Setting up RAID 1 on a new Mac Pro

I just received my new Mac Pro today, yay!
I purchased two 500GB HDs that I want to set up in a mirrored RAID (RAID 1). I plugged in my 300 GB SATA drive from my old Macintosh but the new system does not recognize it as a startup volume.
I was going to boot into my old volume, format the two 500 GB HDs, setup the RAID, then clone my 300GB drive to the new RAID. Since I can't boot to the old drive, I'm not sure how to proceed.
I've backed up my new system to the 300 GB drive and I'm planning to completely reinstall OS X, just in case there are some iLife goodies not on my install disks.
Is there another easier way to setup the RAID without formatting the HD. Can I clone the HD to my other 500 GB HD and then just activate the RAID?

Never set up a RAID on this board. As far as I'm aware data is lost, so back-up first. Hopefully you did that before you got the new motherboard?
I'm thinking if one is so careful with one's data to use RAID1.... If not I think the best and safest way to go is to get a new, third hard disk. That way you take the one with the precious data out of the equation temporarily.

- Prepare a floppy with the XP RAID drivers. Floppy is required if you want to boot of a RAID with XP.
- Enable SATA RAID and enter RAID BIOS to set up the RAID configuration of your liking, and with what hard disks.
- Set BIOS to boot off the installation disk.
Now jumping to the Windows installation:
- You will be asked to push F6 to supply special hard disk controller drivers.
- Let the installation manager find all required XP drivers. - And from there it is pretty obvious.
Mod: When installation is complete and system is stable etc, power off and connect the old data disk to the system and start copying. Be aware that system may want to boot from the old disk.

I just got a brand new Mac Pro and I am looking to get the fastest possible render and encode times possible. Originally I bought an eSATA PCIe card but was not impressed with the transfer times. In another forum a user suggested that I setup a RAID5. What kind of drives and RAID cards do you recommend as pro videographers? We have an older Mac Pro (no Thunderbolt) with four drives (2 of which are configured RAID 0). The new machine has a LaCie RAID on it with 2 drives RAID 1 and 2 drives RAID 0. What's the best way to migrate the data from the old system to the new system? Do I use Migration asst to get the data and settings from the old main to the new main and then xfer the data from the ancillary drives over?

What is the best way to set up my new Mac Pro?

Not wanting to screw up in a process I've not done with a brand new machine before, I'm looking for feedback on my plan for setting my new Mac Pro next week...
The physical plan is this:
For RAM, I have four 2GB SDRAM's plus the supplied six 1GB modules. My plan here is to install the 2GB rams into the first four slots and install four of the 1GB modules into the remaining four slots for a total of 12GB's.
When the cost for 4GB modules gets down to reasonable, I'll buy four of them and bump the current rams down the line which will then give me a total of 24 gigs where I'll stay.
For my hard drives, I'm installing a 160GB Intel X25-M into the first drive bay

using one of MaxUpgrades' 'MaxConnects' kits. I will use this drive for the operating system software and my applications and their libraries.
Next, into the remaining three drive bays, I am installing three 300GB WD Velociraptors. Mine are the pre-'backplane ready' versions:

which, thanks to this forum, I now understand, with the correct firmware installed, function well so I will install it and be able to establish hardware RAID. I will create a RAID 0 set with the three Velociraptors and use it to store all of my data files.
Backup will happen on a 1TB WD 'Caviar Black' external drive connected through one of the Sonnet card's external eSATA ports and using the OS 'Time Machine' software.
And that's the physical plan. My question is about setting things up. The physical installation part is straight forward and I don't expect any difficulties but I'm wondering what is the best way to install the operating system.
Do I take a first step keeping the supplied hard drive installed, install the solid state drive into the next drive bay and then transfer the contents from the supplied drive onto the SSD or do I do the complete physical installation process and do a 'C' drive start up and install the OS that way?
And, do you have any tips/suggestions on setting up the RAID 0 set?

