Setting up router with ethernet bridge

I have a new computer and want to re-setup my Linksys Model BEFSX41 Version 2 broadband firewall router with the Linksys Model WET11 wireless-b ethernet bridge to use my laptop wirelessly.  I don't want the desktop pc to be wireless, just the laptop.  Do I follow the steps in the FAQ "Hos do I setup my Cable modem with my Linksys Router?".  Then are there more instructions for the ethernet bridge?
The pc is in the basement with the cable modem and Linksys router.  The ethernet bridge is upstairs where the laptop is.  Is this easy enough do to, or am I better off paying $75 to a computer tech to come to my house to do it?
Thank you for any suggestions.
Diane

You cannot do the job that you described with the equipment that you listed.
It is not clear from your note how you intend to use the WET11.  A wireless bridge is designed to receive a wireless signal (from a wireless router) and send it to a computer that is wired to the WET11.
For example, the following setup would work:
modem -- wireless router )))      ((( Wet11 -- computer
but you never mentioned that you have a wireless router.
Note that your WET11 cannot broadcast a network, for example, the following DOES NOT work:
modem -- BEFSX41 -- WET11 )))      ((( wireless computer
However, instead of (incorrectly) trying to use the WET11 to broadcast a network, you could use a WAP (wireless access point) to broadcast your network.   For example, the following would work:
modem--BEFSX41--WAP )))   ((( wireless computer
                                  and/or   ((( WET11--wired computer
For a WAP, you could use a WAP54G or a WAP200.
Hope this helps.

help connecting Apple TV to router with ethernet cable

The process is transparent. I have done it before.
Now, it gives me an error message when I try Wi-Fi:
"There was a problem connecting to the network. Check your settings and try again.(5)"
When I try the ethernet cable connection it won't let me do automatic or custom.
I unplugged and replugged the Apple TV box but don't know how else to trouble shoot the lack of connectivity.

  • Does the airport express need to be connected to router with ethernet cable to work?

We are trying to set up 2 zones for streaming music. The guys at Apple sold me an airport express. However I cannot get it to connect to the internet unless it's wired directly to my wifi router. This does not work for me as the components I need to plug into it are located in another room of the house. Am I doing something wrong or am I trying to get the AX do something it can't?

The Express cannot wireless extend non apple router.. however it can join a wireless network that is non-apple and it can work as a wireless to ethernet bridge. It should be able to connect the audio output to amp or speakers. But you need to do the setup, choosing join a wireless network which is under the options and not displayed as a standard connection type in the utility.
Here is one example of doing it.

  • At wits end trying to set up router with this laptop!

I am very frustrated trying to setup any router with this laptop.
I am also trying to run a wired G3 beige (OS 9.1) ethernet connection.
I have tried both a Airport Extreme and a Netgear WGR614. Both of these routers have worked in the past, but not now!
Once in a while I can achieve connectivity through the router, but nothing consistent.
The internet connection works just fine when the router is removed from the network.
I am well aware that the problem maybe some very simple setting or sequence of operations in configuring the network - but I am very much out of ideas, inspiration, and patience.
    1.Does anybody have any ideas?
2.Does anybody know of a complete idiots' guide to setting up these routers? (Netgear is NO help)
3.Is there anything inherently wrong about trying to run a wired G3 with OS 9 and a wireless G4 with OS 10.4 from the same router?

I would take a close look at possible radio interference, from nearby routers, cordless telephones, microwave ovens, and so on. If 2 routers worked before and now do not, this says something. Have a friend with a wireless laptop try your signal.
Generally, routers can be default configured and work, although they'll be totally unsecure, which is dangerous. There should be no issues with having an OS9 and OSX computers using the router. Sorry, router settings take a while to learn and are a little different for each brand. Intermittent operation isn't typical of any setting that I know of, WITH THE EXCEPTION that selecting other radio channels sometimes helps.
As the Rabbit mentions, your computer could have a flaw, so you have to test this by having another wireless user try your signal.
BTW, I have encountered a consistent problem through the last few OSs of my Airport reception working fine mostly, then suddenly dying with no indication (other than the net stops working). I have to turn Airport off, then on again to get it working again. This is so annoying, I generally use ethernet now.

  • Mesh with Ethernet Bridging

    Hi all,
I'm running a 2106 with version 6.0.196.0.  I'm running a couple indoor 1131s on it for regular client access successfully, but my problem is with trying to Ethernet Bridge Wireless Mesh two 1522s.  I have placed the 1522 MAC addresses in the MAC Filter. I have Ethernet Bridging radio set on both the RAP and the MAP.  I have the RAP and MAP connecting(They see each other as AWAPP neighbors, I can ping the MAP from the wired LAN, and it registers to the WLC, but I can't seem to bridge through these APs.  I tried setting the Switchport attached to the RAP as an access port were the WLC and other APs sit as well as tried trunking it, making that same WLC vlan the native vlan.  I also tried creating a separate AP group for the 1522s...no joy.  Can anyone point me in the right direction on this?

