Setting up OSX server in a virtual environment

I am looking into setting up OSX server in a virtual environment where the hardware will not be an Apple product. Can this be acccomplished

With the release of OS X 10.10, are there any plans to update the license agreement so that Apple's new version of the OS X Server software can be run on non-Apple-branded hardware? It seems that Apple is willing to change the license agreement between 10.4 and 10.5, so why not change it between 10.9 and 10.10, especially since the OS X client software 10.10 is available as a free download through the App Store, and the OS X Server software is available for $20 through the App Store? It also makes sense to open the software sales market to non-Apple-branded hardware users, unless Apple really is feeling skittish about the professional marketable quality of its newer model computers like the 2014 Mac Pro towards server hosting provider companies. They are using comparable Intel Xeon E5 processors, but not making any effort to market that computer to web hosting providers, and they are certainly not getting their foot in the door by withholding the potential of their OS X Server software by allowing it only to be run on Apple-branded hardware. If Apple gets their foot in the door with server software, they will be in a market for selling their OS X Server software AND their Mac Pro line of server-similar hardware FIVE-FOLD by directly competing with Microsoft's IIS, Linux software developers, AMD hardware developers, and other server hardware and software developers. Intel should be PRODDING Apple to get into the server market, and offering OS X Server for a measly $20 to non-Apple-branded hardware users would essentially STEAL their customers away from them, vastly growing the Apple domain.
If Apple does not want us to be making OS X Server applications, however, then by all means, they should simply discontinue the OS X Server software, because with the current license restriction of only being able to use the OS X Server software on Apple-branded hardware, in tandem with Apple's complete ignorance of the server market with their hardware which is using server-quality Intel Xeon E5 processors, Apple sitting in the water like an immobile swan among the Internet Server market is just plain dumb. I mean, Apple wants to make money, don't they? Or are they just fooling around with the consumer market, pretending like OS X Server running on a Mac Mini is something that Web Hosting Providers would take a second look at? MARKET YOUR MAC PRO LINE TO WEB HOSTING PROVIDERS AND LET OS X SERVER SOFTWARE RUN ON NON-APPLE-BRANDED HARDWARE ALREADY! STOP FOOLING AROUND HERE. I hope someone can help me.
On my OSX Mavericks server, I have a virtualized tomcat application. There is a Virtualbox instance, running Ubuntu, with bridged network. This means I have a unique IP number for this virtual machine. For tomcat I need to go to port :8080
I do want to set a "subdomain.domain.com" to open this 123.1.1.1:8080.
How do we set this in the webserver part of OSX server? Is this possible?

You will have two sets of DNS servers, your public DNS and the DNS running on your local network. If your external DNS is getting to your servers, then that's probably working. If you are getting the public IP address from your local network, then your gateway-router needs to "reflect" that address, or you'll need to configure local DNS services (OS X Server needs that in any case) to provide the local IP address for the public DNS name.
Put another way, read the article cited earlier and make sure your local DNS is correct. You can test for most of the common network and DNS configuration errors with the following harmless, diagnostic Terminal.app command:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
...and this will tell you about the configuration, and whether no changes are required, or about the various errors that might be detected.
You can see what IP address you're getting with the following Terminal.app command:
dig +short oc.example.com
...or whatever DNS host name you're using. You'll get either the public IP address (which if you use on the local network, your gateway-router needs to be able to detect that and run the connections back into your network) or your internal local network address.
Your local network clients will want to reference your local DNS server.

Set up OSX server on a mac already connected to a VPN

Hi folks I have a Mac which is connected to a work VPN most of the day. I have installed Server and want to test it as a local server for my home network. Im curious will it affect my work VPN connection if bother running at same time.
What information do I need to check to confirm this.