oh mighty Hatter, I knew you'd have helpful guidance to offer! And thank you. You've confirmed my anxieties about the Sonnet card; kind of a 'too much, too quickly' sort of thing. And it's not that Sonnet's not a good company. Just everything to do with new technologies and the growth curve we all, manufacturers and users, go through when they come out. And, for sure, the new Mac Pro's are new technology; the single biggest forward leap in Apple's top-of-the-line machines for some time far as I can tell. Just reading at Intel's website about the Nehalem's is a joy!
So, I will proceed now with everything except for the controller card, leaving that 'til later. In the meantime, I think I'll just happily run with the four hard drives all running independently. No software RAID. I know just those, the SSD boot drive plus Velociraptor trio's going inside of a 2.66ghz 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro is going to be a working pleasure. Heck, this way, I'll get settled in and used to the machine's speed, have a great time doing so and then, in however many months, I can jump into spending another chunk of money on an excellent RAID card, RAID card's dear Barefeats will have tested and reviewed for us, set up my RAID 0 set and head of to those new races watching my computer leap for joy! Could be that, by then, the cost of Intel 160GB X25-M's will have dropped enough that I can afford to go for a second and have a two SSD RAID 0 boot drive... Yummy!

Interesting to read about the problems people have had with Sonnet's 2.17 update in PPC's... In this computer, my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7ghz, I have a Sonnet 'Tempo Sata X4P' controller card. I downloaded and installed 2.17 and got the same troubles; no cut, no paste, no 'drag and drop' etc. It was miserable.
Mine, fortunately, magically corrected after running the 'permissions verify and correct' process in Disc Utility and, after a restart, all was back to almost normal but for one exception; the Sonnet card was no longer present or functioning including the four eSATA ports out the back. (I ran Tech Tools Pro 5's repair suites first but, and who knows why, it didn't correct the problem...) This one was absolutely in the 'who knows what the f_'s going on and why it disappeared but did' class.
Oh, the other remnant is that, when the computer goes into sleep, after about five minutes, the fans rev up, and up, and the computer's frozen; only access is to do a forced shutdown pressing and holding the power button, so I've had to adopt a 'shut down whenever leaving it for more than fifteen minutes' approach to this dear friend. Once I've fully moved into and established my new one (which should arrive today, by the way... Yippeee!!! Can't wait!), I'll do a complete restoration on this one including taking out the Sonnet card. Usually, I sell my old Pro's but, this time, I'm going to keep this one as a back up and just general second computer for times I might need it. It has been such a great and dependable machine. Keeping it seems the right thing to do.

Best way to set up a new MAC PRO

I am a free lancer who has just taken the (huge) step to setting up a small graphics/final cut studio in my apartment (NYC). The core of my operation is a brand new MAC PRO. 3 questions:
1. What is the best physical environment for the new system in terms of temperature, dust, and access to the back of the tower? I am planning on using Metro Shelving to put the tower on.
2. I ordered a 1 terabyte hd. What is the best way to partition a hd this large?
3. So far I have only had experience setting up laptops purchased off the shelf. The tower was "made to order", what are decisions that need to be made when you are setting up the system for the first time?
Any other words of wisdom on the care and feeding of the new tower would be greatly appreciated!

You can skip on the Apple Pro RAID card. Pick up a 3rd party card later.
I would pick up three of the above F1s for $150 ea. and can be used in RAID using Apple software, works fine.
I would have saved $$ and skipped the 1TB drive. Great for Time Machine and backups.
Why use external drives for media if you can have native SATA, use those for backup too.
When you have more drives you can clone your system and files as needed. One thing I would do now is make a clone of your system to one of your FireWire drives that you can boot from and use to restore to another drive later.
You may as well partition the new drive so you can isolate the system and apps if you want, and before the files fragment the drive more than it is so you can resize and create partitions if it helps.
I have only used mirrors a couple times, I find I'd rather put two or more drives to separate uses, and it isn't a replacement for backups.
There are some RAID5/6 3rd party external controllers that can drive up to 4 x 5-drive cases (Port Multiplier).

