Setting up RAID on X205-S9349

Hello,
I recently had to reinstall Windows Vista on an X205-S9349.  I actually was not aware that the computer had two hard drives at first..  When I went to install Windows Vista, it showed one disk being the primary drive, and the other as a logical drive, so I deleted both partitions...  Afterwards, I can only create two primaries, and I can't figure out how to get the computer back to how it was.  It has two 120GB hard disk drives.  Before I reinstalled the OS, both drives were acting as one (240GB drive).  I can't find anything anywhere about how to get it back to how it was!  So now, the PC is stuck with two 120GB hard drives, one has the OS on it, and the other is empty...  Please help!  How do I put it back to the way it was?
Thanks in advance,
Jon

Jon, you should restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using recovery discs. You can obtain them from Toshiba at Get Recovery Media here.

  • Satellite X205-S9349 - Question about GPU temperature

    Hi,
I purchased an *Satellite X205-S9349* approx. 10 months ago an recently installed a temperature monitor for the nVidia 8700M GT card. While using 3d modeling applications I recorded the average temperature at *97 degrees Celsius*.
Idling the computer results in a temperature of *60 degrees*. The computer is present in an air conditioned room, who's average temperature is *19 degrees*.
Is this the normal operating temperature of the X205-S9349 when on full load?
Can this temperature damage my computer?
Is there anything I can do to reduce the temperature without voiding the warranty provided by Toshiba?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pabst
PS: I have propped the back of my computer up so that air can easily flow through the bottom.

    Hello Pabst
In my opinion there is no reason for panic. If you use original Toshiba display driver your notebook is protected and if the notebook will come up to critical temperature level it will shut down automatically to avoid hardware damage.
This with propping back side is great idea. Sometimes I do the same. The notebook can be cooled much better. And one more thing: do not believe always what those third part applications show.
    Good luck!

  • Advice on RAID Sets, Volume Sets, and RAID Levels of the Volume Sets using an Areca Controller

I have read through a lot of information on disk usage, storage rules for an editing rig, users inquiries/member responses in this forum and I thank each and every one of you – especially Harm.
In building my new workstation, I purchased five (5) WD 1T, 7k, 64M SATAIII hard drives and an Areca RAID card, ARC-1880ix-16-4G, which I plan to use primarily as my media/data disk array.  The workstation will use a 128GB SATAIII SSD as the OS/program drive and I will transfer two (2) WD Raptor/10k SATA 70GB drives from my current system for pagefile/scratch/render use.  I tentatively plan on using a mobo SATAIII port for the SSD and mobo SATA ports with a software RAID (level 0) for the 10k Raptors.
In reading the Areca Instruction manual, I am now considering exactly how I should configure the 5 physical 1TB drives in terms of RAID Level(s), Volume Sets, and RAID Sets.  I must admit that I like the opportunity of allowing for a Dedicated Hot Spare as I am generally distrustful of the MTBF data that drive vendors tout and have the bad experience in the past of losing data from a mal-configured RAID array and a single drive hardware failure (admittedly, my fault!).
In line with the logic that one doesn’t want to perform disk reading while trying to write at the same time (or vice-versa), I am thinking the approach above should work OK in using the mobo disk interface and both software and external hardware RAID controllers without having to create separate RAID level configurations within a Volume Set or further dividing up the physical drives into separate RAID sets.  I know in forum messages that Harm noted that he had 17 drives and I could envision a benefit to having separate RAID sets in that situation, but I am not at that point yet.
To some degree I think it might be best to just create one RAID Level on one Volume Set on one RAID Set, but want to solicit thoughts from veteran controller users on their workflows/thoughts in these regards.
Anyone care to share thoughts/perspectives?  Thanks
    Bill

Thanks for the speedy feedback Harm - I appreciate it.
I was thinking RAID level 3 as well.
Of course, it's always something!   I purchased the Caviar Blacks by mistake - which are non-TLER.   I will work with EggHead to return the ones I purchased and replace them with RE4 versions  as I'm not thrilled about the possibility of the controller declaring the volume/disks degraded unnecessarily and although I have the DOS utility WDTLER where one is supposed to be able to enable/disable TLER on WD drives  - I suspect WD is way beyond that now anyway with current builds.
I agree with you about just testing the performance of the options for the raptors - on the mobo and then on the controller.  When I benchmark them I'll post the results in case others are curious.
    Thanks again....off to EggHead!

