Setting up new computer with existing library

Just got a new computer with Vista. Have current iTunes library on an external HD. (old computer running XP) Can I just plug the HD in and have all my playlists and settings? Or could someone point me where to find info to set this up? We've got 3 iPods running on this library and am hoping this is easy.

See this recent discussion where I think I cover everything that may also apply to your situation as well. Post back with any questions...

  • Cannot sync ipod with itunes after setting up new computer with newest version of itunes

Cannot sync ipod with itunes after setting up on new computer, only songs which tansferred were songs bought on new computer after set up, tried to sync songs and it deleted old songs from ipod.  How can I get them back on ipod??  They are showing in music library on itunes still.

If the iPod database gets corrupted, it will add files to "Other" instead of where they really belong.
Restoring the iPod will erase this database and recreate it.
And if I do this, won't I just have the same issue when my iPod is re-updated to the most recent version again?
No, it shouldn't. This is why you Restore the iPod. It erases the corrupt database.

  • Aperture vaults - setting up new computer with vault

    Hi there.
I have a MacBook with a large aperture vault on a separate hard drive. I have now bought a new iMac. Can I use the vault from my Macbook to set up all my photos on my new machine, thereby saving me hours of work. HELP
    Di from Devon

Yes, you can restore Aperture to another Mac from a Vault. Just do not expect it to be quick.
    -Allen Wicks
    From the manual:
    Restoring Your Aperture System
If you buy a new computer or use another system at a different location and want
access to the Aperture library, you can install Aperture and then transfer the library
from your vault (on your backup disk) to the other computer. If you experience
equipment failure or other unexpected events, such as fire or weather-related damage
to your equipment, you can easily restore the entire library to your new computer from
    a backup disk.
To restore the entire library from an external backup disk:
1 Connect the hard disk drive that contains the most up-to-date vault to your computer
    and open Aperture.
2 Choose File > Vault > Restore Library.
    The Restore Library dialog appears.
3 Choose Select Source Vault from the Source Vault pop-up menu.
4 Navigate to the vault from which you want to restore, then click Select.
5 Choose Select Destination from the Library Destination pop-up menu.
6 Navigate to the location where you want to place the library, then click Select.
7 Click Restore, then click Restore again.

  • Sync iPod to a new computer with matched library

I have a large music library on my home desktop computer which I sync to a 160GB iPod Classic, and thorugh iTunes Match, to my work laptop and my iPhone.  I'm traveling over the holidays with my iPod and my laptop, and got some new CDs (thanks, Santa!) that I want to get onto my iPod.  My plan was to import the tracks to the iTunes library on my laptop, and then sync my iPod to the library on the laptop.  Technically, it's the same library as what's on my desktop, but obviously very few of the actual files from my music library are locally stored on my harddrive.  However, since my last sync to the desktop computer was very recent, the only new content that needs to be synched is the new stuff that's actually locally on the laptop, so my hope is that the general lack of physical music files on the laptop shouldn't matter.
When I plug the iPod to the computer, iTunes recognizes it and shows me all the content.  It doesn't complain that it's synched to a diferent library, but clicking the Sync button does nothing.
Is iTunes more or less trying to protect me from the possibility of having to download a crap-ton of music from iCloud (even though it wouldn't need to in my particular case), rendering my desired operation impossible, or am I missing something?  Should I be able to accomplish what I'm trying to do?  Or does iTunes only alow synching with the library from the 'primary' computer?
    Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    /Tom

Right after I submitted my question, I think I figured it out.
First, none of the "Sync" checkboxes were selected: for music, for movies, nothing.  When I checked the Synch Music button, it prompted me whether I wanted to erase whatever was currently on my iPod and replace it with what was in this library.  In my thinking, they should be the 'same' library.  But I realize now that they aren't.  I have a bunch of stuff on my library at home that's lossless or otherwise higher bitrate than 256k.  Even though I've downsampled to 256 on my iPod, the content on my home library and the content available to my laptop's library are in fact decidedly diferent content.  Also, many of my very long tracks, and any of my spoken word content that's sampled at a low bitrate aren't even visible to my laptop.
So, the only option relaly is to replace the iPod's library with the laptop's content.  I'm not even sure what that would do.  I suppose in attempting to put its library on the iPod it would download all the files from the cloud and then sync.  That's 127GB of dwonloading, so... no thanks.
Am I right in interpreting the issue, or does someone with more familiarity with this technology have a different take on the issue and whehter there's a way to accomplish what I'm looking to do here?

  • Old Computer Died. Set up new computer with old WRT54G

    Hi,
what is the easiest / best way to get up and running with my new computer(The old one died). The old WRT54 router is working fine and is up and running as always.
Do i need to change the router settings or install any software on the new machine?
Also earlier the router was configured with WEP security. If I were to upgrade to WPA, what would i need to do.
    thanks much,
    Sam.

    hi sam,
if the router is up and running, no need for you to reinstall or reconfigure the router. As long as you can go online when new pc is connected to it, no worries...it will work fine...If you want to change the encryption from wep to wpa, just go to the website, www.linksys.com/kb and search for the answer id 2651...

