Setting up Pop accounts

I just got my computer back completely reformatted, and now need to set up my mail accounts again. Previously, it was done in store. I need to set up two g-mail accounts and one mindspring account. I need help to know what the Incoming Mail Server would be, etc. thank you.

In general, your service provider should give you this information (if you don't have it backed up). For gmail, see the GMail POP setup help.

  • Setting up POP account vs forwarding

I'm setting up Mail for a friend. She has a Comcast POP account, gmail & AOL. The Comcast I'll set up as a POP account & the AOL I think has to be set up as an IMAP account. gmail can either be set up as a POP or can be forwarded to the Comcast account. Are there any advantages to setting up the gmail as a POP vs simply having it forwarded to the Comcast account. In my Mail, when I select "New Mail", in the account field pull down menu, I have my ISP account & .Mac accounts along with the .Mac alias addresses. Is it safe to say that if I forward gmail vs setting up the POP account, gmail will not show up in her pull down menu? Also does this general plan seem correct?

An AOL email account must be created as an IMAP type account with an email client such as the Mail.app.
To access a Gmail account as a POP type account with an email client, you must select POP forwarding for the Gmail account preferences via webmail access for the account.
If you don't create the Gmail account as a POP type account in Mail, it will not be available as an account to choose from when composing or sending a message.

  • POP account worked then stopped working

I used Mail to access my Compuserve account POP3-enabled mail account for months. Then it just stopped working. I changed no settings, did not alter the connection method to the internet, zip, nada.
I'm loathe to delete the account and start again because all of the messages will (supposedly) be deleted from my computer.
    Any suggestions?

    Well, now nothing works.
I have maintained a Compuserve account since 1984. I use the CSERVE software on my PCs and mail2web.com from remote locations (other people's computers). The account is active and works fine using those two methods.
After getting the G5 to do some editing, I setup MAIL to work with my new mac.com account and my existing Compuserve account. Everything hummed along just fine (I set the POP account to leave the messages on the server so i could access them from all my computers) until one day the POP account stopped retreiving the Compuserve address's messages.
That's what started this thread. The MAIL application no longer downloaded messages from CSERVE. Because Compuserve (now a member of the AOL family) stopped allowing the use of their SMTP server for uploaded (sent) messages, I simply used the mac.com account for outbound messages sent from my G5. Therefore, it the CSERVE SMTP server was never a part of this configuration.
In an effort to obtain more info, I logged onto my .Mac Mail page. For some reason, initially I was denied access, so I reset my password. I believed that I used the same password as before. Now MAIL will not access ANY of the accounts. Account Doctor show three failures (mac.com account, compuserve.com account, SMTP access). Earlier this morning only the compuserve account failed. Now all three show red lights.
I can fully access the mac.com mail on the web, however the compuserve account fails (this is from the G5). I can access my compuserve account from my PC, both with their software and via two different browsers. I can access my mac.com account via web2mail.com from both computers. the accounts are active and accessible.
My MAIL app seems to be failing. Makes no sense, but that's where I'm at.

  • I can only see three weeks of emails on the imap email account on my iMac even though the same email address set up as a pop account on my iPhone, iPad and another iMac show all my emails.  How do I change the setting to see more emails?

I have two iMacs, an iPhone, and an iPad.  All use the same email address but the new iMac would only let me set up the email account as an imap account. On this iMac I can only see three weeks worth of emails.  On the other iMac, iPhone, and iPad, this email address is set up as a pop account and I can see emails as far back as three years.  I use Yosemite on the new iMac and I cannot find out how to change the settings to let me see more than three weeks worth of emails.  This is an att&t email account which is basically a Yahoo account.

Nope. It will reset all settings. For fix errors.
Or you can try Logging out and Restart your iPad and Sign in again.

  • Change account setting from POP to .mac in Mail

OK, I have an account I set up in Mail. It is a .mac account, but I inadvertently set it up as POP. Suddenly on March 1st, sending messages from that account would always fail.
"Cannot send message using server smpt.mac.com"
It works fine now from my other accounts (even my other .mac accounts), but not the one that is set as POP in Mail.app. If I edit the massage to change the "from account,' then it works fine.
Could this failure to send problem be related to setting up the account as POP? I don't see how to edit that setting anymore. I don't want that setting to carry over to the iPhone when I buy one and sync it. Thanks.

    "What double punctuation problem?"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=822572&tstart=0
It turned out to be caused by a corrupt launch services database.. It''s known to cause Spell Checker to double punction marks.. It also stops Mail from sending messages..
I bet this corruption is the reason that my Mac didn''t recognize the iPhone that was attached.. Also,, it''s probably the reason why I couldn''t sync my old phone via my Bluetooth adapter.. I'll reset Launch Services and see if that fixes these problems..
BTW,, I set up a new Mail account as .Mac and I was able to send messages.. I haven''t checked again since I started getting this double punctuation.. I bet I can''t.

