Setting up new user home dir -- what is *supposed* to happen"

Folks:
Could someone tell me what Workgroup Mgr is supposed to do when you tell it to set up new home dir?
Right now it creates the dir, but sets the perms to drwxr-xr-x, owner root, and it's empty.
This means the new user can't do anything with the dir, and I'm fairly certain Wkg Mgr is supposed to have put some files in there?
Any clues appreciated,
Graham

I've been having some trouble with creating home directories on my server, and others are no doubt more expert in this field than I am, but what should be created are the Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public, and Sites directories that you expect to see. If you create those (or whatever subset you want) and set the ownership of the directory to the correct user, Library and Desktop will be automatically created when they log in.
In my case, for a while now "Create Home Now" hasn't been working and the home directory is not automatically created when the user logs in. If I set it up manually everything works out, but I'd like to know why this is happening. I can't figure out what's wrong with the share point if that's the problem.

  • Deleting pre-defined apple folders in a Users home dir

    Hello,
i would like to know if its possible to delete the following folders in my Users-home dir:
    * Downloads
    * Music
    * Movies
    * Pictures
As far as i see 10.5 throws an error if you try to delete them via finder. Havent tried to delete them via terminal as i would like to know if it would cause problems.
Basically i guess those folders are "secured" as Apple applications like Safari, itunes, iMovie etc use them.
Well i dont use those applications at all and it would be great to free my home-folder a bit just to have a better overview.
    any help is appreciated
    fidel

    Hello fidel,
You can remove those directories but I would do so cautiously. Some applications may expect to "see" them in your home folder. Each directory has an ACE (access control entry) which will prevent you from deleting the folder in the Finder. To delete them you must do so as the root user in the Terminal app by preferencing the rm command with sudo.

Already tried to change LmCompatibilityLevel in registry (to 1), but didn't help. I recall, some year ago I had same problem from W7 (64bit) and then I installed Novell Client, now I'm trying to wo the client, should be possible?

If you can or can't access a share on OES11 without the Novell CLient
depends on if you have configured and enabled CIFS on the server.
Note that "Net Use" is an universal command, and uses the Novell CLient
too *if* it is installed. Many People believe "Net Use" would somehow be
Microsoft Network specific, but it isn't. It uses whatever network
client is isnstalled and able to access the resource.

  • What is SUPPOSED to happen to accepted invitations

I sent some invitations from iCal and got an email from one person accepting that invitation. What is supposed to happen to that? Am I supposed to be able to view the invitation in iCal and see that the person has accepted the invitation? That didn't happen ... or at least I can't see anything in iCal to that effect. I do get the email telling me that they have accepted the invitation. I looked at the notifications window but there is nothing there.

You have asked a super question. I, too, have no idea what receiving an iCal evite confirmation is supposed to do. I look to the event, and see that the invited person still has a question mark next to their name. Also, the evite doesn't get sent automatically, I have to open the appointment manually, and then click on the send button. iCal is an interesting program in that it doesn't do what one would expect the program to do automatically... automatically.

  • What is supposed to happen when a tethered Blackberry Tour receives an incoming call?

I have a blackberry tour on an enterprise system.  Can anyone tell me what is supposed to happen when tethered and an incoming call comes in to the phone?  My company will soon be getting rid of our aircards, and activating the tethering feature on the blackberrys.  We use VPN to connect to the intranet.  Also, can I make an outgoing phone call without disconnecting from the internet?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Hi Gruntz,
When you are using the tethering feature on your Blackberry device, the in coming call could interfere with your data connection. Also, when you make an outbound call, it would disconnect from your internet tethering feature. This is because the device would not be able to make and receive calls as its connected to the internet.

  • What's supposed to happen to SharePoint when the IIS blob cache is full?

Can someone possibly point me at a description of what's supposed to happen to SharePoint if the IIS blob cache directory fills up?
I've seen postings from MS saying that you need to keep the directory 20% bigger than the amount of files you might end up storing in there, but that's clearly not the whole answer.
I ask because we've had a problem today on SP2010 with files disappearing from people's sites as soon as they are uploaded, or being replaced with files of 0 bytes.   It seems to be caused by the blob cache directory being full, and SharePoint not making
any attempt to free up space in it.

For me, on Mac, the second (or more) time I open an image from Bridge or from Photoshop's Recent menu, it opens the image in ACR (7.2) a second time and appends a -2 to the file name once opened in Photoshop. Each time the image is opened up again, it adds an appended -x number. I'm pretty sure this is the expected behavior...

  • Setting up new users on family PC?