  • Setting up raid

I am afraid I have come to a dead end! I have read the manual and the excellent guide in this forum. But I am stuck! I am trying to set up a raid 0 array .
    The system I have is
    865PE Neo2 FIS2R
    Intel P4 3.2Ghz 800FSB
    2 x 120Gb Western Digital SATA HDD
    1 x 512Mb Kingston Memory
    1 x Floppy
    1 x Sony CDRW
    1 x 64Mb Graphics
I have not got windows installed yet - both HDD are new and blank. I have them both connected via sata cables to  SATA3 & SATA4. In BIOS I can see both HD on IDE 3 and 4, I can see the floppy and CD drives. In integrated peripherals I have integrated peripherals set as follows:
    Native mode
    sata only
    sata active = yes
    pata active = yes
    pata channel selection - both
Configure sata as Raid 0 = No????? - is this correct?? – I have tried this as yes with the same results.
Onboard promise IDE is set a Raid
I save and reboot - using the control F keys does nothing. I can't enter Promise BIOS - what I get is the message flashing by ''no disc attached to fasttrack controller. The Bios is not installed.
Boot failure insert boot diskette in drive A press any key to continue
It is obviously trying to boot from the floppy - Control F does nothing. I expected to get a screen taking me into Promise set up. Do I have to install Windows XP first and then use the MSI cd to install raid drivers. Sorry if I sound dim but neither the MSI raid manual or the forum guide make this clear for me 

    Sata 1&2 = intel controler
    Sata 3&4 = promise controller
someone didnot read the manual OR guide.

I set up Raid on my Mac Mini Server and lost my Server software. It is not listed in my "purchased" apps. How can I get it w/o having to purchase it? Will my serial # be enough to show it is a mini server and under warrantee be enough to get it back?

If it's not listed in Purchases, check that it's hidden, and if so, unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928 After that, go to Purchases and download OS X Server.

  • Problems Trying To Set Up Raid 0 On SATA (Plat SLI)

I booted up for the first time and tried to install the drivers for RAID as I installed Windows. After installing the drivers, Windows wanted me to pick one of the drives, and I figured I should have set up the RAID using the RAID setup on the motherboard. I restarted to try and do this and it just tells me 'error loading operating system' every time. It will let me install Windows if I want to, but I want to set up my two drives in RAID 0 first - is this trouble 'cos Windows plonked some data on the drives?
Pressing F4 or Ctrl + S is supposed to invoke the RAID setup utility but it doesn't work (I don't get a screen like the manual says I should for five seconds either). Whilst installing Windows, F3 for 'exit' didn't work, whilst Esc for 'cancel' did...
I've tried the reset CMOS button which didn't do anything useful either.
Edit; just noticed 'T' and backspace doesn't work either. Could/must be a big fat keyboard issue.

Sorry was on vacation last week.  Here is what you want to check.  In your Bios, (I think under Integrated Peripherals, but not 100% on that) There is an option for enaling or disabling the Silicon Raid controller, I recommend disabling it, especially if you want to use SATA II.  There is also an nVidiaRAID Config section, make sure that it is enabled and that the correct items are enabled underneath it.  The ones I have are:
    RAID ENABLE                       Enabled
    IDE Primary Master RAID        Disabled
    IDE Primary Slave   RAID        Disabled
    IDE Secondary Master RAID    Disabled
    IDE Secondary Slave RAID      Disabled
    SATA1 RAID                         Enabled
    SATA2 RAID                         Enabled
    SATA3 RAID                         Enabled
    SATA4 RAID                         Enabled
Under the IDE Function setup make sure SATA1/SATA2 and SATA3/SATA4 are  ENABLED
    as mentioned before:
    Onboard SiI3132 RAID         Disabled
Onboard SiI3132 Mode        RAID   (I have this set to raid although with the controller disabled I doubt it makes a difference)
now after you get the Raid setup to launch and configure the array, go back into bios and make sure the boot sequence shows the raid array at the top of the list, if you only have the 2 drives it should already be there.
after all of that, go back and install windows using the f6 to load BOTH drivers from thre floppy marked Nvidia Raid Drivers

  • How to set up RAID 5 in Windows 8

What are the procedures and settings  to set up RAID 5 in Windows 8?

What are the procedures and settings  to set up RAID 5 in Windows 8?
I would not do it... Throw in one more spindle and build RAID10 (or Storage Spaces equivalent of it). There are very few workloads working well with parity RAIDs and also single parity RAID has own issues with modern high-capacity spindles (slow rebuild
times, silent bit rot, high chances of a double failure etc). See:
    Why RAID5 is bad?

    Good luck!

  • Z68 G3 - Need help setting up RAID + Smart Response please.

