Setting Up New Computer

I have just taken my new iMac out of the box and am beginning to get it set up. I would like to do it right the first time, so would welcome any advice. I find that I have a couple of days to plan and prepare as I was surprised to learn that my (old) 6 pin Firewire is incompatible with my new machine. I have ordered a 9 pin adapter so that my Firewire will connect.
My old machine is an iMac G4 with OSX10.4.11. I have had it since it was Apple's best iMac. It is getting long in the tooth, but still runs fine. I have a lot of documents written in Applework 6 and the version of Microsoft Word, spread sheets prepared in Microsoft Excel. I use Quicken 5 to track financial information. And AOL software to be able to connect to America on Line for e-mail. I would like to move everything from my old machine to the new, but don't want to do anything dumb in the process.
I am familiar with making the transfer from hard drive to hard drive with the Firewire connection. But a couple of questions: When I transfer the hard drive information from the G4 to the new machine will all of the applications go as well such that everything will work on the new machine just as it did on the old? Or in the case of Quicken, for example, must I first go back and install the basic program from the Quicken software disk? Will my AOL software transfer to the new machine such that I only need click the desktop icon to do what I have always done with AOL? Or must I download the AOL installation program and reinstall? I bought the latest version of Microsoft Office to install on my new machine. Should that be installed before? or after? transferring files made up with the older version of Microsoft Office that I got when I got my G4?
And a question about Internet Explorer: I have had IE for Mac on my G4. I haven't used it much lately since it doesn't seem to work as good on my G4 as Safari or Firefox. I know that IE for Mac is now long out of date and no longer even supported by Microsoft, but it is still available. Is it worthwhile/advisable to transfer ..... or download ...... IE for Mac? Is this new iMac and/or OSX 10.6.5 able to use any other version of IE? If so which?

Yes the new firewire requires more pins; but it's also faster. And at least you can get an adapter to use the old firewire. Even if it wasn't you could still use ethernet.
I've had mix successes migrating IE. I would suggest before migrating your information to the new computer; to open IE and export your bookmarks as an HTML file. that way after migration you can import the bookmarks into safari or firefox.
after migration, if IE dose not open, you could also install parallels with windows to run IE inside inside of windows. BUT there really no reason to go through all this added work if safari or fire fox works fine.
If you use migration assistant; witch is on your old computer and new computer. Migration assistant will offer to move your user applications, documents, user accounts, and other files over to the new computer. When you boot the new computer for the first time it will offer to transfer your information from another mac.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3322 outlines the processes. If you look at ht3322 you will see at the bottom there is a link to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1963 witch basically says some programs migrated will not work.
AOL, your better off downloading and installing the latest version. If you need AOL to connect to the internet. I would suggest downloading the installer on the old computer. so when you use migration assistant it's there; and ready to go on the new computer.
Office, you can install after using migration assistant. Just remember to do it.
You might want to consider getting iWorks. iWork opens allot of the old applework's document. I apple works seems to seems to work fine for me after migration, but some of my friends it didn't work. Even if applework works, long term you should really consider porting those documents to iworks or office. That way you can continue to opening the documents for many years to come.
I don't know if quicken 5 will work. Even if it dose; you might want to upgrade quicken. Some times the longer you wait to upgrade; the harder it becomes to upgrade.
If you look at, http://quicken.intuit.com/support/articles/getting-started/upgrading-and-convers ion/7629.html , the document outlines upgrading quicken to the latest version. Basically it says you make a copy of the data file for quicken, and then run the migration program of the copy of the file. The document doesn't not say if there are any versions of quicken that the upgrade program can not upgrade.
Or you may want to consider ibank.
I hope that helps; and con-grads on the new computer.

  • Setting up new computer, eliminating Parallels and VM

My late 2007 MacBook pro (OS X 10.5.8) has a virtual WIndows XP machine using Parallels.  It came with iLife software and is backed up to an external hard drive using Time Machine.   It’s losing some functionality (optical drive, keyboard) so I bought a new-to-me Macbook pro (mid-2009 model, with OS X 10.8.2) which has additional software I would like to keep.  I’ve decided that I don’t need XP on the new MacBook Pro, so want to eliminate that when data is transferred.
If I use Time Machine to set up the new computer, I suspect that it will automatically partition the hard drive and give me Parallels and XP.  I also suspect that it will write over everything on the new machine and I’ll lose access to the new software programs (Word for Windows, etc.) that came with it.
So... How do I retain all the new software that came with the 2009 MacBook Pro, while transferring everything EXCEPT Parallels and XP from the 2007 MacBook Pro  - including  iLife which came installed on the 2007 MacBook Pro?