    Hi
    XP SP3.
I think this is really basic stuff, but im a bit dumb...
Whole family has been using the PC for several years, under the only login, as the administrator.
every time i get home from work, i have to undo all the system changes my kids have made.
Today, from Control Panel, I set up a new  user account for each person, but lost my access to the original ADMINISTRATOR, and lost all files, my docs etc.
I performed a system revert to yesterday to remove new users and get the ADMIN log in back, it worked, all good.
So, when I set up a new user, that user desk top is vitually empty, & cant access all the programs / files etc they are used to using...
How do i set up seperate user logins,, and transfer existing files and programs from ADMINISTRATOR to restricted users?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Believe it or not, Microsoft already has these instructions posted, just not labeled so that you would ever think of it. Basically what you need to do is to duplicate the current user account several times, one for each family member.
This is the page you want, How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP
I know that it does not match exactly, but the end result is the same. Once you get to that page you want to follow the instructions under Create a new user profile on the workgroup computer to create accounts for everyone (Think about making a restricted account for yourself as well) and then under Copy files to the new user profile to copy everything over.
That should do what you want.

  • Mistakenly Set up New Users: How to Delete?

Seems the guy who set up new MacBook set up 3 or 4 new Users, all called " ".
    Very confusing.
But I can't make them go away. Help please!
Ultimately I only want one User, and that's me (i.e. the administrator)
    Thanks in advance

This is unusual. When you get home just check to see if there really are more users than you expect, or if it is a problem with Finder.
You may not be familiar with Terminal but my request is easy and safe.
In the Applications folder, then the Utilities folder, find and open the Terminal. There will be a short message when you first open it.
then type, or copy and paste into it
    ls -al /Users
and press return. If you expect to have only one account you should see:
    drwxrwxr-t 6 root admin 204 18 Mar 23:28 .
    drwxrwxr-t 37 root admin 1258 1 Jul 22:09 ..
    -rw-rw-r-- 1 me admin 6148 22 Jun 20:08 .DS_Store
    drwxrwxrwt 8 root wheel 272 23 Apr 23:37 Shared
    drwxr-xr-x 17 me me 578 16 Jun 23:25 me
The last entry me being your account name. You can close Terminal now.
If that is the case these other accounts seem to be phantoms.
Please post back what you find.
So I conclude that each of my rogue user accounts has got its own set of these folders.
Even if you have other accounts their Pictures Music, etc would appear in their own accounts and should not be grouped together in any one account as you have described. That is why I say this is unusual.
I suggest you run Repair Permissions in the application Disk Utility, which is found in Applications/Utilities. Select the drive, select First Aid click on Repair Permissions.

  • Apache2 & User Home dirs....

OK, the setup. Multiple servers in one tree, broken down by containers.
ABCD is the tree. Picture three containers below this: 123, 456, 789.
Following info in TID 10090225, I've been able to setup the webserver
(WWW) in 123 properly. WWW is serviced from its own server, while the LDAP
search context is set to ABCD. Now, heres the odd part-- using the syntax
http://www.abc.com, get web pages. Using http://www.abc.com/~mkovacs, get
what is in my public_html directory as expected. My home dir is in a 6.5
server located in 456. Now, follow exactly the same steps for users in 789
and we get a 404.. The log shows:
[DATE] [error][client 10.1.1.1] could not create path context. error: 115
    (obsfucated for safety)
Now, I try this on any account who's home dir is in the server in CX=456,
all is fine. I am very confused at this point; its like it doesn't want to
access anything outside the one servers home directory structure... Did I
    miss a step somewhere??

I run it OK using the cn attribute.
It seems to me to be two issues:
If Apache is set up to use a particular user for browsing the
LDAP (eDir) directory it must have the rights to the home directory and
some other attributes in the LDAP directory
The server hosting Apache needs read rights to the home
    directories of the remote servers.
It has been a long time since I set these up, once I did it by editing
httpd.conf, and later using the graphical web manager from https - port
2200 - open source - manage single apache.

  • All Adobe Creative Cloud apps fail to work, creating new user Home folder fixed it.

We have Adobe Creative Cloud device licenses.    I had a user contact me yesterday with these problems.
Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 - error opening, "could not complete your request because the file is locked do not have necessary access permissions or another program is using the file photoshop"
Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 - error opening, "the operation cannot complete because of an unknown error [cant]"
Adobe InDesign CC 2014 - would crash when opening, no error given
These same apps worked when logged in as a different user.
    None of these worked:
I tried removing all kinds of user Adobe preferences, Application Support files, etc.
    Deleted ~/.adobe
I fixed permissions on the user's home folder.
    Renamed user's Home/Library to LibraryBak.
    Uninstalling and reinstalling CC.
What finally worked was creating a new user and copying the contents of the broken user home directory over, except for Home/* level hidden files. (eg: .adobe, bash_history)   Basically I just copied over the visible folders and used the Terminal to copy of the hidden ~/Library folder.
Does anyone have any idea what the exact cause was?  What file/folder could've been deleted to fix this instead of the longer route I took?

This wasn't answered and I see that it's still not resolved.

