've told iTunes to play thru the express. But the express does not seem to realize it has speakers attached to it. All i did was plug the speakers into teh express. I notice that in airport utility, it wants to know the name of the speakers. Well, near as i can tell, the speakers don't have a name, and there are very few directions that came with them, so i am lost.
How do i tell the express that it's got speakers attached so that i can play music thru them wirelessly?

You can use AirPort Utility (in the Music panel) to give the speakers a name. That can be useful if you have more than one set of speakers attached to separate AirPort Express units so that you can distinguish between them in iTunes.
I can't find a way to name the speakers.. it just asks me what the name of the speakers i want to use is.
How do i tell the express that it's got speakers attached so that i can play music thru them wirelessly?
Can you see the speakers in iTunes? One thing you may have forgotten to do is to check "Enable AirTunes" in that same Music panel of AirPort Utility.
I had that done, but it didn't matter. I could see the express in iTunes, but not the speakers specifically.
However, i have gotten it all to work by starting over. I ran across a tutorial here, telling me to plug the speakers into the express and THEN plugging the express into the wall, and then setting the express up with airport utility. So i restored it to default factory settings at that point and started from scratch. Voila! I still don't see names for the speakers, but they play music, so i'm not arguing.
Now I've left my daughter to figure out where to find the app for her iPod Touch to remotely control things.

  • How to connect to multiple speakers using Airport Express

Hi -- I have two AP Express modules setup and working in my household. I have no problems using either from my iBook G4.
How do I use them both at the same time? I cannot find an appropriate way to set this up?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Since you are at 10.4.7, I'm assuming iTunes is at least 6.0.2. If not, upgrade the app via Software Update or Apple's iTunes site to the latest v 6.0.5.
Since both units work individually, I'd say the problem lies in how the 2 units are configured. Are you using the latest 6.3 firmware for Airport express? To determine your version, download the firmware, select install. The ensuing panel will tell you the latest version for your units. Upgrade if you are using an earlier version of the firmware.
    Post back with results.

  • Multiple Speakers w/Airport Express

I upgraded from OS 10.4.7 to OS 10.4.9 and now cannot stream airtunes to remote speakers AND internal speakers at the same time. Before the upgrade it worked fine. I'm using iTunes 6.05 (don't like version 7). Anyone seen this? How to fix?

SCTS, thankyou so much. I had the same problem and figured it was somehing to do with the firewall but not being that technical I could go no further. Its funny how the simple things can be so frustrating! Cheers Ian

  • Airport 802.11g and WIFI issues with Apple bluetooth keyboard

Hey guys, this thing start to drive me crazy, I bought a Apple BT keyboard but just recently I started to having problems with my wifi connection and apparently I think this is due to the BT keys.
I started to notice this issue when I moving with the laptop in another room where usually I had maximum Airport signal, now it's happening that the signal start to lose power and when is just to the minimum, internet or other net staff don't work anymore and after 5 minutes of this apparently "freeze" wifi status, the airport loose definitely the signal.
After that I need to turn off the Airport card, most of the time work but sometimes i need to turn off two times to get it works.
After I read different blogs and forum, I tried to change channel, use the interference robustness, anything, and at the ending I reinstalled Leo, still have this problem, so I started to turn off the bluetooth connection and it look's like when the signal start to lose power the network keep working, and than reprise the maximum power.
So I can really fix this issue or is another "well done" by Apple? It look's like the Apple industry getting so close to the trash world! I'm sorry for these last words but my disappointed in Apple getting bigger.
    Thank you for anyone helps.
P.S. a friend of mine with a Macbook Pro, Snow Leopard and my same Airport Base station have the same issue.

GuyI just fixed for now the problem turning off the bluetooth keyboard when I have wifi issues, it's the only solutions!

  • Airport Express 802.11g cannot connect with OS X 10.8.3

Hi just updated my MacBook Pro to OS X to 10.8.3.  I have an older model Airport Express (802.11g) that I have been able use to set up wireless speakers via Airport Utility 5.6 and 5.6.1.  However, this most recent Mountain Lion update has rendered my Airport Express useless.  I have to restart Airport Express each time I want to try to use it, to which Airport Utility will find the device and successfully add it to my existing wifi to allow me to play music wirelessly through my speakers. The second I close my MacBook, though, everything disconnects and Airport Utility is no longer able to find my device.  The green light is steady on the Airport Express, so I know that is hooked up and working correctly.  Is there a fix for this....?  Thank you!

See if setting a static IP will correct the problem.  Step 5 in the document below will walk you through the steps.  Let me know what happens.

  • ITunes can't connect to remote speakers PLUS Airport Express p/word problem

I am running iTunes 7.4.1 and have previously been able to play iTunes through remote speakers via an Airport Express . After upgrading iTunes some time ago, I am unable to connect to the AE any more. The AE shows as an option in my iTunes window, but when I select it from the drop down option box bottom right, it just doesn't choose it.
I have read other discussions pertaining to this, and have followed all of those solutions, but to no avail.
I have done a hard reset on the AE restoring it's factory settings thinking I should just start again, and it has been renamed "Base Station Oa369f" so I know this has worked, but when I try to reconfigure it through Airport Utility, it asks for a password. I tried it's old password, and also tried the generic one "public" as stated in the AE setup guide, but it rejects both.
I am keen to figure this out as I'm about to buy a new printer and another AE so I can print wirelessly, but don't want to have the same issues if it's an AE bug that can't be fixed, I would be left with no printer!
I know this is two quite separate problems, but if anyone has any ideas for either I would be really grateful.
    Thanks very much

I have exactly the same problem which has been driving me nuts for the last couple of days. However I am able to access the dropdown list of speakers. I have mine set to multiple speakers, and now it WILL play through my Airport Express again, but only when playing through the internal speakers at the same time. When I try to play solely through the Airport Express it just hangs.
Come on Apple, you need to be regression testing your upgrades far better than this, for something so basic to go wrong.

  • Connecting AX (802.11n) and AX (802.11g) to create WDS

Hello I'm currently trying to connect my new Airport Extreme (802.11n) to my old Airport (802.11g)
in the aim of extending my network. So I would like to have the 11n as my main.
    and 11g as a remote I think?
can anybody give me a step by step on how I would go about this on Airport Utility?
I think my main problem is that my old Airport is connected to a different network.
    Kyle

You would need to configure the 802.11n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to operate in an 802.11g compatible mode. You would need to configure one AEBS to operate as a WDS main. You would need to configure the other AEBS to operate as a WDS remote (or relay). An Unfortunate side effect of WDS is that each link cuts your available wireless bandwidth in half. Therefore the maximum wireless bandwidth achievable is 1/2 the 802.11g rate.