Experimentation and production are two goals that should not cross. You likely do not want to disrupt your ability to access your work network. I suggest getting an inexpensive USB 3 drive (or Thunderbolt, or Firewire) and installing a test OS with server on that drive. When you want to explore, boot into that drive. When you need to work, boot back to your normal drive. This way, you don't risk causing issues with the production side and if you have trouble on the experimentation side, you simply nuke and pave.

Interesting. I'll read those later after I finish the agenda for a meeting I'm having tomorrow. I've ran FreeNAS and Nexentastor in several scenarios over the years and have NEVER had a failure.
Then you've not run into the scenario that makes them risky. :) It's not that they fail "more", it is that they add no value over other options (like FreeBSD) but add some risk or cost (Nexentastor is not cheap at all.)
If no other products existed, they would be fine. The issue is that slightly better, otherwise identical products exist making the NAS OS product type never make sense to deploy.
For example, if FreeBSD itself didn't exist,...

Project Server jobs going to "Waiting to be processed" state after resolving Error:1053 in virtual environment.

Hi all,
I am using project server 2007 in virtual environment. Before some time, my project server queue service was not starting & it gave Error: 1053. Then server team made some small changes in registry & resolved the problem. After that queue service
was in running condition. But when any job goes into queue, it processed the job first, then after some processing, it goes into "waiting to be processed", and after some time it again starts processing. So, the project server queue is working very
very slow. I restarted queue, event, sql, timer services, but no benefit.
In log it is showing "Queue unable to interact with SQL.".

How does OSX Server work

Hi, I have 4 iMacs and 2 Macbook Pro's that have recently been brought from separate locations to one place, though all are currently working independently.
I am looking into setting up OSX server so that everything can be shared etc. I was just wondering if one of my Mac's will act as the central server and contain all the data or it will be a case of all data remaining on each Mac and just shared across the network when needed. Its just that I don't think any of the Mac's has enough storage space to store everything across all units. Thanks in advance. Craig

Well, this depends on how you set up the environment. First a thought about your data, then a thought about the storage.
You could store home folders on the server and everyone logs in directly to the server. But, if you are using Photoshop (or even iPhoto), you will not have a pleasant experience. User homes can remain on the individual systems and the users simply copy shared data up to the server. Now, if you are looking to create an asset library, you might want to look at products like Cumulus or Portfolio. Depending on your workflow, some form of digital asset management software may streamline your environment.
As far as storage, Apple provides a mini configuration that offers two 1 TB drives. These drives do not come in a raid so the OS is on one drive and the other drive is just sitting there. You can use the server in this capacity but you then have no redundancy on the OS drive or the data drive. If you RAID the two drives into a mirror, then your usable capacity becomes 1TB but you gain redundancy (redundancy ≠ backup). I will admit, I remain a fan of the direct attached storage model where you have a host system and you have storage. By separating the storage from the host, you have the ability to move the storage should the host have trouble. Perfect case in point. A Mac mini Server is covered under Apple Care. This is a consumer level warranty agreement. So, if there was a problem with your mini and all your data is in the mini, then you are likely down for three days (1 day to diagnose, 1 day to get part of send unit in for repair, and the third to get it operational again). I simply can not come to terms with sending a server with my enterprise data into Apple for repair. This does not sit well. But if the data is on an attached array, then the host can completely melt down. I simply need to connect the array to another device and I have my data.
Then, would server back-ups be done by an external hard disk with storage that exceeds 2TB and time machine? Or is there a more advisable solution?
Realistically, a backup volume should be a minimum of 2x the capacity of your source volume. This allows for historical increments. Perhaps one of the best primers I have seen on backup is a study funded by the Library of Congress. Check out this site http://dpbestflow.org/backup/backup-overview and take a look at the 3-2-1 backup rule. This is a simple rule that nearly every company can follow. But, it comes down to budget. Too often I see companies that plan for the server and the storage and then never consider the cost of backup. This is a crime as data is or currency. Machines can be replaced often in minutes. Walk into store and buy a new machine. But your data... hundreds or thousands of hours or work can not be reconstructed as easily (or if ever). Likewise, the American Red Cross conducted a multiyear study that concluded that "as many as 40% of small businesses do not reopen after a major disaster." (http://www.redcross.org/images/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m4240206_PrepYourBusfo rtheUnthinkable.pdf) I can not stress the importance of backup enough. And backup alone is not enough. You must test restoration on a regular schedule. What good is a backup if it doesn't work when you need it?
So, how do you backup? This will depend on many factors. They include number of locations you have access to, budget, capacity of data, etc. Keep in mind that many cloud solutions (Crash Plan Pro, Carbonite, etc) provide a means of satisfying the off-site requirement. However, if you are starting with a large data set, it can take many weeks (without a seed backup) to get your data replicated. Many will simply use Time Machine as the starting point. This is a good place to start. But you must monitor it. Trust. But verify.