Thanks for clarifying about partitions, and Parallels as a disc image.  Very helpful.  Uninstalling Parallels should do the trick.
If I migrate the old machine to the new one, that should bring my iLife along.  But will it replace the OS X 10.8.2 with the older OS X 10.5.8?  Will it eliminate the new software currently on the new machine?
Alternatively, could I "migrate" and merge the TM contents of two different hard drives onto the new machine?  One thought I have is to buy a new, larger HDD, install it in the new machine.  Then migrate elements from each of the old hard drives: From the new machine migrate OS X 10.8.2 and the new software, and from the old machine migrate the iLife software and all my files, email, etc.  Is that possible?  If so, how to do partial migrations?

  • Trouble with Yahoo Mail in setting up new computer

    Hi.
I'm having this issue getting a new Mac set up with a Yahoo account. I already have another machine set up with a yahoo account in the Mail app working just fine. Then, I'm setting up a new laptop and I used Mobile Me to sync the new computer with the old computer's Mail accounts. One of them is a Yahoo account. When, after a long time setting up, the new machine can only get Yahoo mail up to a certain date. Any new mails will not be downloaded to the new machine. I can't figure out how to get these newer messages onto the new machine. I have Yahoo set to keep all messages. This is the first time I've had this issue. I'm afraid to delete the account on the new machine for fear of Mobile Me syncing to the older machine and deleting the account on it.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Antonio

Since a Yahoo account can be created and accessed as a POP account only with the Mail.app on your Mac, it shouldn't matter if you delete and manually recreate the account with the Mail.app on your new Mac. This will not affect all received messages that remain on the server even if the account is deleted with the Mail.app on your other Mac, which I don't beleive it will. You can temporarily disable syncing with your MobileMe account on the other Mac before deleting and manually recreating the account with the Mail.app on your new Mac and then re-enable syncing with MobileMe on the other Mac after doing so.

  • Mac Mail corrupt?--setting up new computer, problems...

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I set up my new Macbook Pro Retina using Migration Assistant to get my data and settings from my old computer and the strangest thing is happening with the Mail App on the new computer. I am signed into iCloud on my new computer and everything works except the Mail App. In system preferences, iCloud shows signed in and Mail is checked. When I click on the Mail icon, Mail opens and the set up a new account dialogue window jumps up and requests that I pick an email account type to set up (ie. iCloud, Yahoo, AOL, etc.) It does not recognize that I am already signed into iCloud and have Mail checked in iCloud system prefs. If I click Cancel in the dialogue box, the Mail App quits so I can't get into mail prefs. If I try to pick iCloud, it asks for my iCloud Apple ID and password and then it does nothing and Mail freezes. The strange thing is that I can see behind the dialogue box and I can see the Mail favorites bar and my iCloud personalized mail folders with their proper names are there. How do I fix this issue? Do I throw away a pref file or something? Open to any advice, thanks.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Cannot sync ipod with itunes after setting up new computer with newest version of itunes

Cannot sync ipod with itunes after setting up on new computer, only songs which tansferred were songs bought on new computer after set up, tried to sync songs and it deleted old songs from ipod.  How can I get them back on ipod??  They are showing in music library on itunes still.

If the iPod database gets corrupted, it will add files to "Other" instead of where they really belong.
Restoring the iPod will erase this database and recreate it.
And if I do this, won't I just have the same issue when my iPod is re-updated to the most recent version again?
No, it shouldn't. This is why you Restore the iPod. It erases the corrupt database.

  • Aperture vaults - setting up new computer with vault

    Hi there.
I have a MacBook with a large aperture vault on a separate hard drive. I have now bought a new iMac. Can I use the vault from my Macbook to set up all my photos on my new machine, thereby saving me hours of work. HELP
    Di from Devon

Yes, you can restore Aperture to another Mac from a Vault. Just do not expect it to be quick.
    -Allen Wicks
    From the manual:
    Restoring Your Aperture System
If you buy a new computer or use another system at a different location and want
access to the Aperture library, you can install Aperture and then transfer the library
from your vault (on your backup disk) to the other computer. If you experience
equipment failure or other unexpected events, such as fire or weather-related damage
to your equipment, you can easily restore the entire library to your new computer from
    a backup disk.
To restore the entire library from an external backup disk:
1 Connect the hard disk drive that contains the most up-to-date vault to your computer
    and open Aperture.
2 Choose File > Vault > Restore Library.
    The Restore Library dialog appears.
3 Choose Select Source Vault from the Source Vault pop-up menu.
4 Navigate to the vault from which you want to restore, then click Select.
5 Choose Select Destination from the Library Destination pop-up menu.
6 Navigate to the location where you want to place the library, then click Select.
7 Click Restore, then click Restore again.

Just got a new computer with Vista. Have current iTunes library on an external HD. (old computer running XP) Can I just plug the HD in and have all my playlists and settings? Or could someone point me where to find info to set this up? We've got 3 iPods running on this library and am hoping this is easy.