Ok, this is the first time I am going to be setting up RAID. I have two new 64 GB SSD's hooked up to SATA 1-2 (The first 2 white SATA 6.0). I go into BIOS, and I set the settings to RAID, and then I enable SATA 1 + 2. I save and reset, and during the post, I press ctrl I. I see the raid settings with the raid devices... like its going to go into RAID set up; however, it then shows the logo screen for msi m/b and then goes to command and does nothing after that.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need to install the controller drives via floppy drive? Bad thing is I don't have a floppy drive, but I can buy one. Is there any way to install the controller with out the floppy? Can it be done via USB?
I just built this new system today, so I am very anxious to get it up and running, so please reply fast hehe Im waiting =D

Never mind, I wasn't pressure Ctrl I correctly

  • System won't boot from Windiws XP boot disk after setting up RAID 0 array???

After connecting my two Western Digital Raptor on SATA ports 1 and 2, and finally being able to launch the Bios option ROM "Intel SATA Raid manager" (had some problems associated with an LSI 4i megaRAID adapter in a pci slot), I was able to put the two disks in RAID 0. After exiting the Raid manager, the DMI pool was updated, and I was expecting the computer to boot from the XP installation boot disk in the optical drive. Instead I got the message: "Disc boot failure. Insert system disc and press enter.". This is very strange, as I installed XP earlier with the Raptors functioning as IDE drives without a problem (so IDE was selected in the BIOS for SATA drives instad of SATA as in this case). As a result I am unable to install Windows XP (professional).
    My system configuration:
    Motherboard: Platinum power up edition
    Bios version: W72461MSv7.3
    CPU: Intel Core2Duo 6700
Memory: Corsair, 2 GB in matched pair DDR 2, now on 2 volts
Harddrives: 2 western digital raptors of 150 GB in RAID 0
Optical drives: LITE-ON DVD-rewriter and reader from same brand (also DVD)
    PSU: Corsair 620 Watt
Now removed: LSI Megaraid 4i adapter (pci) with 4 Samsung spinpoint harddrives of 4 in raid 5
    XP professional
Boot sequence: CDROM, floppy and harddisk in this order
    BIOS settings:
    USB keybooard and mouse disabled
JMB361 option rom disabled (not using it)
Onboard lan boot rom disabled (not using it)
    Sata mode set to RAID
All other settings "optimal" using F7 in BIOS
Usinf F11 during startup doesn't help: the CDROM is not displayed in SATA mode, only floppy and harddisk.
Using Microsoft XP professional boot floppy's did'nt help either. System restarted after loading first floppy (ther are 6 in total), and no result.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
    Hans

so your problem is TWICE as important, and you start another thread.

  • Msi 990fxa-gd65 setting up raid 1 with os win7 x64 on ssd

Ok, I just built my first computer and am trying to set up win7 x64 on my 120g SSD while running two 2 TB wd hard drives in raid 1.  I have tried everything and am at wits end!  please help
i set up raid in the bios, then set up a LD with the two 2 TB hard drives however when I go to install win7 it says its missing a driver and wont proceed.

If the SSD is connected to a SATA-3 port you may need drivers to make Windows know about it.
Same for the RAID, but that one can be loaded after Windows is installed.

  • Setting up RAID - "create" button dimmed

Our school has just taken delivery of a brand new 2.8GHz Xeon XServer, with two internal 80Gb SAS hard drives. The first drive has been freshly re-installed from the Mac OS X Server installation DVD and Software Update was then used to update everything. The current OS is 10.5.6. We will be using external hard drives for data storage once it is actually running as a server.
When using Disk Utility to set up RAID on the second internal drive (to mirror the first drive), we have hit a brick wall. After following the instructions explicitly (with quite a few attempts at trying different ideas - variations on the general theme - to see if it can be persuaded to work) the "create" button stubbornly remains dimmed.
We initially started from the boot drive (the first internal hard drive) and running Disk Utility from there. We also tried starting from the installation DVD in case that worked. Same thing - the "create" button is still dimmed!
Have we missed something? Could it be a hardware problem? Has anyone else had the same problem and solved it? I am open to any suggestions and ideas.