If I want to run OSX Server and also want to run Windows 8 on Boot Camp, will server still run when I boot into windows?

I want to set up OSX Server on my iMAC running Mavericks and also install Windows 8 on Boot Camp. If I do this and boot into Windows, will that prevent server from running while I'm in Windows?

No. Bootcamp, as you've described, requires rebooting into your chosen operating system. If you want to run both OS X and Windows at the same time from your hardware, look at virtualization tools like Parrallels or VMWare.

OSX Server / MAMP / Move material from client to server

I have a several questions.
On my laptop I've been using MAMP (mamp.info) for quite some time, and I love it, most notably for the ease of use and clear directory structure. I've recently purchased a mini and osx server to learn that environment, and I know it already has php and apache installed. I'm actually running some web pages from the server now.
Question is, I'd like to use the mamp stack on the server... is this a good idea. I like that all the files are in one directory. From a security standpoint, is it safer to use the included stuff in osx server?
also, i'd like to use phpmyadmin and drupal on the server, like I am on the client stack once i'm done programming stuff. How can I go about this?

I've never used MAMP to know what it's plusses are, although I guess it must have some since a number of people seem to use it (although maybe that's because they don't know most of the stuff is built-in). However, if you do go that route you're required to maintain it yourself with regard to updates (compared to the built-in version that Apple periodically updates via Software Update). This may be good or bad depending on a) how much time you have on your hands and b) how quickly MAMP update their distribution vs. Apple.
I also loathe the fact that MAMP puts all its files in /Applications (this is just wrong).

Just download and install them like you would anywhere else. I can't speak for Drupal but I've used PHPMyAdmin on Mac OS X for years.

OSX Server as spam filter only and not mail server?

We have a mail server runnning on a Sun RAQ 550. I was wondering if I could set up OSX server 10.3.9 for spam filtering only. That is, filter spam for our domain, but have not have any accounts set up on it. Is this possible?

Yes it is possible. 10.4.x has all you need. For 10.3.x you will have to manually install amavisd, spamassassin and clamAV. How-to has been discussed as well here and on http://www.afp548.com
Once you have it everything installed, it is a matter of tweaking a few configuration files to forward scanned mail to your actual mail server.

Apache virtual host with OSX Server?

I have been running OSX Server for a while now, and just recently I decided to get McMyAdmin for my Minecraft server. The web client for McMyAdmin runs on port 8080, but I wanted it on port 80. I wanted to use it with my domain, so I just created a sub domain and pointed it to my server. The problem is that OSX Server apparently doesn't let me use port 80, even when websites are turned off. I decided to delete Server and just use plain apache. This worked until I realized that my website was only accessible locally. I have all the correct ports forwarded, etc. But I get the error:
Response Error.
Technical description:
502 Bad Gateway - Response Error, a bad response was received from another proxy server or the destination origin server.
when I try to connect from outside my network. This is probably just some simple thing I missed but it would be nice if someone could just point out what I did wrong here. Back to the point, I want to know how to run the proxy to my web client on port 8080 AND ALSO run OSX Server with or without apache virtualhost.