  • Crashed hard drive with Itunes - How do I set up new computer and Ipod

My hard drive crashed. I did have a backup of my Itunes folder. I installed Itunes on the new computer, copied the folders over from the backup and everything is OK in Itunes, but I can't play any of the tunes that were purchased from Itunes. It says the computer is not authorized. I went through and authorized each tune, and I also authorized the computer globally.
I set up my playlists again, etc.
When I went to synch the IPOD, the only thing that copies over are the tunes that had been uploaded from CD"s. Everything else is gone from the Ipod.
I tried to call support...but I couldn't understand the accent so decided to call back later.
any suggestions for what I might do next?
Need to Authorize the computer so it takes...
Need to synch Itunes to Ipod

For songs previously purchased from the iTunes Store, you can download them again to your new computer at no cost.  In iTunes, go to the iTunes Store Home screen.  Sign in (if you are not already) using the Apple ID used to make those purchases.  Click on Purchased, under QUICK LINKS.  On the Purchased screen, you can find and download previous purchases (that are not already in that iTunes library).
Then, sync your shuffle to that library, as desired.

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

need help getting new computer accepted as ok to use with i tunes & to sync with I phone 5

You should be able to authorise your account via the Store drop-down menu at the top of iTunes- if you are using iTunes on a PC then try pressing Alt-S and the Store menu should appear (or control-B and the menus should show, they are hidden by default on iTunes 11 on PCs) e.g.
If you syncing to that computer for the first time then you may also find this page useful : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141

Getting a new computer running windows 7. How do I get all my bookmarks and Add-ons, etc, etc, to my new computer?
Old computer is running XP with Firefox 4.
New computer will run Windows 7 with Firefox 4.

The user data is stored in the profile folder. You can copy the data manually by copying the contents of the profile folder, for details see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup or https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Backing+up+your+information
There are some add-ons and utilities that can make this process easier. The first one is the FEBE add-on ([http://softwarebychuck.com/febe/febe70.html] - The Firefox 4 version is currently in beta) which can be used to copy a profile. Another option is the free MozBackup utility ([http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com])

  • Old Computer Died. Set up new computer with old WRT54G

    Hi,
what is the easiest / best way to get up and running with my new computer(The old one died). The old WRT54 router is working fine and is up and running as always.
Do i need to change the router settings or install any software on the new machine?
Also earlier the router was configured with WEP security. If I were to upgrade to WPA, what would i need to do.
    thanks much,
    Sam.

    hi sam,
if the router is up and running, no need for you to reinstall or reconfigure the router. As long as you can go online when new pc is connected to it, no worries...it will work fine...If you want to change the encryption from wep to wpa, just go to the website, www.linksys.com/kb and search for the answer id 2651...

  • How to set a new computer as the master for iTunes

    Hi guys,
I have an iPad that when i first purchased set it up to work with another computer. Then I started using it with my work computer and now every time I want to move a book or photos onto my iPad i have to sync and overwrite everything on my iPad. Is there a way to set my work computer to be the master one?
When I sync something it varies between a prompt saying that it detects that this is not the iTunes that the iPad is linked to do i want to make this iTunes the main one" and "are you sure you want to delete all 14 apps.." to which i always click yes. Yet this computer is still not seen as the main one as i keep getting those prompts and keep having to re-sync everything.
Hope this makes sense. I wasn't sure if this post should be on the iTunes or iPad forum but i think it is something that might happen with other apple devices on iTunes too
    Thanks
    Iva

Yes, you can do this. I think this CNET video explains it well:

  • QUICK QUESTION-About to set up new computer...

Thanks in advance. I have an old 17" Macbook Pro and just got a new Macbook Pro Retina. I have each of them side by side ready to send all of my data from the old computer to the new computer, but I have not turned on the new computer yet. I don't want to screw up my iCloud ecosystem. So, my question is: In order to avoid any icloud issues, should I log out of iCloud and turn wifi off on my old computer before I start the migration assistant? Then, when it is done, I plan on logging into iCloud on the new computer and erase the old computer....I am hoping this will be a seamless transition as much as it can be.
Any input you can give me before I do this would be great. Thanks!

    MissPat321
What version of Premiere Elements and what computer operating system are involved?
Adobe allows for the use of that one purchased Premiere Elements serial number on no more than 2 of your computers.
If you have this purchased Premiere Elements serial number already on 2 of your computers and the new computer represents a 3rd computer, then you have to deactivate (Premiere Elements 8 or later under Help Menu/Deactivate) before uninstall.
Looking forward to more details and your progress.
    Thanks.

  • Setting up new computer - duplicates in library

I just got a new HP computer, running Vista, so I needed to transfer my music. Here's my problem. I used my iPod and the Transfer Purchases from iPod option under the File menu to copy songs into my new library. But, (user error) this was done twice, so now I have duplicates of almost 500 songs, so deleting manually is not a good choice. In addition, there were about 40 new songs in the new library, so they weren't on the iPod that was synced on the old computer, so I can't really delete everything and start again, without somehow preserving these new songs first. Any ideas?

Have a look at Teridon's iTunes Scripts there's a script in there for dealing with duplicates: Teridon's iTunes for Windows Scripts