Indoor WLAN and outdoor mesh is not supported on the same WLC at the same time.

  • WLC 2125 with 2x 1520 Mesh Points - Ethernet Bridging

Hi - I'm looking for assistance with a new Mesh set up we are deploying, the solutions consists of:
    1x Wireless LAN Controller 2125
    2x 1520 AP/Mesh Points
What we are trying to achieve is to bridge two networks together, I have followed the Cisco configuration guide and I simply can't get the traffic to cross from one side to the other. The WLC can see both 1520's on either side of the mesh network and I appear to have set it up right.
Here is how everything is set up:
    - Local network (Class B, 10.0.0.0/16) connected to Port 1 on the WLC.
    - 1520 is connected to Port 2 on the WLC via g0/0 with an IP address of 10.0.3.110 (management network, 10.0.3.111 for the wlan-management network) - this is set up as the RootAP, with ethernet bridging enabled and the bridging group set to rsqmesh.
    - 2nd 1520 is around 800ft away set up as a MeshAP with ethernet bridging enabled and the bridging group set to rsqmesh. Small 5-port switch (non-cisco) connect to g0/0 on this 1520 with a device attached which has the IP of 10.0.3.37.
    All help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Craig.

Bridging will not work if the RAP is directly connected to the controller. But CSCsk15792 is filed on this issue. If you put a switch between the controller and RAP traffic should start flowing.

  • HT3728 every time my iMac sleeps or restarts it loses the connection to airport express and i must reset and connect with router via ethernet cable.

Every time my imac sleeps or restarts it loses the wireless connection with my airport express (used for streaming music). I then have to disconnect the airport express from my stereo, bring it to my router, connect it to my router with ethernet cable and reset the wireless connection. Even with my airport express  in the same room as my router Airport Utility cannot find it until i plug in an ethernet cable, so i do not think this is an issue with my wireless network. Router is a newer netgear.

  • Outdoor Mesh AP Ethernet Bridging Problem

    Hi All,
    I've setup 6 X 1522 MESH APs.
    Setup:
There is 1 RAP and the rest are MAPs. All APs have already successfully registered with the WLC (4402-50), with the RAP being the hub and all other MAPs a single hop away. APs are all in VLAN 10 (same vlan as the AP manager) and the WLC management interface is in VLAN 9. Bth VLANs are routable to each other. All APs are configured with Ethernet Bridging checked and all are configured with the same bridge group name. The switchports (Fa0/8) for each switch connected to each AP is configured to be trunk mode with native Vlan of 10. All switches are also configure with other VLANs such as VL20 - 30 besides the mentioned VL9 & 10.
Problem:We tried to bridge VLAN 20 across the wireless bridge by plugging a notebook(A) to a switchport (Fa0/1: sw mode access & sw ac vl 20) belonging to a switch connected to MAP1; and another notebook(B) also plugged in to a VL 20 access port whose switch is connected to the RAP. From notebook A, we were able to ping all relevant IP addresses (notebook B, WLC management IP, VL 20, VL30 ip addresses of equipment somewhere else in the network behind the RAP). This means the wireless bridge is already working as VL20 is already bridge across th MAP and RAP. However, when we tried to do anything else, such as ftp, IPERF, some other TCP dependent application, it doesn;t work. we setup a FTP server on notebook B and used notebook A to retrieve a file. ftp client in notebook A was able to perform login, list directory. But when a file is being pulled, it stopped after it downloaded exactly 1024byte of information. FTP will timeout after a while with only 1024byte transferred. However, using tftp, we were able to complete transferring the entire file. It seems that the wireless bridge or the switches which the hosts were connected to allows tftp (UDP) to go through but restricted big packets/blocks of TCP information to go through (since only file transfer or any other application involving larger data exchange fails, but logging in and telneting applications still works).
Very puzzled as we had previously configured wireless bridging before on the same model of APs and it was working.
Can any experts here offer any advise to our problem?
BTW, the WLC is on the latest version of the MESH firmware as of today. All APs gets their IP address dynamically from a router in VLAN 10 configured with the correct DHCP pool and option 43 parameters. DHCP should be working well as our APs are all registered with the correct range of IP addresses and all APs are pingable from anywhere in the network. LinkSNR between the RAP and the MAPs are very good ranging from 30-38 hence it should not be an issue of poor signal or interference or noise.
    Thank you
    Alvin

I've personally not configured the MESH gear to form a bridge, so I can't provide any "real world" expertise. Here is short document on how to set it up, so maybe something within it will catch your eye:

  • How to Set Default Open With?

