Setting up Private Browsing window to open up when Safari icon is clicked on first.

Setting up Private Browsing window to open up when only Safari icon is clicked on first, and remains after shut down.

Hi css,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to click on Safari in your Dock and have it open a new Safari Window. As you said in your post, clicking on Safari in the Dock brings the Safari window forward. There are a couple of possibilities to help resolve this situation. You can control-click (right click if enabled) on Safari in your Dock which will give you the option to open a new window. You can also click and hold on Safari, otherwise known as Press, to display these same options.
Mac OS X: Additional features of the Dock - Apple Support
Mouse clicks and key combinations for the Dock
Control-click
Reveals contextual menu for item. Menu choices vary per application or file. When used on Dock separator, it reveals Dock preferences. There you can turn magnification and hiding on or off, change the position of the Dock on screen, and change the minimization effect. Choose Dock Preferences to see more options.

  • How can I use In Private browsing alongside already open regular browsing window?

    Hi,
Whenever we start Private browsing, the existing tabs and windows we are currently working on closes and reopens only when the Private browsing is stopped. What we exactly need is, a new Private browsing window should open so that we could work on all the tabs which are currently open. Is there anyway to do this?
Thanks for your good deed with FF4. It's just awesome!

There was an addon that did exactly this but it's discontinued now. It probably worked the same way as you laid out here.
Now is there another add-on that does the same thing?

  • How do I make it so that Firefox does NOT close my other windows when I open a Private Browsing window?

Whenever I open a Private Browsing window, it closes all of my non-private windows until I end the private session. Is there a setting or add-on that will make it so I can have both private and non-private windows open? Both Internet Explorer and Chrome allow you to do this and it is the only reason I'm not using Firefox.

That unfortunately is the way that Firefox works.
You could create a new Firefox profile, but it would have it's own set of bookmarks,
you could use a different browser for either half, but again it would not share you
bookmarks. Firefox has the best bookmarks, but I understand your situation.
Private browsing does not suit my usage because it turns off everything privacy related and I would not want to turn off bookmarking or lose my session data. I am the only user on my computer.

  • I can't open private browsing windows or tabs

    Hi,
I don't know why but I couldn't open my private browsing windows anymore. All the windows I open via Files > New Private Window are not the ones with purple masks.
Could you please let me know what went wrong? Do I have bugs in my system?
Please let me know what you think.
    Thank you so much!
    Sincerely,
    Su

If you run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Never remember history) then you won't get the purple mask because all windows that are opened are automatically in PB mode.

    Hi,
Whenever I start Private browsing, all the tabs and windows which are already open closes and then the Private browsing window opens. All the tabs and windows reopen after I stop Private browsing. What I exactly need is to open a new Private browsing window so that I can continue using the existing tabs. Is there a way of achieving this in Firefox 4?

hard code I can place in to make this happen? Any help on this
    would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks...:-)

Select the link that will open the new window, and then apply
    the Open
Browser Window behavior from the Behaviors panel.

  • HT1677 Safari when set to private browsing and cookies from sites I vist has a problem. I want it to keep cookies from sites I use such as my email and comic sites. Right now it does not retain cookies that set up my choices of comics as site internal fav

Safari on the IPAD has the following problem.
When set to private browsing and only accept cookies from sites I visit does not retain them after I shutdown Safari and then later restart it. I also found out that even if I leave it in background and close the cover of my case it will not retain the cookies even though I did not deactivate it.
Things like email Ids and cookies that contain site specific favorites get deleted.
Here is a site where you can set a series of favorites which get stored as cookies.

Any Ideas... I have tried various settings but only public browseing keeps the cookies. I use private browsing to curtail popups and various trash from bothering me on my IPAD and Safari....

  • How to force safari to open a new window when dock icon is clicked

If Safari is already running on my MacBook Yosemite, and I click on the Safari icon in the dock, the Safari window is brought forward.  The behavior  I want is whenever I click the safari icon on the dock, is that a new safari browser window is opened.  I don't see this option in preferences (or any keyboard  mouse combination) that would make the dock icon open a new browser window.    (an option is available for new windows if you click on a hyperlink, but not if you click on the dock icon) .
p.s. And I don't want to first  have to place focus on the current running safari and then click File New...too many steps when all I want is a new browser window
    Thanks in advance

  • When using private browsing to view image results in Safari 5.1.3, only the first two rows of results are visible, the following four or so rows display greyed out place holders, and the safe search button is inoperable. Suggestions?

When using private browsing to view image results in Safari 5.1.3, only the first two rows of results are visible, the following four or so rows display greyed out place holders, the remainder of the results page is blank, and the safe search button is inoperable. When I turn off private browsing and refresh the page, everything works again.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have got the same behaviour after the last Safari Update to 5.1.3. It seems that Safari now handles some scripts in a new way. If you debug the Google Website, you will see, that there is some Javascript Error, that seems to prevent to write into local cache. After some searching I wasn't able to finde a solution for this problem, other then disabling Javascript while private browsing to prevent the script loading. You then are able to use Google with the old layout. The option to disable JavaScript can be found in the Menu "Developer", wich has to be enabled in Safari in the options first.
In my opinion this is a bug that is now occuring, because Apple changed something in private browsing and that has to be fixed by Google now, to run again. Or we will have to wait for 5.1.4, as you can read online Apple will change and bugfix the javascript engine in that version, perhaps this fixes the problem as well. I hope so!
If anyone is in the developer program perhaps you could test this with the beta of 5.1.4 and tell us if it works.

  • Firefox not opening a private browsing window instead getting another normal browsing window

I went through the forum question and found answers and tried that but it does not seem to resolve the problem.
Tried the steps given before that doesn't resolve it
tried uninstall completely and reinstall with new setup , still not getting the private browsing
    current software config:
    Windows 7 32 bit
    with Firefox 31 version
    Thanks for your help .

    Hello Philip,
You are right about the setting and your solution is working but given the option of setting to never remember history and then defaulting to private browsing mode is not given as a note to user while this option is selected, seems to me as a user experience hiderring issue.
However , I have found out that we can still will be able to open in private browsing mode for window 7 OS system by using ''right click option on pinned firefox from the taskbar is still able to launch the firefox in the private browsing mode.''
Please try it, its working even when we have set set firefox to "never remember history" in the options>privacy panel
Thanks philip for sharing your valuable findings for better firefox browsing experience

  • Problem: Ctrl+Shift+P does not work to toggle private browsing. It opens up a new private window, but no longer will toggle back to regular mode.

Opening private browsing w/ Ctrl+Shift+P works fine. But when I try to toggle back, it just opens up a new private window.
Is this a bug? Or an intentional change in the newest version?
Those of us who depend on keyboard shortcuts are often overlooked in software revisions. Users like me want to keep working without leaving the keyboard to grab a mouse...
    Any suggestions or advice?
    Thanks.

thanks. hard to lose an old keystroke habit....

  • When I attempt to open a new private browsing window, an "Index to file" window opens and shows everything on my hardrive.Concerned for security. What can I do?

When I opened Firefox prior to the update, my homepage had an address "file:///" and labeled "Index to file". the window showed all my hardrive files with links to other files. Concerned for security, I contacted computer support where I was told it may be malware. They cleared my caches and updated my operating system. When I updated Firefox and clicked on the private browsing icon (mask icon) The index to file window showed up again. What do I need to do to stop this from happening?