  • Trying to set up two POP accounts - won't work

    Hi there,
I am trying to set up a second Yahoo account on Mail. It shares the same incoming and outgoing server as my original account I use through Mail. But the user name is different. I can't log in with this new email address. It keeps throwing up the message:
'trying to log into the POP server "pop.mail.yahoo.com.au" has failed. Please make sure the username and password are correct. If you continue, you may not be able to receive any mail.'
This IS true, if I continue with the set up of this account, I'm not able to receive any incoming mail.
I have tried this countless times. I DEFINITELY have the right username and password for this second account.
Is it not possible to set up another POP account with a different user name but the same server name?

What targeting the Mail.app preference file, do the following:
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
The only exception to this is if you have a .Mac account which will be recreated automatically and/or if you created an email account as part of the computer setup assistant when first turning on the computer when new.
Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailbox files at Home > Library > Mail.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.
Test if this resolves the problem.

  • Set up gmail account in Apple mail and it only defaults to Pop.  How can I get it to allow me IMAP?

I have multiple gmail accounts.  Just set up a new one and configured it exactly as I have the others in gmail (enabling IMAP).  But when I set it up in Apple Mail, it automatically sets it up as a Pop account.  I cannot find a way to set it up manually...there is no check box that I can find to do this in the set up window.  I have repeated the steps several times and it always defaults to Pop.  So...how can I set it up as an IMAP account?

Got it...have to hold 'Option' button down after putting in name and password and it changes to 'Continue'.

  • Can I set up two pop accounts?

I need to add an additional email address that has a different incoming server. Is this possible? Every time I try to add a new pop account it tells me I've already set one up, which is true...I just need more.

Welcome to all three new participants to the Discussions.
We are going to need to confirm that the Mail folder is where it is supposed to be, and then look in it to see if there is some structural problem. This should not be happening, as adding a new account, whose Username and Incoming Server are unique, and do not repeat those of another account, should work fine, just as you expect.
In the Finder open your Home folder -- the folder that will open when you click on the House Icon in any Finder window. Once the Home folder is open (indicated also by the symbol ~), open the Library, and check to see that the Mail folder is properly at the root level of this user Library? If present, as expected, open the Mail folder, and verify the presence of at least one POP account folder -- it will typically have reference to both the server name and email address in its name.
    More info, please.

  • Trouble Deleting and re: Setting Up New Pop account on iPhone

    Hi,
I have a new hosting provider so I need to re-set up my POP mail account on my iPhone. I first deleted the mailbox account on iPhone, then re-created it with the settings provided by my email provider. I know these settings are correct, because the whole process worked on my iMac mail.
The problem is that I can send mail from the newly set up mailbox, but I cannot receive mail. Both my incoming and outgoing mailservers are the same.
Could my problem be that both my previous and current mail providers have the same Server/Host names?
Could it be that I did not successfully deleting my old host's settings? I still see all my old mail on the iPhone from my previous provider.
My new host says it's an iPhone problem because I have entered the correct settings and mail to and from the new server is working on my iMac.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

  • Help needed to set up a POP account for mail on iPhone5

My iPhone 4 email account works fine set up as POP.
On the 5 I can only set up a mail account as LMAP.
Any way to set up a POP account (bellsouth.net email)?

If it's defaulting to IMAP but you want to use POP, this user tip might fix things for you: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4294.

  • I can't set up Thunderbird to link to my gmail pop account.

I downloaded Thunderbird to assist me in saving materials from my university email, which will cease to exist in the coming months. I'm having difficulty, however, in linking my university email to Thunderbird. I suspect the issue is it is a pop account serviced by gmail rather than a regular, run-of-the-mill gmail account. Please help me! Thanks.

Just select POP at the protocol instead of IMAP when adding the account.
If it still will not set up, get the server settings that need to be used and add the account manually.

  • Just set up POP email account - only seeing inbox folder

    Hi
I have just set up a POP email account and it has found it successfully and downloaded all my inbox messages however I cannot see my "sent" messages or drafts and I also have a sub folder underneath the inbox which I cannot see.
Do I have to manually set up each subfolder or does the Iphone not automatically see the same subfolders when it connects? Also every email stays showing as un-read even if it is read on the server, even when I refresh the Iphone it still says un-read. Do POP accounts not automatically sync with the server or is there something I can do to set this up or an APP that will do this? Please can anyone help?
Thank you for any help or information.

With POP email accounts, the mail 'lives' with the client, not on the server. So, Sent and Drafts on the iPhone will only contain messages sent from or being composed on the iPhone. Any subfolders set up in the mail client on your computer are only on that computer. You can pull messages from the server to the Inbox on the phone if the mail client is set to leave the messages on the server for a period of time, since from the iPhone's perspective they are new.
POP is really designed for accessing your email only from one client. If you want to use several devices and access the same account, you are better off with an IMAP account, where all the mail 'lives' on the server.