  • Unable to set up sync on new computer with existing iPhone

I have replaced my laptop and install Firefox 16.0.2. I have been unable to sync it with my existing iPhone Firefox app. It was working fine on my old computer, both running Windows 7. For my last attempt I logged onto my sync account and deleted it. Now trying to set up a new sync account and it says my email address is already in use. When I launch the Firefox app on my iPhone it goes direct to a screen that Firefox Home requires a sync account. I have deleted and re-installed the app but that did not help. I'm stumped.

Addendum: I tried all of the suggestions on the Firefox web site, but they do not match the options available on 16. There is not "Manage Account" option that I can find on 16.

  • Setting up new computer - duplicates in library

I just got a new HP computer, running Vista, so I needed to transfer my music. Here's my problem. I used my iPod and the Transfer Purchases from iPod option under the File menu to copy songs into my new library. But, (user error) this was done twice, so now I have duplicates of almost 500 songs, so deleting manually is not a good choice. In addition, there were about 40 new songs in the new library, so they weren't on the iPod that was synced on the old computer, so I can't really delete everything and start again, without somehow preserving these new songs first. Any ideas?

Have a look at Teridon's iTunes Scripts there's a script in there for dealing with duplicates: Teridon's iTunes for Windows Scripts

  • Hooking up new computer with existing Verizon DSL

Will I simply be able to hook everything up on my new PC as on my existing PC and I'm good to go? Will I need to run my Verizon DSL set-up CD (which I'm not sure I have)? Will my home wireless network (2 laptops) be affected? Thanks, everyone.

Not a problem Let us know if you need anything else.

If you have given correct info about you ios 6.1.3 - all you need to do is delete account. You will be able to sign in with new one afterwards. Make sure you don't delete any info when you see those prompts.

  • HT5577 When I bought a new computer with Windows8.1, iTunes wouldn't accept my old ID and password, so I set up a new ID and password.  Now I can't locate or sync my old library of music onto my iPOD.  Any ideas?

when I bought a new computer with Windows8.1, iTunes wouldn't accept my old ID and password.  After entering a new ID and password I got in, but now I can't sync the music that was in my original library.  When I try to sync a message says that music will be removed from "other" libraries, so I know they're out there somewhere.  Just can't get to them.  Any ideas?

    - Is the computer authorized for the iTunes account(s) used on the iPod?
    - Are you syncing or manually managing music?
    - In iTunes if you go to Preferences and then go to the Devices tab, what date is show for the iPod backup? Is if before you switched computers?
    - Your iPod sees the new computer as a new library/computer and you can only sync to one library.  You need to restore you iPod from a backup.  If that bacup is hosw in Preferences, restore from that backup.
    - If the backup is after you switched computers, you have two options:
--- Try to make a backup by right clicking on the iPd under Devices in iTunes and selecting backup.
--- If you can't make a backu, can you get one from the backup of your old computer.  It is located here and yu may have to have show hidden files turned on.

Will my whole itunes library be transferred to my new computer with home sharing,in other words will I be able to use bothe computers at the same time ? And will I have two copies of my all my playlists?

    Hi there J1750oe,
You may find the information in the article below helpful.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
    Transferring playlists
If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop.
Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File > Library > Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing.

  • I have downloaded the most recent itunes on my new computer with windows 8        but a message pops up saying "the itunes library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this file. How do I fix?

I have downloaded the most recent itunes on my new computer with windows 8 but when I attempt to get in I get this message "The itunes library.itl file is locked, ona locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."  How do i fix this?

    Repair iTunes Security Permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Securitytab and click Advanced. Use the Change Permissions... button grant to your account (or the Users group) and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to Replace permissions entries... which will repair permissions throughout the library. When complete switch to the General tab, click in the Read-only check box to clear it, then click Apply.
If you don't have the option to change the permissions then use the Owner tab and Edit... button to take ownership from an account with administrator privileges. Tick the option to Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.
Repeat with the media folder if it isn't stored inside the main iTunes folder.
If you've brought over the library from another computer you may also want to remove any "mystery" identities (S<string of dashes & digts>) that have come over from the old computer...
The images above are from Windows 7. Hopefully the system isn't too different in Windows 8.

  • Trouble with Yahoo Mail in setting up new computer

    Hi.
I'm having this issue getting a new Mac set up with a Yahoo account. I already have another machine set up with a yahoo account in the Mail app working just fine. Then, I'm setting up a new laptop and I used Mobile Me to sync the new computer with the old computer's Mail accounts. One of them is a Yahoo account. When, after a long time setting up, the new machine can only get Yahoo mail up to a certain date. Any new mails will not be downloaded to the new machine. I can't figure out how to get these newer messages onto the new machine. I have Yahoo set to keep all messages. This is the first time I've had this issue. I'm afraid to delete the account on the new machine for fear of Mobile Me syncing to the older machine and deleting the account on it.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Antonio

Since a Yahoo account can be created and accessed as a POP account only with the Mail.app on your Mac, it shouldn't matter if you delete and manually recreate the account with the Mail.app on your new Mac. This will not affect all received messages that remain on the server even if the account is deleted with the Mail.app on your other Mac, which I don't beleive it will. You can temporarily disable syncing with your MobileMe account on the other Mac before deleting and manually recreating the account with the Mail.app on your new Mac and then re-enable syncing with MobileMe on the other Mac after doing so.