+< I'm assuming you don't have the RAID Card installed? In which case I'm guessing you're simply trying to use Disk Utility's built-in RAID option?+
    >
Yes, we don't have the RAID Card installed and we are trying to use Disk Utility's built-in RAID option.
+< Boot from the Installer Disk, launch Disk Utility, select the Drive not the partition, click on RAID and drag both the drives one after the other into the window. Supply a suitable name. Select the RAID type you want. Click on the 'Options' button and enable the 'Automatically rebuild RAID sets' option. Create should become active now. >+
This sounds like both the RAID drive and the original drive are classed as being part of the "RAID set". Even after much searching, I could not find any clear information as to what comprised the RAID set, whether it was just the "backup" drive or both it and the "original". Often the information and instructions assume prior knowledge and/or experience. It's always pleasing to find instructions which are completely self-explanatory, cover any necessary preliminary steps, and need no further cross-referencing by the user.
+< Before you do any of this make sure you've a back up of anything of value on either drive. Creating a RAID set deletes data on all drives. >+
We will obviously have to re-install everything on the first drive. The "Getting Started.pdf" document which is on the Server Installation DVD does contain the following - You can set up RAID mirroring after installing Mac OS X Server if you install on a disk that isn’t partitioned - in Appendix A, under Creating a RAID Set. This probably set us thinking that it didn't necessarily need to be done BEFORE installing the OS, etc. on the first drive.
Thanks for your help, Tony. If you don't hear any more from me, assume that it worked.

  • Trying to set up RAID on GNBMAX-FISR

    Am building machine - P4 2.8Ghz, 2x512Mb Corsair CMX-512-2700C2 RAM, CD and CD/DVD.
Trying to set up RAID using the Promise built in RAID controller with EIDE drives.  According to the manual, you attach a single drive to the RAID connector (IDE3) and I assume the other drive to one of the other two IDE connectors, boot machine and do the CTRL+F to enter the RAID setup.  It only see's the one drive, never the second one.  I tried to install from scratch, using the "F6" option in the XP install to install RAID drivers, but didn't work.  I am going to try installing XP on both drives individually, then conect to the RAID and see if it was just a driver install issue.  Anyone out there set up a RAID n this board?  The only other RAID I set up was on a PCI card RAID controller.
    Thanks in advance!
     ?(

Thanks for the reply.  So if I am understanding you correctly, I HAVE to use the SATA connector(s) regardless of if I use the IDE3 for one of the drives?  Or like you say, just get the adaptors for both drives and run them on the SATA to get my RAID 1 array set up?
I have 2 WD800BB 80GB drives I want to set up for redundancy.

  • K9A2 platinum setting SB600 raid

    Hi all,
The K9A2 platinum has 2 raid controllers onboard. A SB600 for port 1-4 and a promise T3 controller for port 5+6.
I'm trying to make my RAID config on port 1-4 working. Where can I configure the RAID 1+0 for ports 1-4. On port 5+6 I have 2 raptors in raid 0.
I already searched around, but everywhere they talk about setting up the promise controller. I want to configure the SB600 controller.
the Raid 0 on port 5+6 is for booting (already working), and the raid 1+0 on port 1-4 will be for data.
The 4 disks are with HD tune erased with zero fill.
in the bios, the controller is set to raid.
in the FastBuild utility I don't see the disks from port 1-4.
Can anybody help me with this?

OK, I got into the fasttrack menu for the SB600.
I also use the promise raid controller. When I want to enter the menu for the SB600, I have to disable the extra RAID controller in the BIOS under 'Integrated Peripherals'.
When booting after change and press ctrl+f, the fasttrack menu for the SB600 appears.
Thank you for your help Svet.

  • Set up raid on A78M-E45

How do I set up RAID on A78M-E45 with AMD A4-4020 Richland processor. I can't find anything in the manual or online here.
    Thanks.

Re: Setting up RAID with A78M-45
I had the same question and after much searching this is what I did.
    - Download the RAID driver from the MSI web site
    - Set the BIOS to "RAID"
    - Boot from the Windows Install disk. In my case this was 8.1 x64 and at the Disk & Partition screen the Installation reported it was needing a driver.
    - Browse to the location with the downloaded RAID driver, and the Windows installation continued
    - Once Windows was installed I downloaded and installed the "Chipset drivers" for the motherboard. This required a re-boot
    - After the reboot on my desktop there was a new icon "AMD RAIDXpert 2". Open the utility and login (admin admin).
    - From here you can configure RAID on your remaining drives. I downloaded the .pdf the AMD RAIDXpert 2 utility as it looks like I need to read a bit before configuring my drives.
Hope this is helpful to anyone else needing to do the same thing.

what SATA port shall i use?
    any jumpers?
    or bios?

first u should have connected the SATA hdd to one of the controllers using the orange cable ... if so .. which one .. and make sure that controller is enabled in the bios then boot the pc at the point u see via controller hit "tab" and set up an array or "control & f" keys i think for the promise .. when the pc reboots press f11 .. with the xp cd in ur drive tell it to boot that and when u get the first blue screen hit the f6 key several times (install 3rd party raid drivers) .. win will ask u to insert the floppy for the controller ur using .. only other thing is to set the raid as ur boot device in the bios if not already done
hope that helps and is the info u wanted ... if not ask more we here to help one another