  • HT2518 Migration Assistant set up new user to which I don't have access to any of the files!!!

I tried to transfer my PC files using Migration Assistant. It set up another user and when I try and go to that users files, it says that I don't have permission to access them. What do I do now?

I'm going to assume the consolidating files does not work due to hard drive space limitations.
Since you're moving to Windows 7, have you tried using the Windows files and settings transfer utility?  That will move everything for you to the same location on the new computer, it also allows some control over what actually gets moved.
Alternatively, if you know the location of all of the media, it can be manually moved by copying it from the old computer to the new computer in the same location.
Also, using the Apple article on moving the library, take a slight twist on what it says.  Move the iTunes library to the external drive, update the settings in iTunes to reflect the library being on the external drive, then consolodate it.
The options are endless for moving the library... it simply takes a little effort to make it happen and possibly a twist on existing "standard" methods depending on your unique situation.

  • ASA WebVPN - Accessing Users Home Dir's

I have an ASA 5540 and an ACS 4.0. I am configuring an SSL based WebVPN for users in an active directory. I want to give the users access to their Windows Home Dir and have created a CIFS link in the URL list in the tunnel group policy for those users.
I want to give the users access to \\SERVER\Share\%username% as it is described in windows terms. How do I go about this in the ASA, as the above does not work at all? The ASA wants to use the / instead of \ in the CIFS shares. It works fine for normal shares and hidden share specified with $, but not using the %username% variable.
The documentation on SSL VPNS on both ASA and ACS 4.0 is terrible.

    On ASA 8.x code:
CSCO_WEBVPN_USERNAME - WebVPN user login ID
CSCO_WEBVPN_PASSWORD - WebVPN user login password
CSCO_WEBVPN_INTERNAL_PASSWORD -WebVPN user Internal( or Domain) Password
    CSCO_WEBVPN_CONNECTION_PROFILE - WebVPN user login group drop-down (tunnel-group alias)

  • Moving All The Important Stuff to a New User Account. What to take?

It's been quite an eventful week and, because I can't turn %%$$! FileVault off on my original user account, I've just decided to move over to my back up account. "Brian" now has Admin abilities but I was wondering about the process of getting Brian to look/feel just like my original, now f'ed up account. Is it just about putting the Preferences file folder onto an ext. HD and putting it into the new account's Library? (I've managed to screw things up REAL BAD messing about with my Preferences Folder. I really don't want to go through that again!)
Anyway, anything else beside the above folder? I've got all my music and photos/movies already on the Ext. HD. I'm so mad at the Brianhardy account, I really look forward to deleting it. (No, that doesn't make any sense...)
Finally, how do I pick a better picture for brian for the users window? Nothing against dogs but.......
    Thanks.
    Brian

    Hi Brian
I went through what you are currently describing for the same reason as yours: disabling FileVault. Let me give you a few suggestions.
First of all, what I did is I actually went through all the files in the Preferences folder, to choose the ones I really wanted to move to the new account. There were so many obsolete preference files in there remaining from uninstalled apps that it was worth seriously cleaning up this folder.
Second, the Preferences folder is probably not the only folder in your Library you want to migrate. I'll give you a list of the stuff I migrated, but some of if might not apply to you.
My address book. It was corrupted, so I ended up exporting all the contacts, group by group, and importing them into the fresh, new address book on the new account. But you might not have to go through this trouble.
My calendars. I am a .Mac subscriber, so I synced over .Mac between the two accounts. (Be careful, it is a bit more tricky than it sounds). Same for all the stuff that can be synced (see the .Mac preference pane): Safari bookmarks, email accounts and rules, keychain... For some reason the keychain sync did not work, so I had to do the same export-import procedure as for my address book, except I had to give my password for every item in the keychain... :S I can type my password pretty fast, now :P
/Library/Application Support/iWeb if you use iWeb to create websites, which I don't recommend, after fighting with it for quite a while (but I haven't tried iLife'08 yet). More generally, you should have a look into this Application Support folder to see if anything in there is worth migrating.
    /Library/Mail
/Library/Sounds because I had put lots of custom sounds in there that I can use for iCal alarms
    /Library/Widgets
By the way, after migrating to this new user, I decided NOT to make it an admin, and to create a second new user with admin rights. I read this makes your mac more secure. Whenever you do something that requires admin rights, you enter the username and password of this admin user.
I also kept the old user for a while, just in case I realize later that there is something I forgot to migrate (which happened a couple of times). I just deleted it a few days ago.
Changing a user's picture can be done in the Accounts preference pane in the System preferences.
    Good luck

I have seen other people having this issue, but have not seen that there is/was a resolution.

You can’t. An alias is just a different e-mail address for the same mail account. If you don’t want that user to have access to your mail account, then you must set up a separate mail account for him/her, not an alias associated with your mail account...