Web is stupidly easy - Apache has extensive support for multiple virtual hosts in a single server and will happily support as many domains/hostnames as you can throw at it.
Mail is a little trickier since it needs to hook into some kind of directory server to validate user addresses.
Mac OS X's Open Directory does support this, but it's a little cumbersome (basically every user has to exist in the main Open Directory domain as well as having a secondary email address(es) in the other domain(s).
This can get especially tricky when you have users with the same shortname in different domains - for example if you give [email protected] a secondary email address of [email protected] and you then get a new user [email protected], you can't give the third 'joe' the address 'joe' in Open Directory since that's already taken. This means he'll have to login using different credentials from his email address. Confused yet? You bet.
If you're prepared to eschew Open Directory you can just use Postfix's built-in support for virtual hosting, but it's a little more complex to setup and support and is entirely command-line based (i.e. there's no GUI for setting it up or supporting it).
So, for that reason you might be prepared to setup multiple virtual machines for each domain. It really depends on how much the domains are related (if at all).

Setting up an OSX Server as a Gateway between Wan and Lan

Hi there,
I just bought an OSX Server License and know im struggeling to setup my MacPro as a Gateway between my Lan and the Internet.
Im pretty new to these things I´m afraid, so a step-by-step list might help.....
I setup my en0 as PPPoE to my DSL-Modem what works fine.
Then i used the Gateway-Setup-Assistant to configure the DHCP,DNS Stuff....
Unfortunately none of the Clients in my Lan is able to connect to the Internet - the Server has got a connection but doesn´t pass it through somehow, although the Clients in my lan are connected to the Server.
Apple Resource and Help documentation is no help for me cause it just says use the Gateway Assistant and lean back.
I hope theres anyone out there understanding my issue and is willing to help!

Make sure you have the NAT service turned. If you can connect to the Internet from the server, but systems on the LAN can't get out, then NATting is the usual culprit! NAT (Network Address Translation) translates your WAN addresses to your LAN addresses. I've been through setting up OS X Server several times and usually end up doing it by hand instead of using the Assistant. I've seen problems in 10.4 server that when the DSL drops for a period of time for some reason NATting turns itself off. Don't know if Leopard server exhibits the same problem.

Virtualized UC applications from Cisco are only supported on the UC on UCS platform using ESXi 4.0, 4.0 Update 1, or 4.1 - hypervisor support may vary based on application.

Running Virtual Domains on Mac OSX Server and Postfix

Just purchased Mac OS Server X and Installed it. I am begining to setup mail servevices and this is my question.I have been using FreeBSD 5.3 and Postfix. In the main.cf I had setup 3 virtual Domains and used Canonical Maps and virtual alias to get my mail to the proper mailboxes. Now do I have to do that here in the terminal screen manually adding the canonical maps and virtual alias in the main.cf or does Server admin do it automacticly when I setup the virtual domains?

You can either go the manual editing route you were used to or use Server Admin. The results will be similar, but the approach different. Server Admin defines virtual domains differently (This is possible because postfix allows for different implementations.

OSX Server RAID Set-Up

I have a Mac Pro running OSX Server 10.5.8. A RAID was set-up initially, but I have upgraded to larger hard drives. I used SuperDuper to clone the start-up disk (including all files and applications). This went great. All works perfectly.
But now, I want to install the second drive (brand new) and set-up the mirror RAID.
My question is, when I use Disk Utility and add both drives to the new RAID, will it automatically copy/duplicate the start-up disk to the new drive? Do I use SuperDuper again for the new drive, then set up the RAID?
How do I ensure the integrity of the data on the start-up drive during the process of setting up the RAID?

Ordinarily, when you use Disk Utility to create a mirror, it's going to throw away the current data, so you'll start with a blank slate.
Given that you have a working SuperDuper clone of your system, the logical step would seem to be to update your clone, create your RAID set, then restore your system from the clone to the new mirror volume.