You certainly could keep the old Mac Pro in Firewire mode (hold down the T key on its keyboard as you boot) to show its drives on the new MP. This is basically as fast as putting the drives into a Firewire enclosure.
Or you could boot it normally and share its files over the network using the Sharing panel of System Preferences. If you turn on both File and Screen Sharing, you don't even need to have a monitor attached - you can do all administration using screen sharing. However, this method requires that you open all files over the network, which will be slower than the direct-connect method above, and may also not work with all applications.

If it has Lion, use the Recovery Mode boot Command-R
Use that to erase and reinstall - it has network install ability.

I can't really answer without any more information, but I guess it could be possible the OS wasn't properly installed. If you're near an Apple store, I would take it in to them and let them troubleshoot it. If not, I would pop the DVD drive open with a paperclip: There should be a small hole in the front of the actual drive. Not sure if you can get to it by moving the door down (the little door that opens for the DVD drive) to access it or if you'll have to remove the side of the computer and get to the hole that way. OR: You should be able to open the DVD drive while it's attempting to startup by holding down the mouse button. When you get the DVD drive open, slip in the Tiger or Leopard disk and hold down the "C" key to startup from the DVD. Then you might be able to re-install the OS.
If you want to, you can open the side of the computer (while it's off!) to make sure all the RAM, drive(s), and the videocard are seated properly. When my ATI x1900XT videocard went bad, it would cause the computer to reboot.
Just a couple things to try, anyway... Maybe someone else will have better ideas.

Configuring my new Mac Pro with a RAID solution... Help appreciated!

Hi, I am about to purchase a new Mac Pro to have in my studio.
One of my unresolved features is what to do with storage. Currently I am considering either: (a) the Apple internal RAID card with 4x500GB 7200 RPM drives; or an external G-Technology G-Speed eS also with 4x500GB 7200 RPM.
In either of these cases I would have an additional external drive of 1.5TB (pretty much the available storage I should have from the RAID), to perform back-up and take off-site.
Questions:
(1) Anyone has experience with Apple's Raid Card? Better or worse than an external solution?
(2) Any feedback on the storage from G-Tech? I have a few mini drives with great success.
(3) Any suggestion on RAID vendors (beyond what I am considering)?

I will go with a RAID, but haven't decided on the configuration - I'm thinking of having 3 or 4 drives in RAID 5; I perceive a benefit in going with the Apple RAID card rather than a cheaper third party card - it's designed to work well with the Mac Pro and with Apple Care you'd get warranty coverage. Can't decide if it's better to save money and buy drives from a third party (and maybe end up with them not covered by Apple Care), or to pay more and get the drives with the machine.
I got burned many years ago by four failed IBM 75GXP hard drives, so I think choosing a reliable hard drive is very important; I'll probably go with a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 or Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000. Great info here:

Looking for Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array options that can match the new Mac Pro's quietness -- or at least come close!

Maybe it is too early to talk about anything beyond the Pegasus2 Series (http://www.promise.com/promotion_page/promotion_page.aspx?region=en-global&rsn=1 00) when it comes to Tunderbolt 2 storage options. Looking for something on the order of 8 to 12 usable TB of redundant storage or possibly a JBOD option of 4 bays. This is coming close but I do not think it is Thunderbolt 2 (http://www.g-technology.com/products/g-raid-thunderbolt).
Either way -- looking for users experience not only on usable Thunderbolt 2 solutions but more importantly noisiness. I want to upgrade my existing Mac Pro to one of the new ones and I have found the old one to be nearly unnoticable in a quiet desktop environment. Would love to find the same peace and quiet when migrating to the new form factor that is going to need external storage to match what I have been used to inside the old Mac Pro.

So I just bought a new Mac Pro, wireless keyboard and mouse. i am a first time Mac user. How do I even get started......connect the wireless mouse and key board to the Mac Pro desktop to even get started??

Just turn on the mouse and keyboard and observe that the green light comes on and starts to blink then turn on the Mac. The Mac should give you on-screen instructions.