Bridge keeps opening my .png screen shot files with Fireworks, I want them to open in Photoshop — CS4.
The .png file icons defaults are set to open with Ps.
Bridge> Preferences> File Type Associations don't even list .png (if that is the place to do it).
Forum search seems to be hitting on everything but what I am typing in.
Bridge Help doesn't understand what I am asking.

Same issue - when I double click a "RW2" file in Bridge my Photomatix application opens the file. Nowhere in the file associations do I see Photomatix or the "RW2" file format for that matter. I reset to default association - still no joy. The only app showing in the "Open With" pull down in Bridge is "Photomatix (default)". How so I change this default to PS4?

  • Setting up Time Capsule as router with DSL Modem as bridge

    Hi All,
I want to work this out in my head before I start disconnecting wires. So let me run down what the situation and plan is. If you see a potential issue, I would appreciate the feedback.
    What I have:
Verizon DSL. The DSL modem is also doing duty as the router. For a lot of reasons I don't need to get into here, I no longer want the DSL modem to be the router. I have gotten instructions on how to setup the DSL modem to serve ONLY as a bridge. In that configuration, you simply connect the DSL modem to the phone line as usual, then connect your router to one of the ethernet ports. My time capsule has been serving only as a wireless access and backup drive until now. So here is what I plan to do:
    1) Connect via ethernet cable, the WAN port on the TC to the ethernet port on the DSL modem.
    2) Using the manual setup screen on the TC, select the "Internet" tab.
    3) Set "Connect Using" to "Ethernet"
    4) Set "Connection Sharing" to "Share a public address"
    5) TCP/IP set to "Using DHCP"
At this point, everything should work. At least I think it should. Am I missing something?
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    R

I haven't worked with the Verizon gateways, but configuring the device as a simple bridge might require that the Time Capsule be setup to furnish the PPPoE service. You won't know until you try.
If you are not able to "Connect Using - Ethernet", then that would be an indication that you would need to instead "Connect Using - PPPoE". In this case, you'll need to enter your user name and password that you have established with the service provider in the Time Capsule setup configuration. Be sure to leave the Service Name area completely blank if you setup using PPPoE.
If you are able to "Connect Using - Ethernet" and you configure the Time Capsule to "Share a public IP address", you may see a warning during setup that this is producing what is known as a Double NAT on your network. This is normally not too serious, unless you are trying to setup online gaming, which requires a different type of NAT setting.

How can I set up a guest access point with a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme? I am using a Telus router with the Time Capsule used as a wireless access point (bridge mode). I don't want the guest access point to have access to my network.

The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

  • Can't use my TC as bridge with ethernet

    Hi all --
Here's my set-up : I use my ISP box as wifi router. I added my Time Capsule wirelessly to the existing network.
Wireless network works fine : I can access Internet and the TC drive.
Here's the problem : I'd like to connect a PC via ethernet to the TC in order to access the web (the PC doesn't have wifi). I get no connexion...
I tried to connect my Macbook to the TC with ethernet and got the same result.
Here are some bits of info : the TC gets its ip address (192.168.1.21) via dhcp from my adsl box, BUT both the PC and the mac get a different IP address (i.e. 194.169.x.x) when connected to the TC via ethernet. Could it be that the TC is assigning ip addresses even though it's designated to act as a bridge ?
I am at loss. Thanks for any help.

on the summary screen, I have "wireless mode : join a wireless network" (may not be the exact wording since I'm on a foreign system), and the IP Adress is 192.168.1.21.
Again, the TC is NOT connected to the ISP box via ethernet but Wifi.
On the Internet tab, I have :
    - connect via : wireless network
    - configure IPv4 : via DHCP
    - IP Address : 192.168.1.21
    - subnet : 255.255.255.0
    - router : 192.168.1.1
    - DNS server : 192.168.1.1
    - Connexion sharing : off - bridge mode.
    Hope it helps...

  • Issue with cisco ONS 15310. Slot with Ethernet ports, designed for bridging.

Hi, guys. I’ve got an issue with cisco ONS 15310 sdh optical network. I’ve got a special slot with Ethernet ports, designed for bridging. Assume, we’ve got to multiplexers, named A and B with ports A0 and B0 respectively. The ios console of these slots says, the configuration is as follows:
no ip address set on these ports
    Ports are administratively up
    Auto mdix
Bridge groups are the same on these ports.
    Dot1q tunnel.
I’m trying to monitor a device with an ip-address connected to port B0. It answers ping if I connect the notebook directly to a device. But if I connect the notebook to port A0 and ping the device pluged in port B0 through the optical network, it doesn’t answer. I tried connections with straight and cross cable.
Guys, who set the network said, it should work as a point to point bridge with no extra configuration. But it doesn’t. I used wireshark sniffer to lookup what’s happening on port A0. All I see is cdp-s from port A0 and self-announcements of the notebook.
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.
